apple spamming thousands due to huge flaw in iOS - Off-topic

http://www.nerdalerts.net/?p=527
disclaimer: i did write the article - but it's still a HUGE issue. i got literally 50-some texts within a half hour...
it appears that if ANY ios user adds you to a group message, you're at the mercy of the rest of the people in the group. you don't stop getting messages until they stop replying (or, if the originator of the message removes you - but i'm not even sure if they can do that since i don't have an iphone).

we have enough ad problems, we don't need iOS's garbage.

i almost had to turn my phone off...it was preventing me from getting anything done.

ios news goes into off topic or on our sister site iphonedevs

this isn't just ios news, it's relevant to all mobile phones. ANY user that doesn't have an iphone can get caught in this trap. that's why i posted it here.
as i mentioned in the article, it really could be a disaster if someone gets included that doesn't have a text plan and pays per message...

Do you mean to call it a feature present in just about every email application? Nice thread title, very accurate.

"this is something that needs to be addressed by apple IMMEDIATELY."
Or maybe this needs to be addressed with your friends who include you in these messages.
:Hits reply-all:

i don't think you're understanding how iphone group messaging works - there is no "reply all" button. if one person starts a group message, the other people with iphones get that message as a single thread. they can't just reply to one user. any reply goes to the entire group - INCLUDING the non-iphone users.
THAT is the problem.

I understand. I was just comparing it to standard email threads.
I'd still call this a stupid user (your friend) problem. Tell your friends to stop including you in these silly group messages if it bothers you.

i did that, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a bug.
what if someone with an iphone sends out a group message to 100 people, and doesn't use contacts for a few of them (rather types the number in)...and mis-types it. now some random person is getting hundreds of replies to a group message he had nothing to do with - AND getting charged for all of the messages on top of it.
the fact that apple included this as an option in ios means it should work without the user doing anything but using it. it shouldn't be up to the user who starts the message to have to check if the user on the other end is an iphone user...apple already does this check when it sends texts via iMessage, it should be doing the same check for group messaging.

Okay this is my attempt at explaining everything at once, You see there is a problem, there is wizard who controls the world day & night and he has nothing better to do than to get developers to develop new software and everyday he switches them up like gloves. He's got a block on the skyways, the metro system, atm machines. Even your phone & international communications satellites. As you may beginning to understand, that this smart-chip is controlling everything from newscasts to the ethanol boom. Nobody is anybody and the cellphone has global control. I'm merely the wizard behind the magic, why? Because I was the first to put pen to paper. Then I went to mighty mount ararat and Found Two tablet PCs but when I got down and noticed everyone was using mac to edit "Artistic Nude" photos of their wives and daughter I decended upon them with a grave vengence. And only those that are traveling in my Arc will ever be saved.
In conclusion this phone does much more than control my schedule, it controls the world. It will change history.

What's the difference between General and Q&A?
i would imagine one is for general Nexus One information (touchscreen issues, USB Driver info)
while this one is for Q&A - where do i plug it in to charge it, can i use a stylus, can i root it, things of the like.
Yes, and for gathering How-To's, guides and the sort.
I think its a conspiracy by the small douche sect of xda trying to create more opportunities to berate people for not using the search function or posting in the wrong forum. Hey I guess if people don't have a purpose in life we can't blame them for trying to create one. To each his own right? Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum...
Don't know if you're just trolling but there are separate sections and a search function for a reason: so that people aren't asking the same questions ( that have already been answered) over and over again.
The other reason is that clear categories/sub-forums help you find the correct information faster.
I like the new layout because if I want to know about apps/themes, there's a forum.
If you're too stupid to figure out the different between Q&A, Development, Accessories, Theme/Apps, and General Questions, should you really be on a modding/hacking forum?

The Wall Street Journal is of course more reputable, but I like the first article better since it has more detail and informative graphs:
---------------
Apple, if they needed a reason to go after HTC, and by proxy Google, may have had it in marketshare numbers. Android's growth has been pretty spectacular over the past few quarters highlighted by the graphs below from Quantcast, a web analytics firm.

While iPhone is clearly the market leader in Web consumption with over four times the share as Android, its nearest competitor, recent trends show that they aren't standing on firm ground.
In the last month the iPhone has lost 3.2% of its marketshare compared with RIM and Android both gaining considerably. This isn't just a monthly blip either, at least with regards to Android. Google's phone market has grown 44% over the past quarter and almost doubled over the past year while the iPhone has lost around 5% and 10% of the overall market over those same periods.
The iPhone is still gaining users and pageviews, Android is just gaining so much faster.
According to some sources, Steve Jobs recently told an Apple Town Hall meeting:
On Google: We did not enter the search business, Jobs said. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them, he says. Someone else asks something on a different topic, but there’s no getting Jobs off this rant. I want to go back to that other question first and say one more thing, he says. This don’t be evil mantra: “It’s BS.” Audience roars.

Scary....device used by police can scan your cellphone

I hope our Vibrants aren't one of the 3000 that can be scanned by this!

After briefly searching the manufacturers website it does look like our phone is on the list..... However, looks like the only way they can suck out the data (pictures, SMS, sim contents, browser cache, etc) is via a cable. (not wirelessly like some other phones)

Their brochure even says they can retrieve deleted information and geo stats of where you have been!
We don't do this in my city or in any of my neighboring cities.
It is a violation of the 4th admendment.
What would be the point of this?
I fail to see how they would benefit. Especially when it may not hold up in court.

Some of these claims sound a bit like "marketing speak".
Not all the things it claims to do will work on all devices. I reckon that one device might support the dumping of GPS stuff (iPhone perhaps given the recent news headlines? ) (btw I'm joking about the iPhone).
all phones sold after ~2002 must be able to do it in compliance with the freedom of information act introduced in 2001

If you willingly give up your phone to be scanned, even if you got nothing to hide, you've waivered your 4th Amendment Rights. Any and all information can and will be used against you as I have yet to meet a cop who didn't treat the average citizen as guilty till proven guilty. Accessing your phone data is like data mining your facebook page and more looking for anything suspicious about your character which could give them "probable cause" for other things. Got pics of you and your friends partying? Now they have a reason to administer the drunk driver test and/or a breathalizer. Got pics of you and your dad hunting? Now they're going to detain you and search you car for guns (they'd do that here in NJ). Your gps data shows you doing 5 or 10mph over the speed limit? Instant speeding ticket. Time stamps on your SMS messages coincide while you where driving (even if you had a passanger using your phone its still your phone) instant moving violation.
That's the whole point to this, to find probable cause in order to convict people of crimes. There is only two ways to thwart this: do not consent to a warrentless search and keep your data encrypted to protect yourself from a forced warrentless search.

Not really. (at least in New Jersey) if you have that point of view there is good reason for it. In some of the quieter counties (Sussex, Warren ect) the cops actually have been known to do this kind of stuff. In Hudson county (where I live) it's less likely but not unheard of.

I feel sorry for our friends across the pond. The police state of America is becoming less like the land of the free and more like an Orwellian novel with every day that passes.
Ben Franklin wrote, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
I'm not originally from the US but based on what I'm seeing today, policemen here are way better than my previous home. In my previous country it's all about money, when you have a violation about traffic they'll get money from you and put it directly to their pockets.
If you don't give them money they'll found a way to get you arrested, the worst thing that they can do is secretly put prohibited drugs inside your car without you knowing it then accuse you with that. A very sad thing but it is true, good thing is I now live in the US.

I read it earlier. Seems like a horrible review from an Apple fanboi.
I stopped reading about three sentences in when this "journalist" referred to it as the Galaxy 7.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
holy bias batmam!
This guy isn't a real journalist thankfully. He's a Grade-A dumbass though, stating flat out that the 'iPad Mini' is coming out in October. He has no credibility and this poorly-written article reflects that. Guess that's why he's stuck writing **** for examiner.
His "review" is basically the exact opposite of what literally everyone else is saying.
Where do they find their writers?
Lol he said Jelly bean is clunky... then tells us to wait for the Ipad mini. Smh lol.
You can tell its a fanboy article also from the viewing angle comment. I never once had a crowd of people around me going man "only if your tablet had a 85 degree viewing angle". Simple case of haters gonna hate
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
The Nexus 7 includes a 1.2MP front-facing camera. However, there is one main issue—there are currently no apps to take advantage of the camera.
Whaaaat? Did something happen to Hangouts, Google Talk Video Chat, Skype, and every other video chat app? And the plain old camera app can use the front camera can't it? Face unlock.......
What a deluded fellow we have here!
person is probably referring to stock without any added apps
but of course, probably wants to be spoon-fed a camera app
Obviously he doesn't like it, which is fine. But besides the tone which seems dismissive its also just poorly written. It's like a bad forum post. In closing, I wish I didn't encourage this crappy publication by clicking your linkbait
This is the typical iSheep review of any Android device, no matter how good it really is. Even the pictures he took / published are slightly out of focus to add a bit more drama to his pathetic article.
Oh well...
I have to disagree with everything he said apart from the lack of a SD card reader and that the home screen doesn't rotate
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
How are these people allowed to write such "drivel" (could use more colourful language but i'd be banned)....the nexus 7 specs outperform 90% of android tablets out there yet this imbecile is saying "if people did 10 minutes of homework they'd find the samsung galaxy tab 7 is better"......wow.
Not to mention in his first 3 lines he says "Google's new tablet has a less than spectacular screen, a clunky operating system and a lack of storage options" unless your fingers are concrete without any feeling of how to use an operating system then maybe, otherwise the rest of your review is doomed
Guys hiring this lunatic...take a look at the verge, unbiased and solely focusing on the product and not the competition.
iPAD mini??? there's only rumors and not an announcement unless you suddenly became a spokesperson for Apple, that said you wouldn't be reviewing this tablet and we wouldn't have to read your jibberish you looney
The examiner is pretty much worthless because most of their writers are hired online with very little vetting and (if I remember correctly, but I'm not 100% sure) they get paid per view. I have a friend who writes for them (political articles). Nice person, but she majored in music education and can't write a cohesive sentence to save her life.

It's a shame there's no comment section for feedback on that dude. Awful writing, terrible bias, and a clear lack of understanding of how to operate an Android tablet.
Bottom line, there's a reason Apple puts a wall around their garden... not only to keep the outside world out, but to keep their fanbois in. He'll be much better off feeling happy when Apple tells him to.

Looks like your kid was trying to say "I can talk to it" or something?
Kids voices are not developed enough for the speech recognition. Heavy breathing, poor intonation and of course a kids voice sounds nothing like an adults.
There is a "don't recognise swear words" setting somewhere I saw. It might remove the word Ass which was probably obtained from a breath or squeal or similar aspirated sound. Not sure. Google also has a PG search if you want to lock it down more.
At 2 though he is unlikely to be able to really read it and if he could is too young to understand. As a parent myself I wouldn't worry, I am more likely to have laughed in fact.

Yes didn't expect it to pick his speech up clearly but it does very well and picks up around 40% of his words. It did make me laugh and I'm not worried just thought it was quite bizarre lol. I can't pick up my Nexus without him asking to talk to Google lol.
Block offensive words is a search setting option.

I don't think a 2-year old's voice was high on the engineers list when designing Google Now. What do you expect when leaving your child to play with internet searches. You are lucky that it didn't return some photos of anal sex.

hehe! I do know what you mean.
Does the list of offensive words that googles speech recognition block include ass? I wouldn't think it would block ass as the word itself isn't that offensive, however in the context that it thought your son said, that would be much more offensive and disturbing. Google Now needs an option to block "offensive context"
Besides, I think the option is checked automatically

Because of this thread, right now, somewhere in the Google X Labs building, a group of children are being gathered. :silly:
This thread is full of win.

If you want to see somehing even more amusing, turn ON 'block offensive words' and do a search for "****". Make sure you say it clearly.
I got a kick out of that.

Personally, I think letting a 2 year old anywhere the internet is asking for trouble.
