Do you have any reccomendations as to the best software for doing this?
Also does anyone know step by step how i would go about it so that i could see the photos on google maps etc?
Thanks in advance Grin
I also have no idea of how this is done and am interested..
I believe the iPhone geotags and works with google maps?

Doesnt explain whether this works with Google Maps (al'a iPhone), plus another question - why on Earth didnt HTC add this feature by default?
1. Download and install: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=69442&d=1202399126
2. Download and install: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=99781&d=1216258426
3. Open programs
4. Open Advanced Config
5. Change GPS Photo from disabled to enabled (optionally enable the rest of the camera settings while youre at it)
6. Soft reset
7. Open your camera, touch the screen and choose the middle symbol (The camera one)
8. Choose the last set of options, and choose GPS. (It might help if you opened a GPS app first like Google Maps or TomTom to enable the GPS, or it might take a while to get connected.
Your geo-tagged photos is in the Internal Storage\My Documents\My POI folder.
The geo-tagging doesnt work if you e-mail your photos to Flickr - you have to use their Uploadr program.
To use with Google Earth - first use iTag (http://www.itagsoftware.com/).
OK..Hope this is the proper place to post this...
I am horrible at remembering to charge my phone, thus I don't keep GPS on at all time because of battery drain. However, I find it frustrating that every time I start Google maps that I have to enable the GPS. It seems to me that there should be a function built into that app which would enable the user to have it automagically enable the GPS reciever on the apps start up. To my knowledge this isn't possible but I feel it would be very useful. So, does anyone know how one would achieve this? Would it be possible to write a script that would accomplish this?
Thanks in advance for the input.
Menu button, Settings, Security & Location, set "Enable GPS satelites"
if you enable gps it wont actually turn on until you open google maps or a location based program (you will see a satellite dish at the top letting you know if it is on). the gps setting basically just tells the phone if a program requests gps location it is okay to turn the gps antenna on.
otherwise its off and battery doesn't get affected
Thanks...
Hey dk75 & averma, thanks for the posts. I should really read the fine print on some of these menu options prior to asking these questions...oops!
Hello!
My wife and me use latitude (from google) to see where we are on Google maps. Latitude works best if the GPS is on. HOWEVER, we just need to see each other on google maps when we are driving home (between 17:00 and 18:00). If i turn on the gps, latitude will eat the battery the whole DAY...) I would like to know if there is a way to schedule the activation of the gps...

Try looking up "Locale" on the market. App isn't free, but most of the plugins for it are, and you can combine the functions of the plugins to do almost anything.
I use it for exactly what you're talking about myself.
Google Maps doesn't Auto-start GPS
Hi all,
I know this thread is pretty old but hoping for a reply all the same. I'm using the Galaxy S in the Uk with Google Maps & Navigation. I used to have the HTC HERO running maps & navigation and whenever I started either of those apps, the little atenna would appear to show that it was trying to find a gps position.
However, on my Galaxy S, whenever I start Maps or Navigation nothing happens. Even though I have "use wireless networks" and "use GPS satallites" both checked.
I cant imagine that technology would have taken a step back from such a useful feature and it is really irritating having to remember to disable/enable GPS (using SwitchPro home screen widget) before being able to use Maps or Navigation.
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this??
Install Tasker app and create a profile that enables GPS when you run Maps app.

i have spent sometime now lurking behind the scenes in this group and
have read, in detail, my share of the posts. Make no mistake, the
guys here are experts and being experts their methods/explanation
often goes way over the head of the typical noob. this post is to
introduce this wonderful application of tasker to the inimitable
noob. i hope my effort would ease someone's labour.
imagine this scenario: you switch on maps on your phone and keep
wondering why it does not show your precise location and then it hits
you! you did not switch on your GPS. this post explains how to create
a profile that switches on your GPS automatically when you fire up
maps.
Just remember this: Profile is the context i.e. what you want to do.
in the present case, you want to first start maps and when maps is
started you want to switch on GPS. then when you exit maps, you want
GPS to be switched off. this is the object.
Stage 1: In profile tab click the + sign. give a name like 'MAP'.
this name will identify the profile that is currently active. after
you name it press the green tick and you are shown several options
like application, time, day etc. Now maps come under applications, so
press applications and all the appliations in your phone are
displayed. scroll down and select maps and press the tick mark. at
this stage you have told tasker that whatever you want to do revolves
around maps.
Stage 2: Now that you have hinted to tasker about the application
that is to be run, we should next state what should happen when the
appliation is started. after you press the tick mark you will be
shown a window asking for task selection. press new task and give it
a name like switch on GPS.
Stage 3: after baptising the task, you will be taken to a broad
window . press the + mark on the bottom left and the confusion
begins. a pletora of options is thrown at you (this is why tasker is
so darn powerful). this is called the 'select action category'.
digressing a little here you should know that google has changed
something with android and you cannot in the usual course toggle GPS.
so you should download an app called 'secure settings' (from google
play) and install it. once it is installed open it and it gives you an
option to install a helper. install the helper also. this activates
the GPS option.
Stage 4: once that process is completed, come back to tasker and get
yourself to the 'select action category'. here press on plugin and
then on secure settings. in the next window, touch 'edit' and then
scroll down to GPS and touch it. three options are displayed viz. on,
off and toggle. choose on and press the floppy disk icon to the
bottom left. press the tick mark and again press the tick mark. at
this stage you have succeeded in activating GPS when maps is started.
however, when you exit maps you find that GPS does not switch off by
itself.
Stage 5: to make it switch off by itself, you need to create the same
task again. just long press on the task which has already been
created (called here as switch on GPS) and you are presented with
several options. select the first one - 'add exit task' and follow
the process as in stage 4. however, instead of choosing 'on' select
'off' this time. once this is done come out and test it.
Stage 6 - and the most important - Feel happy and satisfied.
i am sure there should be some easier way to do this. however, in my
limited understanding of tasker this was how i did it. i really am
confused about the variables. i hope someone will help. when i say
confused, i should clarify that i have no inkling of what it does. :
( could someone tell me where to read up on it? i have searched on
google and i havent found any satisfactory explanation.
i will continue to post my profiles and i hope it is of help to the
group here.

Thank you for your post, I wouldn't be able to do it without you man!
I have a question. I'm using LBE security master which monitor my firewall, wifi, adware, etc. is there a way for tasker to check in LBE firewall and toggle my wifi/data when I want it? instead of creating a new profile for ON/OFF wifi. I just want it to look in my app and see what app has permission to what and allow/un-allow.
Thanks again!

Yes is does autostart if you want with tasker..

You can use the "Auto-Enable GPS for Maps" application, which switches both WiFi and GPS on when you launch Maps, Navigation, Local or Latitude, and restores them to their old state (e.g. switched off) when you quit these apps.

How to enable the location settings along with the GPS ON task?
Only thing keeping me from using the stock browser is not being able to get my bookmarks as my homepage
Any way for this to be done?
Run a script or set homepage and put the file path to the bookmarks instead of a url?
looked on google and everywhere and seems no way for this to be done on stock browser.
Figure some type of workaround for this should be available by now.

This will probably get moved to q&a or somewhere other then android development.
If you have cyanogenmod 6/adw you can do this easily.
long press blank spot on one of your screens,
click custom shortcut,
click pick your activity,
click Activities,
click Browser,
Click Bookmarks(CombinedBookmarkHistoryActivity).
Enjoy your new shortcut to bookmarks. Alternatively you could use anycut/bettercut to launch this specific activity.

Sorry if this wasn't in the right forum but reason I posted it in development is I actually want to change the browser homepage to the bookmarks in the actual browser app and not simply put a shortcut to the bookmarks which current isnt an open with the stock app.
Reason for this is many times when I use my browser (dolphin currently) ill open multiple tabs (windows whatever you want to call it) strait from my bookmarks
So for example at the homepage(aka bookmarks) I long press on a page and open in background
I do this for maybe 7 pages thus they are loading at the same time and I can do what I need
With the current config with every new window I open the original window goes back to the homepage thus I have to re-select to access my bookmarks instead of the bookmarks page simply staying put
I know this isnt a big deal but it would save me at least 1 extra click per page I want to open doing this so it can add up over time
Don't know if this would be desirable to many, but with launcher pro you can set the swipe-up activity to pop up your bookmarks. So on my launcher I can start the browser normally or swipe-up and select the bookmark I want to access directly.

Thanks for the info but still simply a work around. Im sure im not the only one who would want this
many other browsers allow this such as opera (even if limited to 9) or xscope and even miui browser
Also chrome on my computer shows by default the most visited sites when opening a new tab which is almost the same thing
Hi
The Note is my first smartphone ever, lol, and I am really exited to exploit all of its functions. I am not sure whether it is android or specific GNote Q's, but I hope some of you can help me out, please.
1) When I am in an open program/app, how do I close it from there? I can go for the Home click or Back/reverse and then afterwards choose active programs and then I can close them. There must be an easier way?
2) These starting screens there are 7 of them to scroll from side to side, but can I add more and can I make them scroll up and down instead of sidewise?
3) I hope I can managed to make my calender to sync. with my work, Outlook, but I dont want them to se my private tasks/mettings/dates etc., How can I deal with that?
4) If I have more programs/app open, how can I shift between them?
5) I have at two private webmails and one working mail, and then I have Linkedin and Twitter profile, one private and one working, each. Further more I have a tons of RSS feeds...
Any good adwise on how to deal with all this in a smart way?
(They should have made room for two simcards, lol).
6) Private calls are forwarded to my work phone, but if I make calls to some of my private friends from my working phone, I still want them to see my private number and not work. Is that possible?
7) I cannot see the difference beetween fully off mode and standby, can I make a standby logo or something to insert?
Moved To Q&A
This is a collection of question, and as such should be in the Q&A section

If you go back from the program, it'll usually close it. Some programs choose not to close in that instance (such as the web browser and stock SMS app.) Those programs can be left running - they usually won't cause any problems. To be honest, you can leave everything running and android will take care of "cleaning up" whenever it needs the memory.

You can add or remove them, but using the stock launcher, you can't change the direction they scroll in. This may be a feature in some third party launcher (such as GO Launcher, ADW Launcher, etc.)

What is a "smart" way and what isn't? I have all my private emails consolidate into a single email address (similar to how gmail/hotmail/etc can pick up from other boxes) and keep my work stuff seperate. I don't do social networks, so can't comment on that.

No. I'm not sure why you'd want to, though. If you tap the 'home' button and nothing happens, it's fully off. If the screen wakes up, then it's in standby. I'm not sure why a phone would be turned full off, though.
Hope this helps

Thank you, but...
Thank you ☺ Sorry for a slow reply. I was not able to figure out how to split up qoutes, but I hope you can follow:
1) (Closing an app issue) Well I guess closing applications is a pc OS thing. Still wont it drain the battery more to leave them running? Using the back is not always a solution, if there are several steps. To stop the music player u must either pause it or u need the ''active programs'' on one of your home screens.
2) (Number of home screens > 7) I mean can I add more than 7, so I could have for instance 10 instead, and how do I do that?
3) (Calender Work and private issue) In outlook (work) I can mark them as private, I kind of hoped that it was possible with the Note too. Anyway how do I add another calender?
4) ok ☺
5) (several mails/feeds etc., overview issue) - lol, Well I need to keep some structure, I must split it into a few mails accounts and merging them would kind of kill the whole idea. Anyway I can chose each mail account for the E-mail app or I can choose the Social Hub, so I think it covers it depending on what I need…
6) (specify number I call from) Some day I might do so, Thx. Though perhaps my work will pay for my private calls also and then I can stick to one number.
7) (standby/clock screen) The watch app with desktop thing, do the work ☺
See post #50 for a new user-customizable version, RN Menu 2.0!
*Updated to v. 1.1.1--more accurate placement of menu in landscape*
Version 1.2.1 substitutes FastMode2 for NoRefresh.
This app is a toggle which places a small menu directly below the status bar "reading now" button and extends the function of that button. While the app can be used as a stand-alone toggle, it is best used by reassigning the "reading now" button with Nook Touch ModManager to the app. No function is lost, as the first item on the short menu is "reading now". As currently configured, the menu options are:
1. Reading Now (same as original stock button function)
2. Orientation (a landscape/portrait toggle using Rotation Locker)
3. No Refresh
4. Set Cover (which potentially sets the screensaver image to the current book cover)
See screenshot below.
While the app is not user-configurable (maybe some day, probably not) now that I have produced a template to work with it is reasonably easy to customize and I would entertain requests for specific items--assuming I can figure out how to implement them! There have been other approaches to setting a menu in this position, but they have involved modding jars and have been limited to specific firmwares. This app should run on all firmwares and does not require modification of any jar files. If you don't like it, you just uninstall it and it's over and done with. For me, this project has been a proof of concept and I've learned a lot. Maybe an extended power menu is next?
Requirements
--Rotation Locker (attached below) (required for Orientation option)
--No Refresh Toggle (I am running NoRefreshToggle-debug2, but it may not matter--someone can let me know?)
--Root (required for Set Cover option and for menu itself as of v.1.1.1)
--sqlite3 (available in this post where the screensaver option setup is explained in detail)
--As this is a Tasker-generated app (but does not require Tasker to run!) there is a dependency on two library files normally installed with GApps. If you do not have GApps installed on your device, you can still use this app by copying the two attached files into the locations shown below (the xml file is zipped so you can download it rather than view it):
/system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar
Set permissions for both files to rw-r--r-- and reboot. Without these files resident, the app will not install.
---------------------------------------------------
How to use
The best implementation is to reassign the "reading now" button to this app using Nook Touch ModManager. When that is done, tapping on the "reading now" icon will produce the menu and you can make your selection from there. If you inadvertently tap the icon, you can dismiss the menu by tapping again. It's a toggle. Starting with v. 1.1.1, root is required to allow the app to query the current screen orientation. This enables a more accurate placement of the menu in landscape mode.
The screen orientation by default is, of course, Portrait, so the toggle goes immediately to Landscape. Landscape runs as a background service (notification) to lock in the feature since some apps resist the change. Selecting orientation again returns you to Portrait and ends the background service until the next selection. It's also possible to exit Landscape by tapping on the notification. This brings up the three-line menu (invisible text unless you have altered your background image colors). The top option is Portrait.
The first time you select Set Cover you will be asked to allow root access. This part of the app includes shell commands and thus needs root access.
That's it! I'd appreciate bug reports and/or suggestions and welcome requests for customized menus (at least for now!). Enjoy!

I can do that easily if I know how the library is supposed to work. Is it just sending an intent, starting an app or....?
Also, there's nothing magic about 4 items, so if you want fewer or more, that's doable.
Edit: I've looked at the Library app. Very straightforward tap-and-go. So just let me know if you want any more (or fewer) items and I'll get on it.

Wow! That's awesome! Yeah, I think those four would be awesome!
Could you also make one with
1. Reading Now
2. Renate's Temblast Library
I have bought and rooted many NST's for friends and having just those two options will be very convenient for them... They aren't really techy, so too many options would just confuse them.
That would be useful for them when I make other NST's. I'm planning on making 3 more, so I think that would be great! The one with 4 options on it, I'd be using personally.

Thanks so much! I'll put it to use and see how it runs. I'm sure it will be great.
It runs great! I have noticed that this theoretically could be used to have a second quicknav menu. You can activate it also by programming one of the side buttons to show/hide it. Great job!
If someone didn't want to run the launcher, this could save them from using it with their most used apps on this.
@nmyshkin ... thanks ... I would be interested in this app, I wanted to have the default 'reading now' on nook reader ... and a customizable option so i can probable configure some other reading apps and their last read book directly opening when the option is invoked ...

Edit: or, did you forget to install Rotation Locker first? Because that app is one of the menu options, it's seen as a dependency and my app will not install if it doesn't see it there.
As I made it, however, the app will not do what you want. It is not programmable by the user. At the time I made it I was just starting out with making apps with Tasker. I suppose it would be possible now to produce an app that is more flexible, but it would not be very user friendly because there is no way to predict what someone might want to do and therefore code would almost certainly need to be sussed out and written in by the user. That doesn't sound like something people would really want. In any case I'm still bogged down in my Dictionary project so.....
If you have a static set of wishes, that would be easier.

Oh Dictionary project for our Nook Simple Touch and Glowlight ?
Is it interesting ? If so pleas share the link to ...
Static set of wishes ... It has a limitation of 4 buttons only ?
1. Nook continue to the Last read book and position.
2. Amazon app so that will direct the user to the amazon app with the last book open.
3. App Drawer
4. Nook Clear Screen
these would be my 4 if 4 is the limitation ... however if more were to be accommodated then ...
5. File Manager(Root Browser)
6. Statusbar - Glowlight
Would a cleaner implementation for the 5th & 6th options and others separately as an app that can be mapped with NTMM to the Statusbar - Glowlight button(primarily because this part is accessible directly from the book you are reading in the default nook reader, some ting of a quickaccess tiles/lists with the below ...
1. Glowligh & Wifi
2. File Manager(Root Browser)
3.

Not ready yet, but slowly getting there. The app is complete. Still testing to be sure it won't destroy the NST/G. I have a few more dictionaries to complete.

That's how it is now, but any number of buttons can be added. Do you really want a laundry list?

So you seem to be describing (kinda) my QuickTiles app. Have you looked at it?
Take a look at that (which includes the Nook Clear Screen option and the Glowlight and WiFi controls, but not a file manager option) and see if that would meet your needs. Modules could be added but I did sort of want to keep it to display/mode functions, rather than turning it into a sort of launcher.
After that, confirm your choices for the ReadingNow menu and I'll see what I can come up with. Not sure about the Kindle app opening to the last book, but the info must be somewhere that could be poked at.

that's good to know ... its for NST/NSTG ... I just can't seem to part with this device myself ... and you are developing things for it ... can't get any better than that !

as far as the kindle app and its last read book is concerned, you don't have to dig deep ... when i read a book on kindle and exit out of the app without hitting the back button ... the app will start with the last book open.
The following sequence/order should be good enough for 4 entries ...
1. App Drawer
2. Nook continue to the Last read book and position.
3. Amazon app so that it will direct the user to the amazon app with the last book open.
4. Nook Clear Screen
thanks for all the help ...

Huh. Wonder how/when that happened? Try it again. I uploaded a new copy and downloaded it to test. Worked fine this time.

No problem ... i was able to download that xml file from one of your other threads whose pre-requisite too was to have these very same 2 files to be present on the device.
I opened your RN app and the drop down did open on the top left book icon ... but this opens only one time ... Does one have to reconfigure using NTMM so it opens every time ?

I downloaded and installed the apk (1.1.1) from the first post. It runs fine for me. Did you get and approve the SU prompt?
There's nothing special to be done with NTMM other than assign the app to the "reading now" soft button.
Did you by any chance reinstall over a previous installation when you were having trouble? If so, you need to do a complete uninstall before reinstalling on apps like this with toggles. If the toggle variable has been messed up it will stay that way unless you do a fresh install since installing over an existing app of the same version preserves the data (like the state of the toggle variable).
@nmyshkin ... thanks i figured ... Is it just me or the Nook Book Button app seems to be a little quicker(about 2-3 seconds) quicker than your RN app to show the drop down menu on invocation.
Not sure if its just me and my device or its across the board.
Cheers.

No, it's not just you. I could change it like I did QuickTiles so that it responds more quickly but as I don't use it any longer, I have never revisited it. It would involve an "always on" overlay of the button.
