I've got stock SG2, DVKF4, from Telstra and I rooted it using ODIN and XWKDD_insecure.
Last night, when I was updating the firmware on the phone, after reboot - all I got is SG2 boot screen with yellow triangle - after that blank screen/power off.
1) Did I brick the phone?
2) I 've been reading the forums and I can probably flash the original fireware, on there?
But I am not sure whethere I should do the kernel as well as it was rooted.
I've already got files from intratech but - not sure which steps to do - kernel and firmware or just firmware only.

First: If you can get into a download mode then you have NOT bricked the phone. You can call it a soft brick max. In my opinion get an odin flashable stock firmware and flash that by putting your phone into download mode. you can find a complete guide how to do that on samfirmware.com
hope this helps

As described above, yellow triangle normally suggests Download Mode so no you have not bricked your phone yet. If you had you would see a different and rather obvious screen where you would know you have bricked your phone. As long as you can initiate Download Mode and you have the tools on your machine, Odin, Heimdall etc than you should be able to recover from this situation quite easily. It's always best to read as much as possible when choosing a Rom / Kernel pairing if you are moving away from stock. Even though we may have the same devices it does not mean we will all have the same experience when flashing new Roms...
I would suggest Firmware first, then Kernel.
Hope you resolve your issue.
black screen on sg2
Hi I had a problem with my sg2. I was trying to remove the yellow triangle after putting ICS on it. All of a sudden it went to yellow triangle screen and then went blank. However I did not noticed the the phone came on still but no Galaxy boot up screen. If you have this sort of problem, the phone can still go into download mode.
1. Take the battery out and put it back in
2. Hold the Home(middle) button, volume down and power on button for about 10 sec. Just as you would to put in download mode
3. Open Odin and leave it open
4 While Odin is open press the volume up (Odin will indicate that it is in Download mode since the phone cannot).
5. Download the files from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=788778&d=1321782075
6. Extract the files and click the PDA button in Odin and select the file called 1
7. The phone will start but only stays at yellow triangle and turn off.
8. Now u can easily put the phone in DL mode and Recovery mode and re-flash with an ICS version you your choice. Either using Odin or putting it on your SD.
This worked for me...Using the original Kernel did nothing at all. Enjoy...I still need to get rid of my triagle after reflashing but I think I need an original ICS kernel or something. I will experiment with my phone more...Hope this help.

Hi Everyone,
I had previously been running the stock I9000 JK3 ROM on my Captivate with xcal's reoriented kernel. Today I decided to install the I9000 JL2 Rom from samfirmware.com.
I started ODIN, entered Download Mode, and flashed the ROM (in the PDA section) with no problem. After the flash had completed, the phone attempted to reboot, but there was nothing but a black screen. I tried every way I know to get into Download mode but nothing works. I don't even get the Phone--!--Computer image that I've gotten in the past when I've messed up a flash.
I've read that this kind of brick occurs when the boot loader is corrupted, and that the only way to fix it is to use a RIFF JTAG box. My question is: what did I do wrong? I flashed many ROMs before, all through ODIN, but was always able to get back to stock if necessary.
My research suggests that it has something to do with sbl.bin. Can someone enlighten me? How can I tell if a ROM will mess up my bootloader? Do ROMs that mess up bootloaders contain the sbl.bin file?
Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
If your getting the phone / computer screen you should still be able to restore.
Use the following method to get into DOWNLOAD mode and then Odin 1 click back to stock.
Take out the battery,SIM, and external SDCard
Turn on Odin JH7 1 Click Back to Stock
Plug in your USB cable
While holding down the Volume +/- Button place the batter back in.
If you get the gray battery charging signal - you need to attempt it again. Should go into DOWNLOAD mode and you can restore your phone back to stock.
The SBL.bin is bad mojo if you fubar it as it has important things like being able to use your buttons to get into the different modes (download/recovery). I don't know what else it controls as I'm not a developer.
Also read this on the General thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911
interesting stuff about the SBL.bin - so Flashers beware!
Thank you so much for the information. Unfortunately, I do not see the Phone--!--Computer icon, and I confirmed that the ROM that was flashed did indeed contain an SBL.bin file. The boot loader is most certainly bricked.
I really think a warning about the SBL.bin file should be stickied somewhere prominent, so other people don't make the same mistake that I did.
Thanks Again
It works for me

This procedure will get you back to stock JPU ROM via Odin and Download Mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10449932&postcount=7
Then once your phone is working again you can go ahead and flash to a custom ROM which I'm guessing you know how to do. Let me know!
Ok dude I`m doing it now, fingers kriss crossed!!!
Ok this happened....
I took usb out, restarted pc, then phone went into recovery mode, I did a factory/data wipe, same with cache, was about to restart phone, now there`s a white box with an orange arrow comming out of it and a little green android man?
I pressed menu button, it brought up recovery, I restarted, went passed the white logo screen to swirling S logo screen, also played music, now at black screen....
Still in black screen but every 20 or so seconds it vibrates once then 3 quick times???
After sometimes it is required to do a factory reset to get it working. If your flash was succesfull try to factory reset it in recovery mode.
Tried Odin again and got the same error, so when I get into recovery mode I should factory reset everything?
Tried to get back into recovery from download mode and got the bricked screen!!! Its hopeless now is`nt it
I can still get into download mode.....
I dont really get what you are trying to do.
Can you get in recovery mode and do a factory reset???
I was in recovery and did that and it got to the swirling S logo screen then screen went black, vibrated once then 3 short ones every 30 or so seconds and thats it, it did`nt go any further.....
I keep getting a FAIL when I try to flash using Odin
I notice when I`m putting in the info in to PDA PHONE CSC areas, I dont see where I`m supposed to use this..
MODEM_I9000XXJPU.tar.md5
I followed it all step by step, or i dont see it in the steps
Hmm i had that screen many times but always able to flash with Odin. Are you sure you got the drivers on your pc?Make sure that you havent Kies running,on try or in backround,or any other program that is used to connect your phone. Also its always good to use a free USB port on your pc,and by saying free i also mean that it not one of the front panel USB cuz those ones sometimes are shared.

Repartition was checked, should I put the modem one in the phone section?
2. Open Odin AS the Man said .
Download here: http://db.tt/QuA1G6s
That is a sure working Odin. The one I use. Extract that and run Odin3 v1.3.exe
3. In Odin:
check Re-Partition
Click PIT and select s1_odin_20100512.pit
Check and click PDA and select I9000XXJPU-REV03-PDA-low-CL747761.tar.md5
Check and click PHONE and select I9000XXJPU-REV03-PDA-low-CL747761.tar.md5
Check and click CSC and select GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJPU.tar.md5
Do not touch any of the other options. Leave them the way they are.
3. Exit Kies (make sure it is not running AT ALL).
4. Put your phone into DOWNLOAD mode (volume down + power + home) and plug into your computer
5. Click START in Odin... if Odin gets stuck for a LONG time (progress bar isn't moving at all in both phone and Odin).. unplug phone, pull battery, restart computer and repeat from step 2.
6. Once Odin says it succeeded wait for phone to reboot.
I`m still getting a FAIL on it.
I download that Odin, reinstalled the Samsung drivers and disabled anything related to the phone.
I tried it even without the sim car and sd card in cause I read one post that had tried it and it worked.
From the instructions it looks like I`m using 3 of the 4 files download, remember that modem one.
I definitely have to use that same file twice for PDA and phone?
I followed these instructions to the letter...
file:///C:/Users/Colm/Desktop/xda-developers%20-%20View%20Single%20Post%20-%20[Q]%20i9000%20can%20not%20boot.htm
I`m not sure which one is the right Odin to use, but I tried the both of them and still the same results.
There both v1.30, the gt-p1000 is the one from the previous post..
I`m even trying different USB ports...
Ya fuppin BEAUTY, I did it, I put into the phone section in Odin that modem file and here`s what I got...
NoW I have fireware 2.2.1

A Bell Canada Galaxy S I900UGJH2?
Looking to revert back to 2.1 from a leaked Bell 2.2 build, since the phone ended up in a boot loop, managed to get it to the Galaxy S screen after flashing the above build with the 512 pit, but thats about it, its just a black screen ATM, recovery mode doesnt work with the 3 button combo but download mode does, am I missing something here? Do I need to add phone and CSC files too?
Yes. Any firmware starting with i9000UG is a Canadian firmware.
Search the general forums for someone who has linked to a JH2 firmware that also includes an SBL file. Depending on which 2.2 firmware you flashed, you might need this.
If none of this works, flash JL2 and call it in for service/replacement.

Thanks a lot I appreciate the reply, Ill take a look around for the JH2
If this doesnt work and I flash the JL2 do I only need to flash that PDA and the 512 PIT? I assume I would flash the JL2 pretending that I upgraded to 2.2 when it was official in Dec and now its messed up to have it covered under warranty?
Here is how you fix this:
- First off, download odin3 v1.7
- then download i9000UGJL2 and i9000UGJH2 (the JL2 is the recent stock rom, JH2 is 2.1 that your phone shipped with, they are both .tar files so make sure you see that)
- download the latest speedmod kernel from the development section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
get the "speedmod-kernel-k12p-500hz.zip"
- boot odin
- put your phone into download mode then plug it into your computer
- odin should see it (you will see under ID:com)
- click the pda button and locate the speedmod.zip file
- click start, it wont take long and your phone will reboot (you should have recovery mode now but we're still not done)
- put your phone into download mode again
- close and reopen odin so it's back to default
- plug your phone in and make sure odin detects it
- leave everything default but check off "phone bootloader update"
- click the PDA button and find the i9000UGJL2.tar file
- click start (this time it will take longer and flash the entire ROM)
- now when you go into recovery mode it should ***** about dbdata missing
- put your phone back into download mode
- close and start odin again (leave everything default this time)
- plug in your phone and make sure odin detects it
- click the PDA button
- locate the i9000UGJH2.tar file and then click start
- this will flash the stock rom your phone shipped with, once it's done it should boot fine
- then you can plug kies in and flash JL2 on top OR flash a custom rom
- good luck, let me know I can post the stock ROM's if you cant' find them but they are on this site somewhere
PS your phone isnt' dead, so dont waste your time getting it replaced, it can be brought back to life so dont worry. I was in the same boat as you once and if this works dont forget the thanks button!

Ok well I reflashed back to JH2 already, Im pretty sure I was on JL2 when it went into a force close, then was just constantly boot looping, so now Im on JH2 and it boots but only to a black screen, after flashing it through Odin the phone reboots itself into recovery mode, I tried doing the update.zip that was showing in the card but it gives me the E:Error business, so I just selected the reboot, which takes me to the black screen after the S logo is done
My only concern is if I apply the speedkernel pda and that doesnt fix it then if they were to actually check the phone and they find the modified kernel they will know I was messing about with it, one other issue I was concerned about was not being able to get into download mode, since I cant get into recovery with 3 button, the speedmod kernel doesnt change any of the secondary bootload options does it?
*edit* I misread what you posted so it does change the bootload by allowing the 3 button to work
You can always flash back, if it takes a flash through odin then it will flash back. If you follow those steps you should be fine, msg back

Thanks Ill give it a try
Ill post back how it goes
The challenge is that the symptoms being reported are also associated with unrecoverable problems. It would be great if you could enter recovery and indicate what if any error msg you're getting below the menu.
If the above directions from spectre85 don't work (great post BTW), don't kill yourself. Call it in for a replacement.

Ya I agree, once you get into recovery mode you can tell us the error you are getting, if it's complaining about missing dbdata or some kind of missing data your still ok. If it's the dreaded can't mount SDcard then your sunk
Bahh I think its soft bricked I tried spectre's advice and it was boot looping again, plus even with the new bootload it still wouldnt go into recovery, I just put on JL2 and am gonna bring it to Bell..... good thing there was issues with the version so I can get this under warranty
Thanks for your help guys I appreciate it
Yall got double and triple thanked
My father in law bought a new phone SGS on O2 and I offered to unlock it as I have unlocked my husbands last week (he's was on O2 as well but in 2.1 or 2.2.1 version I think-froyo?)
Before I continue may I say I know you guys out there know so much more than me and I really need your help. I really tried to help unlocking this phone and for hours I searched and read things like reboot, download mode, recovery mode, flashing, JKV and so many other words and letter that I could not understand. Very few I understood in the end but may have messed up badly (?).
Please, I need help and please treat me as if I were your mum or even grandma. Step by step in simple normal English please.
My father in law's version is 2.3.3
I tried unlocking it the way I unlocked my husband's but didn't work. After looking for hours I thought that the best way to do it would be to downgrade from 2.3.3 (gingerbread (?)) to 2.2.1 (froyo (?)) and then unlock it.
I found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089989
and tried to follow it.
I downloaded EZRom and EZboot-Froyo-1.0.tar.md5 from the same post.
I followed:
•Download the right version from section above
•Reboot your phone into Download mode
•Connect your phone to computer
•Run EZOdin
•Select EZboot-Froyo-1.0.tar.md5 or EZboot-GingerBread-1.0.tar.md5as a PDA file in EZOdin
•Check the "Phone Bootloader Update" checkbox
•Click Start
I waited for the phone to turn off and feel the little vibration but didn't. Instead it just froze at the first screen when you turn on the phone. The black background with white letters: Samsung Galaxy...
I waited and waited and as nothing was happening I then I took the battery out. Put it back in and tried turning it on. I wouldn't it would just stop and that same screen, the black and white one.
I reread
•Wait until phone reboots and make it reboot into Recovery
SO then I remembered in the many threads I read about the recovery mode so 3 clicked vol up + button at them bottom and turn on bottom.
It gives me a few options. When I click on reboot all it does is show me the black and white screen again and nothing else. ah!!!
I took the battery off and put it back on many times, I also selected the fatory reset option and tried different buttons but nothing. Please help me.
I'm happy to phone any of you guys to help me and guide me even if it's just to put the phone back to what it was before, turning on normally, etc. I'm feeling really sad and a bit stressed as these days are supposed to be a nice time to spend with my little ones and family.
Anyway, please ask me anything.
Thank you so much in advance. I really hope I didn't do anything wrong and I'm just stuck because I'm ignorant in this matter. Thank you
I was never a fan of EZ-stuff.
That said, think you can easily solve that flashing your phone with odin and a proper rom. At this point i am unclear about what bootloaders you have on your phone since you've tried a downgrade.
Without getting into further details (sorry, at work atm). You can get tutorials easy for all of this around this forum.
I'd get Odin, get a proper stock rom from samfirmware with bootloaders included and flash it fresh from start with that. Doesn't really matter if it's froyo or ginger as long as it includes bootloaders.
You'll be left with a working phone at this point.
From here, if you still want to try to unlock it, i'd flash a kernell that would get me root (like the ChainFire one) since i find this the safest and easiest way of getting root on your phone and do a backup of your EFS partition (preferably saved in your computer or wherever outside your phone). This is very important, if you lose of mess up with this part of your phone it will be a pain.
Now, there are several ways of unlocking this phone, the only one i found to be most reliable (but not the easiest one) is to manually edit the nv_data.bin file (located in your EFS partition in hexadecimal.
There's a tut right here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045&highlight=unlock
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply although you are working!!! Really appreciate it.
I'll try your suggestion but I don't know how to choose the right stock rom with bootloader from samfirmware. I went to the website and registered but don't really know what to do.
I know you are working so might not be able to help me, may be someone else?
Here's where I am. Update. I found a list of firmware. This is the last one on Samfirmware.com.
Europe Samsung I9000 Firmwares.
I9000XXJVS ##
512.PIT
2.3.5
2011 September 8
CSC = I9000OXAJVS
DOWNLOAD
Things I need: (I think)
-Download a firmware (should I use the lastest one?) or 2.2 or 2.3.3? . Is there one better than the other? or is it my choice? How can I choose the best one for me?
-Odin. I have OdinMultiDownloader v4.03 in my desktop. Is that the best thing to use or should I use Ezodin. I don't know what the difference is.
-(Do I need to download or do anything else?)
Things I should do:
-Put phone in download mode
-Plug it to the laptop
-Open Odin (or Exodin?)
-click PDA. Choose the fie I downloaded-firmware.
(-after this I don't know what else I should do or tick or untick)
Am I in the right track or completely off it?
Thank you again to anyone taking the time to read this.
Download Jvt From sammobile. com, you need Odin on your PC (1.7 or 1.8) plus Samsung drivers. Read there flashing guides carefully, check you have download
Mode, battery charged > 50% etc
There is also a video on youtube which shows you how to upgrade to jvt.
Sent using TCP/IP
Sounds like you've got the boot-loop problem, which means that you most likely "soft-bricked" the phone. Don't worry, this isn't that big of a deal and can be fixed with relative ease. I agree with the posters above, a clean flash with Odin will probably fix your problem and get you out of the boot-loop.
I'll go into a bit more detail with some steps (feel free to correct me if I missed anything)
1. Download Odin 1.85 here.
2. Head over to Samfirmware.com and grab the latest firmware for the phone. I recommend Gingerbread 2.3.5 (JVT).
3. Make sure your computer has the proper drivers installed so it can communicate with your Samsung Galaxy GT-I9000. If you've flashed the phone before with your computer then you probably have the drivers installed, but here's a link for them just in case: Samsung USB Drivers
4. Enter download mode on your phone, depending on your firmware, it could be Vol down + power + home OR Vol up + power + home. Pull the battery out, pop it back in, and hold those three buttons until the phone turns on.
If you can't enter download mode with the 3-button hold method, then you might have to do so via ADB with the command "reboot download".
Getting into download mode is pretty critical, as you cannot progress further without it.
5. Once you're in download mode (should see a triangle with an Android shoveling stuff in it), plug your phone into your computer's USB port and open Odin. In Odin, press "Reset" on the right hand side. Odin should be able to detect your phone (this is indicated by a yellow box on the left side). I'm using a PC, so inside the yellow box I see something like this: 0:[COM9]. On a Mac it probably says something different, but as long as you see the yellow box appear then it's all good.
If you don't see the yellow box, then there's no communication between your phone and the computer, which means that you may have to reinstall the Samsung USB drivers.
6. With the contents in the firmware package that you downloaded from Samfirmware.com extracted, load them onto Odin accordingly.
PIT: use s1_odin_20100512.pit
PDA: JVT (sometimes the PDA is labeled CODE instead)
PHONE: JVT (sometimes labeled as MODEM instead)
CSC: use HOME-MULTI-OXAJVT (should be about 9.5 MB in size)
Since your father-in-law's phone was originally 2.3.3, you shouldn't have to alter the bootloader with Odin, so leave the bootloader field empty.
7. Once you've loaded up all the necessary files, make sure Re-partition and Auto-reboot is checked. Leave the rest of the checkboxes as it.
8. Press Start. This should initialize the flashing of the new firmware. After the phone has been flashed, it should reboot automatically and should hopefully be able to get past the Galaxy S black and white logo (aka. boot loop).
9. The phone should be in working order now. I used this method to unlock my SGS: SIM Unlock on the SGS. With this method, your phone needs to be rooted, so head on over to ChainFire's thread here to install his kernal which is already rooted.
Flashing firmware can be pretty scary since nobody wants to end up with a brick that costed $400 and it seems like so much can go wrong, but hopefully the steps I've provided helped. Good luck!
Hi everyone. Im not normally in this section as i have an x8 but my friend has seen all the roms, mods and updates ive done so he tried to do it to his galaxy s i9000 without rooting or unlocking his bootloader. I asked him what he did he said he just tried to update software with keis but now it wont turn on just white screen with a red triangle in the middle i hope its download mode as i dont have a galaxy i dont really no but the battery has died and it wont charge im guessing hes damaged the bootloader am i right and if so whats the best corse of action to tepair it. Thanks.
You can check if it is in download mode by pluggin it in pc with odin. See the wiki page what it says about soft brick.
Soft-Bricked
After flashing a rom you might not be able to enter the Download Mode by pressing Volume Down + Home + Power. In this case a so called 'JIG' would be helpfull.
You could build it on your own: [HOWTO] [REF] Get Download Mode without 3-button combo using homemade JIG
... or buy a preassembled one on a well known marketplace.Hint: There is no difference between a JIG for Samsung S/S2 or S-Plus.
See if you can go into d0wnload mode with vol down home and power. If that works go and try to find the stock firmware for the phone and download and extract. Download odin and put csc pda and phone/modem in there rightful places. 512 pit in pit section. Pit usually comes with odin download. If not find it somewhere. Repartition checked and hit start. It should reboot when done. It will problaby take a couple of min to boot but be patient. If it starts to go into boot loop put back into download mode again and reflash. Its very hard to mess up the phone to where you cant fix it. So relax and watch tuts or whatever helps you best. I know of a link i that i will find and post for you when i do.

DEAD bricked phone
So, my friend's phone (hopefully she'll stay my friend after this) was turning itself on and off all on it's own. So I (no good deed goes unpunished) suggested that I will upgrade her firmware for her. She had 2.3.3 firmware. I downloaded the odin1.7 as well as a package of all the info for 2.3.5 firmware upgrade. I flashed the phone- originally only using the PDA option with a file called: CODE_I9000XXJVS_CL565837_REV03_user_low_ship
It worked, the phone restarted and showed the firmware as being 2.3.5.
I don't know why, but I thought it would be a good idea to update the CSC and the pit and the modem as well- so I did that. when this was finished - though odin said that the flashing was successful the phone is completely unresponsive. The computer doesn't recognize it, it doesn't show any signs of life at all- like it's in the dark ages and there is no electricity in it.
HELP!!!
First question: do you think a jig will work? how dangerous is it?
second question: is there any other option to try that I haven't come across other than changing the motherboard, and if there isn't do you know where I can get one, bear in mind I live in Israel.
Please e-mail me a copy of the response to [email protected] if you can...
Odin dosnt pick it up atall plus the batteries dead aswell now and the stupid thing wont charge so i cant evan try any thing till i find away or some one to charge it but thanks for the tips.

Try to recharge the battery from other phone or use another battery.
Check whether you have the download mode working. (Home+Power+Volume down)
If yes, put phone in download mode and flash Darky RE or any other Rom via ODIN. Try to get the recovery mod after rooting and then try ROMs.
Or try restarting the phone it may work without update also. Long press power in download mode restarts the phone. However be careful.
What is the status of the device can you go to download mode
Post your firmware files name and how you choose in the odin flasher.
Dont try anything crazy you will bricked your device more:banghead:

Alternate way to Download mode
Hi gavster26
I have been there with a buddy's phone... not a nice place.
Found a link showing this other trick ... but you have to trial and error this one on the different combos:
1. Phone off
2. USB cable pluged in
3. Odin running
4. Down (or Up - test both) Volume button + Home button + plug in the USB cable.
This booted my dead "bricked" phone into download mode.
Try it.
