Okay. Heads up. This is going to be a rant... and probably a ridiculous one.
CAN WE ALL AGREE ON A UNIVERSAL DATE FORMAT FOR ALL OF XDA TO USE?
This morning I was scrolling through the dev section trying to see what all was new and old, and realized I had to stop and carefully read each and every date to be sure of when it was actually updated. I mean, I know that today is Tuesday, March 20, 2012; but is that supposed to be 3/20/12, 20/3/12, 12/3/20, 12/20/3, 20/12/3, 3/12/20 or what!? IT'S REALLY ****ING CONFUSING!
Okay. I've said my piece. I'm calm now.

until the issue is solved, I'd suggest checking authors country of origin, afaik most of the world uses either dd/mm/yy or yy/mm/dd... while some other countries prefer the annoyingly illogical "mm/dd/yy" system

Actually, it is pretty much ONLY the US who insist on the annoyingly illogical "mm/dd/yy".
Canada, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines do use it occasionally, but not exclusively like the US.
So all we have to do is educate the Americans, and we are good ....
I'm American, and I don't have any problem with using another date format. But aside from the U.S. MM/DD/YY, I've also seen DD/MM/YY and YY/MM/DD. And the U.S. format isn't illogical, it's just different. We use MM/DD/YY because it matches the standard written date format; March 20, 2012.

The great thing about standards is there so many to choose from! I write dates as 21 March 2012. Every single letter on my desk at the moment where the date (month, anyway) is written out is in the same format.
I guess people think it is illogical because you cannot 'order' it well, digitally or mentally. In that regard, the best format, and indeed the one I use for digital files to preserve sorting, is 2012 03 21. I wish it were an adopted standard, but I cannot see it ever happening.
I'll tell you what is illogical; we still use the imperial measurement system. Now that's illogical!
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Hey, I'm one of those Americans...don't have to bother with me. I use the dd/mm/yy...not only that, I don't use that stupid am/pm crap either. 24 hr clock for me. Now if we can get everyone to use UTC time, it would make like easier too. Not only that, I prefer the metric system most of the time...easier than screwing around with fractions.

lemme join in the foray a bit...
from where i am from (a old brit colony) we write it as dd/mm/yyyy....no issue with that.
when reading documents (esp. invoices) from usa where they write mm/dd/yyyy confusion starts when dd/mm are single digits ranging from 1 to 12...any issues with that??......no not really,u jus have to turn your mind around a bit and adapt.
things, processes are dead...the living human mind is not....jus turn around and bend over a lil'...wun kill you...
that being said,i think the universal thing we should agree on is the universal downgrade, rooting and upgrading of roms.
coz we have too many versions of roms being rootable and too many version to use to root and upgrade....too much confusion for noobs...we dun see that happening in the HTC phones...jus samsung's....
How the hell is MM/DD/YYYY illogical? It's the most logical of them all. Why would you put the day before the month? Shouldn't you know what month you're in, before you read the day? Oi!

Absolutely not. Should it happen to me, I'd need to know the location first. Then we can talk dates.
I myself prefer military time, metric system, Italian coffee, British tea, Swedish snus, the Galaxy Note...but I am absolutely, stubbornly dead set on MM/DD/YYYY.
screw it, let's all switch to star date, the current time and date is: -310781.2291919652

3. as a 3rd year medical student, I'm just under $200,000 in debt and before I graduate you can tack another $60k or more onto that

1. What are common phrases you say every day?
2. What are some uncommon phrases you don't say every day?

Bloody, ****e, Pint, One more Pint, Wanker, Give me one more pint B***, Hell
2. What are some uncommon phrases you don't say every day?
Elevator, Garbage
Lol, I'm not British.
EDIT: Sorry if my stereotypes offended any of you brits
Haha, I'm sincerely hope that our British forum users are not offended by this thread! As much as we poke fun at British English, I'm sure you guys find our American English just as funny!
One more question to be added for the brits!
Why do you guys add extra useless letters to your places names?
Eg. Leicester Square is pronounced "lester square" rather than like it's spelled (ie "le-sester square"). And Gloucester Road is pronounced "gloss-ter road" rather than "gl-ow-sester road".
Lol. For some reason this thread brought this quote to mind: "Austria! Well, then. G'day mate! Let's put another shrimp on the barbie!" Gotta love Dumb and Dumber.
No offense intended, just interested in the British peeps over here. Especially demon_man's phrase. What is that translated to american???
I find your questions offending. You have insulted Detroit. tsk. tsk. tsk. OMG! My Detroit home-bois! told me where I can go to get my line-up. Gonna look sexy again tomorrow!
1. What are common phrases you say every day?
I don't tend to say any phrases as such, I guess I am boring like that.
2. What are some uncommon phrases you don't say every day?
Garbage, Trash. (Its Rubbish....) I don't know. If I don't say them everyday, how am I going to remember them.
3. Why do you drive on the left side of the road?
Because this is the correct side to drive on, given a vast percentage of people are righties, it makes sense to always be able to have your strongest arm on the wheel? (My left arm dislocates at the shoulder quite often, so thats my excuse)
4. Do you all visit these..... places for phones?? This is a quote from Demon_Man, a british person
I find myself reguarly visiting Carphone Whorehouse to see what the latest stock is and avaliability. Sometimes you may have to pay a little more then other places, but I find it is often worth it.... I believe another term would be brothel?

I know this much: they (we) drive on the "wrong" side because of the Romans. They used to carry their weapons right hand while on horses and as they've gone past each other they could fight! The same principle applies today while going up and down stairs or on pavements.

People on radio interviews say "To be honest..." a lot, as if they never are the other times! They also say "I don't mean to be disrespectful but..." meaning exactly the opposite. Footballers also say "I have a calf..." or "I have an Achilles..." meaning they have something wrong with them. I then say "Really? when did you discover that? Mine were always there anyway." They also say "I mean..." a lot. The oldies say "Please!" and "Thank you" a lot. Footballers and other athletes always talk on the third person while talking about themselves. And they talk about the weather a lot.

First week of February started last Wednesday, which was the first of February, so yes, this is the end of the first Week from a calendar-point-of-view, and if they meant the actual END of this week then they damn well should have said so.

My week ends 7 days after the start of the week. Be that Mon, Tues, Wed... This is how we do it on Earth. I wonder about Archos' calendar! No big deal though. Maybe next time they dont make an announcement saying 1st week of February, with all retail units shipping with it by the end of the month. I really dont think they meant Q1 if they said 1st week and by the end of February..Also, we already had a Friday AND Saturday this month, effectively making the end of the 1st week that much sooner (by some's logic) So either way you slice it... 1st week of the month is over... Just saying. I HAVE been told im stupid before, so maybe me and thousands of other people just read wrong. And April 2013!?!? Were all gonna die 12/21/12! Thats not gonna work!
I'll never buy a goddamn Archos Product again, that's for sure... I just wrote to support about the ICS Update, and I bet you I won't get any kind of answer to that question.
Shoulda known that you get what you pay for, and for a Tablet to come this cheap, they've had to cut corners elsewhere...
cant understand, why you are so pissed of. archos ist one of the first manufacturer, who rolls out ics on tablets. stay calm, wether they need some hours or days more.
but go ahead and buy other products form other manufacturers, from which you wont get any update after all the others have it.
[illusion] ics will come without bugs on the archos-devices and everybody will be lucky with it [/illusion]
Yeah right, i've seen how fast Archos are with updating their software.
Show's over, they had their week and they blew it.
Either stick to your schedule, or do not announce a release date, it's as simple as that.
you would not want a bug ridden version of ics im sure it will be here vert soon
Jadephyre, I think you're overreacting. Up near the top of this thread you said "it's not the end of the world for me" but yet here you are, acting rather like it is, and in fact acting quite pissy about it. I understand your frustration and so does everybody else, but calm down. Also, many things have been pointed out to you: Archos is a small company, the is release will be one of te first few on tablets, and also you should consider te fact that it takes hard work to get something as big as this ready. So again, we all understand your frustration, but calm down.
Edit: I apologize, I meant in your other thread you said it wasn't the end of the world for you, I got the two threads confused.

And it wouldn't have been if they just said something about the release date and them not being able to make it.
Yet here we are and NO info what so ever... maybe you should have read the post closely, as that is exactly what I said.
I can understand Developers not meeting their deadline, but they should frickin' inform their customers about that, for crying out loud.
Or is that too much to ask in this day and age, even from a small Outfit such as Archos... really ?
Not sure if that was aimed at me, but I'll add that I was a dev at one time, so I do understand the time consuming processes (not for android tho mind you, I did windows app dev)

Anybody watch it? I love this show. Just started up a new season here in America. Just learned it came from Britain and is a world wide show.

Really is world wide.
I've always wanted to travel the world and this show makes me want to keep my nose clean in another country. Especially in the 3rd world countries. Just a great show imo. You get to learn about other countries, while seeing some wild stories.
I also love this serie, in fact I have always been fascinated for everything related to prisons (though I´ve never been there, lol). My favourite film is "The Shawshank redemption" and my favourite serie is OZ. And about this serie it is very useful to show young people how they can get into a major problem if they try to make "easy money" that way. And believe me, prisons are not the same in a developed country than in a poor one (I come from one of these).

I can't but help feel that most of these of the people are idiots or at least didn't think before they did what they did. Even the people who went to other countries to bring back a suitcase filled with Levi's, did you not think that if it was that easy this guy would be doing it every week? Of course your luggage is lined with heroin. They don't want to get in trouble for it, so they send you to get it.
The ones I do feel sorry for are the ones backpacking through the country side and get kidnapped or locked up for being spies and such. Those people were just going on vacation and bam, you're in jail. Part of the reason I went backpacking across the South part of USA and not in Mexico or South America. I should have done it in Canada, but eh, maybe another day.

National Geographic aka NatGeo. Last weeks season premiere comes on again before the new episode. New episode at 10 pm eastern time. Last week was badass, reminds me of me if that was to happen to me. I really liked it.
The show has really changed since it first started. Used to they danced around the issue of torture and never actually said it. Just said "he hit me", then you see them come out of the room with one eye swollen shut, busted lip, missing teeth. Like they want to show how much the person got hit but can't say it because of relations or something behind the scenes is keeping them from editing in that they were tortured. Now, they just say it, and depict it in the show. Pretty real now.

The metric system has been officially sanctioned for use in the United States since 1866, but it remains the only industrialised country that has not adopted the metric system as its official system of measurement. Not only will the metric system finally allow the US to easily communicate and trade with other nations, It would also eliminate the need of fractions making math and engineering measurements much easier to create and read. On December 23, 1975, President Gerald Ford signed the Metric Conversion Act into law; this act gave official sanction for the United States to convert to the metric system of measurement. The money saved up for the conversion was later put into the army and we gave up metrication. www[DOT]nist[DOT]gov/pml/wmd/metric/upload/1136a.pdf
Alright. Let me just give one example. NASA lost a $125 million Mars orbiter because a Lockheed Martin engineering team used English units of measurement while the agency's team used the more conventional metric system for a key spacecraft operation, why? Because of the US using customary. Engineers have to convert everything they do to metric, it would be easier to just do it in metric in the first place? Metric is accurate without the need of fractions. When he said trade, he did not mean Currency, he meant the fact that we make our things to customary units and the other countries to metric units. What if you ordered a computer and thought the measurement was in inches but it turned out to be centimeters? When we send our blueprints to factories outside of the USA, we have to convert everything. It takes a lot of time already just to design everything, but now we have to convert the measurements? People who get Fs in mathematics could get As if it wan't for having to simplify fractions and having to work with them in technology classes and workshops and in regular math class. Decimals are a hundred times easier.
How about every country switches to our system instead?
It would be fantastic if this happened... but honestly, the majority of people in the U.S. simply can not handle it. I'm sure the majority of folks here on this forum would do great, though...
Here in Southern Arizona they were going with the push to go metric on one highway (I-19):

"Citing motorist confusion arising from the metric signs on I-19, Arizona DOT's Tucson district announced that new signs on I-19 would use United States customary units."

So I'll have to learn all that kilometer, meter bs? No.

One kilometer? That's like 10°F, right?

Ah but metric makes so much more sense to those that actually use math. As the OP hinted at, it's just one more thing helping the U.S. lag behind the rest of the world. More of a hassle, but still. ...though really, nothing much for the typical person to learn beyond how to pay attention to road signs and use the correct values on their speedometer (that simple task is why we aren't metric today, IMO).

How about every country switches to our system instead?

Yeah, you're right. America's the only country smart enough to use the imperial system.

I don't use math. I'm only an engineering student.

Here is the big hurdle to overcome. Our perceptions of the things we use to measure in the current system. In the US, you say it's 10 C outside. Most of us here will scratch our heads and wonder, does that mean it's hot or cold outside? Now, you say it's 50 F, oh, ok, I better grab a sweater. To the rest of the world, you guys grew up with the metric system, we didn't. In our minds, we measure everything in our current system. I'm to old to change my ways. I have a feeling most adults hear will feel the same.

I think kids wouldn't be too butt hurt over it, it is the adults and old people who wouldn't be able to handle the change. I would be okay with lengths and weight. It is the temperature that I don't want to deal with

Wat... 50F is swimming pool weather.
At least you guys don't argue like these people down at the google+ Linux community. I posted this there and it turned into a heated debate. https://plus.google.com/u/0/103115391145623678721/posts/12nuJ9bdEhx

I have been on XDA since 2010... It is just that I have taken on a new alias so I made a new account for it. If 3 years doesn't count as much, then I don't know what does... But I did stay out of OT.
Actually, i feel the Celsius change would be far easier.
0 C: Freezing point of water
0 C-15 C: Cold
20 C: Warm
~23 C: Normal room temp
30 C+: Hot
100 C: Boiling point of water
Doesn't sound hard, starts from 0 and ends at 100 (for water) and not somewhere in between.
