[Q] New to me captivate, can update firmware without data cable? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off THANKS!
With that being said i have an att galaxy captivate, i am trying to upgade to the latest firmware. I am currently running 2.2 froyo.
I downloaded kies, kies mini, kies air
I followed all the steps to allow sharing with my windows 7 pc
kies air recognizes my device but does not promt an update.
kies mini seems to only work with a data cable which I do not have... I know.
What am I doing wrong? Or is firmware updating only via usb?
Thanks Again
humble noob

you NEED usb cable

DONE
I was able to update last night
A lil more help if u please after installing latest gingerbread 2.2.5 i thnk
camera ics is now inverted. any help would be great or recommendation of a better camera app.... Thanks

If you are on gingerbread you should not have ICS camera, You should have gingerbread camera

I should have been more clear. Prior to the firmware update I installed camera ics app from google play. It worked like a charm after update to 2.3.5 I897uckk4 kernel 2.6.35.7 gingerbread.uckk4.
The cam was inverted, i uninstalled and then dl again reinstall and still inverted.
The gingerbread cam is on the device now along with the cam ics app, I kinda like the interface of the ics version
Thanks Eh!
Ok fed ex just brought my Straight talk sim card. phone is operational. changed apn looks good so far
Configured phone to straight talk apn
speed test very poor fastest 1.44 mbps down .026 mbps up
slowest .41 up .09 down
sorry for high-jacking my own thread but are thier any changes I could make to settings to achieve better results.

modems control data speed and voice quality. read about modems in development section (sticky). then start testing... to each their own you will learn.
ics camera *may* not be compatible with gingerbread... try some other camera apps, if it is just that one app contact the developer of that app.... but if he has a thread or website, read any info first so you arent telling him something that he knows or has explained already.

[Q] bad gingerbread luck. kies stopped working

I have been holding out for Samsung official gingerbread release.
Now I kies got updated to a new version so it looks promising.
Just after the update i cannot start kies on my win7.
Just says kies stopped working.
Anyone have the same problem?
Are there any other good roms based on 2.3.3?
There's a deodexed version of the 2.3.3 jvb available to download from the dev forums and stock versions on SamFirmware you can flash with Odin or heimdall.
Who needs kies?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Complete removal of Kies may fix the problem . Reboot and install latest Kies from Samsung .
Kies only updates firmware when the server has the firmware for your phones product code .

Jva released on samfirmware.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Succesfully flashed JVB from samfirmwares!
Everything looks smooth. Except the quadrant score is lower than score in 2.2.1 version.
2.3.3 (JVB) = 927
2.2.1 = 1188
Almost looks like the file system lag is back!?
Do you have any good suggestions for rom if I want to replace touchwiz?
launcher seems easy to replace. but how to replace phone and contacts app?
Darkkys rom seems to be popular in this forum?
Does it come in a stable gingerbread version yet?

Quadrant Scores are nothing buddy!!! User experience on how snappy the phone is and how smooth the animations are flowin.....that's what counts!!!
Replace touchwiz with either GoLauncher or Zeam...these are the best as per me...

But that is not official firmware that came with the phone and not using official firmware invalidates warranty . So users choice and users ask for original firmware not stock rom .
Of course all us really clever users who understand Odin hacking Flashing and building all have a back up of the original rom to recover . Dont you .

[Q] T-Mobile Galaxy Tab - Few Questions

Hi guys, just this week I got a new Galaxy Tab from T-Mobile, so far so good, but I have a few questions about it.
1-) This is my first time using Android, is there a better version or ROM for this particular tab (or another that is fully compatible) which I should flash into it which is better or gives me more functionality than the default Android installation that T-Mobile puts on it?
2-) How are upgrades of Android OS obtained? I heard 3.0 is out, any ideas if Samsung or T-Mobile will make it available on these devices?
3-) Can "Line2" be used with it? I noticed when I'm connected to Wi-Fi at home Line2 works, but when I'm connected to 3G it wont work.
4-) Is it easy to install Themes on the Galaxy Tab, any tutorials?
5-) Any specific tricks/tweaks or apps, that are a must have for Galaxy Tab owners?
Thanks in advance!
-Eli
I also just got my SGT T-mobile. What is the model number of your tablet? What is the Baseband version of your tablet? Have you rooted yours?
Mine's model is SGH-T849, Baseband T849UVJJB, and yes, I downloaded a program from this board which supposedly roots it, after installing and running the commands it said it had successfully rooted my device, now how do I know if it is really rooted?
Also what's the Baseband? lol sorry but I'm lost, this is my first ever tablet and also first ever Android OS device.

We both have the same model and baseband. I'm not sure what baseband is. You can check to see if your tablet is rooted by going to Applications and look around to see if you can find a Superuser icon.
If it's rooted, I guess your next step is to find a custom ROM and flash it.
Do you remember what you used to root your tablet? Was it SuperOneClick?
Yes, it was the SuperOneClick one from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812367
Baseband is the modem you have. The modem controls the phone, wirelass data, wifi, and bluetooth. Yours is JJB.

Well, I'm not an expert but here is my experience:
1. You should flash the new Overcome experience Hermes:
http://overcome.mimzo.com/
There is also the unofficial cyanogenmod beta, but as you said the overcome is fully compatible and it will not change the feel of the Tab, just adds to the functionality.
2. The updates are two types:
# Official, these are over the air and you will find notifications in the notification area to tell you that there is a new update, or may be through kies for Samsung.
# Unofficial, which is basically flashing other ROMs whether official or custom.
# As for Android 3.0 (which is called honeycomb), it is not officially coming to the Tab. May be after the 3.2 announced a couple of days ago, but I still don't think so. Still, you might want to follow this thread as there are trials to get it fully working on the Tab:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122959
3. I don't have any idea about this, as I got mine used and then I rooted and flashed it the day I got it.
4. Of course there are themes for the Android. This Overcome I was telling you about has a Gold theme. There are a lot of ways to get themes on the Tab. I myself use different home launchers with different themes. You don't need to flash anything if you are just looking to change the looks of your device. Check this out and let me know if you like it:
Go Launcher EX https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex&feature=search_result
There are a lot other but this is my favorite. You can even change the fonts of the display.
5. The most common used tips and tweaks that you should use is over-clocking/ under-volting which gives you more speed and less battery drainage.
As for the apps, these are my favorites:
Tango, Photfunia, ezPDF reader, Movies (or IMDB), Springpad (or Catch), File Expert, Go Launcher, Go weather, Google Goggles, Google Shopper, Just reader, Splashtop, Plex, GrooveIP. I guess there are more on my device but these are the ones that I found more functional and fun to use.
Hope this helps...
Thanks rangercaptain,
Hey ahmadshawki, thanks so much, I will check out all of your suggestions, does overcome comes with Gingerbread?
Yes it does.

Any 2.2 rom is froyo (frozen yogurt).
Any 2.3 rom is gingerbread.
You can have either "flavor". They are both in the development section. Both are highly recommended.
Hi guys,
I've been visiting this forum for more than 6 months now, but I think this is my first post. I have a T-Mobile SGH-T849 GT-P1000.
Last year I unlocked it and changed it to a Gingerbread Euro. Below is the current setup:
Firmware version 2.3.3
Baseband version P1000XXJPZ
Kernel version 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Build number GINGERBREAD.XXJQ1
Tab has been working fine, with the exception of:
- often does not remember wi-fi hotspots automatically, need to switch off/on wi-fi to do this
- 3G & phone works erratically. I don't use it as a phone, but those times that I tried I noticed the phone would loose connectivity to the mobile network and needed a reboot in order to fix it.
I'd like to upgrade it to Ginger 2.3.6, but which rom should I use? I checked on the forum, but I'm not sure if I should use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380595&page=3
or any other.
Is my modem correct or should I use this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902323&page=4
to install JL5 modem?
Sorry for the noob questions.
I have a galaxy tab 7+ sgh-t869 I need to chance my build prop in order to play order and chaos online it doesn't support operating system I have no idea how to chance it or what to change it to please help thanks

[Q] Darky`s 9.4 to 10.2.1?

It's been awhile since I flashed any roms. Here is where I stand?
Samsung Galaxy S I9000
Firmware 2.2.1
Baseband version I9000XXJQ1
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
build number Darky's v9.4.XWJS8
I just did a factory reset as I had planned on dropping it off to get unlocked so I can switch carriers, however found out about the "Galaxy S Unlock" app.
Just downloaded the following apps:
Darky's Rom
Busy Box Installer
Rom Manager
Voodoo Control
Can I go directly from Darky's 9.4 to 10.2.1? Any other apps I may need for the transition. I did the original hacking 6 months ago and haven't retained anything.
Any tips, advice would be helpful
Thanks!!
i think you are asking for trouble flashing from 2.2 to 2.3 in the manner you are thinking.
I would odin flash 10.2 RE doing the full wipe.
Then you want 10.2.1 V2
you can flash that with darkyrom tools from the market
remember to use titanium backup to save all your apps
Thanks, that is exactly what I did after a little research again. Had to take a research break as my brain was getting frustrated with all the information but i got it working.
I do have another problem though. I have my I9000 and blackberry 9300. Both unlocked. For some reason my I9000 will not get reception in Northern Alberta where I work. I've used sim cards from telus/virgin mobile/koodo. Blackberry works fine (full bars), but I9000 doesnt get reception. It does however, work fine when i get back into town.
I'm assuming this is a modem issue? Any suggestions. I'm currently running Darky 10.2.1 V2.
i am looking into that issues also.
I think i have unlocked my phone but have only tried using a wind mobile SIM....
Hopefully i can figure this one out next time i see my cousin and i can try his SIM.
Me and my wife are both on Bell.
Oh and your Darky ROM is old
10.2.2 is the newest stable out.
But if you dont mind flashing the JVT RE edition is faster and works great

Got my Galaxy Note...but...

Hey Guys I got my galaxy note today! it's awesome!!!....but...I immediately tried to check for updates... but after agreeing with the terms and conditions, it says "Registration is failed. Try Again?".
How can I get around this and update my device OTA?
Here's my phone info:
Model: Galaxy Note GT-N7000
Android: 2.3.6
Baseband: N7000XXKK5
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXKKA
have you tried installing Kies on your PC, then connecting the Phone via cable so that Kies can update it?
4.0 isn't available through OTA atm so you'd need to do the Kies thing

I'm doing that right now! Thanks! ... I guess my Galaxy Nexus habits are hard to break! LOL!
Sorry to hijack the thread but I also got my G.Note, but yesterday . Got it from Amazon Germany, and as soon as I took it out and connected it to the Wifi Internet it said that it had found the OTA update for the ICS.
I cancelled the update as I was not sure if it was worth it. I hear so many people saying that Gingerbread runs smoothly but that ICS is a pain. I also hear about all the camera bugs, etc that ICS has.
The question I have is: Should I keep with Gingerbread for a while longer or should I just update to ICS?
Thank you all for your advice.

I have tried Criskelo ICS, CM9, Stunner, Liquid Smooth and various GB roms. Even though I like some features of the ICS rom, I eventually settle for Chrack GB rom. It run smooth with good battery life and I have no problem runing all the applications I needs. I suggest that you use your GB rom for awhile before trying to update.

there were several updates to note (at least on mine, Base/Eplus Contract btw)
before ICS, and since ICS is not yet available OTA i think you can hit update on your phone until there are none left, then you should have the most recent Gingerbread version.
for ICS, see last post: Kies update^^
Sadly i already did the Samsung Kies update to ICS and now i have some battery problems (google cloud service and several other Wakelocks draining like a *****)
apart from that little problem ICS is working fine
Hi all and thank you for your input.
As for the last post from Aiphares, I can confirm that there is an OTA update for ICS for my phone.
If I hit update it says that an important 4.0 ROM is available and that it will be 316mb (if I remember it correctly). If I wanted to update now or later.
So I did hit later to see what your replies would be, as I did not want to be one of those asking for help how to revert to gingerbread because my phone could have horrible battery drain, or any other known ICS bug.
I would really like to have a working ICS on my phone, and hopefully something that would improve the S Pen, so that I could actually use it for my daily annotations (minutes of meetings, etc.).
Why can't Android battery just improve, I remember that from Froyo to Gingerbread the battery got much better. Well we can't have it all with these dual cores running in our pockets.
As for the custom ROMs I first want to try the official ones, and if I am am not happy with them, I'll read and read so to prevent triangles and than I'll try a Custom stable ROM.

Please do you people even read this forum?? If i was you and read all the threads about bugs (eMMC) etc. etc. i wanted to wait a bit more. Ok, you just might get lucky (or not) and wipe the phone ten times but if you're not prepare to go to the store and claim your warranty !!!
Please read the topics about bugs on ICS.

well if you feel uncomfortable you can always wait it out, i'm sure there will be more ICS updates and bugfixes

Official Update to Android 4.1.2 on N7000XXLPT? S-Pen issues!

Hello everyone. I just brought an Note with BB.N7000XXLPT, Kernel/Build XXLQ3. Unrooted with Android 4.0.3.
KIES and OTA says I have latest firmware, but I read that NOTE`s latest firmware is Android 4.1.2.
How can update to official Android 4.1.2 without rooting? Is that possible?
Now, my S-Pen is not work correctly. Sometimes works, when I press hardly, but very rarelly. Touchscreen display works just fine. Is that a common issue, is pen broken or is because Android ICS 4.0.3?
I`m new on this, just pls. help.

Where are you from? Maybe the JB update isn't available for your country until today.
You can install a Stock JB Rom (one of the official releases) with PC Odin.
Install JB and test your pen again - then you'll know if it's broken.
10x for quick answer ThaiDai. I`m from Romania. And I think the update is not ready here (it comes very slowly from carriers).
Pls. can give me advices how to install latest official stock Android with Odin, without rooting (I mean, i hope kies and OTA still working after).
Links, tutorials or something?
I just tested s-pen with testing tools and is working chaotic.
10x in advance. Jim
Dr. Ketan's thread is the thing you need.
Follow the installation steps in 1a and 1b.
You can try XXLSZ from Germany (download links in his thread).
How about S-Pen, what do you think, is a common problem or is my S-Pen broken or an 4.0.3 issue. How can I fix this?
And btw, on step 1b says to flash an custom kernel (PhilZ) first and then flash stock kernel. This make device rootable and KIES and OTG will not be available? (Allshare and Radio too)?
I try all day to do something with S-Pen, but useless. S-Pen works time to time and need really preasure to write/draw something. Sometimes I hope not cracking the display with that high pressure. I read tons of threads but never find someone with this issue. Mostly have issues with to sensitive pressure and 2mm inaccuracy (present in my case too). Help pls?
Did you install another Rom and check S-Pen after this?
ThaiDai no. I just stay on stock 4.0.3 what comes with the device. I just can`t understand why bunch of ppl over internet has problems o Note 1 with to much sensitivity at S-Pen, an I haven`t it at all. I need to stab the display to draw a single dot.
Install JB and test your pen again - then you'll know if it's broken.
You should try this first - from lamenting it will not get better.
I`ll try somehow to test my s-pen on other device or some othe s-pen on my Note to test it. If I can`t, device has guarantee certificate and that`s why I don`t update to JB, temporary. Is very strange tho...
You don`t reply to my question. If I want to update to JB, need to install (PhilZ) first and then flash stock kernel? This make device rootable and KIES and OTG will not be available? (Allshare and Radio too)?
10x in advance ThaiDai.

And you don't read what is written there. No stock kernel but a stock rom is installed.
But why do you ask JB installation questions when you do not want to install JB?
So use your certificate and let Samsung repair your device or pen
I`ll do that. And if my problem is fixed, after I`ll try an JB Rom. 10x ThaiDai.
ThaiDai, installed 4.2.1 official germany stock via Odin and works great. This week I'm going to Samsung service to solve my SPen problem.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
Solved S-Pen problem and now my Note with official kies Android 4.1.2 work almost great (a little exception with battery fast draining).
