Hi there,
I bought a Captivate i896 2nd hand from someone knowing that there were some software issues. Stupid me didn't check te water sticker because the phone was/is in immaculate condition... Good thing it was only $70, my over self-confidence screwed me in the end.
The sticker beside the 3 golden pins is red (not all of it) but the phone turns on and gets passed the boot sequence then stops at a blank black screen.
I've tried using Odin to reflash to stock with no luck, I still get the same issue. Boot past boot sequence then halt at blank black screen. The buttons still light up and are responsive, even though nothing is displayed on the screen.
What on earth should I do and how am I to tell what piece has water damage if any.
Thanks

I have been given a captivate from a friend who said he dropped it in the toilet, it turned off when he grabbed it.
He said he stuck it in a bowl of rice over night after removing the battery.
First thing i did was wipe it, odin came back a full success no errors.
When i boot it i see the at&t thing & the little 3g fly by, but the screen is all cloudy. Once its booted up i see the screen locked deal and i can swipe it to unlock and and even change the pages. After a few seconds i will notice the screen starting to fade to black, all this time still being cloudy. If i manually turn the screen off with the power button for a couple minutes, i am able to turn it back on and see the cloudy screen again.
My questions are these.
Seems to me the LCD is messed up, Can i just replace the LCD?
How do i know if anything else is damaged?
Ive read about the battery indicators, both of which are still white.
ive already taken it apart , "comfortable when its a free phone", and notice a slight burn mark from a resistor on the LCD to the metal shielding that it is pressed up against.
Any ideas would be helpful.

To test whether all the sensors, vibration, touch screen, LED colors, magnetic sensors works properly, install and use SGS Tools..
There are lot of tests and testing modes available there.. hope this helps
So i was walking home from a party in the rain and i got pretty soaked but i dont think the phone got that wet. Ive had the phone in a cup of dry rice for a few days to try and pull all the water out from the inside.
Now the phone wont boot or stay in download mode.
As soon as i put the battery in it boots, no pushing of the power button. The black and white "samsung galaxy s" comes up for a few seconds then the phone restarts. It never gets further than the first boot screen.
I can enter download mode but it only stays there for a ~5 seconds before restarting. I've tried reflashing the kernel and bootloaders (dangerous i know) in this short window but it hasnt helped, despite the flashing succeeding.
I was running MIUI
Turning it on was a bad idea.
Okay so go get yourself a Philips scree driver and opening tool( normal dinner knife will do)
Take off battery cover
Take out battery,sim card,SD card.
Unscrew the 7 small screws on the back.
Pull back plate off ( use opening tool to slip between bezel and back plate.
Once this is off check the 3 flex connectors on the board.
One on top for audio
One on left for display
One on bottom for buttons.
Make sure no signs of liquid.
Also a good plan pop down to your local tech store and get some ipa and pour that all over the board to remove any excess crap.
Rebuild and pray. Or if blackpool area pop and see me. On.phone so can't see location.
Sent from my phone
In my case long washing mainboard in isopropanol helped (gt s8530 threw into deep water for few seconds), altough got still problems with microphone circuits, gonna give it a try with ultrasonic bathing. It may be horrifying to think about diving mainboard of phone to liquid, but if it is pure iso it wont damage anything (onboard, it will most likely wash off all labels, ink printed texts, and glue)
So my Screen broke and I bought a new one so I could replace it, the touch screen/digitizer didn't break though... at first the colors just started washing and fading untill the screen ended up completely dark, I could still use the touch screen and feel when I would unlock it, after a day the phone would not give me any feed back by vibrating or turning the orange light while charging, so I dismantled it using some tips from these videos:

After I put everything back together the phone is giving me feedback again and I can notice its charging because of the orange light, but the screen won't turn on. Does any one know if I might need to do something on the software side? like needing to re install anything? or do you think I just got a bad screen?
Update: I just took it apart again and reconnected the ribbons, its back together and the screen still won't turn on.
You have the AMOLED screen and not the LCD?
Did you compare the #'s on the old and new to see you got the right part?
Cables are the same, they look the same, part # and stickers are different...
What are the part numbers on your new and old screen? I just went through the same thing, but I'm fairly sure I got the wrong screen replacement. Will have to look more into it later tonight.
My screen wont turn on at all. I was so excited to get my N1 back in action as well.
Hello,
I have sent my gnexus off to be repaired this week and recently started to use my old milestone until my other phone is repaired. Phone was working fine, a little slow to my nexus but it was better than nothing. I was checking my emails and stuck my phone in my pocket to cross the street, when I pulled it out again, the screen would light up (glow) but the screen was black, I tried pulling the battery and rebooting but to no avail. I can feel the phone vibrate when I slide my finger across to unlock it and tap icons, but nothing is being displayed. I'm wondering if anybody else has had something like this happen and if it is possible to fix relatively easily?
If you don't get anything on the screen anymore I'm afraid it's a hardware failure.
Maybe the connector cable is broken (partially), I guess...
I guess Eiertschik is right.
In the boot process, does the M logo show up?
Hi all i recently had a galaxy A40 from a customer that needed a replacement screen after being drooped down the toilet i told her not to bother as water damaged dut she needed some info off the phone.
I replaced the screen but had heat sensor issue so i replaced the power inlet board and it worked for a couple days when i gave it back to her.
Now all i am getting is the android logo screen at the start and nothing else and it remains on the screen i cant enter any of the boot options to hard reset or download mode etc.
I think its proberbly knackerd now if any one has any idea it would be apriciated thanks mark
