Nexus 4 stopped working during update.. - Nexus 4 General

Hi guys,
Very strange problem, just got my Nexus 4, it prompted me to update. It was plugged in, charging, I let it restart to update and it simply never came back on. It didn't do any of the Android update process (with the Android on screen), just shut off, and never woke up again.
I've tried holding down volume + power, and the only thing that happens when I do this is the LED notification light flashes red for a few seconds then turns off, then repeats 10 seconds later.
Has anyone got any ideas of what could be the problem, any troubleshooting tips? It seems to be turning on in some way but not properly in that when I plug it into my Windows machine, it starts to install drivers, but still no real sign of life.
Otherwise, looks like I'll be sending it back and waiting weeks for a replacement..

Trying pulling the battery, oh wait...

Call Google, they set up a call center for these exact types of questions.

Yep looks like I'll have to.
Just thought I would check here in case anyone knew any troubleshooting methods that might bring some life back to it.

Oh dear..

I've no intention to frighten you. Had similar problem with lg optimus one. Instead of boot, light just flashed for few times and static snow appeared on screen. Service said that it was motherboard failure.

Are you holding it wrong?

As the front and back both have glass..... are you sure its not turned face down?
Sorry I couldn't resist. Hope you get it sorted, and yeah the Google helpdesk is first place to start

if you have a screw driver kit, try opening the back and remove the battery, i heard the battery is removable but needs to be done with caution... again this is only if you dont want to send it back and wait for a month... just a suggestion..

Ok, I think I've solved it.
I did a bit of searching for similar problems on LG devices, and found a thread on Microsoft.com about an LG Optimus 7. (Do a search for 'LG optimus 7 not turning on' (top result) I can't post links yet).
Yes, a LG Windows Phone device.
I unplugged the device, held down Vol up and Vol down + Power for around 10 seconds, then plugged the device back in and it booted up. The problem is, it is doing this every time and sometimes this method takes a few tries to get it working.
Once the device boots up, it is fine, but this means I can't install the latest OTA update as when it goes to reboot to install, it just falls over, and to get it to start again you need to essentially do a hard reset.
The good news is that I can probably wait a few weeks for the stock levels to replenish before sending it back so I'm not waiting too long without it.

This happened to me at the store yesterday thankfully they were able to call another store before they opened and hold one for exchange seeing how you fixed it I'm glad I wasn't able to resurrect it right then and there

Follow every step but got stuck when it trying to flash and stop at 20% just like when I update using LG software. Order new battery hope fixing the problem. My first LG android phone can't return bought it on craigslist
Hopefully the battery will help...good news is if you can connect and start the flash each time it is not bricked...i have not seen this problem posted before so doubt it is hardware...does adb see it...if so i would try to wipe system and data and reflash...i would also pull sim and sd card before flash to see if that helps ?

Replace the battery with new and same problem, my phone doesn't even read my AT&T sim card.
Any button that I can do hard reset?
I had this same problem is your phone not turning on or just not downloading the update? I bricked my phone installing the update and it can be fixed but if you having problems with the connection during update you gotta keep trying it will go through. If it wont turn on at all there is a fix.

This is the problem:
1. I bought new phone on Craigslist running 2.2 and everything working.
2. Connect to PC and set up driver, software etc.. there is an update so I did.
3. Got stuck about 17-20% and message disconnect and re-reconnect etc.. and I did.
4. Ever since I can't t urn it on unless connect to a charger.
5. I will not read SIM card and kept saying reorganized when check on setting and mobile network.
I am stuck here cause tried so many time. Also, phone turn off with full battery charge but next morning when I turn on completely drained. I think software screw up some how during the initial upgrade. Just don't know how to fix it
OK try this take your battery out and plug it into your computer and hold the volume down key until you hear or see your computer recognize it. It should beep a couple times. Be sure to leave your phone off this whole time. Open up your LG support tool. Once it says your connected open the customer support tab. Click on "Recovery Phone." Enter your phones info and click the check button. It should take you through the steps from there. I had the same problem and had also bought it from craigslist. The good news is even if this doesn't fix it, your phone is less than a year old and can be sent to LG for a fix or they'll send you a refurbished phone. They will want a reciept but if you don't have it just tell them you tossed it. Same for the box if you don't have that. They will do it just start getting angry if they give you the run around. I was freaking out just like you LOL. I couldn't find anything on the web and the LG lady was just as stumped as me... I just happened to try this before I sent it in and it worked. Let me know if you have any luck.

As far as the update goes I eventually did get it to work. Just keep trying. I plugged it in to try again one time and it said my phone was already updated. I went and checked and sure enough it was. The visual change isn't dramatic your signal bars turn green and you get some more bloatware like a 3d game converter. The reason for this is the phone has a custom LG UI and will not adopt the gingerbread UI. Don't freak a lot of people insist its not GB but it is. There is a lot more to a OS than the user interface.

Warranty thru LG or at&t? You mind give a little more. I didn't even know LG has a warranty in US?
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
The warranty is through LG at&t wont do anything for you cause they will know you got it off CL. You'll need your imei and your s/n from under your battery. I wouldn't tell them you got it off CL. The only way this wont work is if the previous owner registered the phone with lg which is unlikely since they didn't even have the GB update. Call 18002430000. Again do not tell them you got it from CL. The phone is under a year old and they will do it for you. If it has to be told that it isn't yours say you had a step brother or friend give it to you. They will want a reciept but you can tell them you tossed it all and your imei Ans s/n will be enough. Also tell them it happened using their support tool. Good luck.

I got panic and it's in local shop if they can repair it but will take it back and try. Thanks.. at least someone here tried to help me... the link flash back to stock ROM didn't work for down load so I can flash it. I even root and flash custom ROM still didn't work now I want to flash it back to stock... if you can just help me a little please
download mode: I got a little confused cause someone told me take battery out connect phone to PC and put battery back. Yours didn't mention anything about put battery back in
Yeah when I did mine it wouldn't turn on at all even when it was plugged in so I think i left my battery in and did it bc it wouldn't respond to anything. I would try to get it to recognize with the battery in but if it turns on after you do plug it in then it will need to be out. You can try to put the battery back in after the computer and the LG support tool recognizes your phone bc after it gets done it reboots. I'm not sure if the battery is needed for it to work but mine was in but you can try it multiple times with it in and out. I freaked out too I had just bought the phone off CL and plugged it in to update and it had the connection failure a couple of times and then poof nothing no vibration no boot screen nothing. The LG people tried getting me to do a hard reset and when that wouldn't work she told me I would have to send it in and that it was still under the manufacturers warranty. I was desperate to say the least so I tried all kinds of combinations. The key is to get your pc to recognize your phone while it is off. If you can do that with the battery in I would try it that way first. If you don't have the box you will need to copy down the phones info, (IMEI and S/N) which is under the battery, for the recovery phone part of the support tool. It worked for me so I hope you have some luck with it. Also I would consider waiting until the ghost call thing gets fixed before you go to gingerbread. If I had known I would have stayed with froyo until they fixed it.

Volume down for recovery and so on. Volume up for download from tool.
If your doing the recovery method that TheDarkLestat setup then your gonna need to do the software setup and drivers step by step. Assuming you have done that. Remove the battery then plug the USB in and quickly hold down the pwr, and vol UP till it vibrates then let go. Start the loader and place the battery back in while its doing its thing . Then don't touch it till its done.
Only simply way I can think of to repair a soft bricked thrill. As long as it loads to recovery or download then our phone Is fixable. You might be able to politely ask TDL to remote in and provide a fix. He was doing that for a lot of us for a while. Though if your not gonna donate for his time then don't bother lol.

Fried during flash?

So I was flashing my OB with a newly rooted verion of 20i using the auto root tool and began flashing it. I've done this before many times without issue. This time part way through it stopped and eventually I got an error saying it had timed out. When I pulled the plug and plugged it back into the OB to try again, it won't go into sw upgrade mode. It won't do anything. Even if I try to power it on using my batter, charger etc...nothing.
Did I fry the OB?? I think I made the mistake of not having the right files for the CP and AP bin selections (backwards) but I can't imagine I fried it?

Auto root tool? Do you mean smartflash tool? If your referring to smartflash tool, it happened to me before. After flashing 4 times a got an error and saying i had a time out. What i did is just turn off the phone and leave it for an hour maybe 10hrs After that try to turn on the phone or try to flash again. If you have problem entering sw upgrade mode try to hold the volume up a little bit longer like 1 minute until it enter sw upgrade.

Yeah the timeout was with the smartflashtool it happened to me and just like what i said before i pull out the battery and i leave it for an hour then i flash rom again using smartflashtool. Try this hold volume up( keep holding even it takes 1 minute just hold it) then connect it to the pc using usb. Keep holding volume up until it enter sw upgrade mode. I have a case sometimes that it takes 30 secs to enter sw upgrade. In case you enter sw upgrade and you flash rom check also if you still have battery left on your phone. Don't unplug it quickly just take some time to charge the phone. If this method did'nt help you, I think you need to go to lg service center. But before that try your best and look for all possible solution to your problem.

Doesn't look like its going to work. The PC won't see it and it won't turn on. Tried a few different computers too. I'll leave it overnight with the battery out but likely it'll be shipped out tomorrow for repair.
I have to say, after just shy of a year of ownership with this thing, this is the first phone to pile up on me like this. Yet another reason why I'll never buy LG again. (Oh and their refrigerators SUCK too!)
GOOD NEWS! My replacement phone came in today!!!
BETTER NEWS!!! It's a Galaxy S2X and I'm putting a modded ICS for my carrier on it as we speak! Far better phone, and way more support.
Thanks to devs for your hard work here. Sorry there were so many tools asking for ETA's. I hope there are less foolish people in the Galaxy thread.
Peace
Lucky you!!!
I must try that trick and fry my phone too.
Really hard on the devs trying to fix stuff without full source code and drivers available. I am on the verge of swapping my ob plus some money for s3 right now, will wait until September but that will be the end of it.

HTC One Stuck at HTC Logo Screen, Unable to boot into the bootloader/recovery.

Hi guys, I'm writing to you in hopes that you can some how save me in this situation.
Like many others, I was stupid and deleted everything on my phone using TWRP. I have tried many suggestions, mostly those found in this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40907625
and in many others however I am unable to get out of the HTC Logo screen. While holding the power button the buttons on the bottom simply blink and nothing else. It doesn't reboot, no matter how long I hold it. The same thing happens when I try and boot into the boot loader.
My only option now is to just wait for the battery to die on its own I suppose but in the mean time I was wondering if anybody else had any suggestions for me. I really hope I didn't brick my phone v_v
Edit - Forgot to mention that when I did try the methods in that thread, the program won't recognize that the phone is connect however the HTC Sync application does pop up on my computer when I connect it via usb.
Did you try adb? You probably still have it from when you installed twrp. Connect your phone via USB, go to a command prompt in the directory with adb (e.g. in the fastboot directory) and type "adb reboot recovery". In windows you can get to a comand prompt (among other ways) by shift-richtclick of the relevant directory and choose "command prompt here"
Thanks for the response!
I tried that however the device isn't being recognized as being plugged in even though it clearly is. Just to repeat, I'm stuck at the HTC logo, not the bootloader or recovery. I know the recovery is still there however I'm unable to get into it from this screen. I'm completely at a loss at what to do next =/

I just posted a Tip on this in the General section on how to get around this without waiting on battery drain. In a nutshell hold your phone under a bright light and then hold the Power/volume button and it will take you to the bootloader. I know it sounds wierd, but the same thing happened to me flashing an international Rom and someone posted to do this, so I tried and damn if it didnt work. I realize its been a few days since you posted this, but if it happens to you again now you will know. :good:

My international HOX recently got stuck at the boot screen after re-unlocking bootloader too. Volumn down + Power will only reboot it and get it stuck again. I first thought this was some kind of a joke, but I tried and saw IT DOES WORK!!!

THANKS! Was trying every possible way to reboot my phone and nothing would work. For some reason this bright light stunt got it booted. Odd, but worked.
Sorry, I know this thread is a few months old, but this is the only place I can find reference to this particular problem.
Has anyone found any real fix for this?
My HTC One is, as in the OP, stuck in the HTC screen following a borked ROM flash. I have tried the power button alone, power+vol-down, bright light, dim light, etc. So far nothing I have tried has resulted in anything besides the softkeys flashing; no shutdown, no reboot, no bootloader...nothing.
Anyone?
Or am I stuck just waiting until the battery dies...
You are holding the power abd vol down buttons for a very long time, right? Longer, as in way longer than normal.
If your recovery does not charge the phone you better not let it run down. I use philz, it charges ablnd has OTG , but moreover charges. It also comes up clean in TechNet ajust by plugging in imported

Correct. No matter how long I held in the power buttons, it did nothing. I ended up letting it run down over the night and this morning ran a restore on the backup I had made before attempting the flash. After restore, phone is back to where it was before, so problem taken care of (sorta). Cyanogenmod 10.2 now installed and working.

Just saying to be careful of battery if his recovery doesn't charge the battery. I've heard problems on recent TWRP releases for Sprint HTC One along that line, though I use PhilZ so can't be certain. If power down was possible, then usually plugging in alone gets me to recovery.
Looks like it all worked out anyway.

Try holdin power and volume up, it will shut down, then power and volume down, will take you to recovery, that same thing happened to me and this fix it

QHSUSB_DLOAD mode??

Hi everybody,
a friend of mine got his HTC One (black) yesterday and rooted it. He flashed a proper custom ROM on it which I and another one of my work buddy use as well without any issues (InsertCoin). No further flashes done, no other custom kernels, no S-Off, no SuperCID. Just unlocked Bootloader and custom ROM.
He let the device run dry yesterday evening so it shut off itself automatically. He put it on his charger, the phone turned on, he did some surfing and installing apps from the market and set up his alarm. The phone charged over night and he was also able to switch off the alarm this morning.
He got ready for work, got into his car and wanted to switch on the screen on the one for some good tunes. But the screen stayed black.
When I arrived at work, he was a little upset and panicked a little. I thought I was able to recover the device.
After plugging it in to my work computer, the device manager just shows a unknown device called "QHSUSB_DLOAD" so I went to google and looked it up..
Weird thing is: QHSUSB_DLOAD wasnt seen yet on the HTC One (M7) as far as I can see it and it was pretty bad on the HTC One S. It means "Qualcom High Speed USB Download Mode" and on the One S as well as on the Nexus 4 this devices showed up after the bootloader got damaged or the device got stuck in that mode for good.
When plugging the device in (USB / Wall charger) the charging LED doesnt turn on at all, the capacitive buttons dont start to blink while holding down the power button as well.
This thing seems to be gone for good.
But aint it the way that we dont even have any access to the bootloader if its not an official update from HTC? Signature check and stuff? Since the device was rooted, no OTA updates were able to arrive at all. He told me that he didnt try to flash anything after we flashed the custom ROM.
Any advice on that?
Did you even try booting the device first thru hboot/bootloader or holding the power button to force a restart? If you did try connecting the device while on QHSUSB_DLOAD and execute a compatible RUU on your PC. RUU uses android's download mode to flash the ROM so it should be repaired by an RUU.
Already tried, no luck. Tells me the device has not been found.
I am sorry to hear that, man, but from the looks of it your friend now has a paperweight. I'd take it to an HTC service center and hear what they have to say regarding this; of course it will no longer be covered under warranty, but maybe they can fix it for you for a price or something.
Are you sure RUU can't find the phone? If it can't then I guess only a JTAG box can fix it so either send it to HTC for repair or have someone who knows JTAG fix it.

I saw this issue on my friend's GS3 once. It was hard bricked and there was no way to recover from what I read (at least on the GS3). I know I saw a thread somewhere here in this forum about the same issue and someone linked to a Sensation thread where there was a way to fix it but I'm not sure if it would apply to the One
Same problem - but the phone magically fixed itself!
I had the exact same problem with my HTC One as described in OP...
My alarm went off in the morning and I set off for work, my battery was low but I thought that I would just charge it when I got to work. I was playing a game (Dungelot) whilst waiting for my bus and was receiving pop up messages about low battery. When it got to 4% left I decided that I would finish the level then close the game down, but as I was just about to finish, the phone went blank...I assumed that I had naturally used up all the battery life and although peeved that I had probably lost my progress in the game, wasn't too bothered.
I got to work and plugged my phone in to charge on my computer. The computer wanted to search for QHSUSB_DLOAD drivers but I thought this must be what it does when my phone isn't switched on and it finds the device. I cancelled the search prompt and tried to switch my phone on...nothing happened.
I tried for the rest of the day, trying to force shut down the bricked phone by holding power in for 30 secs, trying to power into boot mode etc...everything! But the phone would not switch on and the only response I got from it was a little orange LED every now and again and the QHSUSB_DLOAD prompt.
After googling the prompt - I found myself here and REALLY began to sh*t my pants! I've only had the phone less than a month and felt I was tech-savvy enough to flash my phone with a new ROM (Android Revolution HD) to try and get rid of some of the bloatware. I had flashed a new ROM successfully a coupld of weeks before and everything had been fine up that point.
I went home depressed but throught i'd try to plug my phone into a proper mains charger rather than my work's old USB cable (that came with my previous HTC Desire Z) I was going to try a long night of searching the net to try and find a way where I could at least recover the photo's, Zoe's and vids of my new born son but had such a headache that I gave up and went for an early night.
I was woken unexpectedly the next morning by my phone alarm going off! I stopped the alarm and the home just went to Home screen as normal! I don't know how or why these events happened...whether it was the flashed ROM, the game I was playing, the battery running out before the phone could shut down properly, the old USB cable in my work not charging but detecting the device or a combination of all of those, but so far, the phone jumped back into life with the alarm after being charged in the mains all night!
Thought i'd share as it may just help someone else out there who encounters this!
Some phones have miraculously come back from QHSUSB_DLOAD with no explanation of why. Other than that it usually means a hard brick. You can send it to HTC, they will charge you and replace the main board, from what I've heard.

I wonder if having your alarm set saved you. This phone will actually power itself on so as not to miss an alarm.

My Solution
Had the same Problem.
My Solution was to Download "HTC One (M7) Toolkit" and force Fastboot.
Pushed Power and Volume Down until Screen was Flashing.
Took about 2 minutes and the Phone was rebooting.
I have no idea what was happening. I have no idea if this helps or works for others. But its worth trying.
Sorry for my bad english.

This is some kind of mode that is enabled when you hold power on button when the device battery is completely drained. i.e. when you try to turn device on it will not boot up (Special I was connected to usb cable via PC to charge my phone NEXUS 4 when I get into this mode). I saw a similar mode where nvflash commands are executed something like APX(can't recall correctly) with Tegra 4 device (that time also I was connected with a usb cable and charging the tablet when it was completely drained!). A simple solution to quit this issue is DO not Panic and let the device get a little charge. After that boot normally with the power button. In case if it didn't try other modes to enter such as recovery or fastboot reboot commands if your device is getting recognised..
QHSUSB DLOAD means its a hard bricked phone, No amount of messing about with it will fix it, Send it to a service centre, it will probable have to have the motherboard replaced..Sorry
My device entered in QHSUSB_DLOAD mode after the 4.4 ota was installed and 30 minutes later, I was able to turn up the phone. It restarted itself like 5 times and then it was normal. Miracle..

What do you mean by "force"? What did you do exactly?
My device wouldn't do anything, and it was in QHSUSB_DLOAD . But when I later pushed the power button for a minute, it worked.

mine spent the night carrying on waking took the charger and the green light for continued access, tried to turn it on but could not. After reading your response, I tried to hold the power button for longer. After 15 seconds the phone rang and the light came on, everything works perfect so far
Today while I was updating firmware phone gone to QHSUSB_DLOAD mode.
I am guessing it's end of road. :crying:

[Q] Newbie boot loop problem?

Hi everyone, I'm sure this question has been answered before but being a complete noob, I honestly don't understand ANY of the technical terms such as "rooting", "flashing", "ROMS", etc etc. So most of the answers I have read make zero sense to me.
My phone started bootlooping when it was in my bag and I have no idea why it started doing so. The battery ended up draining enough to get it out of the bootloop and it was working fine for a day or so, until I put it back in my bag to go out and when I took it out, it was bootlooping again.
What I am trying to ask is what might be the cause of this and is there anyone who can explain how to fix this issue (in simple terms) so that I'd understand?
Cheers.
mine is doing same!

Well I don't know what rooting or mods are, so I doubt it is anything like that. The only things I've really done with my phone are install apps from the play store, torrent music using utorrent and save images/pictures. I thought that maybe it was due to my phone overheating in my bag as it has been rather hot the past few days. Could that be a possible reason?
Just do a factory reset

Well the thing is, I can't do a factory reset because whenever I try to access that menu that has all the options, it starts looping before I can choose anything, and for some reason the buttons dont always work

since it seems you haven't done anything to your phone (ie unlocking, custom ROMs, etc), this could likely be a hardware problem.
how's the power button working? damaged?
you can also do a factory reset in bootloader, power off your phone, then hold VOLDOWN, press POWER, keep holding VOLDOWN until the bootloader appears (the white screen, with a few options), you use VOLUP and VOLDOWN to move the "cursor" and POWER to select the option you want.

cant do that because as lostpigeon said it loops again before we get a chance to select anything! mine has been doing it out of the blue since this morning , cant turn off or anything . . .loops and loops over and over every 13 seconds.

if it's rebooting in bootloader, then it's very likely the power button that's the problem, for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563572
what can you do to fix the power button? tried drying the phone although it hasnt got wet.

off to warranty...
hardware problems are very hard to fix; and i'm not saying it's the power button for sure, it's just highly likely it is, if it's rebooting bootloader.

The problem with my phone is that I found it. Turned it in and no one claimed it for a substantial amount of time so I gained ownership of it. I don't have the warranty or anything that came with the phone except for the phone itself and the charger. If I took it to a phone repair shop would they possibly be able to fix it? Or am I screwed...
Okay so I let my phone run out of battery over night and just plugged it in to charge then and it's seemed to have gotten out of the bootloop and it working normally now, so would this still possibly be a hardware issue? And is there anything I can do to prevent it from bootlooping again?
i phoned up orange and they said to ring htc as ive only had the phone for 5 months . will ring them 2moro. pain in the ass.

Im not sure this is hardware related, there are a few things you can try though to prevent this from happening again. first off, if you ever do encounter another bootloop... pressing and holding in the power button for around 20 seconds or so forces a reboot, the capacitive button on the bottom will start to blink. Second would be to boot into thee bootloader by powering down the phone, holding the volume down button and powering back on while holding voldown. this will bring you to a menu described above eariler, then do a factory reset.
