[Q] Note Camera settings, what do they actually do? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have been enjoying my Note for a while but I am trying to find out what exactly the following settings do or mean, or what they do and when best to use them.
1. Easy question. The camera edit shortcuts. These don't remain if the camera app if closed using task manager. Is this correct? Is there a way around this?
2. Shooting mode. How does Share Shot work? What does the Beauty mode do?
3. Scene mode. Can someone explain how each of these settings affect the photo?
4. Exposure value - really stuck here. What does this do?
5. White balance? How does the settings affect the photos again
6. Metering. I have tried to understand this, but still not certain. Again what do the settings here actually do to the photo.
7. Outdoor visibility. Is that purely to make it easier to view Note screen outdoors?
8. Auto contrast. Is this better to leave on or off. And what is it doing.
9. GPS tag. Is there a way to keep setting always on? Keeps reverting to off.

Edit shortcut is to choose to preference for setting position only.
Most of your question regarding setting, just I say it will enhance N adjust of photo quality
N best application to understand this is here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDEsImNvbS50aGVvdGluby5waG90b2dyYXBoeSJd
GPS keep on always, first set it on from setting, it will ask to switch on GPS, select it. Now close ca,era application with back button
Now if you open camera appl you will see GPS tag option On.

Thanks for reply.
After I have selected new shortcuts, I quit camera app using task manager and the next time I launch the camera app, my shortcuts have gone. Is that normal behaviour?

I think at least first time exit application with back button after changing setting, then try. Task manager is not routine way to close, it kills application, n thats y it may not saves changes.

white balance is the setting which makes that if you shoot something white, that it will also be white on the picture, and not yellowish, or blueish

Thanks guys for tips.

Exposure value is for use when get 'blown' highlights or shadows - meaning loss of detail in light or dark areas. If you have loss of detail in light areas, select a minus exposure value. If you lose detail in shadow areas, use plus exposure value. Scene modes are just preset values for different situations. Beauty mode smooths skin and reduces some blemishes.

Forgot to say: auto contrast can be left on.

Warning for those who use "screen filter"

It's a great app that dims the screen and make it easier for the eyes, but I found one major bug today. While the filter is on, you wouldn't be able to install any apk's. The button is there, but you can't click it, you can only cancel. Basically it feels like your touchscreen has a dead spot right on the button.
Anyways I was panicking thinking my nexus 7 went crazy, and I uninstalled a lot of apps just to find the culprit. So this is just hoping no one else panic like I did. I also already emailed the developer.
1. It was discussed before, use search.
2. Stop using that crappy app and use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.omegacentauri.ScreenDim.Full for reading.

Um, I use that app, but it doesn't dim it lower than the system does. I just use it to quickly adjust the brightness instead of going into the settings.
EDIT: Yeah, I'm an idiot. That's not the same app I use. Just looks very, very similar. None the less, I tried the free version and it did not get noticeably dimmer.
I'm using the app '2x battery' which also has a screen filter feature, no problems in use, also seeing as I paid up for it it allows to filter by colours, so have set it to fade in a purply filter which basically reduces the green tinge my screen has, took some fiddling to get nice result but got double whammy of screen a little dimmer for indoor use and better colour balance, no lag or Faff so far.
Free version just allows a standard dimmer fine for most scenarios

Well I think screen filter is simple and it e works very well. I'm going to continue to use it, just have to turn it off if I'm installing apk's
I use 'Night Mode'

I am using screen filter with Sony bravia engine and it all works great. screen filter still gets blurry at lower dimness though.
Try Root dim or Voodoo display filter. Both are great for the purpose.

This thread I'm only taking about the specific app named "screen filter" though, just so people won't get confused. It works great btw, the screen can get as dim as you want.

The app you want to use is Custom Auto Brightness by Dmitry Matuzko. It lets you set brightness levels based on your light sensor and has the option to use screen brightnesses lower than the programmed limit without using overlays. Obviously you won't be able to go lower than the hardwares limit, but in most cases the manufacturer sets the software limit much higher than the hardware limit.
Onibabar UpdateUpdate
Thanks for posting this thread! I don't even use a "screen filtering" app BUT I was having the same issue were my INSTALL BUTTON was no longer working, and because of this thread I now knew at what sort of 3rd party apps to start looking at. At first I thought it was the ROM I was on, then I thought it was only on 4.2.2 ROMs since it happened on more then one of my setups, and finally, I thought it was a Mod I always use, that gives my phone inverted apps. In the end though, it turned out to be the latest update to the Onibabar app from the Play Store. Its a app that places a battery bar on your screen and the latest update allows it to be positioned going down on either the right or left side of the screen, in addition to the top or bottom. So whenever its set to go on the left or right side, it disables the INSTALL BUTTON when attempting to install an app from a file explorer...

[Q] How do you turn off auto-focus

As a "proper" camera, the unit seems to be missing some things I'd expect by default. How do you turn off auto-focus an focus manually... taking pictures at night - the stars etc - invariably the images are out of focus.
Also auto-exposure control - you can turn that off easily for images but for videos there seems to be no way to turn off the auto exposure - which makes the end product look very amateurish.
Finally whenever I go out at night, the LCD dims, I can't seem to stop that and it dims WAY too much?
Any ideas chaps?

It appears that you cannot turn Auto Focus off but you might be able to find a third party camera app in the Play Store that allows this
Settings for video are sparse it's true and again there is no control over the exposure etc.
I didn't notice the LCD dimming, The camera doesn't have an auto brightness LCD so I am not sure what's causing that. Turning the brightness up from the drop down notification bar is easy enough though.
Sorry these are not the answers you are looking for but we have to remind ourselves that this is a premium camera not a pro camera however.

Thanks for that. I will indeed look out for such an app. Agree with you that it's not a "pro" camera - but for example - on the iPhone who's video handling is equally dire, there's an app that completely compensates by letting you shoot 16:9 with auto exposure, auto focus and auto-white all turned off at the touch of a button. This camera really does need such controls to make it useful for anything other than "party" videos. Its a big disappointment that Samsung would miss off such obvious controls having taken the effort to make a special camera app in the first place.
there are only 2 focus modes as far as I can tell, auto and macro.
night sky shots have worked fine for me using auto focus though.
I made some nice pictures of a crescent moon without a tripod or manual focus, and it was sharp enough to see the craters on the moon.
using manual camcorder under expert you can set the brightness, and white balance for video recording manually(wb is under the settings gear)
lcd dimming: settings gear - general - display brightness
the settings gear is hidden under the > and the expert mode can be accessed through the mode button.
don't be so afraid to dig a bit through settings.
I often see complaints about missing/misbehaving features in apps when it's all available through a settings screen.
EDIT: apprentice: auto brightness works using the camera sensor, so it only works while in the camera app.
Thanks for that - so solved the LCD brightness, but I've gone through all the settings and cannot figure out how to turn off the auto-focus or the auto-brightness. Put your hand in front of the lens - and both kick in whether you want them or not... any ideas anyone?

As far as I can tell in camcorder mode, the one thing you can set - brilliance- is only relative brilliance - the exposure still bobs up and down like a YoYo.... making the movies look terrible - surely guys there has to be a way to turn this off?

What features do you want updated/integrated from Samsung?

Let us start a summary of features we want from Samsung.
- Remote-Viewfinder with all functions like the camera app itself
- manual whitebalance (within Auto-Mode and easier accessing)
- manual focus
- face recognition in auto-mode
Sent from my GT-P5110 using xda premium
-forced flash light in automatic mode
There is manual white balance feature, but not in automatic mode.

Oh hell, yes i found it. Not really easy accessible and usable. I changed my feature-request ^^

-an API for manual control of the camera in our own apps, ex: shutter speed, Aperture, everything in "expert" mode, etc.
-time lapse option that bypasses the preview requirements. ex: time lapse with screen off to save battery
-unlimited continuous mode. ex: take pictures as fast as hardware allows and save them until the SD card is full
checking for protrusions in front of the lens when camera is activated on start up or activated by apps
else this happenshttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38367332#post38367332
Speaking of remote, how about publishing the remote protocol so we could write special purpose apps with vastly greater control than just launching a "take picture" intent.
And two new options in settings:
1) Don't start camera on power up.
2) Remember my default preference for using the sdcard, don't keep asking on every power up.

+1 for these 2
evSril afflicted
Only owned mines for a few hours now
but
+ 1 : Don't start camera on power up., straight to dashboard would be better
+1 for some type of Focus Control
:- 30 Second Shutter Window instead of 16 seconds
:- Different Flash Modes, maybe its me but I can only see auto, Rear ,Slow Fill etc.
hello
it was helpful thanks
- advanced panorama features like in LG's new phone (LG G Pro) and Samsung WB850F compact camera
- 3D panorama
- action panorama
-3D photo with one lens (as in WB850F)
Normal voice phone calling!
+1 To remember SD card setting on start up
+1 To not start Camera App on start up
+1 Flash auto fill mode
+1 Higher resolution Panorama modes
+1 3D Photo Options
What about untimed video recording option? Currently limited to 25 minutes.
And of course the most important:
PLEASE ALLOW NORMAL VOICE PHONE CALLING!
Sv: What features do you want updated/integrated from Samsung?
+100000000 for most of those named earlier.
Personally, I am really disappointed with the lack of fine-grained manual controls (even in manual mode). What I would really appreciate is
manual focus control
manual flash control (mostly intensity)
smarter handling of flash in all modes: when popping up the flash in auto-mode, chances are, I did it on purpose. If the light conditions don't seem to make use of flash necessary, use it for fill-in, already.
better use of screen estate / refined controls in manual mode. Of course, the huge dials for manual settings do work, but at least for me, they simply steal focus from taking the image. Give me onscreen buttons to modify the function of the zoom-rocker in real time instead, as is done with the dialer on SLRs: hold button for AE and the rocker changes exposure compensation instead of zooming etc...
Sent from a compact camera (Samsung Galaxy Camera, EK-GC100)
Manual focus control
Manual flash control
Faster and better autofocus
Manual White Balance, Can make phone calls maybe because for now i fell interrupted with no native app phone call... when i want check balance of my sim card i should swap to another phone and new features on camera like sgs 4 :fingers-crossed:
i need Manual focus control, Manual flash control
Manual focus slider
+1 for all above,
personally I've mostly missed manual focus, as I like to take shots of moving objects, or objects that are not yet in view.
is there any workaround app for the manual focus ?
also full remote controls for the remote viewfinder would be nice.
+1 dont start camera on power up !
like every digicam has a switch for viewing pictures without turning on lens motor ..

Setting camera to always normal mode or tips for taking pictures

Is there as way to set your camera to always normal mode, every time I open camera it defaults to intelligent auto and for me I just find this mode just doesn't work. Especially in gig situations where the lighting conditions are constantly changing it has a fit. Normal mode almost always takes great shots first try but intelligent auto I give up after the 5th blurry shot.
Also has anyone got any great tiles for capturing those great shots?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda app-developers app
Try this: long click on the screen, add shortcut, but do NOT select "app", just look for "camera", and that should offer you a selection of modes; select the one you want, and that shortcut will open always the camera in that mode.
Take a look at the following database (you'll need an app like SQLite Editor):
/data/data/com.sonymobile.cameracommon/databases/cameracommon.db
Such database contains a table named capturingmodes, which appears to contain the configuration to enable/disable camera options.
Open the camera from the homescreen icon instead of the quick launch button,
this opens the camera in your preferred mode.

[Q] Camera white balance adjustment while editing?

Hi,
for a stock camera software the HTC already offers a lot. However, the tool to process photos already taken seems to lack some goodies... Is there any option to adjust white balance in the editing tool of the camera software?
If not, I hope someone from HTC is reading this...
Snapseed works well for this

hey, yes there is..... just like the last sense 4.0 but they somehow screwed up the UI so most user wont notice it's there, in the default gallery editing software you have to go into effects (where it has some effect like auto enhance, high contrast, twilight....etc) , then press the menu button or the 3dots button on the top right, then select edit effect, then you can add individuals adjustment yourself like whitebalance/contrast/saturation/level/vignette ...etc
Hope this helps

Wow... thank you...
Very hidden. And: Why can't these settings be there in an own tab. Just as an advanced option. I really do not want to create a new custom effect for every time I am editing a photo...
I don't have this option. It just says save or view original.
