Hey everyone,
I've had my Galaxy a few days now and I noticed there's no obvious option to turn off 3G like there was on my old Topaz.
Does anyone know if it's possible to turn off 3G (not data connection, I still want to use 2G) to save battery life.

Go to settings > wireless and networks > mobile networks > use only 2g. The option is there.

Erm, that option isn't there, all it says in mobile networks is:
Data Roaming
Access Point Names
Network Mode (this is only GSM/WCDMA switching)
Network Operator
I bought my phone as handset only so there's no branding and is rooted (option wasn't there before rooting either).
Can anyone help? Is there an app that can help?

My options changed when I upgraded to the newest firmware available in Australia. GSM is 2G and WSDM is 3G.

I downloaded an app/widget from the market called DCSwitch ... it allowed me to disable/enable my HSDPA radio with the touch of single button on my homescreen.

Install an optimus 3D rom is the only way to disable 4G and keep 3G. You can't disable 4G without disabling 3G on an att rom.
To disable 4G & 3G go to the dialer and type *#*#4636#*#* and go to phone information. You may or may not have the ability to switch off 3G. Some have it and some don't.

Doesn't seem to be a way to turn LTE off to conserve battery. I mean, you can turn off Mobile Data all together but that seems to be the only option.
On previous phones I have always tried to go through the day with the slowest data possible to conserve battery, then when I am surfing on need the faster data, I just turn it on.
At least in the Canadian version we have the option to not pick LTE. In settings->Wireless & Networks -> mobile networks -> Network mode
These instructions for the Thunderbolt work. It's a bit much to go through every time you want to switch, though.

*Edit*
Nevermind. It appears that you cannot change the default Preferred Network Type on this phone with that method.

Unfortunately the AT&T Phone does not have the Network Mode selection although I would guess once we get these phones rooted and what not we will probably see Rom's for AT&T That have that option included.
This would have been nice to do for those of us without LTE at the moment.
Also in the same boat wanting to turn off LTE and go to HSPA+ or even just Edge while I am in the office not using the device for anything other than text. Phone taken off charger at 8am and is now in the yellow range.
Can someone with a rogers version do the temp root, and then pull their settings apk for us? Would that do it if we install?

diagnostic mode still works too, you can set your network via that.
dial from phone dialer "*#*#4636#*#*"
hit "phone information">"Set prefferred network type:"
(do not use the quote marks from above)

it worked on the Aria and now the Vivid.
I have two and doesn't for either. It'll let you hit it, and act like it worked, but check the screen, sleection doesn't change. Always stays same

I'll play with it on the Vivid but on the Aria, if I changed it and either toggled airplane mode or rebooted it would usually switched to what I changed it too. It would not change immediately after changing it in diagnostic mode.

Was your aria rooted when you did that?

No 3g on vivid. Only LTE, HSPA+, and Edge.
I'm going to the try logging in as well and will try the switch when i get the phone. Post up if you've had luck with either of them and if you've seen an increase in battery life.

Changing the APN will drop you off LTE. yay finally found a way!You can even then use the *#*#4636#*#* phone pref method to turn it to WCDMA and have it still. I hjope that means it turns off the LTE radio entirely. Will see with battery life.
Thanks... hopefully this helps battery life a bit.
That is my ONLY complaint about this phone so far... well that and the locked bootloader.
I would like my phone to be connected to 3g all the time in order to save battery... Is there any way to do this? Changing to gsm, CDMA in network settings still gives me hspa.
Thnx

HSPA is still 3G. If you want you can select to use GSM only and you will only get EDGE connectivity.
Dial *#*#4636#*#* , go to phone information, and there's a dropdown which by default says WCDMA preferred. Switch that to whatever else you need. Also, remember that this setting does not stick after reboot so you need to reset it to your preference each time after you reboot your phone.
Misread, sorry.
My phone is stuck in 2g. Everytime I switch to 3g or 4g my signal will die. Does anyone know what is the fix for this?

add correct APN settings for your carrier in Settings -> Mobile data -> Access point names -> menu -> New APN
I did that but still no signal in 3g and 4g.

Go to dialer, type *#*#4636#*#*, go to set preferred network type and make sure you select an option that includes CDMA, LTE and Evdo
