Hi All,
I am considering the differences in getting the wi-fi Tab 8.9, versus the LTE tab 8.9. My understanding is wi-fi Tab has Tegra2 at 1ghz, and LTE Tab has a Snapdragon3 at 1.5ghz and a Sim card slot, but are otherwise identical. I would be using it only on wi-fi. My inclination is to get the LTE Tab, because it seems the processor may be slightly better.
Thoughts from those who own either one, would you have preferred getting the other?
Also, anyone have personal insight on comparing your 8.9 Tab, to the Sony S Tablet?
Thanks.
Well I have had just about every tab. If playing video is important get the LTE the processor can handle just about anything. Tegra struggles with some 720p. I have a 8.9 and 7.0 PLUS. The 7.0 has the exnoys processor and doesn't hesitate to play any video. However for gaming get the Tegra because most of the good games are optimized for it and they don't play on the enxyos

Having had both, I'd say they both have their faults and plusses. I actually use the 4G, so that is the reason I switched to the LTE. But I'd go for the LTE for the Snapdragon, as the Tegra 2 is rapidly showing its age.
Appreciate the responses, confirms what I was thinking.

Hi guys,
I plan on buying a Galaxy Tab and plan on using it wi-fi only, so it doesn't matter to me which version I purchase but I'd like to know which version of the tab is easier to hack and get the best use out of?
If I get the wi-fi only version that just got released, can I still use some of the custom roms out there?
Thanks
I won't use the 3G part of it but if I decide to go with a 3G version, should I go with the GSM version or a CDMA version? I know if I go with a GSM Version, I can flash a european FW and use it for phone calls, etc but I have no intention of doing that. All I want to be able to do is have a good working custom rom to get better battery life,etc...
Well the wifi version is new and has no custom roms yet. CDMA version is mostly carrier restricted so rom development is hard. Finally GSM version is easiest one to install custom rom on although i advice you to read alot before flashing custom roms.

Well, I am quite familiar with flashing ROMs, mainly for phones though. I read somewhere that T-Mobile has a lot of restrictions, is that true?
Mine is a GSM, Wi-Fi, Version the P1000.
I have had a GSM card in it to test it out, and since removed it.
Although i like to have the option of doing so.
For that reason alone, id suggest the GSM, wifi version.
Just my 2 cents.
I have the GSM 3G wifi Tab and is soooo happy!
I also have two friends who bought the wifi only version and later hoped they got the 3G one..
The WiFi version has BT 2.1 rather than BT 3.0 if you care much about that. Otherwise, the specs are almost the same as the AT&T version. I got the WiFi only, but found that there are at least three Samsung accessories that come up as "not guaranteed to work with your device". The HDMI dock, car charger, and car cradle are the main ones. I don't know if this is due to a lack of testing with the WiFi only, or if it is missing drivers/software/hardware that is needed to use those.
Regardless, I'm happy with mine until a version with a nicer screen comes out. I'm especially happy with the ability to dump just about any media file onto the MicroSD and it will play it.
.
WiFi Tab has a PowerVR SGX530 vs. GSM Tab's PowerVR SGX540
Wifi version also has different CPU.
With lower spec GPU, it can't play high-bit-rate 720p and 1080p which the 3G version can handle without problem.
thanks guys. I guess 3G version is a better choice.
I suggest a gsm [at&t/tmo] version. They have 16gb build in.

Hey everyone!
So I'm obviously in the market for a tablet, and the Galaxy Tab seems to be the best fit considering its price and functionality.
I have two main issues I need help with:
First, I know Skype recently announced that the Galaxy Tab supports video calling. This is VERY important - one of the reasons I'm getting a tablet is to easily skype my sister (really, my niece) and my long-distance boyfriend. Does video-calling work on both the WIFI and the 3G versions? Has anyone had any problems getting Skype to work?
Second, I'm trying to decide whether to purchase the WIFI-only version from Best Buy ($279 right now) or buying a used 3G version from CowBoom for the same basic price. I like the idea of having the option of getting a data-plan at some point, but don't want to be locked into a contract. Also, the idea of getting it used is a little scary (although I'd probably get CowBoom's 1 year protection plan). How much does the faster processor on the 3G version actually impact its functionality? Any other reason to get the 3G, even if I never end up getting a data plan?
Some more details about what I'm looking to do, since that is probably helpful ... I basically want to be able to surf the internet, answer emails, watch hulu plus at home, use the Kindle feature to read on the metro, and Skype video-call my loved ones. I start a job in early December where I will get some kind of smart phone(BB now, but they are thinking of switching to I-Phone), which is why I'm considering getting a WIFI-only version.
Thats all, I really appreciate any help!
I wouldn't be afraid to buy the 3G version, the gps works better with a 3g radio, and there are some alternative roms available with the 3g versions, but none I know of for the wifi only.
I also believe skype only works on gingerbread 2.3.4, which you won't be able to get with the wifi only tab.

Even though I have the Verizon Gtab, you might consider a gsm, because there are many more roms available for it than the cdma version.

I really want to buy a tablet but all the tabs I have checked into here in the US all have the Radio disabled so you cant use it as a cell phone. Really like the 7" or the 8.9" because the phone reason. And dual core would be nice. Can any one give me some info on what I should buy.?. The only one that I could really see working was the P1000... But not a dual core. Went from the HTC Inspire 4G rooted and Running Android Revolution HD and loved it but have had the Samsung Galaxy S II for the past 2 weeks and rooted it and by far can see a difference in the dual core. So if anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Oh yeah on AT&T

Not certain since I don't live in the States, but I'm pretty sure you're out of luck. I don't think any of Samsung's new Tab line is available with US phone service-compatible radios. As far as I'm aware, most of the lineup doesnt even include the hardware necessary for phone calls, so I don't think you'll be able to. You might want to watch for specs on the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (The P1000's spiritual successor) in case it comes with that functionality, but I don't think it will.
If you get an AT&T branded Samsung Galaxy 7 ( as many of us on here have).
There is a thread on here to guide you thru the steps to turn on the phone section.
I've done it. With the AT&T sim card from my Atrix. Inserted in this tab. Everything works!
Phone calls, txts messages web surf all simotainiously.
I love it.
Its not dual core though as you want, . But this thing is sweet. I bought my from craigslist.
Good luck.
Thanks I will check into that thread... since with cell phones once you root, it should work with any carrier that uses sim cards. Right? Is it the same with the tabs? I know some of the other carriers have dual core tabs, as long as they use sim cards will they work the same way? and with yours how does it run without the dual core? I read some reviews that there is slot of hesitation in the transitions.

I am thinking of switching from the Samsung Infuse 4g to the note. I have a couple of questions for current owner who don't mind indulging me.
1st... I am having a ton of trouble with my Infuse and the Microcell. Biggest issue is SMS and mms both fail to send about 65% of the time.
Does anyone use their Note with a Microcell and have you had any issues?
2nd... I understand there are several versions of the Note... an International Version and an ATT version.
What is the difference ?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Just my 2¢
So nobody is using their gnote with a Microcell? Really?

it's impossible as the currently released version isn't an AT&T phone and only AT&T phones connect to the MicroCell (I work for AT&T) now unless things changed and now any GSM phone can connect, but I doubt it

To answer your question, the AT&T version has LTE but a Snapdragon processor (faster data, less battery life, slower CPU/GPU for gaming/rendering), the International version does HSPA+ (still very fast data speeds, better battery life, 1.4 GHz Exynos, the fastest CPU/GPU out next to the Tegra 3 with noticeably better performance)

Thanks for the reply....that actually helps too. I will likely get the ATT version.
Pushing this back up now that the ATT version is out. Is anyone using their Note with a Miceocell? If so .. are you having any troubles with sending/receiving SMS or mms?
My Infuse is a joke when it come to texts thru my MicroCell.

Hi,
I am planning to buy a galaxy s3. Actually I do not need LTE but I tend to buy the LTE for the 2GB RAM.
Do you think there is a significant difference in performance between both versions?
Are there any good reasons to take the normal s3 instead of LTE version?
Well, on N5 you can keep more than 2 apps active, I believe this happens cos of 2GB ram, so 2GB of ram are necesseary now
I think there is no good reason to buy s3. Just go get the LTE version.
I don't know if you have used LTE (4g) before. If not I can tell you, 4g is way faster than 3g. So getting a 4g compatible device is a smart move. You may not want or need 4g now, but definitely 4g is the trend. For example in hong kong ,4g coverage is very well already.
Of cos the 2g ram makes a big difference in performance.
But if taking into account of nexus 5, I would suggest nexus 5.

Thanks for your reply. I don´t think the N5 is an option for me even though it was my first idea for my new phone. I don´t like the weak battery and the missing sd card slot.
Then I thought about the S4 but when I read about the self-destroying displays I dropped this idea.
Now I chose the S3 as I think it still is a great device and it provides everything that I need plus it is also much cheaper (<200€ instead of 400€ for the N5 32GB)
4G definitely....in the city i live got 90% 4G coverage...and you can notice the difference...
4G is the future...sooner or later it will come to you...and the extra GB of RAM is great
I think there are more rom options for s3, and the difference between 3g and 4g isn't that big, I would have bought s3 instead of the lte version
