Problem with sending long texts? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
When I send long text messages, say 3x160 characters, it send the text as a multimedia message. This is highly annoying as I have unlimited texts on my tariff and I get charged for multimedia messages as its not included in my contract. Is there any way to solve with the default Galaxy S application?
Not too fond of Handscent and I just want something simple that works and I dont care too much for all the bangs and whistles of the Handscent app/alternatives.

Change rom dude, developers have noticed this and have hacked the mms app to allow users to have an unlimited amount of SMS pages without it automatically converting to mms, that's all I can advise bud, change rom

Is it possible to just replace the app with the modified version? I'm currently on stock odexed 2.3.4 (jvq)

[Q] Stop SMS auto-converting to MMS

Hey guys!
I just discovered an annoying feature on my SGS which I think is a general feature of Android phones...
I usually text long messages (I'm on an unlimited SMS plan) and I get frustrated at the fact that whenever I pass the 3 SMS point, it auto-converts my SMS to MMS. This would be useful for those whose carriers naturally charge less for 1 MMS as compared to long SMS but mine isn't one of them (15 php/mms versus 1 php/sms or free)... and besides I'm on unlimited SMS so this "feature" wastes that plan of mine.
Anyway, I was wondering if there's any way at all to suppress this behavior. A quick Google led me to solutions of just cutting back on texts/sending them in multiple parts or using Handcent SMS app.
The first is too inconvenient for me and the recipients of my texts and cutting back on texting is difficult for me and shouldn't be a solution.
As for the second, I've tried Handcent and it does have a setting to not auto-convert long SMS to MMS but I dislike the layout/theme. I prefer having the look of the original messaging app of the Galaxy S. Nice and clean and blends with the look of the whole system. No matter what tweak I do to the themes and such, it just doesn't look good for me.
So my question is...if Handcent SMS has a setting of suppressing that behavior of Android, is there some way to do that without Handcent SMS? Maybe just a simple app or a tweak somewhere in the software perhaps?
Thanks so much in advance! This is really too annoying a feature and I just want to be rid of it.
I know this is sort of old but I am wondering the same thing. Anybody have any answers?
Foryo is said to keep it as sms http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=74cc9dfbd1669f47&hl=en
EDITED: didn't completely read first post.
I'm not sure if chompSMS has the option too, but it's much closer to the layout/simplicity of the original app.
Yeah from my research on the issue Froyo will in fact fix this issue...here's to hoping it will come out some time soon for SGS!!! I'm tired of copy pasting my long texts into Handcent SMS :/ it caused a disastrous mis-send recently )
I have yet to try ChompSMS..I'll give it a go later and report the results. If it does look better and has that feature then I guess it can help me deal better with this issue until Froyo comes out. :O
Anyone who has tried the Froyo beta for SGS willing to report if this issue really is resolved?
Thanks!!!
Still here
This issue is not resolved and is extremely irritating. Surely with all the Dev powar here this could be easily taken care of? I'd do it myself if I knew how...
Can someone please let us know how to stop SMS converting to MMS.
Handcent SMS works perfect for me when I need to type a long sms. But I hate that app and would love to stick to the standard one.
I am also irritated by this problem and could not find a way to deal with it other than dividing it manually; I am running on Froyo and it's there, very frustrating.

I also started using Handcent to deal with this issue and I'm very happy with it.
I find it very much like the stock application.
Its not really an andriod problem but a messaging application problem from samsung
Same here in Slovenia...my recipients also get the “broken message“ text sometimes, folowed by another sms with the txt ive written.
I also hate that if the reception is poor and u cant send an sms or mms, the phone wont retry sending when the reception is back... What gives, dammit?

Did anybody found solution for that?
MindFever, I'm also from Slovenia. Did you have problems with sending mms? It wont sent to Croatia numbers, and sometimes it won't sent to anybody or recieve it from others
Hi I have this very frustrating conversion problem also, handcent is a waste of time. so is orange (my network) they are aware of the problem but say that there is a fix on the way from android but noone knows when!!!!!!! anyone help in the meantime?
Hello!
I too have this very problem on my phone (running Darky's RC4). I don't want to use any 3rd-party application to solve this issue like handcent or chop. Is there a mod or a fix that I could use to fix this problem?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
Same for Galaxy Tab
Hi guys,
I have a galaxy tab and the same problem, checked under froyo and gingerbread. I thinks that in fact it is a Samsung problem and not android. It's just the messaging app that sucks. Waiting for samsung to fix it, I tried handcent and it's ok.

[Q] texting over wifi?

So my question is... can I text over wifi?
Here are the details: In two of my college classes, I get no signal, but have great wifi access. I want to be able to use something to text over wifi while in those classes. I just installed google voice after a quick google search... but it seems like you have to change this to be a permanent default messaging app (which I havent even tried to do). Most posts Ive run across have been people that want to text for free, but I have unlimited so thats not an issue. I really like handcent, so is there a way to text over wifi or an app just for those two classes or while Im at school or something without having to change the default messaging app 2x a day?
Thanks in advance for responses =]
You can't send SMS messages over a Wi-Fi connection with your default messaging app, so that's out of the question. You can use GV, but it you don't need to make it your default messaging app to send or receive anything. If you bring your computer to class, you could use Gmail, the Google Voice website(Which would be faster than your phone), AIM, or you could just not text anyone in those couple of classes and pay attention. In fact, that's what I recommend.
Pingchat is free, awesome and multiplatform (android, blackberry, iphone). Your friends also need a smartphone of course.

Okay MOM haha. Ill see If I can use GV for just a temporary fix... and Id rather not bring my laptop to school, its an inconvenience. My phone fits in my pocket. My classes are really easy and sometimes my text message conversations are much more interesting.

Ill try that out, I dont really like the fact that all my friends have to have it installed, but thats definitely a start!! thank you for the advice
I actually use GV as my primary form of SMS (I opt out of SMS on my plan) for unlimited SMS and free SMS to Canada.
If you do go that route, I recommend using this older version:

The newer version has an annoying lag to it.

Thats seems okay, the only problem with that is that I would have to ask all of my friends to install that, and not all of them have phones that can install apps. So that is a good idea, but I dont think it would work.
I have a small SMS plan with ATT. I downloaded the GV app and leave it running. I see no lag for what I use it for.

So I tried google voice and I can still make outgoing text messages without having it be my default app. So I think this still wins for people in my situation. I had a heck of a time getting a google number though, I ended up just doing it through my gmail and it was much easier.
Thanks guys for all the helpful advice!!

The only thing you can do is use a third party messaging app such as Handcent or Chomp, I personally use Handcent and will never go back to the stock app because of this silly issue. I'm certain Handcent has the option to turn off auto-convert long SMS to MMS and I'm pretty sure Chomp has the option too but I may be wrong.
Just google the two and see which one you prefer, there may well be others too
I also had this problem on my SGS, so I ended up developing an app to fix it called BigSMS. It's available on the Android market. It will fix your problem.
its not an OS fix but it's the next best thing imo

I've never had this issue before
Is it because you exceeded the 160 character to fit into one sms that it converts to mms?

plotinus, as acceptable a solution as that is, it's not right for some. As soon as some people see De-odexed, rooted etc, they're put off. People don't want to void their warranty, all for the sake of sending a bloody SMS.
As I've explained many times on other forums, manufacturers and networks leave this restriction and justify it by claiming it will save the user money. In reality, that only holds true if you aren't on an unlimited text plan. As most of us are, it's totally useless and very much a hindrance.
BigSMS is a very good solution. It doesn't require rooting. It doesn't require some big clunky SMS application like Handcent or Chomp. It's a fast, lightweight, modular solution that is fully integrated with your native SMS app.
I had this problem. Thanks for the solution

[Q] My Note sent the contact vcf as MMS?

Hi All
I tried to send a contact detail from my note (2.3.6 official rom with root and Franco kernel #6) and it turned the sms to mms?!
I could be wrong, but think that's normal?
Text message is purely text whereas contact is text, image, ringtone etc etc...

I do not think so, since I did not notice that during my using to HTC Sensation, but will try with some other devices tomorrow.
A VCF won't fit in the 160 character limit of an SMS, it'll always send it as an MMS with the .VCF as a binary attachment.

It there any thing can be done to change that limit?
I think that text capacity. Although newer phones allow you to input more characters, they're actually sending out multiple texts. If you've got an old phone and receive a long text it's broken into multiple texts.

If you send a vcard from an HTC phone, and import to another phone manifacturers device, you will often see something in the "Extras/notes" window saying "HTC:;data-bla/bla-yay/I'm a HTC phone/yayy." Basically there can be anything in a vcard, even weird code each brand reads differently. So I think you sometimes would get a freaking long sms message, hence the vcard needs to be one file, not reassembled from small parts.

[Q] long text messages automatically converting to mms

whenever i copy paste text from browser of more than 160 characters to text someone, the message automatically converts to an MMS. is there anyway to stop this? i want to send long text messages. if i type manually i'm able to send long messages. trouble only while copy pasting from clipboard (browsers).
thank you.
I'd love to get rid of that as well...
i found that the stock app cannot do it. need to go for third party apps like go sms pro or handcent..
Had the same problem on my Dell Streak running Froyo ... Same problem on Note and Gingerbread ... I dumped the stock messaging and moved to Chomp SMS and now Handcent SMS ... No problems in either app and I sometimes send rather long texts
If you do fancy changing your SMS app go to the Play Store and search BigSMS. It simply allows you to send huge texts.
Great. So i've probably been running up MMS costs unknowingly. Ridiculous. Should send Samsung the bill.
