Hello
My DS7 has a broken port (that plastic line right at the center of the port is chipped). It charges only if I insert the connector a bit crooked... but the device its not recognized by any computer. I've spent hours trying to do it with no luck.
I would like to root it and test some other roms. Is it going to be possible without being able to connect it to a computer? An SD method maybe?
Please help! I did search before posting this... couldn't find an answer.
Thanks!
Do you already have CWM installed? That basically answers your question.

Like TheManii said, if you already have CWM installed you should be in business, but the fact that you can't use the port for flashing is going to be hinderance if you ever need to NVFlash or adb anything. So I recommend to be VERY careful and do nothing without much thought
It's much, much worse to have a broken port on the S7 compared to the S5. As you can remove the S5's batt and charge externally.
Consider yourself lucky you can charge at all, otherwise it's already a dead device/motherboard.

Thanls fpr your answers, I am running the latest official Honeycomb and unfortunately I don't have CWM installed...
Why not SDCard?
My other Android device.. the only way to root it was via the SDCard.. so I don't understand why a SDCard option is not available to the Streak-7.

Because ....duh....they are different devices?
so I guess there is nothing I can do right?
Pretty much all the stuff needed needs to be done via the cable. Now if you have 2.2 installed you can install Gingerbreak apk that will root it. Other than that, its sucks.
Well, some time has passed since I started this thread. I was wondering if maybe there could be a new solution for my problem?

First allow me to ask you this... do you know what root is, do you have any knowledge of adb commands, do you have the Android SDK and/or the Dell drivers on your computer and lastly do you understand the layout of the file system?
I can easily just type out the commands but I want you to understand the process
BUT I'm not sure this works... since you aren't rooted already I don't know if you can push files to the system folders

If you're on 2.2 froyo try using gingerbreak. Just do a quick Google search for it, and it will give you the XDA forum link for it.

Hi,
Complete noob here!!
So I had rooted 2.1 stock and update to Froyo leak first one it came out I believe (System Version 2.3.9.MB810), and lost root.
I would like to upgrade to the new 2.3.13 Froyo, but I'm not sure if I could just follow the instructions on the threads because they are about going from 2.1 rooted to new Froyo.
Is there a difference in the installation? Can I recover root? Do I loose everything I have? I have Titanium root but since I lost root it hasn't been backing up I believe
I been looking at both of these threads lately, sound like the instructions might work (again complete noob , so not sure)
thread: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764304
thread: androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/174152-brand-new-froyo-2-3-13-a.html
Thanks for your help in advance.
Update
I used the instructions on the thread on here and ran into an error when running the update zip
Says Error: Status 2
What can I do?
Neither will work without root... follow D2 root instructions.
So follow the instructions on this thread
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7838000&postcount=1
And then just follow the instructions as they are on the new froyo threads
Thanks!!!
Yes, that should work. Wait for someone else to confirm this though, unless you are adventurous.
rage-against-the-cage is a 2.2 exploit, the way I understand. It isn't specific to the D2, but as I said, wait on someone to confirm. I don't know a whole lot about this. More of a lurker than a do-er.
I saw it a while ago and thought about doing it, I was waiting for another 1-click-root type of thing, so I couldn't mess up. I'll wait and see if someone confirms it then.
I used this method to regain root after the 2.3.13 update and it worked. If you know how to use adb its pretty easy.

Try turning usb debugging off (System settings > Applications > Development).
And then connect in PC mode again and see if the phone installs itself.
Try the other modes, mine work in mass storage.

I tried searching for this, but could not find it. If the answer is somewhere, I would appreciate pointing me the right area.
How do you install Overcome ROM via Mac? The installation guides say to use ODIN, but there is no ODIN for Mac. Well, at least I couldn't find it.
Please help.
BTW, I'm all rooted, etc. (used the ./adb install z4root.apk) through the SDK/Terminal. I've already backed up using Titanium back up.
Any mac help would be greatly appreciated on how to install Overcome on Mac.
I tried the update/upgrade no wipe version, but it did not work. After rebooting I got a message that there is no "update.zip" file found, if I choose that from the clockwork recovery boot menu.
Thank you all in advance for any help.

Why don't you read first or do a search inquiry before cluttering the forum. also this sounds more of a Q/A topic. Heimdall is your answer if you would have searched and researched you lazy bum.
Are you serious? Thanks for making a judgement that I'm a lazy bum. I searched for 3 hours. Tried everything to get the signature error fixed. I've download version 1.3 of Hiemdall. Don't be such a zealot. OS X is closer to the Linux OS that Android runs on than Windows is. Also, what's to say he's not running OS X on a "PC" (aka a Hackintosh). Android hackery is certainly easier via Windows but perfectly possible via OS X as is evidenced by the various devices I've modded on a combination of the two systems, plus some Linux modification for good measure.
I think by "PC" you mean "Windows".

1) You should clarify the title. Something like "How to update to v28E without USB". Imagine every thread like "LG P990 question", it's absurd.
2) You should tell us if you want the vlite or the full version of v28E.
3) CWM 5.0 is not the latest.
4) Yes, it is possible, put everything in the sd card =P.
Good luck.
Hello, apologies for that.
Thank you for the fast response.
I would like to install the full version, I am aware that you need to specifically partition the ad, but I can read grains thread for that.
Can I just confirm then, that if there is a zip for the new downloader, cwm and Rom in one zip.
That can be run from cwm?
Thank you

First -- In case you want to go full metal on P990, that means repartitioning, new BB and full flash, you need to flash. There is no other way than using NVFlash, as described in lovely thread in development by Stephan G.
Reasons - reformatting is not easily done from within phone which runs on these partitions, same goes for reflashing recovery from within recovery.
Second -- not sure why without USB?
Third -- there is CWM-possible way by using TonypAndHarsh's vlite V28E rom, yet this goes without new BB and with possibility of no call audio issue.
So, to repeat my answer to your main point, no. There is no way to fully install new system/BB without USB connection and PC. You have to flash it.
Hello. I think you can instal the new ICS without your usb cable.
1. you need to instal rom manager from PlayStore and flash from here the CWM recovery. I recomend you to instal the version 5.2.0
2. Make a nandroid backup before you do something to your actual rom.
3. Use titanium backup to backup all your apps and settings.
4. Put ICS rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1959545 in your sd card (i think you have at leat a card reader and on adapter to put your microsd card) and follow the isntruction from the download page.
Good luck!

I'm sorry but I disagree with you... I think that anyone that thinks about the title for 2 seconds can understand that if the guy is asking if it's possible to flash v28e without USB of course he means the "full" stock ICS leak, the one which requires you to redo your partitions and whatnot... the one that is only possible through nvflash, thus, it is not possible to update to v28e without USB.
Or, you could just reply... hey, it's not possible to flash "the real deal", but you can flash tonyp's "lite" version, which uses the old bootloader and a patched kernel (thus some bugs might come from that) and all you need to do is put the files in the sd card...
I don't know why you had to be so "blunt"...

Thank you for that information, I am currently trying to find out if there is a way to install the right version of CWM, then try to install the new bootloader from within CWM? I am not even sure if that is possible.
I think she is just going to have to get her phone sent back, the only problem is the o2x is discontinued, I doubt they will replace it or fix it. They will probably try and replace it, but only give her something that I wouldn't consider a good replacement. But we'll have to speak to her insurance company first.
I have seen these phones selling on ebay, they are about £100 from what I can gather, it depends what she wants to do. Could buy a new one and sell her one, just a shame really, i found another thread about the USB problem and they had to send it back and get it repaired, must be either a problem with the connection or the board, I would think the board as it charges fine, which is really weird.
Anyway, thank you for you help, i will keep searching to see what i can find.

Hi
I downloaded a stock Rom that had been modded.
So I could be sure that I would have cwm in case anything went wrong.
Rom loaded and was able to get into the secret menu.
I will say that under USB connection type there was misspelling where it said:
LG USB adnroid
Not sure if that would affect it.
I selected that item.
Then went to port.
Selected the different options in ordered and waited about 10 seconds on each turn, then pressed find any changes in device manager unplugged and plugged the USB.
Then tried in different orders but with not luck.
Took the battery out and tried holing the vol up down the plugging in USB but to no avail.
Then pressed power and vol down.
The phone tuned on and showed LG sign then switched off.
I tried pressing check any changes as the LG sign came on but nothing.
Then tried nvflash as the LG sign came on but nvflash showed no connection.
Very weird, definitely dead but still charges, doesn't make sense.
Oh well
Ordered an atrix with work and play kit for 68 quid, has a broken digitizer which will cost 20 pound, on average, off ebay.
Thanks for the help though.
May take the 2x apart when new phone comes and see if there's any physical damage on te board.

No you will need a computer to do this. I would not advise modding your device at all if you do not have access to a PC.

Because if something goes sideways, and eventually it will, youl'll have no clue what it did, and how to fix it.
Nexus phones have open source tools, adb and fastboot, to manipulate them, they are very easy and straightforward to use.
I understand that coming from different phones, that only have hacks and tricks to unlock the bootloader and change the recovery, using tools seems obvious, but with a Nexus it's counterproductive, and makes fixing things so much harder.

Thank for that insight. I wanted and took the easy/prepared route for unlocking and root of this phone. I was once familiar with manual way when the N2 was unlocked. I got to re-learn again. My last job made me very anal retentive about following instructions, and I think that made the rootkit easy to use. In 3 days I used it when I got with 5.1.1 and yesterday for 6.0. Today I flash Roms to find the one I like.

Why do people keep saying you need a custom kernel??? BTW, used nexus root toolkit on the K build without problems, no luck on R(never had N) but the tool got updated.... However... I would not be using any thing chainfire Su related sinds it got sold out.

Because at one time it did require a kernel change to get root.

Because you needed a custom boot.img to root 58K too. It will either contain a modified kernel with SELinux set to permissive (I've patched mine by hand, so I know what I'm talking about), or contain an updated sepolicy binary to allow su to work. Also since you said you didn't have red triangle, it means your fstab.shamu was also replaced with one with disabled verity.
So. Don't use rootkits. If you do use rootkits and discover you don't know what's happening, at least please don't keep correcting those who try to help you.

I was hoping that someone would answer this. Flashing files and rooting on Linux is MUUUUCH easier than Windows. Why? No need for special drivers to recognize your device.
Even better, if you try to run a adb/fastboot command without having them installed, Linux will tell you the actual command for you to type and download/install them...all within the command window.
This might sound confusing, but it is really easy and seamless, in my opinion.

Most of what you said depends on your distro.
On Arch you definitely need to add u-dev rules for the phone to be noticed, and if you dont have them installed and you try to run it, it won't tell you how to download.
But.... If you install via a package manager it will be automatically added to your path
Also, I have NEVER downloaded drivers for my phone in windows, and never needed to.
That's good to know. I should've added that I use Ubuntu as my distro, and I love it.
