Observation of 901/902 behavior - Motorola Droid Bionic

So, I've noticed ever since 901 and now on 902 that if the 4G signal is weak when the phone boots, it will hang onto 3G and never grab 4G. This morning I had a bit of a freak out because my baseband was only showing CDMA. I haven't flashed anything in weeks, so I found this odd. I tried several things, but got nothing. Finally, I did a flash of the 902 fxz and finally saw the LTE baseband. I immediately ran motofail, but after the reboot my baseband again only showed CDMA. I went outside where the 4G signal is stronger and rebooted, and finally got 4G and the LTE baseband showing.
Based on this, it seems to me that on this system version, if 4G is unavailable the phone won't load the LTE baseband drivers (possibly to conserve battery?).
Has anyone else noticed this, or is my phone messed up?

I recently updated to .902 and Eclipse 2.2 from .893 and one of the old Th3ory roms. Are you on a ROM or stock? And your 4G signal used to be fine? The only thing I would recommend is completely wipe everything, get as stock as possible, then try again......

Stock, except root. The thing is my phone is fine, as long as it gets a 4g signal on boot. If it does it works fine and switches back and forth between 3g and 4g with no issues. Its only when it can't lock on to 4g on a reboot. It then seems to stay on 3g and not even load 4g. Still, to be safe I fxz'd. We'll see if that helps.

Good luck. And I really recommend trying a ROM, no reason not too. Get rom manager and make a backup, and titanium backup and you will never miss a beat.

I've played around with the ICS ROMs using safestrap, but I really want to wait for the official ICS update before I go too ROM crazy. If the bootloader wasn't locked and I could easily flash a new update whenever I wouldn't care, but...

If you find out were all the roms are let me know so far I don't think there is about 4 or 5 roms to play with

There are 5 ICS ROMs on driodhive.

Help please

I need some help. I have a verizon galaxy tab thats rooted and i upgraded to the sprint gb rooted update. Only reason i was using it was for the netflix. Now netflix is working on 2.2 for us so i used heimdall to stock. Success. But now my tab says i have 3g but when i go to the market or web it goes away. I looked in settings and under network it says unknown. Isnt it suppose to verizon there?? Can anyone tell me how to get data back working??
i would try flashing all the way back to the dj11 firmware. then, see if you can get the OTA update to ec02. that might fix it. otherwise, i'm guessing you need to wipe wipe wipe, and reflash stock, then wipe a few more times. sometimes you get artifacts from past installs. especially if you still have a CWM recovery, and other install packages on your sd card.
you could also try flashing to one of boushh's or oldmacnut's kernels, and then go from there to stock. see if that resets the radio/modem issue.
I called them(verizon) and they said somehow they computer wouldn't activate my data connection so that's why it was doing that and he fixed it for me....weird lol

Zv4 to zv7 update discussion

I thought I might open this up since I didn't see it anywhere. Anyway, ill start with my side.
I was on revolt 1.5 (big thanks mtm) and had a haphazard way of getting to zv7. Anyway, I restored stock without wiping, both system and boot.img from thecubeds original factory band, started up fine. Then used revotoolkit to restore stock recovery, downloaded the update and updated sucessfully. I then rooted with the esteem method, free and clear, and restored, among other things, my apps with data that I backed up in ti. Everything was generally fine, with minor hiccups from restoring app data so just manually wiped data from problem apps one by one. After that, gingervolt had come out and I figured that if I flash it over my current setup, worse case scenario I go back and wipe data and install from scratch. But, as luck had it, after taking awhile to rebuild the dalvik cache, everything was fine and dandy.
So how did yours go? Any stories or experiences? Thought this would be good for general discussion and as insight for everyone.

yes tell all as I have heard going right from v4 to v7 was a no go.
You beat me to the punch...I was on Revolt 1.5 and loving it but I want GB. So I downgraded to the stock rooted nandroid backup found here. I went to settings> about phone> software update and...nothing. I tried a few times, I waited for awhile and nothing. I then flashed the z4 tot file, nothing, I updated the z6 file and rooted that and nothing (see a pattern?) I am currently running the Z6 rooted file.
Any help would be appriciated. By the way mtmichaelson you are the man.
I think we are all in the same boat Verizon hasn't uploaded the update to the servers we can download from for now I'm staying stock rooted with stock recovery until they push the update to me so that i can install it when it gets here basically the only thing we can do is wait

My impressions
I was patient and stuck with a CWM/rooted stock V4 ROM.
I uses MT's ROM stock and followed instructions and upgraded through OTA to GB without a hitch. I also erased the internal SD to remove any gremlins from past experimentation.
I used his root zip and it when without a hitch except for the CWM recovery not sticking after reboot.
I notice that the audio output is louder, not one single crash or forced close, faster 4G and GPS, and faster charging. I plan to wait to see how the custom ROMs perform before flashing it and hopefully the CWM issue will be resolved soon.
We all need to thank everyone who has made this possible!
Just curious, what part of the country are you guys in that can't get the update?
I can't get the update and I'm in central California.

As far as secrets, I cant think of many hidden things I did. A little more detailed though, I had revolt 1.5, backed up everything, and didnt wipe any data.
I went to cwr, made a nand backup, and without wiping anything went straight to flash thecubed's root nandroid rip with advanced restore, with the stock system.img and boot.img, and that booted fine.
Then in android, I used revotoolkit to flash the stock recovery, and I think its this step that at least partially 'allows' the update. I guess something where it checks what is installed to check if there's an update.
Then I got the update prompt for zv6, and it updated fine, although it wasnt rooted afterward. Shortly after, I got another update and it updated to zv7 and 2.3.4, still unrooted. Although my apps were still there, some had issues from remnants of data from froyo, like force closes. So I manually, selectively deleted data in 'manage apps' as I found problem apps.
Then I used the esteem root to root it, and after finding the working, updated one it went fine.
After that, gingervolt came out, and although it was warned to wipe data strenuously before switching, I figured that if I at least made a nandroid before flashing anything, then the worst case scenario if flashing gingervolt over stock gb turned out to fail, I could either wipe data anyway and reflash like normal, or by some crazy chance it'd work, and I just got lucky when it worked. It just took a good 5-7 minutes to boot I presume because it has to rebuild the dalvik cache (based on what/how many apps you have?) and here we are. I hope this explains more so others may have success stories.

It may have to do, like I put above, with putting stock recovery + boot + system.img from stock zv4. Try that if you can and report the results if it deems beneficial.

And I completely have to agree haha. After updating and rooting, I got instant gps lock, have yet to have any fc's or reboot besides the usual routines, and I know Ill have to post a ss to prove it but I was able to get consistent 20-30mbps down with a single 42mbps down speedtest on the speedtest.net app, when before even on a great day it would peak at 16mbps. Loving gingerbread, especially since (coming from a droid) its on a phone meant to handle gb. Afaik, gb's mem manager was more built for 512mb+ (correct me if Im wrong), although it manages everything so much better. As good as gb is on my OG droid, there are a good # of screen redraws lol.
I started from Revolt 1.5. I made a NAND banckup, then got rid of CWM with RevoToolKit. Flashed the v6 tot file with LGNPST, updated to GB OTA, then rooted with mt's script. All-in-all it was pretty painless. I didn't do a data/cache wipe until I went to put on Gingervolt.

Odd. On Halloween, in Cerritos, I reverted to stock and got immediate zv6 upgrade download without even going to settings. zv7 came automatically too.
The only thing I can think of is my phone has never been on vz6 before. Are the people who are having trouble ones who downgraded from zv6 to 4 and then rooted?

It says that. Ignore it. It is .904 mine said the same.
and no. you have to be on stock .902 bloated, odexed, root is okay, but you will lose it. If not on stock .902 you have to FXZ back, then go in to stock recovery (holding both volume buttons and powering up, and pressing down once and up to open it) then one the fancy logo appears press both volume buttons, the apply update. Navigate to it and select it. Then once its done you'll be .904 stock, unrooted. So run the motofail root script. Then enjoy.

I have a question. I don't own a bionic, but my brother in law has one (great phone), I rooted it with motofail, installed safestrap. He is on.902 currently. once I had him ripped, I immediately switched to the safe side. It made a backup before it switched to safe. I put eclipse 2.2 on it. Now. I am waiting for 904 to go official. When I switch back to unsafe, will I be back on stock right away? or do I have to do a restore of that backup once I am back on unsafe side?
Now, once back to stock, rooted 902, can he get an ota? I would think he could. I know in my thunderbolt, if you are stock and rooted, you can get an ota. Sorry for all the questions, just want to be sure what to do. Moto is much different than htc is in this respect. Thanks, Daniel

Once the official release hits probably. First you would revert back to your "unsafe" system through the safestrap boot menu which should still be running stock 902 (or whatever version he has) Once that is loaded you reboot and it will boot your stock system.
Once your up and running in the stock system the phone will update its apps(Since the stock system has not been run since you rooted/rom'd I'm assuming). I recommend being on WiFi if possible unless he has unlimited data. After that completes you will need to Hit the button to the left of the home button (the 4 blocks with one colored in) > Settings > About Phone > System Updates.
It will look for the update and download it OTA if available. It will wipe out your root so you will need to motofail again after that and probably reinstall SafeStrap(I had to)

Forgot to mention. You may or may not have to reflash Eclipse to your safe system after the update. I personally didn't and the radios are reflecting the update but the system is still showing as 902 update since im running off of my original 902 eclipse flash.

Stuck waiting, just like ICS
It's pretty pathetic that they can't even get minor updates out the door. It doesn't bode well for us getting ICS before this phone outlives its usefulness. Sorry to be so cynical, but, VZW and updates has just been horrible. (And not just for the Bionic....right, anyone waiting for an official ICS build for a 4G Xoom? All 2 of you that haven't rooted it and gone to a ROM...) Uh, anyway, let's hope they get this update rolled out soon so we can resume the wait for ICS.

I don't want to seem like an A-hole. But before the phone out lives its usefulness? Almost any smart phone on the market will be useful for years. It's only the american greed wanting the newest baddest phones. How many people actually wait the full 2 years before upgrading? I know I don't. I guess you completely missed my point. What I don't want to see happen, and is very POSSIBLE, is that we get ICS after Jelly Bean is released. You're going to tell me that would make you happy? If I had waited a couple more months from when I bought the Bionic in the first place, i.e. having the patience you're telling me I need now, I could have simply bought a phone that CAME with ICS rather than having to wait months for it...

It wouldnt make me happy, nor would it upset me. I buy my phones according to the hardware and the specs that I think will fit me the best. The operating system is just an added bonus. Of course I want ICS, and then Jelly Beam, but I'm not going to complain about the speed I receive the update. Some are faster, some are slower. Just the way of life. Id rather wait.an extra 4 months for a build that isn't super glitchy, as to have it as soon as it's released and it not function properly. Just my opion

Vivid bricked by rom toolbox :(

I've used rom toolbox forever now for changing system fonts. Well today I decide to change again. RT was recently updated, and after rebooting to apply the font, my vivid now gets stuck at the at&t animation. Won't go past. I've done several reboots and battery pulls to no avail. I'm game to try it, I just have no idea how to pick one or install it. Senseless sounds good to me, and one with a better camera would be great. Edit: wiping both cashe did nothing. Still sitting at "rethink possible."

Your just soft bricked. I've done it myself, go messing with something and bam the phone won't boot. It easily fixable by flashing a rom. Actually wiping data might be an even easier fix. I deleted some bloat and caused a boot loop, clearing the cache didn't work either but when I wiped again all is good.

OK I can get a signal but it's VERY weak, not strong enough for anything really. But this area is notorious for having a crap signal.

Once your carrier unlocked, its permanent.
Use Motochopper to root...no one here feels like dealing with the Samba Sh!t again...
Then use this to unlock the bootloader
There are a few ways to install recovery -- See my HOW TO for the manual way, there's the one-click method, and using Rom Toolbox and installing the Photon Q CWM. All are easy and can be found in the first pages of our forums. The 2nd two are easier, but its really worth it to learn the manual way.

Maybe. Are you on a custom rom, not using ATT 4.1.1? Need more info. List rom\fastboot and any mods you might be using.
Try connecting to WiFi and see if your apps can connect. After that, try wiping cache, dalvik cache and see if that helps. If after trying both of those and you still have no connection, its likely be a bad rom install.
You didn't flash MR or Bell 4.1.2 over AT&T 4.1.1 and not factory reset did you? Or restore AT&T Settings.apk app data with Titanium Backup from on a diferent rom? Doing both of those could cause errors like you're having.

Sorry for the late reply, but no this is stock AT&T and all the bloatware is installed. I figured it out. I had to change the APN to fast.T-Mobile.com and my internet is working now. As for putting in roms. I heard 4.2.2 will remove LTE is this true?
EDIT:My friend is giving me **** because I paid 250 for this unlocked ATRIX HD. For an extra 60 dollars more I could have bought the Nexus 4 and more development support he says plus its a Quad Core. At the time I had no idea about the dev support for this device and he was right. There are barely any support for this device. I love the PA roms and PacMan roms to be ported over to this device. But no roms from them at all. My battery life sucks because of all the bloatware, but so far I am liking this phone a lot. I'm going to be patient and wait.
