Noob Question?

so I got a samsung galaxy s captivate SHG-I896 from rogers and I really want to root it, i have z4root installed, but im hesitating. because i dont want to brick my phone, i have had an apple device, jailbroke a bunch, no problems of brick but android is a whole different story, so i would appreciate a few pointers, sorry for posting such a noobish question

Not sure about the Rogers version, but with the 897, if anything goes wrong, ODIN will return it to factory.

I have the Rogers Captivate as well, I was a little hesitant before I did it too but myself and a bunch of my friends that have the phone have done it with no issues at all. Do the permanent root, if it freezes then just pull the battery, reboot and try again. It took me at least twice to root it but it's remarkably easy. If anything really major goes wrong you can always boot to recovery and wipe data but I seriously doubt you'll need to. I'm just speaking from experience so don't blame me if anything buggers it up but to be honest it's not as easy to brick it as you might think.

Should:
- Get Titanium Backup and batch backup everything. This app will make your life so much easier and hassle free.
- Also, just be careful and don't go crazy with installing stuff you don't know about. Do your due diligence before flashing anything or installing any app or lag fix. Figure out exactly how it's done before you do it. This might sound basic and common sense but from the short time I've been here I've seen a fair few people complain of bricking their phone just because they didn't follow directions that were pretty clear from the onset.

im looking around the forums so, i copied this from the darky rom post:
HOW TO FLASH
1. Place the ROM on the root of your SD card.
2. Backup your apps using Titanium Backup.
3. Open ROM Manager (Downloadable from the market)
4. Choose "Install ROM from SD card". If after you flash and you have problems like force closes and you can't receive calls, wipe data/cache.
5. Let the phone sit for 5-10 minutes after booting.
6. Have fun!
is that all u have to do? no holding buttons and booting into some menu?
also will these roms work for 2.1 rogers version captivate? Because i checked on the wiki for the captivate rogers version and it said something about "optionally change the model in the update-script from SGH-i897 to SGH-i896"

I'm not the best person to ask about this unfortunately but from what I've read this is definitely one way to flash a new rom. Whether you're currently on 2.1 seems to be irrelevant as the rom will act as your new version of Android as it were.
A few things I've read, make sure you have access to both recovery and download modes, if anything happens you'll probably need to flash back with Odin so learn more about that before you proceed.

I haven't flashed because, and this sounds strange, I don't actually have access to a computer at my house so I can't use Odin as easily to fix any issues that might occur so I haven't tried yet.

I know this will make me sound like a complete noob but it doesnt matter. Any help or any pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
I have a stock motorola milestone 2.2.1. I hate it and have read how stable some of the roms are and I would love to experiment with them. However, never having a windows phone or an HTC before I have no idea how to do this with minimizing the risk.
So I have rooted my phone with universalandroot and have installed rom manager and titanium backup. Unfortunately, I read that rom manager wont work with the Milestone.
All of the threads on boot recovery and other methods seem to differentiate from one another. Is there a safeR method. I know no method is safe. What programs do I need to install on my computer and or my phone for this to work?
I know this a lot and I truly appreciate any help and support from this forum.

First of all, ROM Manager does not work with the milestone. So please remove it and dont ever install Clockworkmod recovery on the milestone.
Second, What ROM do you want to install?
You need Androidiani Openrecovery for all your flashing needs of customs ROMS. You will need rsdlite to flash sbf files and offcourse the Moto usb drivers. Check the sticky threads in the development section. There are many tutorials.

This is easily one of the best ways to get everything done in the way of flashing a custom ROM.

Depending on which ROM you want to install, it will determine what you need to download.
After rooting the phone, you will want to flash a vulnerable recovery sbf via RSD Lite, as shown in that thread the VR you should use will depend on your bootloader version. If you are running 90.78, then you can flash this VR: http://android.doshaska.net/rootable
After that happens, you can create a backup of all of your apps using TitaniumBackup.
Once you do that you want to place OpenRecovery(AOR) on your SD Card. Follow the steps from the first link I posted to get that on. You will want to place the custom ROM that you want into OpenRecovery/updates. If you are planning on using CM7, you will also need to download google apps from the CM7 thread here.
Once that is on, you will want to boot into recovery(power+x, see the Moto M logo, then release and push camera button+volume up), apply update.zip.
From there you want to select the Nandroid menu with the d-pad. Create a nandroid backup of what you want.
Now is the crucial step. You need to wipe the caches and ALL data. Choose wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache partition and wipe data/factory reset.
Now is time to apply your custom ROM!
It is recommended to create a nandroid backup everytime you flash a custom ROM, in case of anything going wrong.
Navigate to apply update in AOR, select the ROM that you want, select yes. Once it is done installing, wipe the caches and data AGAIN.
If you are installing the google apps, you will want to wipe the caches, flash the google apps, then wipe the caches again.
You will probably have to apply the baseband for your carrier, so you will need to navigate to change baseband, and apply the baseband for your carrier.
If you followed those steps, you should have a brand spanking new custom ROM on your phone.

Newbie Here :-) MIUI Question!

Hi Forum
I'm still a newbie in all this android business, I try to read as many threads as possible before asking questions, however I just read A LOT about this MIUI, and people said there was released one for Optimus 2X? I just can't find it anywhere on the MIUI site.
Also if I do want this, how do I go about installing it? Can something go bad? I just don't want to brick my phone as I was close to doing so when I was playing around with flashing my SE phones
Help would be greatly appreciated

Hi, you might wanna start and flash CyanogenMod first, also that is the best path to MIUI since the whole structure of MIUI for O2X is CM7. So go ahead to the CM7 thread and follow the guide there (I believe there is one).
I can't however tell you that not everything will go OK, since I don't know what knowledge do you have, but just be careful and everything will go great.
As for the MIUI installation it is somewhere in the only miui Thread at the moment in the development section.

I found the link, but what is the process? I understand I have to install RomManager, then clockworkrecovery, place the miui .zip on my SD card (only got internal, is that ok?), boot into recovery, "install from zip"

External is needed if I'm right someone may be able to back me up with that but basically use rom manager to flash clockwork mod recovery (cwm). Use volume buttons to move up and down Recovery menu and power button to select, it's recommended to make a nandroid backup before flashing so you always have an go back to how it was if anything goes wrong. Next step after backup is to factory reset, wipe cache partition, go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache and battery stats. Now go to install zip from sd card and then choose zip from sd card and select your rom and flash and reboot. I'm new to this also so hope this helps.

The zip file is no problem, are you sure about the external SD thing tho? I don't have one

Wrong ! There are 2 versions of CWM. One for external and one for internal.
Go to dev section and search

As others have said, start with cyanogen to "cut you teeth" and then you can move to the MIUI ROM

MIUIUIUIUIUI is *dogshite* awful, but the installation process still remains the same. Flash zip. You do not need an external SD, you just need to read a bit more on recovery mounts.
Personally, CYANOGENMOD ALL THE WAY.

But what is the point installing cynagenmod and then installing MIUI right after?

the current MIUI for o2x is based off CM7.

But wouldn't it be the same as installing it from Stock in comparison to installing it from CM, won't I have to wipe and factory everything anyway?

if you are concern about bricking i suggest u make a nandroid backup or have another working rom on your sdcard. other than that process is the same.

Is there any way to do this without internet connection on my phone? My carrier stopped my internet connection because I forgot a bill I can't get rom manager due to not being able to get to market, any .apk or such?

Step by Step to get rooted, Help really needed

Hi everyone, I put a thread up a few weeks ago to ask if anyone would help me get rooted, so that i could put a different rom on my note.
i got a few PM's from some helpful people, but not enough back and forth messages to get me started.
so my question is....
Is there anyone online at the moment, that would help me get rooted.
Im not stupid so you wont have to keep explaining step by step.
I just want someone to guide me to exactly what it is i need.
i can happily add anyone on either skype, msn or whatever else you use, to guide me through it.

First of all, it is not enough to be just rooted for you if you want flash a new custom rom!
You must be on a safe kernel FIRST if you want avoid BRICK
I assume that you are on stock ICS. So if you are ona stock ics, be careful!
The easiest way for you to flash a custom rom is (assuming that you are on ics):
−Go to settings> about phone > and check which rom you have (for ex. IMM76D.XXLRT - that means that you have xxlrt rom, or xxlrq or something else, if you are not sure put a screenshot, we will help you)
−Then go to : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191 And download a safe kernel depending on which rom you are. Place it on internal SD card.
− Go to stock recovery (VolUp+Home+Power, wait till samsung gt-n7000 logo appear, then realase all three buttons)
−when you are in recovery - "update zip from sd card" , choose your safe PhilZ kernel from internal SD card, then flash it. Now you are on a safe kernel, but dont do any actions (like flashing, wiping etc.) Yust reboot your device.
−Now in app drawer you will see a new icon called SuperSU. That means you are rooted.
- If you want to be 100% sure that you are on a new safe kernel, try reboot in recovery (volup+home+pwr) now you will se a new CWM6 recovery (it is different from stock, grey background color, if you not seeing it then somethings wrong, dont perform any actions in stock recovery, and ask for further help).
−Now you are ready for flashing your new rom (read OP in rom thread, and folow instructions for flashing written from devs)
If you are on stock GB, then steps are little different (we will discusing it later, now going in bed, it is little late in my time zone
If you do not understand exactly what you're doing, do not flash anything, better to read the sticky threads first, and the Q & A section of the forum, there are a lot of similar questions and answers

And see if your kernel is safe to wipe and flash, I guess Franco kernel below v4 is not.
Flash some safe kernel and you will be good to flash any custom rom.
Edit- yes, you need to change kernel, check post #3 of this thread to change kernel- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30574729
Once on safe kernel you can boot in cwmr and flash any rom after full wipe.

yes, before i rooted my note, i was on 4.0.4
i've done the root via the method in the link in my previous post, and also installed the 3.0.15 frankel kernal.
i just want to know how to go about installing a nice rom now.
and also how do i change the kernal if i need to, as i know some roms work better with different kernals.

Bought a second hand Note. It's rooted as CWM on it. It won't update OTA (no updates showing at all for the past couple of days), and it's on 2.3.6.
Can I manually install an update via Odin? If so which one?

Being a 'noob' isn't an excuse for not looking. Go to the stock ROM sticky thread and try actually looking next time.
It's always so much harder when you have to try (David Gray).

Typical "Omfg do it yourself guy". Here's an idea, stop being such an ass, I evidently looked as I know what Odin is, I wanted to be sure from a member who knows what he's doing just in case I did something wrong. Imbecile.

No here's a better idea - stop being a lazy
If you want someone to do it all for you, there are websites you can pay to root your phone. XDA is NOT that place.
There are threads already for this but you are just to lazy to lift two fingers to look
So you call me an ass? Okay buddy I'm an ass because your too lazy to read the guide that someone spent hours making that is at the very top of the forum as a sticky note in capital letters.
And yet with 152 posts you still refuse to just look at the guides that are step by step instructions because you expect to be spoon fed
Let's look at your other threads "which rom is best" "how to root my desire" and so on
Its not like you even try to look. You just over and over break xda policy and are lazy. Get with the picture and follow the rules
No reason to call me an ass, I am actually a very useful and helpful person to many people on this website. But everyone is expected to at least TRY to look before posting, which you consistently refuse to do (as your previous threads for other devices proves)

Never said you weren't a useful guy. However you for some reason insist I didn;t look beforehand. I made a thread to make sure I didn't mess up my phone, I didn't know if I could flash stock firmware over a root + recovery or not.
So before you attack members in their first post with a new phone, I'd suggest you'd think twice.

My only thing I want to say is next time say what you read. Otherwise it looks like you have done nothing and are just posting out of laziness. There was no way I could have known you did any due diligence with your post aside from a mention of Odin.

TO ANYONE READING THIS POST - NOTE THAT THIS IS ALL SPECIFIC TO UOGRADING FROM GINGERBREAD ONLY
@onetonnoodle Honestly, if you like the features of Sweet Rom, it is an Amazing rom (maybe the best?), but I personally (when I use touchwizz interface) prefer a stock interface, which is why I like @ThaiDai's stock-deodexed LT9. If you were thinking of sweet rom, just go with it. It really is spectacular and constantly updated. Just be aware you may issue a couple bugs here and there because it is in constant development, but they always get fixed right away.
Regarding hardbricking, as long as your only doing wipes while PhilZ kernel is installed, you are safe. Remember anytime a new rom is flashed it overwrites the kernel with whatever is packaged with that rom. Also any gingerbread kernel philz or not are safe. Be very careful if on an ICS ROM though.
There are 3 ways that I would do it. Obviously, there are about 100 ways to do this. These are the methods I may use
IF ITS GINGERBREAD COMPATIBLE (I dont remember), the Mobile Odin Pro method is by far the easiest way
Here is one Method (easier, but only if u have pc odin setup):
1. Flash Sweetrom via PC odin
2. it wont boot because of all your old gingerbread data. After turning it on, immediately boot to recovery. Do a factory reset, or if you want a completely clean install do a full wipe and then reflash sweetrom again via recovery.
3. reboot to system
4. YOU WILL HAVE A YELLOW TRIANGLE. Use Triangle Away from XDA (its free) to remove that, but this does have a risk.
Mobile Odin Method this would be my first choice so long as your GB rom is rooted
I think mobile odin is compatible with gingerbread. You will have to download sweet rom to your phone.
If it is, you can use mobile odin to flash the sweetrom zip, you are already on gingerbread so you are brickbug safe...
If mobile odin is gingerbread compatible, which i believe it is, this is really a simple method.
Obviously your gingerbread ROM has to be rooted if you want to do this.
NOTE: you will get issues because mobile odin doesnt really do a full wipe. if hte issues do arise you can reboot to recovery included with sweet rom and just do a factory reset and you will be fine.
Here is yet another method to update:
1. Open the browser ON YOUR PHONE. *(a) Download SweetRom to the sdcard (internal or external); (b) Download the newest LT9 Philz kernel to your sdcard also.
* **Note: if you have issues getting the download to complete, try opera mini browser because it supports resume downloads.
2. [OPTIONAL STEP, not required] Flash Abyss 4.2 kernel, and do a full nandroid backup in recovery... * I personally would skip this step. *I dont even know if you could find abyss anymore, but I am making an option for you to get a nandroid backup of your gingerbread rom that will boot... *really though, dont waste your time on this unless you want to assure you have a full backup of gingerbread with a gingerbread kernel
3. *Unfortunately, you can't flash philz directly from your 3e recovery (because you are on gingerbread)... it will give a signature verification error. *so you can either flash it via PC odin, or do an OTA upgrade and then flash it (be careful, once you do this you are not brickbug safe).
4. Flash PhilZ LT9 Kernel from either Abyss if you did step 2 (optional), from your stock android recovery if you can put it on your external sd card *only if you did an OTA update , or via PC Odin if you dont have an external SD Card. *Be sure to follow the philz flashing instructions step by step.
5. NOW YOUR PHONE WILL NOT BOOT. dont be alarmed, you only want to go to recovery. *You will have no issue getting into recovery as long as philz flashed properly. *Your phone now has a JB kernel with a GB system, this is why it won't boot.
6. boot recovery (power - volume up - home held until you get to philz touch interface)
7. Go to factory reset, and choose the wipe all option (this wipes /system /data /cache /preload and .android_secure). *Your phone now has no system, but will retain the philz kernel and touch recovery.
8. no need to reboot recovery. *Just go to flash the Sweet ROM Zip. *let it run.*
9. reboot to system
10. Done. *it will already include the kernel.
If you are confused about any step, dont even start the process. ask first.
And be aware, there is always a risk doing this. It won't brick your phone, but you may softbrick it and lose recovery if something goes wrong. The solution for this is to use PC Odin and flash a ROM via PC Odin.
