So I returned to stock using the .tot file but my phone still contains /system/xbin, shouldn't that be removed when on stock? Before I flashed the .tot I unrooted/stock recovery with mt's tool.
The /xbin also contains a busy box file. How can I remove this folder, do I have to reroot and delete it the unroot again?
Thanks!

I could be wrong but when you flash a .tot file I don't think you have to unroot or anything first. Just flashing the .tot gets rid of all that stuff. Weird that the xbin folder is still there though.

Does anyone know the original purpose of the /system/xbin directory? Seems to be a "standard" Android location now,
but I'm curious what the origin of that directory is.

I was trying to get my tab back to stock after messing it up. I was following the instructions off of gizmoninja but it says I have to download and install their wpa_supplicant file so I can flash the update.zip file. I am on DJ11 now. The link is bad that he posted. Does anyone know where to get this file from. This is my second day of searching. Thanks.

I got the same problem, someone please help us with a original wpa_supplicant
why would you want to return to stock if your problem is wpa_supplicant? what has wpa_supplicant got to do with returning to stock?
When I return to stock dj11, the uodate to ec02 fails every time. The intructions I found said that it was a problem with the wpa_supplicant and it said to replace the file so the update would work. The link to the file does not work. Thats why we need it I suppose. Or, is there a better way to fix this?

yes,the modified wpa_supplicant can't pass the update verify.
and hi tombepa, what baseband you're using?could you backup a copy of baseband and upload it here?i flash sprint baseband on mine ,and can't get it back, thanks.
Now I understand- you are on verizon gt .....sorry....
I am on S:I800.0.3V.DL21
And if someone can give instructions on how to back it up I would be glad to.

I made a promise to myself to only lurk here from now on but I can't keep quiet for this one. First, I'm on my tab so I can't upload. Second, I'm sprint so I'm not sure which original wpa you people are asking g for. Third, when you put the modified file into the folder you are told to (did you remember to turn off wifi?), just rename the end of the original file .old or .bak or whatever (after telling file explorer program to go into rw mode of course), so the os won't run it and then just copy the modified file into that folder. Fourth, put the folder back into ro mode and reboot. I used to delete or overwrite files before but decided tacking .old at the end of the filename (works good for stock apks that you want to trial and error disable while testing for fc and stability when trying to lean down the programs loading). It's been much easier putting things back the way they were originally when I do it this way than ripping them out or overwriting them. Deleting or overwriting existing files and not having the original close by can many times come back and bite you in the ass. Flashing back to stock is a time consuming task that gets old really quick when you can't get whatever back into working condition.
Backing up is so simple. Just rename the original file to wpa_supplicant.old and copy over the modified one and reboot. Done. Want to revert? Do the opposite. Delete the modified file and rename the wpa_supplicant.old file to wpa_supplicant and reboot.

Adb wasn't necessary for me. I got the file out of the 7zip and copied to the folder with root explorer. So easy even a caveman could do it.

I use the same file as shown by oscarthegrouch for sprint SPH-P100 and the file works fine,
but I can not be sure if used in Verizon tab
hopefully can help

hey guys, before submitting a bug to Hash i wanted to ask here if anyone tested this yet and made the same experience as i did: SafeStrap 1.08 is not fully compatible with the XT883.
Backups are not working because \system can't be mounted.
anyone can confirm this?
It's a known issue. If you're feeling brave, you can try my modified (and slightly older, now) version of SafeStrap that'll nandroid backup my ME863, and will probably nandroid backup your XT883 as well.

So, I was trying to swap out my 2nd-init.zip recovery file with the one from the thread you posted. I'm trying to use file browsers to move the altered 2nd-init.zip file into /etc/safestrap and it won't work no matter the app I use. Is there a particular app/method I should be using here for this last step?
Thanks. Forgive the noob.

you need to place the recovery file into the original 2nd-init.zip. backup the original file and check the permissions of the new file. you need to do this after succesful installation of the recovery of course

I copied the 2nd-init.zip to my computer and unzipped it just fine. I put the tweaked recovery file in the folder and rezipped it. I just can't get it back into the /etc/Safestrap folder because root browser says it failed. I checked permissions on every folder in the path (including /system) and user has write permissions on each one, so I don't see how that could be a problem. I'm not allowed, for some reason, to make any changes to /etc/Safestrap except I can extract the 2nd-init.zip to my SD card, which is how I got the copy I tweaked and am now trying to replace back on the device.
If anyone can tell me what they did to put the tweaked 2nd-init.zip back into /etc/Safestrap, that would be helpful.
Thanks.

Well, just tried it using Root Browser and Script Manager, both of which I find to be very capable file browsers, and it didn't work. It's just not letting me make any changes to the folder /etc/Safestrap. It allowed me to extract the 2nd-init.zip out of that folder, but won't allow me to zip or unzip anything into it. I'll keep playing with it and update if anything changes.
Otherwise, I'll just wait till I no longer need the xt883 radio.img to back up and flash ROMs.

Ok, so I got Root Browser to move the original 2nd-init.zip to my sd card and placed the tweaked one in /system/etc/Safestrap successfully, but then Safestrap wouldn't get past the splash screen. I swapped back to the original one and it still wouldn't boot into recovery. Just the splash screen with option to start system or press menu button to go into recovery. I pressed menu and the screen stayed black both times.
Oh well, I'm not in a hurry to flash ROMs or get a backup, so I uninstalled Safestrap for now and will try again when I no longer need the xt883 radio.img.

get a root file browser and mount system r/w then it should let you. i personally use es file explorer and enable root settings
This is the .cfg file of the 4.3 OTA for the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active (i537) from AT&T on 1/14/14 for those who are unable to receive OTA because they are not on MF3. (The file doesn't download as a zip via OTA)
Using this on another device would likely cause problems so I wouldn't suggest it.
Also, I did not update because I want to keep root.
Instructions:
1) Download the .cfg file (links below)
2) Copy it over to your phone's internal storage
3) Using a root manager app like 'ES File Manager' or 'Root Browser', copy the .cfg file from internal storage to /data/fota
4) Make sure you have KNOXAgent.apk and wssyncmldm.apk in /system/app for this to take place. A lot of people either changed the name, deleted, or moved the apk for rooted purposes.
**If you replaced Knox and wssync, you MUST reboot for effects to take place since the odex tells the apk what to do on boot**<<
5) Go to Settings>More>About Device>Software Updates>Continue Update
OR the method below which worked for some people (I can't confirm this works or not)
1) Download .cfg file (links below)
2) Change file to a .zip
3) Copy to phone's external storage (the internal will get wiped)
4) Flash via regular recovery
MD5 for .cfg file: F43D00ABDC4FE4D5BFB305CC6598FEB3
If you run into any problems, I won't be much help since I'm not a dev.
REMEMBER! You will lose root with the update. Don't say you didn't know because the warning is here<<<<

Would it be possible to get some help getting some stock files from the /system/app folder? I modded/removed a few of the stock apps and seem to have lost a big chunk of my original backups. I believe these apps are why the update fails for me as the updater script checks a bunch of the files SHA1 checksums. Seeing as on my phone these apps are missing or modded I figured if I could acquire the stock copies it may finally work.

You can't just uninstall. Those files from the zip overwrited files from your system. To get back you can use nandroid backup, if you nade it before. Also you can see what files are inside that zip (in folder system/app or system/framework) and replace them from your previous one. If you are on some ROM, you could just reflash it without wipes.
