[Q] long text messages automatically converting to mms - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

whenever i copy paste text from browser of more than 160 characters to text someone, the message automatically converts to an MMS. is there anyway to stop this? i want to send long text messages. if i type manually i'm able to send long messages. trouble only while copy pasting from clipboard (browsers).
thank you.

I'd love to get rid of that as well...

i found that the stock app cannot do it. need to go for third party apps like go sms pro or handcent..

Had the same problem on my Dell Streak running Froyo ... Same problem on Note and Gingerbread ... I dumped the stock messaging and moved to Chomp SMS and now Handcent SMS ... No problems in either app and I sometimes send rather long texts

If you do fancy changing your SMS app go to the Play Store and search BigSMS. It simply allows you to send huge texts.

Great. So i've probably been running up MMS costs unknowingly. Ridiculous. Should send Samsung the bill.

stock messaging app required for other messaging apps

Hey guys. So I was in terminal deleting the stock apps that I don't need to have and one of those apps which I deleted was the stock messaging app, I did this because I was using hancent. Well now I am not receiving text messages
- It all started after I deleted the stock app, I am not sure if it started immediately after or a while after
- I was using handcent and I noticed that I was getting the pop up received thing and the quick reply option but in the actual handcent app under each conversation the incoming message was not there.
- I then switched to chomp sms to see if that would fix it. Now I am not getting the quick reply popup message received (in chomp)
Are there any suggestions to fix this or knowledge about this topic? Do you need to have the stock messaging app inorder to have other messaging apps work? Oh ya, outgoing messages still work.

still getting charged for messaging with handcent?

so i downloaded "Handcent" text messaging and it works fine... other then getting double notification i had a question:::::
since i get double notification it obviously means the Stock SMS still gets text messages from people i send messages to from handcent... do i get charged towards my texting plan on the stock sms? or not?.... if i am, would a solution be to rename the stock sms file with .old in the end of it so its gone? will i still get charged towards my plan?
Handcent uses the same SMS system app so there's no extra charge for texting via it.
To solve the double notification, just go open the default messaging app, hit menu -> settings -> uncheck Notifications.
Now you should only get notifications via Handcent.

Technically, yes. The stock sms program still gets the texts. But all it really is doing is accessing the same system SMS program as Handcent.
They're both just front ends for interacting with the SMS program.
You don't get charged "extra" for using Handcent versus the stock messaging app.
I've been using Handcent from day one and there's no extra charge and all my messages show up in both apps. I just never open the stock app.
Handcent doesn't bypass SMS charges by using data. It's just another app that does what the stock SMS app does, just a bit more prettily.
For free SMS you need Google Voice. But note you have to use the Google Voice phone number as inbound/outbound. Also, there's no api for sending messages through Google Voice so you can't use any frontend app besides Voice itself.

Ahhh, I see now. Yes, any texting from your phone's number is charged to your texting plan.
To use SMS through Google Voice, just give people your GV number and have them use that to text you. It will not be charged to your plan text bucket.
First install the GV app if you haven't...
Then, as the previous guy said, just have people text the GV number. For outbound texts you can either fire up the GV app and select "Compose" from the menu/respond to a text someone's already sent your GV, or go to Contacts and use "Send Message" for a contact (the first time you do this the app choice menu should pop up -- you can set GV as the default for future uses).
Make sure Google Voice isn't set to forward the text messages from your Google Voice number to your cell phone number or you will be charged for the text sent from Google Voice to your Cell number.

[Q] google voice texts via handcent on NC.?

I use GV for my business. The UI is not the best. I wish I could use handcent instead. Can I set up handcent on my nook color so that it somehow intercept my texts and can send texts also? I simply inatalledhandcent and tried to use it but it just sits there trying to send. And if don't think it receives either.
bump...sounds like a great idea

Problem with sending long texts?

Hi guys.
When I send long text messages, say 3x160 characters, it send the text as a multimedia message. This is highly annoying as I have unlimited texts on my tariff and I get charged for multimedia messages as its not included in my contract. Is there any way to solve with the default Galaxy S application?
Not too fond of Handscent and I just want something simple that works and I dont care too much for all the bangs and whistles of the Handscent app/alternatives.
Change rom dude, developers have noticed this and have hacked the mms app to allow users to have an unlimited amount of SMS pages without it automatically converting to mms, that's all I can advise bud, change rom

Is it possible to just replace the app with the modified version? I'm currently on stock odexed 2.3.4 (jvq)

facebook messenger mms photos appear for split second then disappear

hello all,
i've been trying to setup facebook messenger as my default text messaging app (meaning sms and mms). i seem to have no trouble sending out and receiving sms messages, but i do not receive mms messages that others send to me, and when i send one out to others, it appears for a split second, then disappears. my app defaults show facebook messenger as the default sms app.

This is an old post, so I hope you found a solution for it. I'm having the same issue an I found if you send it with text or the person sending it includes text it shows up. That's the only fix for it I've found.

On Facebook messenger you can't, but on other sms apps you can. Like on gosms you can include text with the pic which stops it from disappearing. I wouldn't recommend gosms cuz of the ads. I just have an old copy from Titanium back up that I use with no ads. Besides that you have to stick to the sms that comes with it or go with a good sms with no ads an just include text with the pic, unfortunately a person sending you an mms without text, the pic will just dissappear.
