Signal strength issue - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have 3g connection (airtel India) and has been adviced to use wcdma only. I observed that the network signal strenght is very low in one of the room in my house and data network also had dissapeared.
I changed the data network to wcdma/GSM mode and not only did the 'edge' connection pick up but also signal strength increased to 3 bars. I got full strength when I switched to gsm only mode.
Every time I switched to wcdma mode signal strength drops almost to zero. This doesn't happen @ my office where I get strong signal.
Is this a known issue or should I get my phone diagnosed?
I am using unrooted phone with latest stock rom ddlb2.

though i have not tested, but when > 1lac download and still 4.7 Ranking, might have something.

Hi Richy,
Thanks....but what I fail to understand is why there is change in signal strength when I change data network mode. See images..

Already Richy told you
At your Home 3G reception is poor, device gives priority to 3G, when it is available, N you have configure device mode to Auto, it try to join 3G network, when it fails it joint 2G network, as 2G reception to your home will be stonger.
There are different cell tower for 2G n 3G. N simply your home is in such area where 3G reception poor, 2G is strong.

Simply put it mate, you can't do anything on that anymore.. It is your carrier's (AIRTEL)'s downside on not delivering true 3G on your place.
The best thing you can do is to go somewhere else (apart from your home) where true 3G and signal strength is best and without any issue at all and try to connect to the internet.

Thanks to all....much relieved.
Infact I visited service center near my home today evening. Was difficult to explain to the front office girl that my phone had radio (antenna) issue, while the signal was showing all 4 bars lighted.
Came back dissapointed when I was told it may take minimum 3 hrs to run diagnostics ....I couldn't part my phone immediately, what with my corporate mail configured..
And posted this in XDA......

Dear Naveen,
Any update for your problem? The GT-N7000 bought by my dad last week also has reception issue, thought only in office! And he is on Vodafone. Just wanted to know if this is a generic issue or not. Again, it doesn't happen all the time, only when he is in office and certain times when he is on road.

No issues, understood it was weak 3G inside house. Now made it a practice to be on 2G always and switch to 3G only while browsing or streaming videos (watching IPL live).

[Q] Intermittent Data Network after flashing rom

On stock 2.1, I get 3G practically everywhere I go, but when I flash a rom I always get the H or E symbol and sometimes it randomly goes dead even though I just had H or E in the exact same spot... What could I do to improve this?
H is another symbol for 3g lol ithink all builds have this

Tried JI6 - I'm using Serendipity 5.8 and it's the same. I get like 4 bars, then it jumps to 0 and randomly I have no connection. I forgot to note, it is for both Data and Voice networks...
If it helps, I'm in Orange County and when I do Speedtest my scores are abysmal on "H" I get 270KBPS down and 130 KBPS up.
The "H" is 3.5g a little faster than 3g. If it keeps alternating between "H" and "E", I would definitely consider flashing a new modem.

I've flashed 3. All of them do this. :/
Highest I've gotten on Speed test is with Jk4 and it was like 800kbps download... And it's usually around 200-300.
have you tried to disable HSPA? To do so, go to your dialer>type *#301279#
select [2] then select [1] . see it that helps
*edit* If that doesn't work, put the phone in airplane mode for a few minutes and re-enable.

Thanks man. Trying it now, will report back soon...
Still iffy... I dunno but I dropped my old phone in water with the SIM card. I got a new one, but could it be the SIM card that's damaged?
It very well could be the sim card.
Hope you get your phone working again!

Any ideas on how to get a new one? I don't want them to see the custom rom, but how could I tell them I'm gettin iffy service without showing up with my phone?

[HELP] Connect to the internet but get no signal icon

Hi! All...
After I did a lot of flashing (sometimes 4 times in a week), I get this strange.
I'm sure, I'm in 3G coverage area. So, I always set my Network Mode to WCDMA only. As usual, I can access to the internet but for this time on stat bar I get no signal icon like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",

}
I guess it's because of simcard, then I change with other simcard (different provider), but the result was same - connect the internet but get no signal icon.
Then I tried to install with custom rom and flashing to stock - doesn't change.
Is there any hardware which is broken?
Concl.
Set Network Mode to WCDMA Only:

Bt i think 3G myt hav got deactivated so just check once... Bcoz its showing GPRS connected. Even the same thing happend to me. When i shift to 3G i.e WCDMA i dont get signal and as u said USSD and none of them works. But this happened to me once my 3G pack finished and my 2G pack was started. So could be problem with operator. Try in GSM it would surely work. These days operator came to knw our many tricks.. So when we change to WCDMA we dont get 3G signal.. They don't let us use 3G unless we hav activated it..:good:
Got it?
Hmm... How to check if our 3G have activated?
I try the simcard in modem device, the signal get 3G/HSDPA and works well to surfing.

Actually 3G can be checked by changing to WCDMA by as I think it is not activated so its not showing. N coming to modem.. some modems r unlocked. N it works as only 3G modem. So dats y its showing iin modem. Hmmm but even I experienced same. N came to knw that only if 3G is actiavted we get signal. See as I said.. I wasn't getting signal.. so I activated 3G for one day n for that whole day I got 3G signal. So I think only dat could be probs.. ttu to search plans reg ur operator in net for one day. N try den hope u will get signal of 3G:thumbup:
Hit thanks if that helped u:thumbup:

mobile data gets shut down while on call

good evening/morning/afternoon (depends on where you read this) XDA
today i present you my strange situation:
my N7000 drops the mobile data connection every time i'm on a voice call.
it holds on for a few minutes at best then it simply drops it down until the call ends.
after the call i have great troubles connecting at 3G speeds and mobile data shows only the E for EDGE.
Hello, we got a Q+A section for these questons
Not all mobile operators allow for simultaineously voice+data, check with your operator.

It is normal for data (edge not 3g) to get disconnected while in call..
From your explanation it looks like you're set in auto mode that switches between 2g and 3g based on network ..
Instead just switch over to 3g only
If you're on a 3g plan simply set to wcdma only under network settings

I'm sorry for misplacing my thread, i've always said to myself think twice before posting and so did i this time but i was very tired from work and i thougt of my post not as a real question but as a mere discussion about mobile data
maybe a mod can move this in a more appropriate section?
my apologies once more.....
will think tree times before posting my next thread

thanks for replies
i dropped a message on my carrier support forum hoping for an explaination as i read through the ToS of my carrier and they state very clearly that i'm allowed to have internet and voice call at the same time.
more about the theme: until now i always had internet and voice calls at the same time with my Nexus S even on Edge and without any drops..
ATM i'm on a Paranoid android rom and can't find any setting about 2/3 g mode selector, just a checkbox saying use 2G only, wich is currently not checked:

This may be irrelevant, but I had noticed it long back when I used to use a galaxy ace.
Relevant points : I stay in mumbai (india) and use vodafone EDGE (2G)
When I used to make a call, the EDGE connection used to always disconnect, however, whenever I had to use my gf's nokia E63, the EDGE use to stay on while on an active voice call. Now I dont quite remember what settings I had kept i.e 2g/3g or 2g only & gsm/wcdma or gsm only.
I used to think it was a samsung thing. As I had noticed a similar event occuring when I used another network (reliance GSM)

Worse wakelock on HSPA than on LTE. Anybody else?

I noticed that if I force HSPA rather than letting it use LTE, my idle drain is noticeably higher. So I did an experiment with better battery stats, and sure enough I get 2-3 times more wakelock in HSPA than in LTE. See attached screenshots. First is LTE, second is HSPA.
I ran the experiment several times and the results were always the same. I even did overnight tests (9 hours) and results were same, with LTE always being around 5% wakelock and HSPA as high as 15%.
Phone was in exact same place and under exact same conditions for all tests. Signal strength is actually BETTER for HSPA than for LTE, so that's not the problem.
For what it's worth, on Wi-Fi wakelock is even lower, down to 2%.
Anybody else? Any thoughts?

The results might technically be correct, but the impact seems negligible. In both cases battery charge is still 100% according to your screenshots.
Would be interesting to see this test to cover say 24 hours at least, but I'm not sure you can stand not to touch your Z3C that long

It's not negligible though. The reason I did the test in the first place was because I noticed faster drain over the course of a day or two on HSPA versus LTE. The test revealed that my perception of faster drain was likely correct given that HSPA has 2x to 3x as much wakelock time.
So yes over 3 hours maybe no noticeable increase in battery drain, but over 24 or 48 hours it was noticeable in real life.

Probably due to this issue which plagues Sony phones. I've had the Z, Z1, Z2 and now Z3C and they all suffer from this. It can only be fixed if you have root access.

I'll be interesting to get that a bit more quantified over a longer duration/period of time in order to really judge the impact. Anyhow, I do not see this behaviour on my Z3C and battery goes down by just about 1% in say 10 hours.
Conditions:
- connected to 3G/HSPA network with mobile data off,
- BT on (never turn it off),
- WiFi off,
- FW: .98 DE (what is yours, BTW?).

Btw, if you turn mobile data off, doesn't that effectively disconnect you from HSPA? I think you need to leave it on.

No, not that I'm aware of. Why would it disconnect from the HSPA/3G network just because one turns mobile data off?! Further, you can check this on the status page of your phone, my one does not switch networks while turning on/off mobile data.

Because HSPA/3g IS mobile data.
I don't think the status page is very helpful either. It shows what network you are supposedly connected to even when you are on WiFi, even though on WiFi you are not really connected to mobile data, either.

Ok, we're going to mix things up now. Disabling mobile data does not mean you're not connected to a 2G or 3G network. So, even if you're using WiFi, the phone remains connected. How would you be able to place/receive calls otherwise?!
Calls are not placed placed over the HSPA/3g networks. They ate placed over the 1g networks I believe. (Until voLTE at least).
Sent from my D5803
In other words, you can disable 3g/4g/LTE and whatever else and you can still make and receive calls and sms because they don't go over what we typically consider the data networks. That's also why calls work even when your APN settings are wrong.
But I'm no expert. That's just been my understanding for the last several years.

No and no. Calls are placed over the 2G and the 3G networks, some providers even via LTE (VoLTE) now. There're are no more 1G (analogue) networks anymore since years. So today it all starts with 2G.

You're again mixing and confusing two things over here. A mobile network (no matter the generation) can (and is) used for a.) voice and b.) data. No such thing like an exclusive mobile "data network" anywhere. APN stands for Access Point Name which is the name of the Gateway between a Backbone of a mobile network (e.g. 2G, 3G, 4G) and an external packet-based data network, that is the Internet.
Please, make yourself a little bit more acquainted with mobile networks and the terminology first and then come back on the core problem, if there still really is one.

I'm using ATT (have an older nano SIM from a Samsung Alpha so it's all setup right), and enabled WIFI calling in the SIM1 settings. I've tried calling when on WIFI and it seems fine. I'm not exactly sure what to expect from it. Would a good test be to be in a place that has no cellular service, but has a WIFI router , and then try to make a regular call? Is that the bottom line?
Thanks.
I have signal basically in one spot in my house.. anywhere else and my signal is dead... Turn on wifi calling. The vowifi display that replaces volte will flash on/off over a time period and then will pop up with the above message and will turn off wifi calling in the settings..

You have WiFi calling working on AT&T? I don't even see the option for WiFi Calling or VoLTE on my OP3T. The Enhance Settings are non-existent. When I search for WiFi in settings, I see WiFi Calling, and can turn it on, but it never stays on. When I go back into the setting it is off again. Anyone else on ATT get either of these options to work?
