I've been toying with the idea of buying a Nexus One for some time now, I'm no stranger to Android, having owned a Droid 2, Droid Incredible, and now a Samsung Captivate that I use with work. I currently also have an iPhone 4 as my personal phone, and I was just given an HTC Surround and Samsung Focus to replace the Captivate with, so I have to decide which I like more. I love Android, I've always been more drawn to it than my iOS devices, although I do love my iPhone. Now that the Nexus One has been out for a year and has its "successor" (depending on who you ask), is it a good buy still? I'm tired of waiting for AT&T to come out with something new that's a real killer phone, I've been hearing whispers of the HTC Desire HD being in testing, and the Moto Olympus being announced at CES. I'd get a Nexus S if I had T-Mobile and it had a microSD slot, but other than a larger screen and NFC capability, I don't see any real upgrade the S brings. What does everyone think, if I get this Nexus One is it a great buy and I'll enjoy it for awhile, or should I save my money and just wait longer?
PS, I know I own too many phones I can't help it! 3 phone lines will do that to ya
I barely got my nexus one so I would give you my own personal feedback.
Cons:
1.battery is some what horrible under medium to heavy use you can always tweak the phone to make last longer but sometimes is a pain in the butt.
2. 512mb of storage is a step back having to always watch what you installed, once again you can tweak it and make it less of an issue.
3. touch screen feedback is not the best like other phones that are out there. also having some multitouch issues on all models but I hardly notice the issue.
4. My personal issue not having a call and end keys is a pain but that just me been picky.
5. another personal opinion camera its not the greatest in my opinion.
Pros:
1. I got the phone for 295 under no contract that's a awesome deal I think.
2. will get gingerbread soon.
3. Having stock android makes things so much better I could of bought many android phones but the lack of updates made think twice of spending 300 plus.
4 this is a big one for me having to tether and having hotspot internet without rooting makes me so happy.
5. Adobe flash I love having flash for the same reason I didn't buy the nokia n8.
I know for a fact next year will be a big year for android if you wanna wait.
I have my nexus a year now, bought it when it just came out. I can agree with josemedina1983. Nexus is mine longest phone because it never got bored, there is always something new to find out, and google bringing the always the new android version makes the N1 up to date. All the new HTC phones are almost like the Nexus, some have more space to install apps on but that's it.
The only thing that bothers me a bit is the touch screen, it works great with apps but soon as you want to play games that require multi touch it's a nightmare.
I like mine N1 it has a great design works great love the trackball (miss it on new models) the dock station is great. i think i wil keep using mine N1 till something really great comes (didn't find a phone to replace it). I don't like the looks of the Nexus s it really feels cheap.
I think N1 is still a good it has it's flaws specially if you want to play games on it.
I've had my N1 for a few months, here's my take:
OS: Froyo with eventual Gingerbread
- Huge community support on the current OS with 'in-view' plans for OTA update to latest OS.
- Lots and lots of ROMs for this puppy, you can hack this baby four ways from Friday.
- Rumors that Gingerbread on latest Nexus S still a little green - will hopefully be ripe when it gets to N1
Phone cons:
- POS multitouch support (doesn't mean it's not responsive to single thumb touch).
- only 512MB of internal memory (but you can root and get Apps2SD to make up for that) [on a side note, isn't 16GB of internal memory on the Nexus S enough!?!]
- Bad design on the power button, will most likely fail after a few months if the design hasn't been fixed (see link in my signature)
- No Gyroscope - but it's not like you don't have other phones to play games on
- No NFC - but how soon are people going to start using that anways?
Phone Pros:
- Been around for a while, huge support community (XDA FTW!).
- Lots of hacks and tweaks for the phone as well.
- Anything wrong with the phone has already been discovered.
- Lots of developers have it, but you don't see it out in the wild that much (unique 'special' factor).
- Still a high end processor for the next few months until the Tegra 2s come out.
- Probably get it cheaper now that the Nexus S is out.
If you can get it cheap without a contract then sure its still a good phone.
But I would not pay full price for it or go on a contract in order to get it at this point.
Its not a bad phone at all but the phone market moves soooo fast its blinding.
I'll be keeping mine another year and then getting whatever is newest once my contract is up.
All really good advice, I feel like I'm still getting a phone that's relevant in today's market, but at the same time I know that something else is going to come soon and just put it to shame. I would like to know what's wrong with the N1's multitouch, is it just unresponsive or does it really not work? It's taken me quite some time to track down one that's sub $500 with the AT&T 3G bands, so I'm weighing the options very carefully here. After playing around with the Nexus S for some time a few days ago, I personally didn't find anything on Gingerbread that really stood out to me from Froyo, and I have it running on my Incredible now. It would be really nice to get something that was completely free of any carrier or manufactor influence as far as updates go, and easily hacking other roms onto this thing seems to be really easy. The power button issue I've heard about from other people, but some say it's not too hard to fix, so that isn't too bad for me. Decisions, decisions.
Just get the S
If you own another android phone and still using it i dont see the point of buying another one especially having the incredible its a damn good phone I think the incredible,evo,nexus,hd2,droid x,g2 are the classic android phones of 2010. I would wait alittle bit and stack up those 300 for the next phone. I feel next year windows 7 nokias meego and android tablets i love having alot of OS options.

I have had my Nexus One 6 months and think it is a great phone. IMO one of the best looking phones made. I also have a Desire as my main phone and have used the Nexus to learn about rooting and custom roms. Its copped a hammering from experimenting but it has always come back to life. Google is defiantly your friend here LOL. If you have the spare $ and not to concerned with whats around the corner with the next gen Android its a good buy. But maybe that its 12 months since release a more current phone may be better. Try Nexus S. When it arrives in Australia I surely will get one. Good luck with your decision.
Steve.
It's a good phone, but I wouldn't buy it now after a year it came out, unless you get it really cheap. With CES happening right now, you should definitely wait and see.
If I need to recommend a phone I would still recommend the N1 provided its cheaper than the NS
Definitely a phone worth getting, more ROMS then you'll ever know what to do with. I've been back and forth between MIUI, cyanogen and enomthers ROMS and have never been.disappointed. battery life is amazing with these ROMS. My nexus at 1.113 Ghz outperformed my friends droid X at 1.465 Ghz and his rooted Evo

Its not the best but the biggest problem I have is axis flipping and the snapping to match the axis of the other finger (Don't know what that's called officially). It's not the best video and neither of these problems really bother me in day to day use. I vote it's a great phone to own and will be for a few years yet. As for the power button i've had mine since last march and still no issues.
I still think you should wait the nexus one AT&T version are pretty rare and they still go for around 50 + bucks, more than the t-mo version.
Comes this february then I officially own a phone that lasts for a year. Lol I used to change phones a lot. I just tried to find the perfect one for me. pam there it is

Amazon.com deal on N1 too good to be true?
Been a long time follower of this forum but only just registered.
Looking to buy a Nexus one. It's going at $298 on Amazon from one of their eSellers. It is listed as new but most of the feedback on this seller refers to refurbished products - and sometimes when the buyer was expecting a new one. So I am really sceptical though it is very tempting to be able to get the phone for <$300.
Anyone here Ble to advise? Any better ideas on where I could look?
There are a lot of killer phones out there but....I like having one of the only phones that has Gingerbread without rooting (2.3.4). Exclusivity; I haven't seen one in the wild. Hotspot and tehering without rooting. Vanilla Android. While the touchscreen is buggy at times, I love my N1. I have had it for a year and never regretted my purchase. This is one of the phones that will be remembered for quite sometime IMO. A classic, as it were.
Long story short, I can upgrade my phone every 8-12 months for the subsidized price. I bought my captivate when it came out, and im up for another upgrade if I want.
I've been waiting for the next really good android phone for ATT, and this looks like the one to get.
My only worry is if its not that huge of an upgrade over my captivate, and if I should just wait a few more months (maybe 6)
Also will the Atrix have a following as large as the captivates on XDA.
If it doesn't bother you that it can't upload worth a damn (no hsupa, recently revealed), and if you're itching to buy a phone now even though att could be getting more good ones within an unknown but potentially tolerable amount of time...
whatever you do, contract time is google voice porting time. Don't drop that ball.
Wait to see what developers cook up in the atrix forums.
Holding out for the Nexus S if you're a Google fanatic, could show up soon, made it through the fcc for att recently.
I agree with xdahgary, wait to see what the devs can do with the atrix. the reason i got into android was for the great community but if motorola takes the community out of the equation then it isn't worth it to me.
Yea I'd probably wait to see what the devs can do to the atrix ... I'm debating whether to get the atrix or nexus s.... any idea when the nexus s will be release for att??

If available money was of no concern,
I'd go to best buy and get the unlocked NS without the bloat. No contract, can take it to T-Mo if I don't like what ATT is doing with their plan offerings.

If what I'm reading is correct, you're likely to never have custom kernels with the Atrix.
The Captivate would be a pile of **** without custom kernels. Voodoo sound, voodoo lag fix, voodoo color, overclock, undervolt, embedded cwm recovery, etc.
Sent from my Captivate.
+1 on the wait to see what happens with the atrix. motorola builds a decent piece of hardware and with it's shear processing power it cant be slow and the huge battery is either a sign that battery life wont suffer or that running two cores makes it a serious battery sucker.
if you think you can ever be satisfied with a stock phone then sure get the atrix but for many of us the tinkering is an addiction so if that's the case with you i'd wait to see what the developers create for it. samsung makes it too easy to flash. im personally waiting to see the infuse but if it turns out to be single core and has the same graphics chip ill wait till my contract is up to upgrade. if htc could make the desire hd/inspire thinner like a galaxy s i'd get that even though it's not exactly ground breaking at this point in time.

Substitute all that last part with "fixes from private forum developers" and you could say that with just about any phone released in the past 8 years...

looks like the infuse falls under the galaxy s 2 and is not just a slightly tweaked galaxy s. definately getting it. too many features line up for it not to be a galaxy s 2 even though only the clock speed was anounced i am now nearly certain that the infuse is infact dual core. good stuff

previous post changed, im horrible with time... I agree Motorola has fallen off... and if it werent for them adopting and coddling android they would have fallen off even worse... but the old samsungs were pretty terrible... bad os, hard to unlock, hardware problems... they were too focused on tv's maybe... motorola and nokia used to rule the cell world... now they suck... only htc has been strong enough to develop top handsets their entire existence... and quite hackable... i never thought once id own a samsung, but they have come around... tv's too... can't count out the rest though, once you think someone's down, they get back up...
Honestly Motorolla phones as I've noticed tend to be quite laggy, maybe the Atrix will be the one to break that trend with the dual-core proccessor but then again wouldn't a samsung dual-core be even less laggy? The captivate still has some time before it falls below top-tier (with custom ROMs that is) Stick it out, By the end of the year I've heard rumors of quad-core... here's to hoping

Thinking of selling this one before the price drops more.
But what would be a good replacement ?
I was thinking just the same, I'm planning on getting a SGS 2 when it comes out.
Other nice options are the Nexus S, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G..
also thinking of the SGS 2 but might be too costly for me and is there a release date yet ?

Sell it if you really want the latest device. If you're just selling it because its going to lose value I wouldn't bother because that next latest device is going to lose value just as quick.
I'm happy with my Galaxy S. I will sell it when it apps start requiring more advanced hardware.. but I think that's a while off.
I wouldn't, considering the cost, trade it for anything on the market right now.
The Atrix has its own bugs, multi-touch wonky and HSUPA AWOL, and little hope of fixes with locked bootloader (and if any it will be on 'carrier time' of months). Also it's pentile and I'm not going down that road again.
Inspire? Yawwn..single-core snapdragon hardly an upgrade.
Other dual-core out is LG Optimus 2x. Don't know, maybe LG can deliver here (ie. unlocked bootloader and quality subsysems) but 800x480 LCD is likely going to seem plain after SAMOLED...
To me its SGS2 or bust, it will be interesting to see when it comes out if Samsung has learned some lessons from SGS1.
The key will be minimizing flaws. Accurate GPS. Snappy performance (apparently movinand more to blame for this than RFS so RFS isn't the death knell). No other big screw-ups. (I won't say battery life because although they can make some headway here, there will somehow always be people who can kill it in 12 hours with 'moderate' usage. I could only kill my SGS in a day when I played for hours on end.)
If it is really amazing, I'd grab it and keep the SGS as a backup. Otherwise I have no issue holding on until next spring/summer.
The Galaxy S phones (or all top tier phones right now) won't be obsolete or get to the point where we are complaining about speed until the end of this year, if thhat.
It also mainly depends on what you're going to be doing on the phone. If you do a lot of browsing, twitter, fb, YouTube and video watching, you should t hhave to upgrade till the end of this year at the earliest.
However as dual core phones become more popular (latter end of the year) more and more applications will be developed for a faster, more powerful phone.

Technology will never stop. When you'll buy SGS2 there will be SGS3, 4.... on the way. Never look at what others have or what's coming in the market. If you're satisfied with your device and its not giving you any troubles then it is just a waste of time & money to look for another thing. Why bother when you even don't need something better? SGS i9000 is almost a perfect smart phone. Be happy with it
Ah i would only Sell My Galaxy S if i need to buy S2 and only if i really have to use NFC..But being in INDIA i think it will be ages b4 NFC comes here . So No point selling .
My other suggestion would be HTC Desire S(just love the sense ui+this one has FF camera)..

i'm thinking of keeping the i9000 because the SGS 2 it's not that advanced yes the 1 gig of ram looks good and that huge super screen but the gpu is not that big deal it's just slightly better than the i9000 an the same with the Optimus 2x even with that Tegra gpu THX to our awesome developers the galaxy s is twice as good then the stock ones i'll only replace it if i break the screen or something like that
LONG LIVE THE --- I9000 ---
i think end of 2011 middle 2012 phones will have this "Kal-El" AKA SUPERMAN GPU ( hahahahah)

Currently i am nearly happy with my SGS after replacing original kernel with speedmod k13c, using ext4 lagfix, replacing homescreen with GO Launcher EX, adding GPS Aids to get better GPS fix. Only miss HID Bluetooth support.
Removed nearly all pre-installed software, Samsung is not good at software development i think. The screen is awesome (use Samsung monitors for years as well).
I hope for a perfect combination of features in a phone 2012 - the super phone will never be super for long
Cheers

Hey everyone
My Desire just died last night :-/
And I need a new phone... My question is just:
Should I buy a optimus 2x or find something else in the same price range ??
I have never used an android phone for very long with the original rom.. if it changes anything here...
I ask mostly because when the 2x cam to market, there was a lot of talk about that the phone was a piece of...crap....
is it any better now ?
Best regards

Nope and it will never be...HW is solid, and SW will put it to the drain. Just wait for Nexus and you're all good
buy it i never had one problem only the stock rom is a little slow but if you put a custom rom an it, then it will be fast
If price is right i don't see any reason why not to buy o2x. I got mine from local shop for 200€

But I think I'd say.....
If you plan to root and install a custom then yes it's a good phone. (though make sure that if you get a BSOD you get the handset replaced asap).
The custom GB roms out for this phone make it a solid handset.
Though, after the announcement that the Nexus S will receive ICS, perhaps that's a better handset to purchase?
Hardware is awesome, no doubt about that.
Just one thing I dislike about this phone. LG came out with a half-finished OS, and very slow on updates.
Don't think I'll buy a phone from LG again.
I'd personally go for Samsung G II, Galaxy Nexus or Motorola RAZR (if you can get your hands on it)
i just bought this phone a couple of weeks ago, at a very cheap price as well.
But yes, as stated the hardware is quite something and the software is ehh...
So if you dont feel like installing custom roms and would like ice cream sandwich in a couple go the nexus s, it would be your best bet
but on the other hand, you would admire your O2x with the installation of custom roms.
i know i did.
Dont buy it bro!, hardware is good but if you want to prove the newst software you have to stay behind the scenes!! ----) CM7 - toogigi , modaco, and other custom rooms, on the other hand nvidia dont release its code, so that complicate thins, if I dont see progress I will sell my phone and go for something next year!

not to buy, i think, or it wil take time to wait for update or return to factory to repair.
It is a good buy.
dont buy. Its a piece of ****. Hardware is pretty good but thats it. Software sucks.
I have this and I can get the Nexus S for same price. Only reason I chose this is for the sd card slot. If you don't need an SD card slot get a Nexus instead. After all the Nexus is how its supposed to be, not these manufacturer tainted versions. If all androids were like the nexus in the first place then very few people would have bothered to develop custom roms for it.
In the end you need to pick which camp you want to be in, the nexus camp with smooth sailing or the lg with false update promises and roms that work better on g2x than on o2x.
My friend got a white SGS2 recently and that phone is beautiful. Despite its large screen that phone actually fits in my hand when I sms and doesnt feel like I'm not having a proper grip. Its super thin and super light and truly sexy.
Don't ever buy an LG device.
Yes and No
As standard, I was ready to smash this phone. it was Laggy, overheated, crashed, rumoured Updates never arrived. I'd had enough.
Then I put Topogigi v2.0 on it. It's like having a completely different phone. Smoother, Faster
The Neoblaze Kernel lets you overclock to 1.4Ghz.
I'm finally liking this phone again
Should I upgrade to the captivate? It's between it, the Infuse, Thrill, Pantech Burst, or the Atrix? All these phones seem vastly better in specs but, the captivate has a pretty awesome looking stable ICS port and it's really apealing to me. I just don't know which phone to have for the next 2 years
They are all pretty outdated by now..I would wait if I were you for the sgsIII
I really do want the galaxy s2 but it's out of budget..
Captivate is a really great phone. Infuse is a captivate with a bigger screen and better rear shooter and a front shooter. The dev on it was crap few months back, so you will need to check. Atrix is a dual core, but I've never used it neither the pantec or the thrill.
My opinion (between Captivate and Infuse) If you like the size of the screen and don't mind less choices on ROMs and mods Infuse is nice. I wouldn't trade it for my cappy. Running incredible stable ICS and the Infuse feels huge (big bezel) for me.

lmao...wait for the gs3, really? It's freaking JANUARY and the 3 isn't even close to being out in Europe, which gets new phones 6 MONTHS BEFORE the u.s. That is like a year wait...
Op i would go with the infuse. Dev is picking up some, the collective has a dev on that device.
LG makes crap phones, and SCREW MOTOROLA i don't suggest anyone give them money. Freedom robbing bootloader locking jerks.
Not sure if you're going with ATT or not. But I was browsing their phones online today and they had the Captivate for $.01, or, a refurbed GSII for $10.00. I've noticed that refurb pop up a few times in the past few weeks. I don't know how many they have, but they aren't always available.
If you're patient and going with AT&T, I would just watch their website daily and see what pops up.
No mention of the Inspire? Its not dual core, but its still a good phone. The burst is is basically a mildly updated captivate. What i would say is check Craigslist for used phones. You pay a little more, but your not under contract and you don't obligate yourself for 2 years.

I know how you can have a SGSII on ATT. They have them on the website right now (refurbished but with warranty) with a new 2 year contract for $9.99.
