[Q] Questions About ROMs & Kernels.. - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My father has a Galaxy Note. I wanted to install the best ROM (Prefer Light/Lite size) with best Kernel which would give a Good battery life. Any advice ???
I've installed Chrack's Lite LC1 ROM (from here) Which has Franco kernel 9. But, having a few problems. Can't change Voltages for CPU (Using Voltage Control & SetCPU), The options are missing or Disabled. Having FCs while calling someone using phone dialer ("com.android.phone" FC), Network goes down & comes back later. Any way to fix these ???
Thanks...

It's all about cassie x with Franco test build . MAGIC.

Nobody can say the best rom because everything is best and it completely depends on the user what they like. For example I like darky rom very much and others may dislike it.
Maybe the OC/UV feature is not included in the kernel and there is no need for it because already the note is super snappy. The phone problem maybe due to improper flashing.Try factory reset or flash the rom again. If the problem persist report it on the rom's thread and the dev might try to solve it.

Darky roms are always super snappy and are known for better battery life.My sgs, sgsII and note all runs on darky rom only.If you want a basic install without any themes and only major tweaks go for base roms and if you need pre-themed and fully tweaked go for full rom.I'm sure you will enjoy the rom

[Q] Tired of looking for fixes for bugs, please suggest best rom and kernel for SGS

Iam tired of looking for fixes , every rom has very bad bugs, miui was the best for smoothnes , but i can't use it with that strong power hog , i can barley make 5 hours screen time with Automatic brightness and no Apps running in background , also the sound quality of speakers are very low
Can you please recommend me the fastest / snappiest , smoothest ROM and kernel for Galaxy S ??? iam now on Miui 1.9.9 , glitch kernel V11 , iam not satisfied at all
i miss tons of calls and i can't hear it ring in my pocket lol ! very very power hungry rom

I'm afraid that you could not find an answer for that question , cause i also tried asking the same question and ended up at Jetpack ROM+Sempahore, but you yourself have to try !!
Human's are weird beings, so go ahead an try the rom's,kernels that meet your prerequisites !!
Hope that was helpful!
Yeah, just try several differnet roms and kernels and decide which you like best. I suggest using something based on stock Samsung rom like JVR. IMHO right now roms based on 2.3.4 JVR are smoother and more stable than MIUI and CM7. I for one haven't had any issues with the battery for quite some time
Want something simple , Fast, Bug free, ?
Romkitchen.org Got my misses SGS running GB 2.3.4 JVR.. rooted, de-odexed, with Speedmod kernel.
its great.
Im also a MIUI User, some things BUG me, but i cant tear myself from it, I love the customisation.
Got final hybrid rom with latest talon kernel and acid tweaks getting 3200 in qaudrant !
i am just wondering is it worth going to jvs from jvr ?

tornado is great, but sometimes give me reboot suddenly, it's fast, but not stable for me!! maybe for others, just not me

Thanks for the replies every one , can any one lead me to the Tornado rom thread ? i can't seem to find it or Jetpack rom , or any ROM source ??? i would like a thread that contains a list of ROMS that i can try them out
lets say i have got a stable rom , what tweaks should i be start doing ?? like lag fixes and stuff

Which ROM?
I suggest you to get a ODEXed ROM, as it runs smoother. Most deodexed ROMs I tried get slower from time to time. Deodexing is only good for theming, but I recommend you stock theme as it is the most clean. So to have less problems (RAM scripts and tweaks often cause instability) I recommend you to get Stock JVR, semaphore Kernel and if you need some extras from custom ROMS get "Stock +" Mod from $omator. JVS seems to have problems with Wifi and DHCP, so JVR is the better choice for the moment.
If stock ROM is looking to boring for you, you can also get Simplicity which is also very performant and has a great addon creator for theming and additional system apps.
I am now running on Tornado, stability, speed and battery are good, but some apps like calculator and calendar have been stripped, Kernel is running peaks up to 1440 Mhz and it is also not supported here.
So the conclusion for your questions answer would be:
1. Stock JVR ROM with Semaphore and Stock+ 1.5 odexed
2. Simplicity 0.40

[Q] CheckRom V6 & What kernel?

Guys what it the best kernel for checkrom V6?
I mean.. i want advices BUT why did you made such a choice?
For me it is Franco hands down. Tested v2, v6 and the latest 'test' one (this will become v10 tomorrow or the day after, judging by the users' comments), and all proved to be smooth, fast, stable and easy on the battery on my Note.
I would second Franco kernel also. Been using it since v6 had no problems with lag at all. Battery life with this combination seems good as well.
Now this is a good start
I have been in CF ROOT for XXLC1 but i dunno why i feel the stock kernel is a little bit lagged in menus!
Will try Franco Kernel
Thanks for your replys!

Franco 9.....pure awesomeness !! Best battery backup m getting by using it. Earlier tried Abyss 4.2 but got a high battery drain !
Go for Franco !!!
but doesn't changing the kernel change some supported features in the rom ? like ntfs support for instance ?

Yeah of course! I have it installed on my phone. just go to the inbuilt kitchen (update it to the latest version from google play store) and download the file given there under the themes section. Its version1.1 as of now. And install it in recovery !!
Cheers! Hit thanks if it helped!
I was using stock CF-Root and it was fine, but the battery drain was a bit higher vs V5 CheckROM. Installed Franco and its running great, 1.5% Per Hour idle.
was using checkrom v6 with Franco's test kernel. Seems like its draining battery more than stock. Gonna verify it over the nxt few days by using stock
Also on Franco test kernel.
Also on franco kernel v9, works like a charm. Good battery life but no as good as CheckROM v5 & franco v6
For me Franco kernel cause constant sods.

[Q] Best ICS ROM???

What is the best ice cream sandwich rom with/without best battery life ever created, modified or developed.

There is nothing called the best rom.It really depends on what features you want and with what rom you feel comfortable. As of now,you have the following options for safe ICS roms
1.CyanogenMod9
2.Asylum ICS
3.MiUi
4.ParanoidAndroid.
5.And other ASOP/AKOP roms build on cm9.
The roms other than above are built on lp1,lp5,lpy or lpf F/W which has the potential to brick your phone.

If you flash Kingdroid, would you lose any of the S-Pen functionality? I've heard it does :S
I am using Galaxy Note for a long time. I was always far to the custom roms since they have various bugs mostly. But after a long time I changed my mind when i see the Paranoid Android rom. It is really cool with its Tablet/Phone hybrid functions and views. I can easily say that it is really smoother then the official ICS roms. And the battery, performance, speed, stability etc everything is just fine.
Maybe you can give a shot on this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662802
by the way it is a CM9 based rom and it is safe to use (doesnt have the brick bug)

Using Kingdroid NoteMania v3 with Speedmod kernel #k3-3.
S-Pen works great and so does all S-Pen enhanced apps
Battery life is good. Single charge gets me through the day with Exchange push mail, Gmail, Skype and Plume running all the time
Speed is fast. Of course, after you flash Speedmod kernel, it takes some time to settle down. Initially it may lag but as you use it and it creates the dalvik cache, it gets faster
TouchWiz5 is better than TW4 though I use NovaLauncher. There is no lag in either but I like the clean look of Nova over TW
Replaced Samsung Email with AOSP Email client and Samsung Messaging with AOSP Messaging. Now all messaging apps look homogeneous (Gmail, Email and Messaging)
Do not use Live Wallpapers as it hogs battery. I use a plain black wallpaper with screen brightness at ~70%. Still battery gets me through the day
Go to task manager and clear RAM once a day. Close apps you are not going to use for sometime
Cheers

It's mainly up to you and your opinion what is better or not. I almost was fixing to say CM9, but read closely that you said GB roms. I'm not running GB anymore so I don't really know much about all the new versions of the GB ROMs out now. It is safe on GB so just try out different ROMs until you find one you like.
The franco kernel for GB is not supported anymore because he is on ICS now so that stinks that you lost at least one GB kernel that I used to use and can say is very good on GB. Speedmod kernel is pretty good though.
Well, best is relative to experience. I was on LC1 with speedmod k2-12 and it served my purpose.

Well, i dont think there have a ROM that can name it as the best
Becoz all ROM are create for difference favour people
Example for me,i looking for a ROM with better battery life
And if for GB i prefer get Rocket ROM
So far , i use is ok for me ,only have a small bug with the kernal
Sometime will get SoD (Sleep of Time) but not long ,just around 20sec?
Other then that ,it is nice for me, especially battery life,it is quite a big improve
So if you asking my suggestion , i would prefer for Rocket rom
thankd for the info guys. rocket rom looks good. they type of rom/kernal id like is a light rom /w touchwiz no bloatware, fast, tweaked, good battery etc etc and kernal overclocked and fast also.
stock ROM maybe
For confused sorts and for those who want full functionality,I would recommend the stock ROM. If your much into tech info and can handle the tweaks then go for a custom ROM of your flavour.
I'm using KingDroid ICS NoteMania Edition v1.6 / franko.kernel for ICS r3, very smooth and stable with one *very annoying* bug, I can't change the lock screen's wallpaper.
I was running lp4 base-band, with Franco kernel on Checkrom...Quite decent, I would say.

Gingerbread or ICS Stock?

Good day everyone. I just want to ask you guys, especially those who are using stock roms, which do you prefer, stock ics or stock gb? I'm coming from PA by Utacka and I pretty much used custom roms from the start so i never actually used stock.
Please provide a reason as to why. I just want to have a stable rom while waiting for the official jelly bean update.
Thank you everyone.

there is no as such reasons to be on a particular ROM.. its each and everyones taste that keep them stuck to a particular rom,
as far as stock is concerned stock ICS rooted with a hydracore kernel works best for me
I would compare GB to windows XP. Sure it was good back in the day, but it's had it's run now and time to stay current. ICS has been released for a good while now and should have had all the bugs ironed out. Little things like the improved task switching (previews over icons), and swipe to dismiss notifications, while small differences make for a better experience over all.
A better kernal like hydracore to improve battery life and a stock ICS (or maybe back to rocketrom) would be what i would go back to if i was so inclined (i'm on utacka's PA at the moment too)

Thank you for the answer. My only intention is to have a pretty reliable phone so I can use my phone when it really counts. I hate that when I have to do something really important, I will encounter freezes or out of memory error that prevents me to actually multitask.
I haven't tried rocketrom but I am willing to try that. My only fear is if it will lag after few days of use. My boss' phone which is sgs2 would go for days or months without a reboot and he is on stock gb. He doesn't know anything about smartphones in general so he thinks he is using a regular phone, and he is pretty happy about the phone's performance. I just want the same experience.
Thank you.

ICS 4.0.4 without hesitation especially with interducing of safe kernel
Flash stock ICS 4.0.4 via PC Odin (the new one like xxlrt or ddlr9) then flash safe stock kernel like PhilZ kernel for your new rom from (also via odin or cwm): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
And thats it!! Full stock, very smooth (compared with older 4.0.4), and most important it is perfectly stable, and everything works.

Okay I'll look into that. Someone suggested about Rocketrom, do you think that Rocketrom could perhaps be more stable and faster than fully stock ( except kernel maybe) xxlrt or ddlr9, and do everything work on that? Files are too large for touchwiz roms so i want to know more about different types of rom before doing some flashing. I won't have so much time this coming months so I really want a reliable phone. Thanks a lot.

I dont want complaining on certain rom, but if you ask i will say my opinion on rocketrom. It is a good and stable rom, i have used it with hydracore kernel and dont find any problems with in about 2-3 weeks of use. But it is based on xxlrq which i found a bit laggy for me (the same story is for completly stock xxlrq). I dont know which is a difernce in xxlrq compared to xxlrt (some says the diference is only in kernel but i dont know).
So i was tired of flashing and stuff and decided to go on completly stock, picked up a latest xxlrt and whoaa, great. The reason why i am on lrt because my note is from german, i think that same story is for indian lr6 and lr9.
Then the story begins:
-Flashed stock GB xxlc1 via pc odin
-full wipe
-flash stock ics 4.0.4. xxlrt via pc odin
-root (dr.ketans guide) - only because of callrecord mod
-first flashed hydracore 4.3std kernel (also great kernel) and then philZ realesed his stock, emmc bug free kernel, so i flashed it.
Now used only a PhilZ kernel because it is completly stock with removed emmc brick bug. And for stock xxlrt rom it is perfect combination for me (just choose right kernel for your rom)
-Added only call recording mode
-settings > application > unninstalling aplications which i dont use ; > ALL > disabling (readers, music, social hub, etc...)
-And thats it!
Perfectly stable, smooth with great battery life, without any problem, FC or else. Without reboot for about 3 days (reason flashed Philz kernel 23.09)
Finally happy with my note :victory:
Hope that helped
