Go into settings and turn off 'fastboot mode'. I think its in power settings ? Been a long time since I looked for it.

You want to go into recovery mode?
make sure fast boot is unchecked in power settings
turn your phone off
take the battery out to make sure its off
put it back in and hold volume down + power for about 4 seconds until you come to a white screen
And provided you have a custom recovery installed, use volume and power buttons to go to recovery
hope that answered your question
Here is a tutorial:

A simply Google search would provide you with the answer. ClockworkMod and 4Ext are 2 of the options you have.
You also could have found the information by simply reading the sticky posts in the section and the Development section.
You can use this method without disabling fastboot option in settings. Just click "reboot" and wait all lights are turned off. On the time, press and hold "volume down" immediately and wait for three android at the bottom on the screen. If you saw them, you suceed. Reboot option is fully turn off the phone and turn on with a fresh workspace for the booting. Just like a computer.

Easiest way to get a recovery is to download rom manager from the market/play store and flash recovery from within the app
you need to be rooted though

Sorry if this question is a disturbance. I tried to search for the solution for my problem about a week, but nothing comes up.
I'm a Nexus One new user. My problem is that I can't access recovery mode. I have rooted and installed flash recovery image to my phone. But when I access recovery mode from bootloader menu (surely pressing volume down + power), the logo X appears on the screen for few seconds, then, the screen goes blank. No recovery menu appears. I must press Home + Power to choose reboot or power down to start my phone again. I tried amon-ra v.1..7.0 to v. 1.9 and clockworkmod v.2.5.0.7, but my phone screen still goes blank. Now I'm in despair and don't know what to do. I want to change my rom, but I can't if my phone can't access recovery mode.
Anybody help me please.
I had the same problem after allowing Clockwork to access ROM in its submenu.
I used the following instructions to flashboot the recovery-RA-nexus-v.1.9.0-alpha.img
back into the N1 (blue care bear one).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611829
You need to download the SDK too to do this, but I'm guessing you already have that
Try Clockwork 2.5.11. It's been updated to support SLCD Nexus Ones. You can flash it straight from ROM Manager.

Thank you both of you. I have tried following the second post and it works!
Well title pretty much says what my problem is. I know there are topics that are pretty similar to this one and I read them, tryed them all and I still cannot make recovery mode on my phone work. My best guess is that network from which i bought the phone locked that somehow?
Here's what I've tryed:
Recovery Mode:
With the phone powered off
Turn phone on, while holding power button and pressing back button as shown in video below (start at watching at 0:40)
/watch?v=kReGHJw0elo
I dont think this way (below) is a proper way of entering recovery mode. Anyways i've tryed it:

UnPlug the USB cable.

Press and hold the power button with your right index finger til you see "Virbant" release the power button and it should be on the recovery screen.

I also tryed with battery out and cable on but all other things that I've tryed sounds more like witchcraft than anything else. So is it possible that network disabled recovery mode and what do you guyz think I should do? Tnx in advance.

Recovery doesn't come preinstalled with phone! You have to install it via flashtool!
First, you need to have root access.
Then, you can install a recovery, I´d recommend you to install Dual Mode Recovery (use the search button, because then you can have both recoveries.
After that, you can enter CWM recovery with touching the screen repeatedly while it´s showing you the white "Sony Ericsson" logo, and you can enter xrecovery by pressing any button repeatedly
Kernel
I have rooted my Xperia X8 and flashed kernel nAa on it, but I can't get in recovery mode no matter what I try..

press back button for few times to enter CWM Recovery in nAa's kernel.
note: you can't successfully flash kernel into your X8 when you only have rooted your device. you need to unlock bootloader! read these threads!

for first u can't boot up to recovery. cause sony doents have default recovery. u must install manual, xrecovery/cwm recovery. u can install it with x8tool, flashtool, or manualy pushing to /system/bin folder.

Use search before posting anything. X8 recovery has two or three types. Dual mode is to either tap the screen and back button. Most recovery is back button.

Hi,
I bought galaxy ace a week ago... updated via the latest gingerbread 2.3.6. (official way). After few days of testing the phone I found out that it is quite slow therefore I decided to root it... there is the problem, I cannot enter to recovery menu (home + power), even to download menu (home + vol down + power), everytime I hold the above mentioned combination I got soft reset of the phone... no menu, no nothing. I could not find anything on the web.. Could you help me how to enter to recovery menu OR how to root to CM7.2. a CWM without entering to recovery menu.
I believe the recovery menu has been blocked with new gingerbread 2.3.6.
Thank you.
I don't think so (about the blocked recovery) ..u go on trying dude ..recovery mode is a bit tougher to get in stock rom ..u should get it on the 10th attempt ( at least) I believe ..btw there are rooting guides in this forum ...check them out

does it mean that i should hold power + home for 10 soft restarts?
I think so here's a tip press the home button first ..keep it pressed and then press the power button UNTILL THE SCREEN COMES ON...recovery mode is tougher to get in stock rom(well at least for me )..in cm7 its nothing ..

I tried to soft restart 10 times no luck... even with your tip...can anyone else help me please?
only odin can help you as if you are not able to get into any kind of recovery and want cwm then odin is the only path for you .. do backup contacts, sms if you want
all other things will be lost..
and if you don't want to loose things then choose to skip rooting and love what you have now
and 2.3.6 haven't blocked recovery btw as i am using it
I cant use ODIN as I cannot access to download menu (vol down + home + power). Anyone else who can me advice?
turn your phone off!
Now without pressing the power button!
Hold the center button and plug your charger!
Still does not work, any other solution?
Try this if you have root access then install ROM toolbox from the market and try going into recovery via the app

HE CANNOT ENTER RECOVERY MODE!
If you bought that way you should take it back show problem and let service take care of that!
Say that you were trying to do a factory reset when you found out that you coudn´t enter recovery mode!
I'm on stock ROM, just flashed this morning using ODIN. Even root will go then. To go into recovery press the home+power button till the phone turns on, leave the power button not the home button. You should land up in recovery. If that doesn't work then try using ADB. Go to adb with your phone normally on:
adb reboot recovery
but try flash recovery again
to enter fastboot:
adb reboot bootloader
And if You've worked with ODIN then download a new bootloader and flash it using ODIN.I think (not sure) the problem is with secondary bootloader (SBL).Put the phone into download mode using ADB:
adb reboot download
This will put your phone in download mode. Check Odin now, and if ID:COM has turned yellow, you’re good to gnce you’re satisfied, press the Start button on Odin. The flash will take couple of seconds, after which your phone will reboot automatically.
That’s it. This should fix your download and recovery mode 3-button combo issue. You can now apply any mods with the normal procedure.

You had mentioned updating to 2.3.6 in the official way? Kies or Service center? If Kies then did you get the download mode when it was updating? And No, Recovery is not blocked on 2.3.6

I can enter to recovery ONLY with adb reboot recovery command, pressing home button does nothing.
Hello ladies and gents,
I ahve a very simple question, i want to follow the CyanogenMod thread to change roms on my milestone because it is acting up on me and it def. needs a refresher, but my main problem is that my power button does not work anymore, and i'm afraid the only way i have for it to turn on is if i connect it to a computer...when i just connect the phoen to a wall it just shows me charging...but as soon as i connect it to a computer it officially turns on.
So, do i need my power button to be able to complete the rom change, AND, is there such a thing as a rom or an app that would allow me to turn the phone on with a different button????
Thanks for your help peeps it is greatly appreciated!!!

Since my power button is broken, if ever it shuts down or needs to restart and doesn't automatically, i don't want to have to unplug it and/or temper with it...so basically well, that was exactly my question; will i ever need my power button while flashing/changing roms on the device?
If not then i will go ahead and do the rom change.
My 2nd question was, since my power button is broken, my screenlock/unlock is also unfunctional and if ever my phone shuts off i can't turn it back on unless i connect it to a computer. Is there such a thing as an app or a feature(from a specific rom) that would allow me to configure the phone to turn on with a different button? Same thing for the screenlock/unlock.
I hope i explained myself better

Can't help you for the first question... Think it's impossible to boot without power button nor plugged USB.
But for the second, it's known that all CM (at least since 7) have this option : wake up with volume buttons
Some other ROM include it but can't tell you which one. Sorry.
What scoutme saying is correct, when the mobile is turning on and if u have pressed the camera button, it will trigger boot to recovery mode.
One more suggestion, why don't u use quick reboot widget, it has option to reboot to recovery. It does all what physical power button does. Try it out...

I've been dealing with this problem for about 6 months or so, if you are about to start from the scratch like sdcard partition and sbf and applying stuff I guess there's' no way you can do it...
All I did was downloaded the required ROM and placed in OR and I got a app for getting to recovery which is "Quick Boot"
Search on play store, its free ;which has got 4 options in it namely reboot, recovery ,boot loader and power off ...did it that way
Hope this helps

To wake up the device (booted device, that has a locked screen) you can slide out the keyboard. CM7 indeed has a setting to wake it up with volume keys. For CM9 I do not remember and CM10 does not have that option yet as far I have noticed (I could be wrong, though).
What ROM do you currently have? Motorola stock? CyanogenMod? What version?
If you have non-moto it is rooted and has a busybox installed. You can execute
Code:
reboot recovery
form Terminal emulator which will take you to recovery. You can also connect it to computer, open Command prompt/Terminal (depends on your PC OS) and execute
Code:
adb shell
reboot recovery
Ccommand
Code:
adb reboot
to reboot the device or
Code:
adb reboot recovery
to reboot directly to recovery should also work. I'm unsure if it works on moto stock.
(Make sure you have enabled USB debugging in Settings.)
After that you should be directly in open recovery menu. Or press Volume up + Camera button if "stuck" on triangle screen.
Keyboard key combo, Left shift + Right alt + Delete reboots the device.
No matter what method you used to turn on the device you should be able to boot to recovery: while device is booting press and hold the keyboard X (needs to be done early in the process) to boot to recovery if you have bootloader 90.78. For previous bootloader vesions the camera button should do the same.
To boot to bootloader you need to press and hold D-pad up while the device is booting. Afaik, command
Code:
reboot bootloader
will boot to fastboot mode which is of no use for flashing sbf files (I can only assume that 3rd party apps and widgets use that method to get to bootloader/fastboot). You need bootloader mode to flash vunerable recovery, if not done already.
As minor side note, you have posted a help request in a Development section. Plus, all of this has been discused already. It is mostly scatterd around but not impossible to find.

For your question 1, please install this in your phone: http://www.mediafire.com/?wvw2sde2eldw2x4
there will be two icons in your phone afer installed, one for power off (can reboot into Recovery)
,another one is screen off.
For the second, all CM6(cm7 not sure) have this option : wake up with volume buttons (setting>cm setting>input setting>volume rocker wake)
By the way, if the PowerLock.apk doesn't switch you to recovery, you may need to copy this to your phone:
http://www.mediafire.com/?kvq45p4nscjwf88
How to use 60autoboot_or :
1) copy it to your system floder first
2) change permissions as:
VVV
VXV
XXX
3) then move it to system/etc/init.d
4) REBOOT

My milestone is still on custom rom, which is why i wanted to change it!
i'm trying to follow the guides on how to do it but holy sh*t do i feel like a noob. i used to customize the **** of my old windows phone and i've been out of the cellphone game in a while so im confused as ****.
Nonetheless, you clarified some good points, i thank you a million times for your time and patience; i'm gonna go ahead and try to install CM mod on here and hope it resolves all of my problems lol (gl to me ...)
oh and the reason why i ''lol'ed'' is beacuse all the terms he used in his post i was unfarmiliar with, so it was foreign language and i was confused as **** lol
I installed CM10.1 from this thread and everything went smooth and works great. However, no matter what I do I can't boot into recovery mode. I've tried the hardware key combinations, the power menu in 10.1/4.2.2 and I've also tried ROM Manager from CWM (to install the latest CWM and boot to it). Everything just boots like normal.
From what I've read I'm guessing I have a recovery that isn't compatible with my ROM? If that's the case, what recovery should I use and how can I install it using nvflash???
Finally got ADB working and was able to install gapps using the method found here (with minor adjustments): http://www.keyables.com/2012/05/use-adb-to-install-google-apps-includes.html
Very cool.
It would probably still be nice to be able to get into recovery if I ever need to... oh well.

Press Volume+ and Power and HOLD THEM

I am havIng the same issue with recovery but when I press and hold volume+ and power I get the samsung custom screen and I see recovery in very small blue font in the upper left, I am still holding both keys and then the phone just boots up normal. Any ideas?
