Hi all,
I woke up this morning and my note's screen hasn't been working. I didn't drop it or spill anything on it, it just doesn't turn on. I know the phone is on because i can hear and see the capacitive buttons light up when i touch them. Does this mean i need to replace the Super AMOLED/digitizer unit?
The only thing i can see is the white Samsung logo (very faintly at that) when its booting up.
I found a site that sells replacement units but i don't want to buy it unless i have to.
I need some advice.

Hey thanks for the reply. But i my phone is not even rooted. it was working fine last night.. the only thing i did different was i didn't charge it over night. So i thought at first it was a battery issue. I'm so sad... lol
sounds like the backlight is burnt out... unfortunately this is not something that can be replaced itself... the digitizer/lcd will need replaced. now is the fun part... either find the country your note is made for and mail it to the warranty dept, or have it fixed by a reputable repair shop out of warranty...
No need to have root, to go to stock recovery
Just switch off device, keep holding vol up + Home + Power
when light turns, release power button, but keep holding other two.
If you able to enter in recovery, N can read on screen, means screen is intact.
wipe cache, wipe data
N still error remains, flash Stock ROM

I recently bricked my G1 (flashed radio after SPL, silly me), and I'm considering buying one with a cracked screen. I have no problem taking and it apart and what so, but if I were to place the screen of the bricked g1 on that of the cracked one...would this work? I don't think the bricking has anything to do with the screen, but I just want to make sure with this forum before I go ahead and purchase a G1 with a cracked screen.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll purchase a G1 with a cracked screen, and I'll begin taking apart my brick right now. I just didn't want to rush anything, in case this idea doesn't work.

I have one with broken screen but it has been open (myself) but it is working no problem and its running jf 1.5 can send you pics or a short video how much are you willing to pay for it ? just want to know if it's worth selling or i should keep it as a testing device I have 2 G1
I'm hoping not to go over $50, maybe a bit over with shipping. How much are you hoping to get for it? Also what color is it? It really doesn't matter, because mine is white, and I can replace just the screen, but it's easier to replace it with the casing. Let me know, thanks.

How bricked is bricked... what did you do, and what does it do now?
90% of "Bricked" phones are not really bricked....
Read through all of the "Bricked" threads before you attempt to "Break" your phone to fix it.

Sir I'm positive my G1 is bricked. I can't get into bootloader or recovery menu, none of the button commands work except for trackball + power, which turns on the blue light at the top, and no one knows what that's for.
Like I said, I was preparing my G1 to install SuperHero V2. I flashed the radio after the SPL, thus bricking my G1. It hangs at the first G1 splash screen. I've also read through plenty of bricked threads.
Bricked
If you are stuck at the G1 screen...
Press (at the same time) the end + menu + call buttons.
without releasing them, slide your finger from the call (green phone) button to the home button. release the menu button so you are holding the home and end key, the phone should vibrate. realease all buttons and the phone should go into recovery mode.
Let me know how it goes!
Well what I did was I booted to the G1 splash screen with the red button. THen I pressed red, green, and menu, let go of green and pressed home while still holding onto red and menu, then let go of menu. Nothing happened.
I also tried booting with red, green, and menu and doing the same.
Am I doing something wrong?

naah your doing nothing wrong he's just wasting your time i've told him that his method does not work with hard bricked phones but he just won't listen now he's aggravating you and making you think your doing something wrong. after 2 hour of seeing him bug you i had to tell you this. just ignore him he'll go away.
Yeah I figured it was probably a troll. But I was willing to go for anything with this useless phone of mine. Hopefully I can get a cracked screen G1 for cheap.
Sorry, accidental double post. Mods please delete.
Hey, I have been given a phone off a friend to fix but it wont turn on. Booting normally, I get a vibration and then the backlight comes on but i cannot see anything. When i try to boot into the bootloader by holding the camera button and powering it on, the backlight comes on but nothing else. I cannot see the bootloader. Under both circumstances, I cannot turn the phone off. I have to pull the battery to turn it off.
Does anyone have any suggestions about a possible fix? Thanks
Havie you tried send when trying to enter bootloader? If it resets then you can still get to bootloader. If not, your friend has soft bricked and only way is to JTAG which takes strong hardware knowledge and steady hands.

ok im having the exact same problem. actually i thought it was a battery problem so i spent 77$ on a 3700 mAh new batter i guess tripple life... and got it yesterday booted gave same problems. black screen where T-Mobile should be yet the rom loads with scribble screen meaning u see part but it looks like the pixels are messed up. so actually decided to resort to what someone told me a Factory Reset so Pressing Camera + Power i got a Black Backlight screen yet wont show... and I cant turn it off without Taking out the Battery this has become a issue after installing cyanogen 5.0.7 T5... since then i Re-rom'd to superbad 1.2.5 same problem screen scribbles and stops im thinking did I fry it i dont even know how to google my problem because its pretty unique it isnt a battery issue its something in the hardware ... or am I wrong please send us some feedback... ill keep this thread in mind
Sorry, what do you mean by 'send'. I am a complete noob when it comes to G1's. I have worked out i can shut off the phone by holding call + menu + end but thats it. I still cannot see anything at all on the screen. I still only get a vibration on boot. How would I know if the boot has been sucessful but i simply cannot see?
Could the flex ribbon cable be nackered?
hi guys
im using darkky's steel ROM on my galaxy since the last few days.. it was working perfectly..
last night i put in in for charging like i always do and when i see it in the morning the screen is continuously on with some strange white jumbled up screen which i havent seen before.
the phone doesnt switch off nor does it go into recovery mode nor does it go into download mode (it used to before be able to go into recovery or download mode).i need to pull out the battery for the phone to switch off.
each time i try the 3 button combo .. it comes back to that jumbled up white screen.
i havent tried connecting it to ODIN since i cant use 3 button anymore.
does it seem to be a hardware issue ?
please advise guys
thanks
IF you are unable to use 3 button, you could try to install adb (from the Android SDK) and connect the phone and try the following commands:
1) adb reboot recovery -> to go to recovery OR
2) adb reboot bootloader -> to go to download mode
Good luck!
Odin uses download mode to flash, but sounds like you have killed something in the bootloader, you have 2 options:
1)send it to Samsung and hope the don't kick you in the nut sack for breaking warranty, ending up in no fix or...
2)turn the phone off and insert the micro usb modded cable with a resistor over pin 4_===_5 301k resistor as described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
I flashed that rom and got the the very first screen when the phone turns on, 3 button went but download mode didn't, i flashed I9000XWJM8 and it came back to life, tried it again making sure lagfix was off and it done the same, needless to say I am back on docs jp6!!
good luck pal
@ashwinds: he cant run the commands unless the phone boots as both download mode and 3 button are disabled

Can you post a pic of the screen?
Also, when you remove the battery, then put it in, and try to go into revovert/boot, or try to start the phone, do you see ANYTHING else before the white screen?
hi
@kalpik will try to post a pic when i get home tonight.. nope dont get ANYTHING at all before the jumbled white screen.. just that.i just hope the guys at samsung dont reject my claim because of warranty violation issues.
@anarchyuk i wish i could try the method u u suggested.. but i really dont know anything about hardware stuff and am sure that i wont be able to do it.

If the white screen is the only thing you get, then i think its a hardware problem only.. Though Sasmung should fix it for you.. If they ask you about anything, just act dumb

see what samsung say, but if they do fail that method is not hard at all, as usb leads are only 4 pin and micro have 5, not all the micro pins have wires, other wise it would be a case of putting the resistor into the usb Male end!
Try this, it jas helped me get into recovery before when all appeared bricked (but didn't have a screen like yours).
- Remove battery
- Now press and hold the buttons you use to get into recovery
- While still holding the 3 buttons, insert the battery
Hopefully it boots up and/or ADB works.
So I used to have a G1 until last year, then I gave it to my friend. My friend returned it in broken. Seems like she dropped it a lot. [typical drunk college freshman ]
Anyways, I had an engineering SPL, recovery flashed, and biffmod or superd [wow brings back memories] on the phone.
The phone won't even boot. I press the power button, no LED backlight. I plug it in, no charging LED. I changed batteries, nothing. Can't get into bootloader/fastboot/adb/recovery.
Is this a brick that can be repaired or am I SOL?
Does it even come on?
It does not come on.
So you are saying camera+power, home+power, etc... will not take you anywhere?
What come up when you press those ket sequence?
Like I said, I am unable to boot into fastboot/recovery/normal boot. I don't even see the G1 logo. The LED back light doesn't even turn on.
I thought with a brick you're still able to see the G1 splash screen, so I don't know what to call this.
Looks like you have a black screen. Since you said that your friend drop it constantly it must have broken a wire or something that cause the screen to go black.
Bleh. So much for practicing cooking ROMs with that phone :[ thanks for your help!
Doesn't seem like a JTAG or whatever can fix this issue.
does the light go on when you charge it? or plug in a usb?
could be a dead battery..
From the first post
"The phone won't even boot. I press the power button, no LED backlight. I plug it in, no charging LED. I changed batteries, nothing. Can't get into bootloader/fastboot/adb/recovery."
any other suggestions?
well what im saying is maybe the battery is completely dead... did you try booting while plugged into a charger? lol stupid question mayb but im jus trying to cover all fields before we assume you have a brick
Lol. Like I said, I changed batteries. As in I replaced it with another one.
And yes, I did try booting with it charging, which is why I noticed there's no charging USB
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
ooo ok... dam that sucks, im not sure what else it could be. unless you dropped the phone a lot lol
Am I able to fix it with a JTAG? or is this kind of brick unfixable?
My screen broke yesterday, but the digitizer is fully working. I can unlock the phone and feel the vibrations from doing the pattern.
To be able to turn it in for service, I need to restore the kernel and remove root so my warranty isn't void. This really sucks.
I have my stock kernel, I havn't flashed any customs roms. I don't have usb-debugging enabled.
CWN is installed, so I should be able to boot into it and flash my stock kernel from there, but without a working screen I'm totally lost. So I would really need to have a full series of screens from CWM right up to the point where the new kernel is flashed. I can work out the navigation to the .zip if I just know how to get to the file listing I think.
Any suggestions on how to remove root?
Please help me =)
Hmmmm thinking logically, is the broken screen covered under warranty? If not then there is nothing to worry about. If you paying for it, you might as well have what ever you want.
are you sure that the warranty will cover the cost of broken screen
It is physical damage, so i guess the waranty is void, you will probably pay the full price for the screen, if you want it to be replaced

Not a 100% sure now, but I belive it might. There's no physical harm to it from the outside. I.e, no breakage or anothing like that. I think it's a connector somewhere behind it or something. I have had it in my inner pocket of my winterjacket and it might be due to the humidity from the warmth of my body. Hopefully, the warranty will cover it.
I have issues with the camera aswell, so I won't turn it in just for the screen issue. So, I was going to restore the kernel anyway to turn it in for the camera issue, but alas, I have procrastinated and now I have received the payment for it =).
Best to boot into download mode and flash a stock ics rom. As no screen, just follow.
Power off.
Hold the vol down + power + home for 10 secs
Wait for 5 secs
Press vol up.
Open odin on pc and connect the usb cable to both.
If there is a yellow indication.. Try flashing the rom.
They dont care about any mods u made to the software.
Theyll just plug it in and flash default firmware and wipe whatever is or was on your device.

Have been thinking about this aswell. Does that up my rom-counter or whatever? I don't know what it is, really, but I think it might be important? Otherwise I'll do just that!
flash a stock rom will not increase the counter nor cause a yellow triangle. but it wont help if its there already
Thanks for all the replys, I have finally flashed it with my stock rom. The strangest thing has happened though. I first thought I couldn't get into download mode from boot and I remember having been able to do it when it was powered on. So I powered it on, held the buttons down and lo and behold, the screen showed the download screen.
Very strange indeed. That's the only time I get to see any pixels lit on my display.
Anyways, I flashed the ROM and everything is still dead. So now it's time for service. I guess it's not some physical failure then.
Very strange indeed!
