Both of these have been completed by the seller I am purchasing my HTC G1 from. I intend to attempt to root, mod, etc. the device, but I'm in foreign waters. I have experience with the Tilt, but never Android based phones.
So my question is:
Is there anything I will have to do, or could easily do by mistake, that would result in losing my subsidy unlock and/or activation, requiring me to redo either?

If you have an actual subsidy unlock code then no matter what you do that code will never change.
If you want to root your G1 you should start by looking here: ***Informative Threads*** - Read before clicking "New Thread" [06/18]
During the process of rooting, will I lose my Subsidy Unlock? I don't actually have the code, it's being sold to me by someone on eBay who has already unlocked it.
I think I understand enough about the rooting process to tackle it, but I just don't gather whether or not the device will need the subsidy unlock code again after a wipe or the flash.

No. Once you unlock your phone it stays unlocked.

Very few, and I mean probably like 5% of all nexus one's can relock their bootloader. It's some special Holiday edition or something.
But as of right now, no you can't relock it.

Just out of curiousity, when you say "holiday edition", are you referring to the N1s given to Google employees before the phone was released, or is this just a clever way of acknowledging the good luck of those who got a re-lockable phone?
If the latter, is there any pattern by which one can recognise these phones (serial number, manufacturing date/facility, etc.), or is it just luck of the draw?

I'm not 100% sure but I believe "Holiday edition" refers to the special versions of the phones that have the battery cover with a QR code in it, as said QR code leads to a special holiday game when scanned on the Nexus One. Serial number can't be used to determine which Nexii (Nexuses?) can be relocked and which can't. The easiest way to tell if a Nexus One can be relocked is to power it off, hold the track ball, and power it on again. This boots into the bootloader where you will see on the second line something like "NEXUSONE PVT SHIP S-ON." 'S-ON' means that the bootloader can not be relocked while 'S-OFF' indicates a device can be easily be relocked by running a simple fastboot command from your computer, ''fastboot oem lock." I hope this answers your question.
I know the Nexus One has already been successfully rooted without unlocking the bootloader, but I still hope we can figure out a method for relocking the bootloader. I don't mean to scam warranty, I just hate that awful lock icon on the boot screen.

Shouldn't it be possible to simply flash the SPL from a re-lockable phone onto a phone that (before) couldn't?

Unfortunately, no this is not possible. Trying to do so would most likely lead to a bricked handset as the retail devices have a 512k spl and the engineering spl from holiday phones is 768k in size.

It will not brick the phone. It will work fine for what it's meant to do. Here's a quote from the page

Note that this does not re-lock the device which is what this thread is about. As of right now, there is no way that has been made publicly visible to relock the bootloader of an unlocked S-ON Nexus One. Maybe in the future there will be a way. I hope so, but for now, we're stuck. The method from the link can be used only to restore your phone to the stock ROM, so that you can once again receive OTA updates. It will take away your root priveleges, which I'd assume is the reason you've unlocked your device in the first place. So unless you're tired of being in control of your device, it's pointless.

I have a shipping S-OFF SPL, but apparently nothing can be done with it.
would be nice to see team unrevoked work on this......
I want to root again but am on 4.4.2 and can't do it.

I'll tell you this. If you don't do it exactly right, or take an ota anytime after, you may brick your phone. So make sure you know what what you are doing before you do it.

If possible just unlock your boot loader and fastboot flash what you need to root. I read on here earlier some Chinese dude had unlock codes. Not sure how legit it is but unlocking your bootloader is the safest way to root I'm my opinion

So far, it's been 100% legit as far as the codes working to unlock devices. The codes could stop anytime since no one knows where they are actually getting them from.

Even with an unlocked boot loader, you can not downgrade the boot loader from 4.4.2. No matter what version of the X you own, once you are on 4.4.2, you are stuck on 4.4.2.

Who needs to downgrade when all he was asking for was root? An unlocked bootloader will allow for you to flash a custom recovery and flash root or ROMs. If the the OPs only intention is downgrading the unlock codes are probably his best bet.

Yeah, but if you read the op you'd see the only reason he wants to go back is root. Thus I gave him a realistic way to achieve his goal.

For one I was responding to another poster who incorrectly told him he could just downgrade if he unlocked his boot loader. I wasn't replying to the OP, as evidenced by the fact I quoted the poster above me.
Secondly, with a locked boot loader, the only way to root was to downgrade to 4.2.2, use an exploit to root, then upgrade to 4.4. There is currently no way to root 4.4.2 without unlocking the boot loader.

That is the reason but his specific request was to downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2. When you said unlock and fast boot flash what you need, in the context of the thread it came across as you were saying he could downgrade with an unlocked boot loader. If the OP is new to Android, rooting, or the Moto X, then he could easily misinterpret what you were saying and end up bricking his device. You have to be clear when talking about rooting and unlocking.
If I misinterpreted your post, others easily have as well. However, the OP should have taken about ten seconds and searched for his answer before starting another thread that just muddies an already confusing issue.
Nothing I post is intended to hurt your feelings or call into question your knowledge. I just don't want people to break the devices they spend hard earned money on.

I would prefer NOT to void my warranty. But is this the only way to get root? I dont need a custom rom, etc. I just want root.

If your device is unlocked, then you should be able to use custom roms and such.
But if you want just basic root, try out TowelPieRoot. I am not sure if it works on 4.4.3, but it is confirmed to work on 4.4.2.
Please search around and read some guides next time, this information was already available from many resources in this forum!
Tried that. Says it successfully rooted but as far as I can tell it is not rooted.

Read through the threads. There are plenty of explanations and people in your position. If you do not have the patience to do so, then the current rooting methods probably won't be for you.
If your device is not a developer edition and you unlocked, I believe that means you already have voided the warranty.
Rooting with an unlocked bootloader doesn't require pie, etc, it's rather basic at this point, installing a custom recovery and installing supersu

I'm surprised nobody has stated this yet, but.......questions belong in the Q&A section. Please post to the correct sub-forums. See the second "sticky" thread at the top of the General Section.
Also, when you say unlocked, you ARE referring to bootloader-unlock, right? And not SIM-Unlock?
If so, the previous posters are absolutely correct. Your warranty is already toast. See the "One Stop Shop" rooting guide - it will point you in the correct direction.

I read through the forums for an hour and could not find a method for rooting that didn't require me to void my warranty which is why I posted the question. I am a programmer, but not a Android Programmer. I have no interest at this point in custom roms, etc. I just want root.

TowelPieRoot can be completely removed without a trace. We are pretty sure it doesn't void warranty.

I had a feeling you might have meant SIM-Unlock. This is completely unrelated to rooting, unfortunately.
If TowelPieRoot didn't work for you (DOWNLOAD A ROOT-CHECKER to be sure - find one in the play store. It will confirm if you have been rooted or not), sorry, but your ONLY option is to unlock the bootloader. There are mixed reports on whether or not TPR works on 4.4.3. Some variants apparently CAN use it, while others CAN'T.
Keep in mind that unlocking the BL is FAR superior to any of these exploits. You gain permanent root and wp-off.
The important question is which model you have. If you have the XT1053, you CAN unlock through Moto's official website. If not, you might not have any options at all unless you can get unlocked through the "china middleman".
If you have XT1053, your best bet is to go ahead and unlock the BL. Sure it will void your warranty, but I I really don't understand the fear of that. If you (for instance) break your device, warranty possibly won't cover it anyways if they determine it is "abuse" (e.g. you drop it). And aside from that there are very few things that can go wrong. All I can think of is the possibility of the screen going bad, or the speaker quitting working or something like that.....but there are extremely few reports of anyone actually needing to use warranty service.
Additionally, there are many reports of people who unlocked, and Moto honored the warranty anyways. I'm not going to suggest that they WOULD, but others have advised they did it for them.
Do what you want, but realize that if you want root, the ONLY option is to unlock.

If you don't want to void the warranty and have root access, buy a developer edition then sell your phone (or vice versa). That's the only way you'll be able to satisfy those 2 conditions.
I have to use pie root to get exposed working but I can confirm it works on 4.4.2 not sure about 4.4.3. I use the moto x tool kit to get pie root you can find it in the forums it's pretty easy

I have Z1 C6903 with root status "bootloader unlock allowed: no".
Is there any possible (safe/unsafe/other) way or method to change this to "yes" and to unlock my bootloader?

Majority of the posts i've read say this.
But, i've also read that if you can get your provider/operater to SIM unlock your phone (which i can for free), then you can contact sony by email, send them the sim unlock code wirh other relevant data, and if the data is correct and the code genuine, they pick up your phone and change the status to "yes" within 15 days, and return it back to you.
I'm trying to find out if thats true or just a rumor.

Yeah, i saw that thread already, but i dont see how using test pins is possible with the z1, as it doesnt have a temovable back cover or battery?
Please post your findings here, and i'll get a sim unlock code from my operator and then try to contact sony.
