NC doa? - Nook Color General

I just picked up a NC today, got home, unboxed it and put on the charger as per the instructions. The light went right to green so figured it might be fully charged. I tried to turn it on and nothing happens. So I then left on the charger for 4 hours and tried again and nothing. I also tried power +n and still nothing. So I'm guessing its doa and was curious if anyone has had this experience or heard of this happening before.

Might be a silly question but did you press and hold the power on switch until you see the screen flash?
Sometimes you have to hold it for at least 5-6 seconds. It varies.

Yup silly question lol. I did alot of Googling when it wouldn't boot. I tried all methods of powering on and resetting. I think it might have been a bad battery since it went straight to green when plugged in for the first time.
I returned it this morning and as soon as I plugged in the new nc it booted. Now I'm off to search for rooting methods. Thanks!

Congrats on your NC and getting one that works. May I suggest you look into flashing CM7 rather than rooting? It has many advantages over stock or stock rooted. It can also be run from an SD card if you still want to root the stock OS or just leave it alone entirely.
Check out the other thread here asking about rooting vs. CM7 for more details.

[Q] Help, I think I've bricked my phone!

So, I'm sure there have been about 100000 thread with a title like this, but I did something incredibly stupid.
I was prepping my phone to flash the newest version of aosp's gingerbread mod by wiping pretty much the whole thing (boot, system, cache, data), and when I went to flash the zip (I put it in the sd card while in recovery) I wasn't seeing it in the list of files when I went to look for it in the "flash zip from sd" in clockwork recover 2.5.01. Well, when I was going to go to reboot recovery in the advanced menu, I accidentally had it do a normal reboot, and pulled the battery because I knew there was no rom for my phone to start up on. Now it doesn't turn on at all, no recovery no nothing. This is somewhat expected since the boot.img is gone now, and adb obviously can't see my phone. Is there anyway to save my phone, or am I totally screwed?
Any response is welcome, I'm kind of in a panic right now because I don't want my dad to find out
And please, no bashing, I realize I should have been more careful, but we can't exactly waltz into that time machine and redo it.
Same exact thing happened to me in your post. No recovery, bootloader, nothing. Just HTC screen at boot with no ROM loading.
When you say it won't turn on at all... did you try:
Pull battery
Replace battery
Press and HOLD the Volume Down button on the side of the phone
Press and release the POWER button (keep holding the Volume Down button)
This should get you into HBOOT / Fastboot... anything there?
Plug it into charger and let it sit, I had the same thing happen when flashing mine back to stock, right before I was shipping it to the buyer! I was freaked out, lol. It came back after a few minutes on charger though.
Man I thought the same thing happened to me. But try charging for forty minutes then mess with it

Hard brick or hardware failure

So I think I bricked one... I think its a hardware failure though. My power button was freaking out turning my screen on and off on nookie froyo so I formated system data and cache and reinstalled froyo. It still did it so I pushed the boot and system files to the propper places and tried to reboot to do a factory reset. It is now stuck on an install failed screen and my power btton doesnt work. Adb also doesnt work so there is no way to shut it off. I guess im taking it back tomorrow bought it yesterday from walmart and they are pretty good with returns so oh well. Hope no one else has this problem

Mine seems to be doing the same thing. In the middle of using the nook the power off options shows up. Then it'll eventually power off and I can't get it back on unless I put it on the charger. But then it seems like the battery is not holding a charge because it dies after about 10 to 15 minutes. I've tried 2 different Roms and 2 different Kernels and no luck. Did you ever figure this out?
jv
it's faulty hardware. Had the same exact problem, restored it to stock and sent it to B&N for a new one.
How old were your units?
How much use did they have?

[Q] Can not Power Off

I have/had my nook color rooter (1.4.2) and then the lovely update came by...now, I find I can not power off my nook. I hold the power button for minutes and nothing. I normally would run quick boot, but since root was taken away, I can't even get that to work.
I need to fix this so my wife doesn't yell at me too hard.
Any thoughts/help? Please?
Plug it up to the wall charger....not to the computer.....and try it again.

I just tried that again. It didn't work, I appreciate the suggestion, but I'm not sure what being plugged into the wall would have to do with shutting of the nook, but I'm desperate, I'll try anything. I just need it to reboot, I have the crm card installed in the nook. The button used to work. I'm just hoping that when the battery runs down, I'll be able to restart the nook.
Ok, so got the battery run down, managed to get it charged enough to reboot into recovery. Got root back so that much is done. But the power button still won't work.
And I made the mistake of powering it down (quick boot app)
I was able to get it start booting, (got the skull and crossbones Loading screen) but now it is hung there.
Any thoughts? You guys here are usually really good with coming up with something off the wall that works

Yea I do have a bootable recovery SD Card. I re-ran it and still no love with the power button. Can I just use the old old 1.01 image (if I could find it) and take it back to that point?
I can't even to the 8 interrupted resets, because obviously the power button won't work

I think the button is still good. About a month ago I was able to do the interrupted boot process. When I rooted her NC, was when I noticed the button didn't work. Don't know if something with the flash or if I beat the button to death.

From my POV the Physical Button is dead… If you have tried turning off the NC while it was runing on CWM Bootable uSD using the Power Button and it did not turn off then the Button is dead.
Well, at least I have it rooted, and quick boot installed, I also have a CWM sd card in there, so if it happens to bork again, I can just let the battery die and then when it recharges it will power up....
I guess the button is dead, and I've not seen much in the way of instructions on how to repair the button. And out of warranty its probably cheaper to buy a new one than take it in to get repaired, cuz I can't actually get it back to factory state without having the power button to do the factory resets...

There is an app on play store called NookColor Power Button. It is a widget you can configure to do all of the power functions, sleep, power off, reboot, etc. I suggest you get the donate version. I think it is only 99¢. You can configure it for what you need.

Nexus 4 stopped working during update..

Hi guys,
Very strange problem, just got my Nexus 4, it prompted me to update. It was plugged in, charging, I let it restart to update and it simply never came back on. It didn't do any of the Android update process (with the Android on screen), just shut off, and never woke up again.
I've tried holding down volume + power, and the only thing that happens when I do this is the LED notification light flashes red for a few seconds then turns off, then repeats 10 seconds later.
Has anyone got any ideas of what could be the problem, any troubleshooting tips? It seems to be turning on in some way but not properly in that when I plug it into my Windows machine, it starts to install drivers, but still no real sign of life.
Otherwise, looks like I'll be sending it back and waiting weeks for a replacement..
Trying pulling the battery, oh wait...

Ok, I think I've solved it.
I did a bit of searching for similar problems on LG devices, and found a thread on Microsoft.com about an LG Optimus 7. (Do a search for 'LG optimus 7 not turning on' (top result) I can't post links yet).
Yes, a LG Windows Phone device.
I unplugged the device, held down Vol up and Vol down + Power for around 10 seconds, then plugged the device back in and it booted up. The problem is, it is doing this every time and sometimes this method takes a few tries to get it working.
Once the device boots up, it is fine, but this means I can't install the latest OTA update as when it goes to reboot to install, it just falls over, and to get it to start again you need to essentially do a hard reset.
The good news is that I can probably wait a few weeks for the stock levels to replenish before sending it back so I'm not waiting too long without it.
This happened to me at the store yesterday thankfully they were able to call another store before they opened and hold one for exchange seeing how you fixed it I'm glad I wasn't able to resurrect it right then and there

[Q] Newbie boot loop problem?

Hi everyone, I'm sure this question has been answered before but being a complete noob, I honestly don't understand ANY of the technical terms such as "rooting", "flashing", "ROMS", etc etc. So most of the answers I have read make zero sense to me.
My phone started bootlooping when it was in my bag and I have no idea why it started doing so. The battery ended up draining enough to get it out of the bootloop and it was working fine for a day or so, until I put it back in my bag to go out and when I took it out, it was bootlooping again.
What I am trying to ask is what might be the cause of this and is there anyone who can explain how to fix this issue (in simple terms) so that I'd understand?
Cheers.
mine is doing same!

Well I don't know what rooting or mods are, so I doubt it is anything like that. The only things I've really done with my phone are install apps from the play store, torrent music using utorrent and save images/pictures. I thought that maybe it was due to my phone overheating in my bag as it has been rather hot the past few days. Could that be a possible reason?

since it seems you haven't done anything to your phone (ie unlocking, custom ROMs, etc), this could likely be a hardware problem.
how's the power button working? damaged?
you can also do a factory reset in bootloader, power off your phone, then hold VOLDOWN, press POWER, keep holding VOLDOWN until the bootloader appears (the white screen, with a few options), you use VOLUP and VOLDOWN to move the "cursor" and POWER to select the option you want.

if it's rebooting in bootloader, then it's very likely the power button that's the problem, for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563572

hardware problems are very hard to fix; and i'm not saying it's the power button for sure, it's just highly likely it is, if it's rebooting bootloader.

The problem with my phone is that I found it. Turned it in and no one claimed it for a substantial amount of time so I gained ownership of it. I don't have the warranty or anything that came with the phone except for the phone itself and the charger. If I took it to a phone repair shop would they possibly be able to fix it? Or am I screwed...
Okay so I let my phone run out of battery over night and just plugged it in to charge then and it's seemed to have gotten out of the bootloop and it working normally now, so would this still possibly be a hardware issue? And is there anything I can do to prevent it from bootlooping again?
i phoned up orange and they said to ring htc as ive only had the phone for 5 months . will ring them 2moro. pain in the ass.

Im not sure this is hardware related, there are a few things you can try though to prevent this from happening again. first off, if you ever do encounter another bootloop... pressing and holding in the power button for around 20 seconds or so forces a reboot, the capacitive button on the bottom will start to blink. Second would be to boot into thee bootloader by powering down the phone, holding the volume down button and powering back on while holding voldown. this will bring you to a menu described above eariler, then do a factory reset.
