Overheat and lag - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have noticed that when I run games such as Modern Combat 3 for a while my note starts to heat up. My S2 used to heat up a bit too. But once it's heated up the whole phone starts to lag. It feels like the CPU and GPU are throttling.
Once the phone cools down a bit, it starts speeding back up. This happens on stock speeds, OCed speeds, and even when underclocked and undervolted.
Happens on all of the kernels. I run on stock 2.3.6 rom with any of the custom kernels.
Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me?
EDIT: Or could it be it locks max FPS to 30?

I found this happened to me this morning, i tried MC3 for the first time and the phone was hot when i put it in my pocket.
My phone is retail stock no mods at all.

Same thing happens to me.
Every more demanding game makes my Note heat a lot, and then I start to face slowdowns. The last game that I saw making this was Baseball Superstar 2012.
Completely stock.

It's meant to happen. There is code in the kernel to avoid frying the CPU. It downclocks the CPU when too hot. It appears the gpu does not downclock from the code. Be careful when overclocking. I don't think the overclock frequencies are included in the code.

I have the overheating issue as well, or at least it feels unusually warm (which is foreign and new to me) when I play games like Zenonia 4 which is extremely sharp and appears to be made for HD screens.
I'm a little unnerved by how hot the phone got the first time when I played it for 45 minutes that now I never play more than 20 minutes in a sitting and learn to space out my gaming.
If it as you say, is there a chance that the increased heat for a prolonged duration could permanently damage the gpu?

Had the same problem too....sometimes when the phone is hot, theres a delay between making calls and the phone actually dialling. For info i'm on standard kl3 rom rooted with cf kernel. Phone is on on demand gov standard speed 1.4ghz. Appreciate any help...thanks.
I'm running Abyss 2.3, 100 - 1400 with Smartass V2 Governor. And it works fantastic I must say. You might wanna try a new Kernel FM 1.5 or Abyss 2.3
It's normal for the CPU to warm up when you're playing games and anything causing the CPU to run at max for a long time.
Install CPU Spy from the market and make sure you're phone goes into deep sleep and monitor the other frequencies as well.
After installing new roms or kernels the phone usually gets warm as well. Just reboot and it should be okay after a couple of minutes. That's what I experienced on my Note
Mine is completely stock... Haven't even installed 3 apps yet. The phone is never in a case and the heat appears to originate from the camera area any thoughts or ideas or am I just over reacting?
Btw the phone doesn't slow down or act different operationally just gets warm lol
below 20% of battery power any device getting hot.
plus maybe you making hard time to processor
naw the phone is at 80 percent as well :/ i think im just over thinking lol the phone is operating like a champ just want to make sure its nothing serious
Mine gets pretty hot in same area wen playing games, its just the processor heating up, sure it for force close the app, if it couldn't handle it!
Yeah.. Any processor will get hot when running. Remember there's nothing to keep it cool! So I think if you put it on your cheek and it stings after a while there may be a problem. Otherwise it's pretty normal for the Note.

Nexus 4 definitely throttles during gaming, unplayable!

I don't know if people are BSing on here and in the gaming thread about how their N4's do not throttle when playing graphic intensive games or if my device is defective but..
My Nexus 4 DEFINITELY throttles down to a point where games are almost unplayable.
My favorite game at the moment, Need for Speed Most Wanted.
This game is pretty graphic intensive for a mobile device I would say. Upon first start up when the device is generally cool, frame rates are good and smooth for the most part. NFS Most Wanted frame rates seem to be about 25-30fps.
After about 4 or 5 racing events, which I would say is about 20 minutes or so of playing the back of the Nexus 4 gets warm (not hot) just warm to the touch and frame rates takes a nose dive. I would say it would be in the 10-15fps range.
I have tried it with my completely stock device, then rooted with Franco's kernel, Faux's Kernel, Matr1x Kernel, tried different GPU frequencies, OC'd all the way up to 487MHz with Faux's Kernel and it makes no difference between stock and oc'd. It ALL THROTTLES after about 20 minutes of playing.
Other than gaming, the device is blistering fast in all other areas, I have not found any hiccup at all in any UI interaction. I think Google designed to phone to handle general use with aplomb, it's truely one of the smoothest Android if not THE smoothest I have experience.
Unfortunately once this thing heats up only a little bit, gaming performance for me takes a big hit.
Try the new "bricked" kernel .. He changed the thermald file ... Should stop throttling .
don't take notice of the name Lol

Will give it shot, thank you sir.:good:
OP keep us updated please
bricked kernel... set all cores to @ 1Ghz by forceing all cores on in boot settings with the app 'system tuner'... also set governor to performance
this should keep the game running nice without over heating.
Yeah, I definitely notice the same when playing graphic intensive games. The GPU just clocks down itself to 200MHz when playing games.
EDIT: I just read your experience with the Bricked kernel. I am glad you got it fixed. By the way, did you try playing games with the kernel?

[Q] Is xperia T good for heavy 3d gaming?

Hi im thinking of buying a nice phone for playing games is xperia t right thing. How are games like modern combat 4 , nfs most wanted, spiderman, dark knight rises running on this device . Plz give a quick response
Out of the box, it works OK until it gets hot. There have been numerous threads about thermal throttling kicking in after a while and killing performance - do a search rather than creating an 'urgent' new thread next time.
Having said that, if you are prepared to root then this thread may keep your performance up:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1937329
This phone gets HOT when playing games? i thought its 28nm cpu will stay cool. Should i buy xperia T or should i buy htc one XL for gaming
by the way i researched alot and could not find a similar threat.
Most new phones have some sort of heat issue and thermal throttling. I would recommend trying the games on the handsets to see exactly what you feel about it.
Sent from my Xperia T using Tapatalk 2
I am running now at 192 - 1458MHz, both cores always on, when the heat is going over about 65°C, CPU is throttled to 1188MHz (and less), still with both cores on. When I am gaming a little longer, CPU temperature is going up to 75°C and battery temperature does not exceed 50°C while connected to wall charger.
All games I know are running smoothly this way.
These temperatures should be fine. If anything goes wrong with these temperatures, then it's a bad device.
Thing that is low on T, is RAM. I would recommend something with 2GB. I believe there will be games with 2GB requirement soon. And T has only 640MB available RAM for applications. And system is using about 300 - 400MB. The rest of RAM is low even for browser and low for future gaming, at least now in ICS.
And internal memory chip has not very good performance. For example SenseMe Slideshow (plastic frames) never makes smooth slideshow. Opening phone or SMS app takes almost 2 seconds. Opening NFS Most Wanted takes about 15 seconds (and this procedure kills all opened apps, very nice. Etc.
I am not telling it's a bad device, I like it (except wifi, that one drives me mad. But I recommend something else for heavy gaming.

Out of curiosity, ¿what rom/kernel combo are you using?. I'm interested in undervolting and underclocking my device.
I used Siyah kernel while I was on Timin8r's stock rom, but now I'm running AOKP and I don't know any current kernel compatible with that.
Siah kernel, but works on stock kernel too (except 192MHz). Values are changed manually.
i have already ordered the Xperia T But hope that it will not dissapoint me Devices with 2GB are out of my reach and in my country i found xperia T the fastest in my current budget
You won't be disappointed. It is good device. But has some disadvantages. Just like other devices.

Its got f*** all to do with ram. 1gig is enough. We get full effects like the galaxy s3, and as mentioned in earlier comments adjusting the throttling works wonders. This game never lags for me.

Gameloft have started adding graphics setting to their games which is a good move, so I imagine MC5 will have them. Dunno about dead trigger 2 but they normally optimize their games well. I have a lot of games, they all work fine after reducing the thermal throttling. Only problems you might face is games being unavailable such as a few flu titles, but device spoofing takes care of that. My phone sometimes shuts down from online gaming because the battery can't take the stress, but as long as the throttle allows 12420000 or lower it rarely happens unless battery is low. Plus a friend is trying to make a fix for it, by putting out a voltage based on averages, rather than having a voltage that is too high then it dropping too low under pressure . Also its the same chip as USA version of GS3

Dead Trigger 1 plays smooth on my Cortex A5 800Mhz and Adreno 200. :\ Few lags here and there but nothing noticeable... I think this will handle Dead Trigger 2... Subway Surfers lags like hell though.
How about N.O.V.A 3 and MC4? I just worry about constant non-playable frame rates. I can't judge by YouTube. Do you get smooth experience with Adreno 225?

[Q] Max Battery and CPU temperature limit for Xperia TX while HD gaming

Specially while playing HD games like Modern Combat 4, The Dark Knight Rises, N.O.V.A 4 etc..............
My phone doesn't get hot more then 38-40 *C even after half and hour of HD gaming.
But I still want to know exactly what might be the max CPU and Battery Temperature limit?
Thank you.
I have T, but it's very similar phone.
The limit for the battery is around 60°C and for CPU it's around 100°C. Every temperature beyond the limit causes the phone to shut down.
Of course it's a softwate feature and you can disable this by deleting sysmon.cfg file in /system/etc but it's highly dangerous and completely unrecommended.
Hope this helps you!

i don't think you have to start a new thread to ask other question, just ask in your previous thread.
and tx(all xperia maybe) have some overheating control app in system that monitoring the thermal of the device ..you don't need to worry about it

Thank you very much. I don't worry about the temperature. But when HD gaming, i'm a little worried about the screen, cuz it gets hot too. I hope the temperature won't do any harm to my TX's screen.
I think the T and TX housing is too close to the Processor that's why it gets a little hotter rather then other phone. :cyclops:
Don't worry about the screen. It will be ok but remember not to heat your phone for a very long time because then it may damage.
Besides just take a look at PC's LCD monitors. Touch it and you will see it's pretty warm too It's normal.
And the last thing - the brighter your screen is, the faster your phone gets hot!

Thnaks for ur help. My Xperia TX never gets hot or even a little warm while Charging, Seeing Movie or Browsing. Just gets hot when high HD gaming. I am a Android game lover.
So can you tell me some ways to keep my Xperia TX as cool as possible while HD gaming.
Yes, here are some things I keep on using:
1. Lower screen's brightness when you don't need to have it bright.
2. Don't play while charging.
3. Downclock your CPU - f.e. from 1,5 GHz to 1,1 or 1,2 (don't use 1,0 GHz on JB because your phone will start to lag!). The games will still run and very good speed. In fact I don't see any differences between 1,5 GHz and 1,2 GHz especially in games like Modern Combat 4, Carmageddon etc. Your CPU will start to heat much slower.
4. Undervolt your CPU.
5. Don't play with any case etc. Another thing that "helpes" the heat not to escape out of your phone.
My setup is JB 9.1.A.0.140, 1,2 GHz, Ondemand, CFQ, UV -75mV.

I think the heating issue is common in all modern smartphones. I used HTC Smartphone like HTC Evo 3D, HTC Desire HD but they never gets hot no matter what you do with the phone. Even after hours of gaming battery temperature shows maximum 31-32 *C.
Thank you again mate.
Well that's pretty interesting
Maybe yhese smartphones have pretty big space between the CPU and the battery so even when the CPU heats up it does not heat the battery.
On the Xperia T it's very close to the battery and not covered with any radiator or a piece of metal etc so the heat can easily "access" the battery and heat it up.

What is temperature limit for xperia m4? I ask because it becomes hot even when i play hill climb racing.

avoiding thermal throttling?

When i play games like moderncombat5 i have 60fps but after a while the frames drop in some scenes where it didnt 3-5 minutes ago. When i check the cpu/gpu i can see that it throttles and causes these framedrops. But the phone doesnt get hot. Since it isnt possible to mess with thermal values at the moment. I wonder if there are some optimal cpu/gpu clocks where it will not throttle and performance will stay the same all time regardless of how much you stress the cpu/gpu. Because i'd rather have a underclocked cpu gpu than having thermal throttling while stressing the phone. On oneplus3 i didnt have this much thermal throttling playing mc5. I also feel the thermal throttling throttles way to early.
And yes i tried almost all kernels/roms out there it was a better experience on the op3
Thanks!
All CPUs have slight variations, some may be slightly more efficient than others of the same model. To get the best performance, you're going to have to underclock and test on your own phone bit by bit.

I dont remember. But it was hard to find. Anyways i found out that the cpu allways throttles down to little 1209 mhz and big 1440 mhz. When gpu is running on max clock. Will make further investigations now to find perfect cpu & gpu freq.
It seems regardless of what cpu profile / governor you use and regardless if the phone is charging or not. The cpu will allways throttle down to 1209 little and 1440 big. And the gpu also throttles but i can't monitor the exact values currently. This throttling even happens when gpu is running on min freq. And even when you set big or little cluster to min freq.
Im pretty sure the thermal throttling of the oneplus3 is broken. Because:
Thermal throttling should be decided by many factors. (General soc heat generated by gpu/cpu/and ram) also the system should be aware by the values and should handle it intelligently.)
It seems there is only one heatsensor used to throttle all at once and the throttling stops at 1209mhz little and 1440mhz big. If the temperature still rises the phone simply doesnt give a f*** why i think there isnt even a point of using this stock throttling method. And no its not accurate. And no its not usefull because, it throttles regardless what heat the phone has. Because it doesnt react to soc heat. It reacts to one of the components and throttles everything. Why it can't check the other temparatures aswell and throttle other components diffrently if even needed at all.
Issue: lets say little or big cluster is overheating because the cpu load is very high on it. (And no you wont see this throttling by simply running perf gov. It needs load/ working tasks on it, means you gotta play some heavy 3d games)
The thermal throttling just brakes down both clusters including the gpu. Was the big cluster or the gpu running cool? The thermal throttling doesn't give a f***. Could the loads/tasks been shared with or pushed to the big cluster. Thermal values dont care. Could some rly simple sort of hotplug turn the overhating little cluster off to let the big cluster do the rest before it rather throttles everything on the f... phone . -nope - Its annoying. Rly just try it out yourself. I really hope to see some improvements by oneplus. And no the phone is not bad at all. It's just some things are not optimized yet. Like touch latency which is worse than on galaxy s3 but i don't mind it just giving you an example so you can imagine how bad the thermal throttling must be.
Allways remember setting the cpu clock values so low that they dont throttle anymore doesnt mean gpu will throttle less often. All compenents will throttle without comparing other compents clock rate and heat.
My question: is the thermal throttling decided by the soc itself or are there different thermal throttling values on each phone brand using sd821?
And is it possible to port these values from lets say pixel phone?
I'm on cm13 and its kernel default is a bit lower than stock. I had the screen on full brightness and was charging the battery so temps above 100°. I played dead trigger 2 on highest settings on a level with lots of special effects and weapons with lots of splatter. Got throttled when the temp hit 103° everytime. I was running performance on cpu and gpu and i tested it without charging and still get throttled.

Im using laos 14.1 with latest ex kernel.
As is said thermal values are broken. Its not right to throttle down to same speed if charger is plugged as battery heat is higher and soc heat should be higher too. So i think it also throttles unnecesserily low without the charger being plugged.
Did any one find a solution to fix this?
Up up up
years of tired because of this ****ting throttling issue
Well do this at your own risk, go to system/vendor/bin and cut the file named "thermal-engine" to other directories in your sd card. This will completely disable thermal throttling. Perfect for gaming.?
Up up!!! This issues persists to me.. i even put my oneplus 3t in front of 8" fan for every gaming. Is there anyway to maintain the cpu frequency at higher rate during thermal throttling? I don't want to totally disable the thermal throttling... Seems unsafe... Enlighten me if you would
I think its time for gamer's to switch to a gaming oriented phone to avoid this thermal throttling and im looking forward to buy Black Shark which is Xiaomi backed gaming phone with custom rom (not miui) something different and that too is gaming focused hopefully it will be available globally soon ! :fingers-crossed:

There is no risk if you disable thermal throttling, the CPU will shut itself down if its temperature reaches 100°C

There's nothing you can do about the throtting, OP3T throttles @60°C tbh in just 10 mins of game play it starts throtting
You have 2 options here
1. Either disable thermal engine as suggested by someone above ( it basically boils your device forget about gaming, temps touchs to 98°C if msm thermal is disabled and around 60 to 75°c it msm thermal is enabled it's seriously hot to touch and high chances of damaging internals
2. Underclock the big cluster to 1209MHz or 1286MHz I tested both, while gaming (2 hrs of pubg @ medium settings) temp's are around 53 to 55°c and never reached 60°c no throtting ( but you know what, games still lag or you will get low fps due to lack of power Lol I'm sorry that's true there nothing you can do about it try playing games in air conditioned room or just buy gaming Phone like Razer they have good heat dissipation, you should not forget the fact that our device is 2 years old. Tbh on a 2 year old phones even optimized games too use lot of processing power which lead more heat. More heat = throttle
