CM 7.2 release candidate - Nook Color General

http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/cyanogenmod-7-2-0-rc1-is-upon-us
It’s been a long time in the making, but it’s finally here: CyanogenMod 7.2, the latest version based on Android 2.3(.7), has reached the release candidate stage!
We’ve been delaying it for too long, mostly because new devices kept being submitted to us, and now we feel that at 69 70 devices, CM7.2 is more than ready for everybody to enjoy
7.2 adds a couple of backported features and fixes from Android 4 (ICS), over 20 new devices when compared to 7.1, and even some new features to boot (be sure to check out the new predictive contact search in the phone dialer!). We’ve also fixed some bugs along the way. Some of them device-specific, others that affected everybody, and one in particular that’s been plaguing Android for a long time: the mysteriously vanishing SD-card ringtones are no more! You can check the full list of noteworthy changes at the CHANGELOG.
As usual, you can submit bug reports on these builds: if you find anything broken in your device while running CM7.2-RC1, (as downloaded from our mirrors or ROM Manager! Please do not submit reports if your build came from elsewhere), be sure to submit a report through http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/ , so that we can fix it in time for the final 7.2 release.

What are the significant differences between this official CM7.2 and the unofficial CM7.2 KANG that we have been using in the last couples of months?

Excuse a noob, but is this file good for SD as well as emmc installs?
thanks

Assuming you have already got a flavor of cm7 installed on an SD card you can copy the update file to the boot partition (I did it from my PC with a card reader), then insert the card in your NC and either access your boot menu and select Reboot Recovery or boot normally and then Reboot with the Recovery option. The files unpack and the penguin is displayed. The unit shuts off and you have to restart (seems to take forever with the android boot animation but wait it out) and all should be well.

KANG 03042012, the latest, *has* CM7.2RC1 so the differences are detailed in that thread but boil down to mr666's enhancements.
For instance, I get the impression from your sig that you run Dalingrin's as a separate update. Dalingrin's has been a part of M-K,(one of the above mentioned enhancements), for a while now.

Glad you said it, so I didn't have to show my ignorance

I was happy to see that 7.2 fixed the magazine stacking in the Nook App. I have the official and the M-K running on different NCs and they're running great!

I tried to update but I can't even get to the boot animation. It shows CM is loading, flash of light, then goes black. Time for a fresh install I guess.

Took awhile even to get to the animation, you may have given up too soon.
I like the update, have noticed improved battery life, nice colors and screen transitions. I have twice had a glitch where it wouldn't wake up after sleeping (twice in the last few days). Hope that doesn't persist.

Actually it didn't. It's that Nook for Android released a brand new version that fixed the magazine issue. A week prior the older version still stacked all the magazines on top of each other on my 7.2 build.
How do you know if you have the latest version of the Nook app? Download some comic books, it's the first version that supports Nook Comics.

Hmm. But is the newer version not stacking on 7.1 either? I'm curious, but not enough to flash back to test, I don't think. I just had a friend switch to 7.2. A few days ago specifically because of the stacking, so that would be a good coincidental timing. Anyone still on 7.1 that can check?

I had rotated out of 7.1 awhile back and I use B&N app everyday. When they provided the new update for the app, that is when my magazines stacked correctly. The update was actually made for the tablet and the version of the new update is: 3.1.0.19.ANDTBL (and tablet). I updated when it came out and it fixed it immediately. I would think it would still work correctly on 7.1, but like you, do not want to mess with a good think.

Okay, curiosity was bugging me. I tested, and yep, no stacking on 7.1 either, guess it was a B&N fix. 7.2 is good in any case.

I did a new install to SD card with the CM7.2RC Most things work as should. Biggest issue is that after some point, the unit will not accept a charge. I plug the cable in (NC Cable/charger) and the light on the cable goes straight to green. Leaving it plugged in for awhile doesn't change the amount of charge (actually is discharging per normal use). After a power off and re-boot, all works as normal. Not sure what the trigger is that causes the Nook Color to not take a charge, but it is not locked up, all programs work normally. It will take a charge and discharge-lets say over a few days, then at some point will not allow a charge. Battery % meter seems to be accurate; tracking appropriately.
I also have a Nightly (#75 I think) SD card that I use, as well as stock Rooted 1.1 on EMMC, and neither have this issue, device is fine electronically.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Mark

Are you sure it's not the cable? They have a bad habit of going south on us.

CM7.0.3 to CM7.2 non rooted on SD card
Hello,
I'm a noob here and found that I should ask questions here on the general forum and not the developers forum.
I have very recently created a sd card non rooted using CM7.0.3 encore and have kernel version 2.6.29-omap1 and its Android version 2.3.3.
I want to keep the ability to return to B&N mode from internal memory to keep my warranty from B&N in check.
I have had issues with using the Google Market app and don't see a lot of apps that I would normally see on my Droid Bionic...like Facebook and others. I have hacked around that issue by finding apps and manually installing them as a work around which is fine for now.
A couple of questions?
By going to a nightly version...can I still remain non-rooted and keep emmc stock and intact with B&N Color flash and boot from my sd card?
will this fix my Google Market issues and have more applications that I can see?
Will I be able to just drag the new CM7.2 ??version code to my /boot directory on my sd card and go into recovery mode to boot it in?
Does this new CM7.2 ??? get put in a particular partition or just under the /boot directory?
Will this wipe out my apps or any data on my sd card?
Will this CM7.2 ??? version support USB host mode for a USB webcam for Skype?
Apparently, this opens another can of worms in that I need to provide USB power from an external hub and I need some kind of Nook Tweaks app to adjust settings?
Can someone explain this?
I have searched these forums and I must say spent a lot of time and nothing seems to be in one place or current on pre-requisites.
Should I get a second sd card to practice on so I don't wipe out my bootable CM7.0.3 version
Any help here would be GREAT!
Thanks in advance!
BB

I'm in a similarsituation as BeaconBob. The following applies to me as well.

I set up my 8GB card months ago and have forgotten all the details of flashing a ROM. Thanks for any suggestons/help.

Make sure your screen density is set to 180. Clear market cache and data, reboot, and try again.

If you don't want to spring for a new Sandisk class 4 card -- I have five now ) -- just use your Win32Disk Imager to write an image file of your current setup to your computer and go blithely on experimenting like crazy. You will always have an image file to write back to your freshly formatted sd card to take a giant leap backward. But I'd bet you'll never even use it. It's too much fun going forward.
And it never hurts to have a zipped backup of the Titanium BU files available to upload and restore at various stages.
Currently running a racks triple boot, the latest Kang cm7, a dualboot miui/stock, and somewhere I could swear I had an old 253m from back in january. Just so my NC flap doesn't break, I'm good...

Holy shiznit! Looks like I'm going to have to upgrade from Froyo sooner than expected. I was wondering why dalingrin's kernel thread was so quiet this weekend. Sounds like he and the rest of the Encore team were hard at work.

OUCH!!! The sleep thing and huge battery drain prevented me from shifting from old-but-sturdy 2.1 stock, which I charged last time...let me think...31 March.
If I had CM7 I would have charged it already 5 times.
Cm7 power problems / sleep death
This may be a dumb question but if Nookie Froyo doesn't have either of the power or sleep problems that CM7 does, would it be possible to track down and fix these bugs by comparing their source codes?
so many awesomes. but im guessing flash still dosnt work?

I believe they've found the problem and have fixed it in the kernel, but since it was so close to the release date, they've decided to release CM7 first with the existing kernel first, and then bug test the new one with the fix.
So we can look forward to having it fixed in the next few nightlies, hopefully.

Flash has been working flawlessly since mid-March in CM7. The only major issues to be worked on still with CM7 are improved Bluetooth range, eliminating the Sleep of Death (although it uses only ~1%/hour for me now while in sleep), and as with every device continued performance tweaks. There are plenty of smaller things to be fixed as well including screen shot support (which was fixed by Fattire and just needs verified/added to source), integrated button remapping (in works by Mad-Murdock), and anything else people can think to work on.

Just got it installed..
So far so good. I took the plunge last night to get it installed. Well, first try after formatting system, data, and cache went ok. Then rebooted and it got stuck on "Android" text at the bottom. Simply restarted holding the "power + n", then it successfully booted into CWR. Flashed and viola. Looks good. Love the included Cyanogen wallpapers. =)
So far, no issues, but then again, I haven't played with it much. My Bluetooth option is listed and when I try to turn it on, it tries for a bit, then does nothing. Any ideas?
Oh yeah... I used the OC kernel and it seems to be fine. =P

BLuetooth is a known issue. You need to either hard reboot, which is holding the physical power till it shuts off, or choose "Fix permissions" in Rom Manager then reboot, or a combination of both.

Also a seperate question. The link i have for the CWR image for my sd card is bad. Not for a bootable sd. I want to nstall cm7 from scratch on the EMMC but i first need to image a CWR sd card then put cm7 stable on it. Do you have that image link?
Thanks!!!
hey guys i have somewhat of a dumb question. I have my nok running hneycomb using that dual booth method. If i wanred to flash cm7 on it, should i completely undo the dual boot? Or go ahead and boot into recovery and try installing it?
You have to first undo the dual boot, because the dual boot created a second partition (hd) on your nook color. If you don't undo the dual boot, you'll just lose that space as cm7 will overwrite the file that allows you to boot into honeycomb.
none of the widgets I downloaded are showing up on the widget list with this rom

Where is our v1.4?

Hey guys with the release of the Nook Tablet and the price reduction of our brethren color, where is our 1.4 rom update? I assume the NT is already running it as well as any new NC. Should we be concerned the 1.4 update may lock up our bootloaders like the NT is?
Its not out for the NC yet. Reports said December.
Your signature indicated you're running CM7.1, why care about the 1.4, which is probably Gingerbread 2.3.5?
I am but I've considered dual-booting stock firmware alongside, especially with the newly added features of 1.4 . Aside from that I just like to play with roms, I didnt have 1.3 on my device for more than 72hours before I stuck cm7.1 on it.
Don't jump on v1.4 too fast...
It could have locked down the device to where dual boot & CM7 are not usable...

If you still have the stock ROM installed I would assume you could still do a factory reset and then avoid any OTA updates.

That isn't likely. The board attempts to boot the first partition of sd or emmc (if its vfat). It loads MLO then u-boot.bin. They "could" lock down either with an update, but you could simply boot sdcard and replace the ones in /boot with non-locked versions. You don't have much to worry about with this device.

The Tablet does check the SD card first, however it's checking for a signed boot image there just like on the internal memory. The only signed image you could possibly run at this time is one copied from the internal memory, but the mount points in that image point right back to the partitions on the internal memory so it wouldn't look like you've done anything differently.
From what I gather, SD boot is in important part of B&N's service setup for these devices as it allows an in-store employee without tons of Android tech support training to stick in a special SD card and boot straight into reformatting tools, etc no matter how badly someone messed up their software.
Can you even flash a bootloader on these devices? My only experience with devices where you could flash something lower level than recovery is my HTC phone and it's hboot but that device is setup very differently than these tablets

touchpad wifi fix issue

ran into an issue flashing fix located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23286933&postcount=61 that made my cm 7 go into a loop of rebooting. Help - is there a fix that I can apply?
The fix you're referring to dates back to March, things have come on a long way since then . Why don't you make a backup of your current rom and try the latest nightly you will probably be pleasantly surprised.
I'm surprised anyone is still using CM7. I second the suggestion of using the latest CM9 Nightly.

I'm not sure if there are certain steps you have to follow from going from CM7 to CM9 since when I got my TP, I went straight to CM9. But I think you can just download the latest ICS google apps file (gapps) and the latest nightly and then in clockwork recovery, do a data wipe/factory reset, wipe cahce and wipe dalvik cache. Then flash the nightly then the gapps. You should be fine.

I havent heard anything about the touch screen not working well. It works fine for me. And yes, you will lose your apps since you need to do a factory reset. But use Titanium backup to backup your apps. Then when you get on cm9, restore them. Just dont backup and restore system data. Apps and app data ONLY.
Ok after combing through this site there is alot I mean alot of updates after installing cm9. Is there a latest and greatest install walk through out any where? Also how or where do you get the nightly updates or is there an app that grabs them?
Thanks everyone, since I can't boot I might as well go to cm9.

stayed up and took a crack at it. followed instructions to a T except did the ACMEUninstaller first. Then rebooted and then did the ACMEInstaller. But I still get the loop, it goes into cyanogen Loading... then shutsdown and reboots to the menu. Am I supposed to delete anything after the ACMEUninstaller before I run the ACMEInstaller?
Was there a Base CM 9 that I am supposed to have installed before I install any of the nightly builds....?
Also if I run the Nightly do I have to perform any tasks first or just go and run zip file from SD?
Thanks
UPDATE - copied update- nightly from notes above and ran install from zip from SD and got it going. Nice, really like the new look. I still need to know how to safely backup apps and data for future nightly updates (step by step please) because I have a few days of work ahead of me to get this back to my configuration.
PS - Has anyone tried True Image or Ghost to create a backup image of the SD and if so does it work when it's restored?

No base, you can start directly from the latest nightly which is 0909
"Step by step please", if you need to make that statement you honestly need to do quite a bit more reading, and I say that in all kindness to keep you from having trouble with your device
There are a MULTITUDE of apps, both free and paid to back up all your apps and info
As far as backing up the contents of the internal SD, I tried everything out there and then came back to tried and true command line, look up a command line operation called robocopy... what you do is boot into recovery and mount the USB storage. Then there are several commands you can issue to copy files from your inner SD to your computer but the one I use is /mir, which replicates the contents EXACTLY, even hidden files, but like I said look up the wiki page on robocopy for more details
Have fun with the CM9 and get ready for CM10 hopefully not too far in the future, and do plenty of relaxed reading
One bug I am having. The nightly I was told was the update-cm-9-20120815-NIGHTLY-tenderloin.zip works fine but when I run the newest update-cm-9-20120909-NIGHTLY-tenderloin.zip it stops and states bad file. Then it wont boot into CM9. So i run the update-cm-9-20120815-NIGHTLY-tenderloin.zip once again from install from zip and it boots. I can extract the update-cm-9-20120909-NIGHTLY-tenderloin.zip and see all the files while its on the TP SD card. So is there a step I am missing when installing from zip to the latest and greatest Nightly?
Thanks

Nook HD Root for 2.0.5?

I just opened my Nook just now, I set it up thinking it was harmless. Unfortunately, just as I went to go root...I saw that there was a break or something? Does anything work on it now or do I need to play the waiting game again?
I don't know about the HD but there is a root for 2.0.5 that can be mod via CWM, and since this modified CWM is only working for HD+ you probably have to wait. Hopefully somebody will make a modified CWM for the the HD soon that's compatible. The current CWM for HD is meant for the CM10 which write changes to the sd card. So, yes you have to wait, unless you got the HD+ and not HD.

I'm more curious about just getting the google play store on it. That root?
Even for Nook HD, not HD+, your probably doesn't come with 2.0.5 out of the box. If you want GAPPS that much, and doesn't need to use Nook store yet, you can try to force yourself back to older firmware and then you can skip OOBE and then apply all-in-one mod. This should work for HD as well as HD+.
Damnit
Had Root working splendidly on 2.0.4 then Nook HD made a weird ring noise and said there was an update. I didn't want it and said no, but there it was after turning it off and back on again a few hours later after fiddling with GAPPS. I don't really want to factory reset, and have been searching for a way to reroot without bringing back to to previous version. So far it looks as though the directory just won't get made for some reason or another. On the plus side 2.0.5 does get rid of all those pesky multiple copies of every media file you have (but really on have one copy of)

Oops this was for hd, so I removed it. Mod may delete this one.

Right now it's only for HD+.
Just for kicks, can I ask why the HD+ has a working root and not the HD? Shouldn't it be the same thing since it's basically the same device and firmware?
I really hope the root for 2.0.5 on the HD is out soon. I'm not in any way a developer, so I am at the mercy of this fabulous forum. I just want the Play store and GAPPS. I'm not one of those who bought it just to put CM or something on it (as there seems to be many like that here). If I just wanted the Android experience, I would have bought a Nexus 7. However, I wanted a 7" e-reader that I thought I might add GAPPS to at some point. My iPad (or any 10" screen) is too big to read on enjoyably, IMHO. I can only hope that a lot of devs got this nice device for Christmas and will want to root it ASAP. Anyway, this post is now officially all over the place, so I'll stop the ranting. Merry Christmas to all!
I just joined this board to ask virtually the same thing and have the same opinion as you. I'm not a developer! And as a primarily iPhone/Apple user am pretty in the dark about rooting/sideloading/CM10 etc. I just bought a Nook assuming I'd either A. get Jellybean on it somehow B. be able to at least access the play store or even C. be content with the stock Nook experience. I think C would be the case if it had ANY games/apps. It's truly a worthless app marketplace.

The answer to both past users is the all-in-one root does work on the HD (for versions 2.0.4 and older). The reason my CWM root (which works on all versions) does not work yet on the HD is there is not a working stock CWM yet (it has different booting files). But there will be soon.

2.0.5 root for nook hd
Hey, guys noob here...Not too familiar with the Android platform...Im use to jailbreaking/unlocking Apple products....My question is, when I first powered up the HD, there was a critical update was that an update to a newer firmware for B&N? Is it possible to restore the HD back the firmware it came with ...All input with be greatly appreciated...Thanks
Leapinlar and bokbokan have released a root method that works for the HD on 2.0.5 now. It requires burning CWM to an sdcard and booting off the sdcard though. Check out leapinlar's thread.

At this point it's possible to restore the HD back a few different ways. The Nook comes with a backup of the out of the box ROM that can be restored via the Nook using what's called 8 boot loop. It's a failsafe that is tirggered when the device is rebooted 8 times during the boot phase. This can be done manually by powering off the device 8 times during boot, or modifying the ROM (/system) which triggers it.
Also as long as we have access to booting the device off the sdcard and access to the Nook's kernel I believe the device will be fairly open and accessible for us to do whatever we want to.

Actually, if you just follow some0ne's guide here, and install a decent launcher (I use Nova Launcher Prime.. gives you NINE desktops!), then you really will have no need for CM10 to have a fully-working rooted experience with the HD+. I'm hoping the HD owners get some love soon, too.. cause I'm aware that not everyone has the $320 to throw out for the 32 GB HD+.. (I personally couldn't settle for anything less than the FULL amount of internal storage, as the expansion slot will only take an additional 64 gb microSD.. or is that 48?_ I dunno.. too early in the morning to remember right now. ha.
For an IT pro such as myself, storage space is EVERYTHING when you're constantly downloading, installing, transferring files from one place to another... When I bought my HD+ 32GB, I also picked up a Sandisk 32GB Class 10 microSD to go along with it. (they were on sale for a mere $26!) I couldn't pass that deal up!)
Anyways, just do as some0ne says and you'll be livin' the "high... err I mean ROOTED LIFE" in no time." -- If you've got an HD+, that is.
Welllllll perhaps I spoke a bit too soon. Just went to run my titanium backup pro and it seems I'm no longer rooted due to B&N cramming the 2.0.5 update down my throat. wtf...

Yes, you need to reroot using my Universal Root zip and CWM. Look at my HD CWM thread linked in my signature.

Hey, so the root will work for nook HD then? if so, can you give me a tutorial on how to root it? I'm new to this and its way different than jailbreakimg an idevice! Thanks! I did look at the post u made with the zip files. and does rooting harm the nook in anyway?

It does not harm the nook. If you don't want it rooted anymore, just do the 8 failed boot procedure.
And if you look at my rooting thread I just walked someone through it last night.

These two threads would get you rooted HDs or HD+ with gapps and enough understanding to get started.

I think between them the instructions are clear, but understand this is still early in the process and it will be awhile before stuff is all plug and play. Feel free to ask questions, but don't criticize, people here are volunteering...
Technically speaking, Nook has Android 4.1.2 (JellyBean) on it, but B&N has limited some of the features. Rooting solves most of those problems, but requires some work arounds indicated in the threads.

Stock is not Jellybean. It is Ice Cream Sandwich (ics) version 4.0.4. But the rest is right.

A few questions regarding AHD

Hi All!
So I recently got a new AHD off ebay. Finally managed to get it free from AT&T's prison using the code (Unlockunit.com $18). Unlocked the bootloader.. rooted the thing and install Philz Touch and Official CM10.1 ROM. All is well.
Except a few annoyances.
1) Why does it install EVERYTHING on the phone's mem? There is also no option to move installed programs like I had on my old HTC Desire Z. How can I tell apps like Whatsapp to use the SD card and not the device mem???
2) Why is there an "Emulated" folder with all the contents of SD card copied over? Can I delete this?
3) For those who are using or have used official CM10.1: Did your screen go completely dark whenever you made a call??? It comes back on as soon as call has ended. I called my bank recently and could not access the dialer as the screen was off.
That's it for now.. will add more Q's later if I have some.. Overall I love AHD.. will replace the battery later on if I feel the need. Hopefully battery life will improve after I use the phone for a week or so..
TIA!

I might be wrong here...
1. With latest iteration of android os, there is no more move to sd support. Google doesn't like it, thats why nexus devices never had sd card slot.
2. Probably thats the way android handles it, by emulating the sd card.
3. I never experienced this. Did you have a screen protector blocking the proximity sensor?

1. Mm.. it worked on my Desire Z with Andromadus CM10.1 Nightly.
2. In the file manager I see 3 folders inside the Storage folder: 1) Emulated 2)SDCARD 3)USBDISK
3. No protectors at the moment. Thinking of getting one when I go out later.

1) Because that's where everything gets installed. Newer versions of Android don't necessarily have the option to move to SD card. Most phones after ICS don't have the option. I think only Samsung has been trying to keep it around, because it's not really supported anymore. I believe the limiting factor is how the memory is partitioned.
2) What you are looking at is a Symlink. It appears as though the Emulated folder has a copy of the SD card, but it is literally the same folder. One is just a virtual link to the other partition. Don't delete it, or you'll delete everything on your SD card.
3) Question; any reason you're still on CM10.1? CM11 (KitKat) is quite lovely, and I don't have any dialer issues. If I remember correctly, proximity sensor issues plagued this phone during development of CM10.1, and that may be your problem.

WRT 1 and 2.. I found a tool called DirectoryBind (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/themes-apps/tool-directorybind-data-to-externalsd-t1410262) and it works great.. now I can save game data on my SD card while Android thinks its still on the internal memory.
3) Which one would you recommend? I heard none of them are stable enough to be daily drivers... hows the one in your signature?

If you want the "safest" option, download CM11 Snapshot M10. If you want the absolute latest, download the latest nightly. Both are very stable.
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=moto_msm8960_jbbl
Daily driver? I only have one device, the Atrix HD. And it's a corporate phone provided by my company. I use it every day, and my job depends on it. So I'd say it's suitable as a daily driver :fingers-crossed:
If I had to pick ONE thing that's not perfect, it would be GPS. It works, but I do a lot of navigating while driving, it tends to tell me that it can't find GPS every 5-10 minutes. After a few seconds of thinking about it, it'll finally find itself and go back to normal. I figure it's a Kernel problem that will eventually go away whenever official KitKat is released by Motorola.
But don't let that scare you away. Otherwise, everything else is basically working perfectly.

I see your confusion. Many moons ago, all phones using the MSM8960 processor (Motorola Atrix HD, Razr HD, Photon Q, etc.) were all "unified" under the same ROM. Effectively, the MB886 device, as far as CyanogenMod is concerned, is discontinued.
The link I provided is for all MSM8960-based phones that are still on the JellyBean bootloader (-"jbbl"). That's you.
If/when this phone gets an official upgrade to KitKat from Motorola, our bootloader will get upgraded, and we can start flashing the non-"jbbl" version.
p.s. There's a specific thread for it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2523708
