Would love to know if this is possible as well.
Did some reading and it sounds like those frequencies are specific to Europe and Japan. You may be able to change it in firmware or get a wifi driver that supports those frequencies. I've also read there are some legal issues regarding this.

I did a lot of research and finally gave up. I read someone said it's hardcoded in the wifi driver. In that case, we can do nothing unless the kernel is specifically modded for this.

Seem to remember certain channels in America are restricted for military or government use.

From what I've read, 12 and 13 are European channels and 14 is Japanese. Perhaps it might work if you could load firmware on your router from those areas. I have never tried it.
I don't know if its the same but in the ROM I'm using (cyanogenmod 7.2 RC1) you can go to wifi settings and change channels 11 13 and 14 under the option regulatory domains
I just changed my home router to a European location. The extra channels became available but my IncS was not able to connect to them.
... great guys! THANKS SO MUCH!
This solved my problems <3

Can anyone confirm that their Galaxy Tab can connect to wifi on the 5.8 GHz range?
I'm trying to pair it to an N-only router that is using WPA2 with AES on the 5 GHz range, channel width set to 40, and it doesn't seem able to even see the network.
Make your router have a channel 12 or lower. The tab is b or g compatable.

Ahhh no. I connect to my wifi n 5.8 signal all the time. It does take longer to show in the wifi settings field as it scans for g networks first.
I use a linksys e3000 with g on my 2.4 channel and n on my 5.8 channel. Tab connets to n all the time.

Okay, I got this one figured out. It turns out my Tab won't connect to 5GHz channels 149 and 157 from my router.
It turns out that 149 and 157 are allowed in the US, but not in Europe according to this article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
When I flashed my modem to JPZ to enable calls on my AT&T tab, did that also affect my Wifi? If so, is there a way to enable calls and still support all US 5 GHz channels?
I can make/receive calls when I am at home on wifi. Jk3 modem here.

You were stating bogus info saying the tab only does b and g when right on the box it states wifi n. I then gave a description of my setup for reference. Not being smarter just truthful. Oh, and i didnt even ask a question so your reply makes no sense. Stop being a jackass on the internet just because you got corrected about something.

I use JPZ modem and the latest Dip7 rom and i can make and receive calls while my wifi is on and connected on wifi n 5.8. My width is 40 and my channel is on auto. You mentioned something about europe being different, maybe the router you have doesnt broadcast out at the settings you are trying?
Hope this helps you.

Could you try setting your router to channel 149 and seeing if it works still?

Your box is smarter than my box, because my box doesn't give any info like that. You are smarter than the at&t website and Samsung's too, because they only claim wifi connectivity. You are smarter than everyone, but you could use an attitude adjustment, because a solution different than one that a god like you has doesn't make it wrong. We are only here to share ideas to people looking for advice. Don't be profane or rude please.

i have a netgear router 2.4 and 5g and i cant connect on the 5g setting either
is the tab compatible with this
i have my router settings on 40 for 5g i tried 149 as well
no change
and channel is set at auto and i tried channel 7 as well no change
this is a N router dual mode
Would any dev's be able to integrate this into CM7 or something standalone? Its such an important feature it would be incredible to have.
Seems http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208830 have had a bit of luck with the SGII. I know the N1 doesn't support UMA but AFAIK its software based, and we didn't have an FM radio or 720p to start with either!
Any thoughts?
There is the wifi calling app, but I know that was originally just for T-Mobile phones in the states. I am not sure if it works with other UMA-enabled operators. I know it originally started out on xda, but I am not positive on the link, but I think they have their own site now and it is here http://unforgivendevelopment.com/ It is blocked at work, so I can't verify it.

I came across them too, but for Orange UK it would require their specific app and some specific tunneling to work.
Anyone?....
So, just been reading this:
http://phandroid.com/2015/05/22/off...android-5-1-1-with-wifi-calling-this-weekend/
Being on EE in the UK, who have just launched WiFi calling, I'm particularly interested in the above article and would love to see it on my device.
However, I'm just wondering what it would take to get it on my device and what the requirements are. Would be so handy.
Could I install the above 5.1.1 T Mobile version and simply change my APN?

Unlikely. I don't think the EE wifi will be the same as T-MO USA, even though EE is 50% T-MO UK.
Already have it. Side loaded it. Signed ota zips are available for download on the internet

That doesn't really help the OP. He was hoping the t-mobile wifi calling app would help him wifi call on a different provider.
Yes, I'd be interested to know this as well. It would also be nice to know if the new O2 HD Voice ( http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Welcome-News/HD-Voice-is-rolling-out-on-O2/td-p/879709 ) is working with LYZ28E. Not sure what network @toString is on.
yeah It would be cool if this could be used with sprints wifi calling.. but I doubt that's possible

Me? I didn't even post in the thread!
i am unable to find safestrap.
neither of the mirror links in the many threads i have found function.
i used root genius to root it because of this.
i'm really looking forward to lollipop and a mugen battery.
to be clear i am indeed able to use my phone in the intended geographic area, 800kbit/200kbit mobile data seems sufficient for facebook and google maps on the go.
now ive seen various mentions of patches being needed for umts/gms support, is this not unusual?
the network i use here in new zealand supports umts 850 and 2100.
please help me make the most of the most versatile android phone in existence.

Is there a way to get channel 12 and 13 working on the nexus 6 2.4 Ghz wifi? When you go on vacation on europe these should have a flag to turn it on. IS there an app or option? US phone version. stock android 6.0
Probably
I would be inclined to think they are enabled just nothing in america transmits on those channels. They show up in Wifi Analyzer app anyway
version 4 used to have a menu for this. I think some coder never fully understood the specs.
Can someone test this and fix this please. People go on vacation this should work right.

I'm not going out of the country anytime soon, but I just checked my Nexus 6 on Marshmallow 6.0.1 and I don't have that setting option.

This setting isn't there on stock 6.0.1, I have seen it in CM 13 however.
