1. Can you do an incremental upgrade from 024 to the latest version?
2. Is there a version that does not crash the browser when you enter into downloads?
2. How do you modify the notification ringtone (add some more into that list)?

Thanks for the answers ... I can't post in the Insanity ROM thread because I'm a new user, restricted to Q&A.
1. What I meant by incremental upgrade is an upgrade that does not require wipe/factory reset. I know you can use an app to back up your apps and restore them ... I don't want that, I want a procedure for update without reinstalling all the apps, because that does not work perfectly, you still lose settings.
2. I tried to install 026 over 024 without factory reset/wipe and ended up in an infinite reboot cycle. After that, I still did the factory reset and tried 026 just to see if the android browser doesn't crash anymore when I enter into downloads ... sadly, it still crashes, so I just restored my backup of 024.
It's "insanity" that such a basic function stays broken in so many rom revisions IMO. The android browser is the best browser on android overall ... I don't want to use opera, firefox or whatever.
3. I thought I did, but I'll check again. But even if there are more sounds to pick from, that does not help me in adding my own notification ringtone to that list.
To update just download to sd card, go to nitrality/backup & restore/flashcwm and flash, all apps and settings stay, then just repeat procedure and flash packs and nitrality apps as required, job done
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
To add your own sound just create the file and push to relevant folder

Also re. Browser, google browser really isn't that good, I have heard problems downloading with it, but that isn't unique to insanity, go forth and experiment!
edit.....if you want to get into insanity thread to post all you have to do is notch up 10 posts, then i think you can post anywhere

Do I need a special upgrade package for that?
Because ... isn't nitrality/backup&restore/flash_cwm_package the same as entering recovery mode and selecting the cm026 zip that got me into an endless reboot?
I searched for the Altair notification and the ringtone folder is:
/system/media/audio/notifications
The actual notification is an ogg file, but I presume mp3's will work.
Hard to believe there's no actual UI option for that ... you can set the ringtone using the music player, but you can't set the notification ringtone that way.
I'm all for light/fast software, but if the software is buggy and it's lacking basic functions that are super simple to add but are ignored because the developer did not do a proper specification, it becomes pointless. Fast and light is nothing without stable and elegant.

I disagree, the google browser is the best, and it's especially fitting for the light and fast concept of insanity rom.
My suggestion is do a fresh install
Procedure
A) download cmxxx
B) download all the cm packs
C)flashezbase 2...allow to reboot
D) flash cmxxx through recovery...allow to reboot
E)go to nitrality/backup restore
F)flash each pack..allow to reboot each time
G)go to nitrality/apps and load apps you want (calender apps important)
H)change dpi in nitrality ui if required
I)explore and play
J) marvel at speed/donate/thank
* when you restore your apps don't restore data, and dont restore any samsung apps, they won't work
Smile

well from what i have gathered it doesnt work well at the moment with deodexed roms so my comments still stand.....and i very much doubt any of your problems are due to nitr8 errors, he is a very well respected dev who is very thorough, if you dont like his rom there are plenty more to try out there, as for the mp3 thing, im guessing that you will need to convert to .ogg, but that is just a guess
sometimes you need to do a double flash if it reboots,ie flash through nitrality, if it loops then do 3 button recovery and reflash, but this problem was sorted im sure, but worth a try,
the point of this rom is that it is as small as possible, so adding your own notification tone isnt such a big deal, he wont change things just for one little moan!
Thanks for your help ... maybe I wasn't clear about what I mean by apps ... I don't mean the app packs you download to complete the insanity install, I meant my own installed apps.
You know, installing a new OS version shouldn't mean a re-format of the system partition and a re-install and re-customization of all 3'rd party apps.
That is ABSOLUTE basic functionality, just like changing the notification ringtone. If a ROM doesn't include that, there is something wrong with the concept ... Still, I didn't request anything.
But as it is, it's also not worth donating for insanity rom. I only donate for perfect roms. I donated for darky 9.5 but not for 10.1, that drove me to insanity.
I have to ask you slaphead20, are you associated with nitr8 and insanity?

if you are updating from insanity to insanity all user apps and system settings stay put...as i stated before, i recommended a fresh start to eliminate the bad flash factor, as it seems that you have a some time corrupted or made a mistake... of course you will deny that but it is just part of the process of elimination!
as for am i associated to nitr8, im just a user that helps out a lot on his thread, and anywhere else i can as i have time on my hands due to the fact that i have terminal cancer...so stop being paranoid, im just trying to help you and get to the bottom of your problems and share my experience as i have been with insanity for a long time and know nitr8s work pretty well....in short im just an ordinary joe! also donating is up to the individual, nitr8 has a full time job, all donations go towards future dev and equipment to speed up rom production, and if you start looking around you would appreciate just how much of his own time he puts in FOR FREE....into this forum...as do all devs
Relax, I am not paranoid and I don't suspect you of anything ... LOL, what would I suspect you of? Liking specific ROM's is not a crime (or maybe on XDA it is, I have to check the FAQ).
I just went to the insanity ROM thread and saw you help a lot of people there, and thought maybe you're associated with the project. Which you should think about IMO, if you do it anyway and plan to do it in the future.
I'll try and update from 024 to 027 ... maybe it was a bad flash before, you never know. I still have the 024 backup so there's nothing to lose.
And about donation: if commercial developers only get money for finished ready-to-use software, why should open source developers get money for less? That would just make them less than they have to be.
PS: Good luck with your health. My mother had a breast cancer scare 5 years ago ....

did you do a fresh install as I suggested? I always do factory reset before and and after the ezbase install and never have problems, and the browser bug as you know is not a problem with insanity, but a conflict between the browser and deodexed roms. All the best

No, there's nothing in the changelog that would deserve the effort to wipe/reinstall.
Yes I know the browser situation, but I think there are fixes for the browser already .... I don't know if they're for cyanogen though.
On a whim I tried darky 10.2 and sadly it has bugs too:
- twlauncher hangs when you try to save the settings and restart it
- the browser sometimes just shows a blank white page instead of the loaded webpage.
What's funny is this - when you press windows you see the miniature of the actual webpage, it isn't blank, so the page is loaded, the browser just doesn't want to show it.
I tried the latest build of CM7 done by the Atrix Dev Team and it is awesome. Very reliable, fully functional, etc. I figured I'd give a whirl to compiling the real ICS version to see what that was like.
CM9 build system with the appropriate Atrix Dev Team repos in place actually spit out a working ROM. There are a number of issues aside from the general preview state of CM9. I figured I would share them in case anyone else was as curious as me. Apparently, the internal atrix dev teams are well beyond these issues already, so kudos.
Probably related to CM/atrix specific stuff
- Camera and finger print sensor don't work
- Launcher crashes pretty often
- Some openGL demos don't seem to work right (or at all)
- No mounting the SD as USB storage
Probably related to the specific gapps package I used.
- Maps crashes after 3 seconds (signal 11 - native code crash)
- Maps wants to update, but it can't (sharedId conflict if you actually remove maps)
- Earth won't run (missing the earthmobile library)
- Google Voice Search bombs (signal 4 - illegal instruction - currently suspecting the native packages might have some NEON instructions that the atrix cpu doesnt support)
- Calendar will not sync for google or exchange. App loads, but the sync service is failing
- Lots of null pointer exceptions for the NFC stuff in the log.
Anyway, this is just a build of the code that's out there, nothing special done by me. It might be useful for a dev phone or something but not for use on a real day-to-day device. Obviously it doesn't have the google apps embedded in it.

Personally, I had trouble going back to CM7 afterwards, my clockwordmod backups were screwed up (bad boot.img? cross-linked files on the SD card) and I had a very hard time getting back to the good ole working state. Ultimately, I had to restore the partial backup and then reflash the CM7 image + gapps.
So, if you were curious what building a random repo on the web and installing it on your phone would do, then feel free to try and lose all of your data. There are no updates/support for this, etc. It's just a curiosity... what is the state of this stuff right now?
BTW... I am back on CM7/Atrix now which is AWESOME!!!!

Not sure how the dev team would react to this ..we do not want any bricked phones because of this ..there maybe some experimental dangerous code in there in those sources as of now ..not sure though
Hmm... figured since I spent quite awhile getting a build set up, it might be worth sharing. I am happy to take down if it is inappropriate.
Well I am not the best person to answer that ...but yeah thanks for your work.
Eh, I wouldn't be mad about it, but I think it needs more caution. I would just wait. As you say, it kindof screwed with a lot and wasn't very usable, so why flash it? Maybe ok for someone who wants to look at the code, but I wouldn't flash it.
Awesome news man. Thanks for being a lab rat and giving us an update.

Not so much take it down as change the title of the post.
the current internal atrix-dev-team cm9 is way further ahead of this, we have some different patches. this is missleqading as it makes it sound official and is not.
Could you please change the tittle to [KANG] CM9 Test Build by "your name"
and please link to the sources, as is proper practice for open source projects
thank you

Any weird reason why half the app files are com.android.xyz.apk, com.google.android.xyz.apk and com.htc.xyz.apk?
The updater script appears with no problems though its a universal script for a few phones so will keep looking.
EDIT: Seems was something wrong with the first few lines of the script (using recovery.log). Removed those, did some other tweaking to it and now its installing. Will report back how it goes.
UPDATE: Well it boots, for some reason the bootlogo goes white after a few seconds of seeing the CM9 logo. Though it is booting. Anyway, will play around with it, seems nice and fast so far...will report
UPDATE2: Ok, its nice, but it is very buggy (OP is on point). If you are on virtuous, stay. Not much of the CM works, many settings crash (settings>display even crashes). I cant really stay on this to test more as I need a semi-working phone. But if the bugs could be fixed it would be a nice ROM. BTW it is only 4.0.3, same as others.

I cant actually upload mine because I changed alot, I reworked the folders so the holiday folder for the 'device' was just already in the system folder, where it ends up going anyways. Then I just left the simple extract /system line, so it does that. Also removed all the sdcard folder as I dont use any of those files anyway (except a few which I could download from GP if I needed it (ie. gmail)). So removed those lines and such. Also changed the boot line/folder so its on the main dir of the ROM, then using this line:
Code:
package_extract_file("boot.img", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p22");
instead I think makes things easier. I also changed the updater binary with another working rom.
Anyway, point is, not exactly where in all that it fixed it lol. But, 1 certain thing I can say is no matter what I did it said Status 6 on the zip install error. Doing report logs or something similar, go to the SD card and you will have a recovery.log file, open it and go to the end, it should say something like
Code:
line 1 col 14: syntax error, unexpected BAD
1 parse errors
E:Error in /sdcard/cm9-holiday-20121111.zip
(Status 6)
which is this:
Code:
ui_print("");
Which...is fine I thought, but idk. I removed down to line 14, removing the device lines too as I removed the device named folders, starting with the ui print formatting. Needless to say, it installed from there. So, just try removing that top part of your script and re-sign try again. Also, try the recovery.log process, that will point more to your problem.

Wait...sounds like you included gapps (gmail was referenced above)
Be careful, there is a reason cyanigenmod doesn't include gapps be default
A while ago cyanogenmod used to include gapps by default until basically one day they got a nice letter from Google telling them they can not include there apps and if they did they would be sued. So since then gapps have been kept separate for legal issues...now the chances of you getting sued are unlikely as this is unofficial and not that big of a phone plus its not like your some huge software team...but you never know...just a warning keep em if you want (many do and to this day I don't think anyone has actually faced legal charges) but I always say better safe then sorry...

So since then gapps have been kept separate for legal issues...now the chances of you getting sued are unlikely as this is unofficial and not that big of a phone plus its not like your some huge software team...but you never know...just a warning keep em if you want (many do and to this day I don't think anyone has actually faced legal charges) but I always say better safe then sorry...

thanks man.. il pull 'em out when i get back to my computer..
wait is this just de-sensed with cm9 apks?
Ok, I´m working on CM7.2 for our device, almost all works perfect except few things. I do some research, but I don´t come to any working solution. So I want to discuss with you, maybe you´ll help or give me some advice.
Sd card or internal storage isn´t mounted correctly (one of them), if I get to work one, another stops and vice versa.
In system/etc/vold.fstab
http://pastebin.com/mqAfxeEZ
In system/build.prop
http://pastebin.com/2pFt6Kmu
SD/internal (one of them) isn´t shows in filemanager. What is strange is that I find the non working one in folders! Okay, for example SD card shows properly and I find another storage in folder Root/ss (example for folders understand Root/mnt/sdcard)
If nothing better, is there a way how I can mount folder "ss" as storage or sd card?
I appreciate any help, thank you.
This rom has non working camera also (and I also found some strange things), after I solve major problems I´ll release it. I successfully ported Some Miui GB on it, but I would like to solve problems on CM7.2 and then I can work on port. Because this problems remain in port as well.
In safestrap sdcard shows in the same folder "ss"
Maybe you've already looked into it, but what about searching into Hashcode's CM7 build? for what i can remember, sd was working, but i could be wrong...anyway Hash himself could throw some advice
Sorry but i didn't have the technical knowledge to actually help you with code, but i am working on getting it
All Hashcode links on his builds are dead =(, as far as I know this is based on Hashcode and DrWowe work. I tried mount it as it is on original 2.3.4 for our device, but thats non working, there is some different mount technique or I missing some point.
Thank you for reply, I didn´t have much experience yet too. I hope so Hash could help me, or anyone whos interested.
i find it sad, that we don´t have any working cm7 for now or Miui, because I love this one.
That's why I started working on it, even though I do not have much knowledge needed.

Awww, right! i forgot that, i was able to find a build some time ago, but it was just the rom, not source code, i can find it, or re-upload (if i have it) if it's useful!
EDIT: found it on XDA right now
There you go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23905801
Thank you very much, I must go to work now, but I look at it later and we´ll see what I can do =).
edit: Problems is still same on Hascodes build.

Well, as of now, i am using eclipse rom, and in the vold.fstab the line are those:
Code:
# external sd card
dev_mount sdcard-ext /mnt/sdcard-ext:none:lun1 auto /devices/platform/goldfish_mmc.0 /devices/platform/mmci-omap-hs.0/mmc_host/mmc0
# internal eMMC
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard 25 /devices/platform/mmci-omap-hs.1/mmc_host/mmc1
They look different, maybe you could try something like this then in the build.prop the lines should change too, if i guessed right, with something like:
Code:
# Mount the internal SD card, too
ro.additionalmounts=/mnt/sdcard-ext
# ADDITIONAL_BUILD_PROPERTIES
ro.additionalmounts=/mnt/sdcard-ext
ro.vold.switchablepair=/mnt/sdcard,/mnt/sdcard-ext
Just look into your build, when you can, or i'll try with Hash's build when it's possible
It doesn´t work that way. I have already tried something similiar, this one mount blank folder, mine mount internal(or sd), but always only one of them. (I tried setting from steel droid for example) As I can see, some roms has different mount setting. Cm7 maybe has some original one, which I cannot deal with.
I get half working camera, yes! =D But not for very long...
Yeah, anyway i wrote BS on the build.prop part, the first line is wrong,

LOL, throw the mounting question away, i just miss a new build with functioning camera!
EDIT: Anyway...are you using Safestrap 3.05 for tests? i think it doesn't work at all with CM7 builds...i flashed a plain cm7.2 build in every slot and it gave me a black screen...hmmmm....
For the people who dont need this, the non mounted storage is still accessible throught filemanager, usb on pc mount it succesfull too. I see that camera is working on ICS builds, some of them, so I hope its not that hard to fix it on GB rom, maybe I´m wrong. I just need to test third party camera apps and see if one of them works. Maybe I need to merge some files from hashcodes cm7, but now I must really go =D.
edit: Yea mine edited builds are working with safestrap 3.05, thats main point =).
AWWWW YEA
I was searching some new GB goodness these days! waiting for the public build!
On hashcodes cm7 3rd party cameras worked

Okay, I have got one camera app working, but its paid app, and not working in full resolution, Camera Illusion, but paid app isnt working...free version worked, maybe its because lower resolution...
i have 2 builds here:
- CM4D3-nightly-20111116-1445
- cm-7-20120708-UNOFFICIAL-solana
i can upload, if you need.
I modified both and it work with SS3.05 Its pretty stable, but suffers from non working camera and internal storage isnt mounted right (but it works anyway)

DONE!
For reference my gits for CM7 are still around. Tho, I'm sure they are very outdated compared to 7.3 sources:
https://github.com/Hashcode/android_device_motorola_solana/tree/gingerbread
https://github.com/Hashcode/android_vendor_motorola_solana/tree/gingerbread
https://github.com/Hashcode/android_vendor_cyanogen (added the solana device)
https://github.com/Hashcode/android_frameworks_base/tree/gingerbread (with some omap4 patches)
https://github.com/Hashcode/android_system_core/tree/gingerbread (with the motorola device/permission patches in init)
https://github.com/Hashcode/android_hardware_ti_omap3 (motorola / ti patches)
https://github.com/Hashcode/android_hardware_ti_omx (motorola / ti patches)
https://github.com/Hashcode/android_hardware_ti_syslink (motorola / ti patches)
https://github.com/Hashcode/android_hardware_ti_wpan/tree/gingerbread (ti patches)
https://github.com/Hashcode/android_packages_apps_Phone/tree/gingerbread (global modes + dual modem patches for null crashes)
and a full manifest (CM7.0.x IIRC):
https://github.com/Hashcode/cm4D3/tree/gingerbread
The biggest hurdles I ran into, still centered around ducati sources for syslink 2.0 (codecs/camera).
In ways there is more for ICS/JB than there ever was for GB.
To do the camera correctly, you'd need to add more Motorola GB source to omx and dynamically link against their libs from the device used in the camera (libarc**).

Modem Update : Due to the secure boot loader we cannot flash modems via cwm or any other custom recovery. You MUST update your firmware via Odin
Touchwiz Works with some ROM's like BareBones from the I9505 forum being successfully booted on the I9505G. TW Development is ongoing for the I9505G but with the small partition size some issues exist, and are being researched and worked out.

Right now just standard kitchen tweaks on 4.3 but I am trying to get the whole device mount points set up in Cygwin and I'm having trouble because when I extract everything and open up the recovery.fstab file with notepad ++ it does not show anything but 0p1 nothing for system, boot & data so I'm lost and need help

I've found that very useful. Been able to get every AOSP/CM based ROM to boot by editing the updater-script to match the correct partition.
Has anybody noticed that photos taken with the front facing camera on CM sometimes have green distortion? That was the only bug I've found. Unfortunately, that flared up my phone OCD enough to go back to the 4.3 leak.
Thanks for putting this thread together, OP!

Here's the ROM I was messing with. I used the "old firmware" because it was the newest one when I first looked. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2349369
I've attached my modded updater script. (You will have to remove the .txt extension. Wouldn't let me upload without it.) All I had to do was edit which /dev/block the script mounts before it copies stuff over. If I recall correctly, I only had to change the dev it flashes the boot.img to. I think this might be fixed in the newest CM nightly. I've took about 20 selfies with the front facing camera and haven't had distortion at all. Before I'd get it every 3 or 4 photos.
Edit: Disregard the above. The problem is back, but I'm thinking it might be the 4.3 camera zip I've been using. Hmmmmmmm......
I think I jumped the gun a bit on rooting my I9505G right when I got it. I've never successfully rooted it, but I managed to get on the 4.3 ROM with a few quirks here and there. My ultimate goal is to get Paranoid Android with halo running, but I'll have to dedicate a day to the whole process. I'll be keeping track of this thread.

I haven't used Cygwin before. I'll take a look at it today.
Also going to mess around with TW a little more. Maybe we just need some libs from the stock 9505g rom or something.
Update: I'm afraid I may have mislead you earlier. It appears that you need more than just the updated update-script in order to get touchwiz to boot. You also need a kernel from one of the 4.3 leaks. Here's the one I've been using. (Attached) Not only does it boot, but the soft keys work and you can hear the sound effects of the lock screen. I'm very close.

Wow Illogic your close bro thanks for your hard work the libs does sound like it would cause the display problem I'm gonna play around with this too. All I did was unpack stock 4.3 and zip and deo the files with root. The problem I am having is that I am still learning U-scripts and so I cannot get anything to flash. I get failed on 0p21 even though its changed. Maybe I can pm you what I did later and get your feedback cuz your miles ahead of me
Sent from my GT-I9505G using Tapatalk 2
I've merged libs from the leaked 4.3 build into the TW ROM without overwriting anything. Didn't seem to change anything. At this point, I'm playing with magic I don't understand so not sure how much farther I'm going to get.
Would really like figure out which files in the system are responsible for the display. Perhaps we need to overwrite those files. Google is failing me so far.
---------- Post added at 04:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:29 PM ----------
Tada! :victory:
The error message goes away. Right now, the web browser force closes... that might be because of the ROM I was modifying. What I did was use the 4.2.2 kernel that shipped with the google play phones. That booted AND activated the display.
