MMS capture video - camera has stopped - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I try to send a video text message I get the error "Unfortunately, camera has stopped." I can take videos/pictures no problem. It's just video texts. Any thoughts?
I'm running AOKP ICS M4 on a Samsung Captivate. Other wise I'm not having any problems.

I have yet to play with a ported ROM such as the ICS, but I have heard that nearly all of ported ROMS, or at least those that don't have the same framework as your captivate, have bugs, so i imagine that a bug with the camera isn't unusual for such a rom. Did you experience this while using stock or another rom?

Strange camera problem

Whenever I flash a custom ROM from stock eclair, the camera just doesn't work half the time. The camera app would open and it would just be a blank viewfinder. I found that closing and reopening the camera like 3 or 4 times fixes it temporarily. When I leave the phone sitting for a while and try to open the camera, it always opens with the blank viewfinder.
I tried searching about this but I guess it isn't a common issue at all, so if anyone can offer any advice I'd appreciate it

Well this really depends on the ROM you are flashing when coming from Eclair, which ROM did you try, and which kernel with that?
Well, I was on Team Hacksung's ICS build 17(icy glitch v14 b6), AOKP(same kernel), Doc's Master(the kernel that came with it), and Slim ICS 3.1(the kernel that came with it). I also tried a custom gingerbread ROM which I can't remember the name of atm.

OK, I think the problem is that all of the roms you've been flashing are ics builds and all of the ics builds for the galaxy s are ported at the moment, and because they are ported they don't always work. So my guess is that your camera doesn't work because of your ics builds, why don't you try a ROM built for captivate like fasty ROM or darky ROM or even cyanogenmod7?

I actually have tried cm7 but the camera would not open at all with that one.

None of the CM build are made for the captivate, try a rom built from stock and see if the issue happens on that. Maybe try legend rom from crt it is a very good rom based off of stock kk4.

I've tried flashing legend but that got me into a bootloop. I have successfully flashed Simply Stock, but I had the same camera issue.
This was a while ago, but I remember having camera problems as soon as I got the official gingerbread update from froyo. If I remember correctly the camera would always force close as soon as I opened it.
you must have a hardware problem.
camera works fine on ICS for the past 2 months at least. nothing but bad advice in this thread. i am running AOKP right now. used camera today.. used it now.. it works.
cm camera works fine, cm IS built for captivate, or in those thoughts... CM isnt built for any phone..??..
Well, I should also make it clear that the camera always seems to open with no problems on stock eclair or froyo, so yeah... it's a pretty strange case. I don't really want to trade everything else great about ICS and go back to froyo because of my ocd lol.

That's kind of what i meant lol its not a stock build.

Um, so is it unlikely I'll ever be able to fix this issue then?
Had same problem with every ICS rom I've tried. Seems camera only works with LCD density set to 220, at least on my phone. Check if it makes a difference on your phone. Under Settings > ROM Control> General UI> LCD Density

Any ICS ROM where Chrome doesn't crash?

Is there ANY ICS ROM out there with a stable Chrome that doesn't crash or freeze in the middle of writing long texts?
I almost want to go back to HC because of this, but then I can't use Chrome and I kind of like it.
If you have tryed all ics rom's than I don't know!
I haven't. But as far as I know they all have issues with the browser. AOSP GalaxianSoup, AOKP, CM, they all have reports by people saying the browser freezes/crashes/pages stop loading.
Delete pls

Yeah, maybe. I have to admit, I kept flashing new nightlies without ever wiping or doing a factory reset so I might try this when I get home. Thanks!
I try many ICS roms(>10), none of them make chrome work properly.
But I found one today, the newest cm10 preview 20120723. Chrome work perfectly on my 7310 now. Not a ICS rom though

[Q] camera failed, downgrade to 2.2

Hi good afternoon,
I have red some forums for my SGT p1000, but never found answer to my question.
I have tried several ROM (4.04, 4.1.1) but still can't find the one with good camera. While opening the camera, it always crashed "Camera not responding". Also, tried some application from Google Play as advised in other forums but they still failed. stucked at camera initialising"
I also restocked using Overcome safe method.. tried the camera, and it also indcates "Camera failed".. I am not sure what have happened since I came from 2.2 ROM wiith the camera working flawlessly.
Can someone give me an instruction on how to downgrade to 2.2 and link to official 2.2 ROMs..
Thanks and really appreciate if someone could help
why don't you just use the overcome gb stock safe method that you used before.
it will be an official GB JQ1 rom.
why must it be a 2.2 ?
Edit: didn't read that you said overcome stock safe also has camera failed.
strange.

no, it's not just sound but the camera won't open.. that's why I want to try 2.2 to check if my camera app would be fine.
BTW, what JellyBean ROM are you using?
I'm using SCH-I800 (gtab verizon) and I'm stuck with camera not working. Error : camera has stopped.
I'm tried 2 rom : cm 9.1 p1c and aokp milestone 6.
Anyone got issue same me?
MDP issues
Could MDP issues crash camera hardware??
Could changing ROM from an MDP to a non-MDP crash the camera drivers??
hope anyone could clear things.. thanks in advance

I've had the same type of problem on my vzw tab. I played around with CM9 and the app would crash if using the flash. Right now I'm on an unofficial "beta kang" gb 2.3.5 ROM and the camera almost completely works, except it crashes if I try to use the front camera in video mode. (The front camera works for snapshots, and it works in other apps like Skype). The stock roms seem to be the only ones that have a 100 percent correct working camera. There are rooted stock roms out there, so I'd suggest one of those.

Droid Bionic camera fix

Whenever there is a camera fix for kexec, ics, cm9 anything like that. Will someone please contact me & tell me how to fix it?! It will complete my life!! Thanks in advance.
I wasn't aware there was any issues with the camera for the ICS leaks. However if you're using a certain rom and having camera issues I would suggest you find the support site where you downloaded the rom rom and asking there. You're not really giving any specific roms you're having issues with so there is no much way of helping us help you. As far as Kexec the only roms I'm aware that's currently using that is the JB roms which are in alpha stages and if I do recall...they state that camera is not working. Was the camera working before you decided to jump onto a rom or leak or w/e?
Any rom I flash through kexec has camera, screenshot & freezing & crashing issues. The camera is completely thrashed on cm9 & cm10. They won't even open. There was a lot of issues when I went from 232 to 2233.

2233 is a older build then 232. move to 232 and dont go past untill the OTA. everthing works on the stock ROM. cameras are broken in kexec build of CM10. im not sure about the kexec build of CM9. non kexec builds of CM9 have a working camera. hope that helps you
Thank you!!

[Q] Which post-gingerbread N1 rom is the least buggy? [ANSWERED]

I cant run Gingerbread (GB) because many apps I use do not support such an old Android version.
So it must be between Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), Jellybean (JB), and Kitkat (KK).
I've tried a few roms and cannot find the buglessness I seek:
[ROM] [4.1.2] [Mar 18 2013] Slim VJ Jelly Bean 4.1.2 - v1.0 for N1
VJ's previous non-slim JB rom
Evervolv's Kitkat
j00m's Kitkat
MIUI.us's unofficial JB port v2.12.28 (considerably worse than the official GB MIUI rom)
reider123's CM10 rom
tommypacker's pixeldroid AOKP kitkat
tommypacker's CM10.1.3 Android 4.2.2 v2.7
parkedraccoon's CM11
Evervolv ICS
All of them contain frustrating bugs. So the search continues to find the most workingest post-gingerbread rom.
Together, I'm sure we can find it! Who's got a lead?
And the winner is...
j00m's kitkat!
I'm using it on a 198/3/235 hboot (system is only 191mb)
one of the only roms besides official Evervolv that has trackball wake toggle (no more pocket wake-ups!)
on my recommendation, j00m replaced the /system/app/Torch.apk with one that stays on after screen turns off.
Tip: enable lock screen widgets in Security settings, and put the torch widget on the lock screen for quick access.
j00m fixed WiFi tethering (w/security set to None only)
i replaced the slow buggy stock kitkat browser with UCbrowser (it's even faster than dolphin)
i turned off the clunky window animations in Developer Options for a snappier experience
i installed the app Videocam Illusion to enable video recording
this is as bug free as it gets. Daily driver ready.

Hmm, the only decent post-gingerbread ROM I found was Evervolv/J00m's KitKat. It works fine for me, but others haven't had such luck...Evervolv JellyBean (3.2.0 I believe?) was the best alternative, I can't remember what problem caused me to switch back to CM7. I think (if my memory serves me correctly) that one time it was the home button that wouldn't work, but the second time around it worked, I think it had something to do with running out of space, perhaps due to the GAPPS? Anyhow, you might give it a try and see if it works for you. Maybe try to flash the core GAPPS and get the play store to install your stuff instead of the full GAPPS which is way bigger.
I have the same problem with a 4.4 evevolv, the phone restarts constantly and gives me process.media was interrupted.

Maybe I should give Kitkat another try... I remember having a delay to answer the phone on Kitkat... one time I kept waiting for the screen to turn on while it was ringing and ringing, and eventually i missed the call cuz there was no way to answer it.

Actually, the solution isn't as easy to find as I remember. What worked for me was to clear data of media storage: Settings > Apps > All > Media Storage. Others have reported that they had to clear data of Contacts and Contacts Storage located in the same place.

I can not even get there, and it freezes before it restarts.
That recovery is to be used with black roses to install the 4.4?
Because the CM11 at the time of the flash failed?

You've tried the Evolv 4.4 kitkat, continually reboots and tells me that android.process.media was interrupted.
Now I installed the 11 cm, everything ok, except that the gapps did not install, and when I open mount2sd asks me to install a script, do the procedure but do not install and I get this error: Failed to reboot the device into recovery because the limitation of the rail toolbox
The 31-12-13 built is not useful at all. Its the worst. Try CM 11 an wait a few days for a update.

so the problem is the rom, gapps or are incompatible? if I wanted to put the Evolv, I have to change the hboot with blackrose? how do you?

I'll give it a try.
@PhilipTD, yep, I think that's the one: [ROM] [DEV] [ICS 4.0.4] *7/1* Evervolv's Aosp TexasIce Cream Sandwich
hboot 220/10/206
I found a working download link to the final version of Evervolv's ICS rom (Evervolv-Perdo-2.2.0-Final-passion.zip): http://evervolv.codefi.re/builds/release/Perdo/
And its corresponding gapps: http://d-h.st/AxV
I tested Evervolv's ICS and immediately found 2 bugs that have been haunting me:
Cant play videos embedded in webpages.
Pressing the trackball to take a photo always requires 2 presses for the first photo.
So I gave the latest j00m's Kitkat another try, and while it's not bugless...
it seems to be the ONLY post-gingerbread rom that can play videos embedded in webpages.
Still has the camera-trackball bug. (is this bug present only in evervolv-based roms?)
Videocam illusion app works on EVERY rom for video recording.
Kitkat at least has the potential of fixing bugs as it is currently receiving very frequent updates.
So I think j00m's Kitkat is the way to go.

j00m's KitKat is really good. The only reason I switched to Evervolv's was because I wanted to try out ART on my device and that setting had been removed from the j00m's nightly...but ART doesn't work on my phone so they're both good for me. I might go back to j00m at some point since it is simpler to flash (don't need to flash GAPPS on top!) - plus it has a boot animation that has a clear start so I know whether my phone is in a bootloop or simply taking forever to load.

Additionally, j00m's rom is slimmed down to only 211MB system which means it should work perfectly on the ICS hboot - 220/10/206 saving lots of space!
The stock kitkat web browser is barely usable. Chrome browser is even worse. Thankfully, the Dolphin Browser works really well!

I've generally felt VJ's v6.0 4.2.2 was the slickest version of JB that I've used till date on my N1.
I've used PixelDroid, Carbon, PACMan, ParanoidAndoid and Evervolv. But while these ROMs are customizable and have different features, VJ's ROM had the perfect (imho) blend of CM and Vanilla Android which was right for me.
Video recording and Tethering won't work but the rest of the features are pretty cool. As far as KK ROMs are concerned, they are still not as smooth nor as stable as the JBs yet. I've only started playing around with @parkedraccoon's CM 11 and @texasice's 4.4. I expect better updates to follow.
