Would it be possible for someone to post a YouTube video on how to unlock bootloader and root etc.. for the Vivid. I haven't had any issues figuring out my previous phones (nexus s 4g, droid 2 global, droid 3, cliq.) But this one seems a little more complicated. Im already signed up for the htcdev site but after reading it I'd prefer following along with a video. Any help would be greatly appreciated. A quick shout to all the devs, I can't thank you all enough for all your hard work and efforts. It truely is appreciated.

Go here. WildChild made a video. 2 of them. It covers everything!
Edit: randog and cbb01 made them
I believe the second video is the one you are looking for

I've been searching around but haven't been able to find any very helpful guides.
And seeing the lack of interest from most dev except the few great ones we have is making my interest peak in finally learning.
So does anyone have any suggestions?

What are you trying to do? If it is root phone, etc. look under development at the superguide. Otherwise for development look online at books and read the reviews to see which ones are better.

We have a great general knowledge guide in the general section. As well as the superguide, index, and all in one tool. Not sure what else you're looking for...
Whoops sorry about missing some info in my post. Wrote that right before falling asleep. I'm looking for tutorials and guides to building custom roms and such. I've been doing the basics of rooting and flashing for the last few years and now want to try going a bit more in-depth.

Thanks for the tip. I'm looking more into trying to compile my own kernel atm. I know its a lot harder to start but we all need to learn somewheres .
I'm playing around with trying to build a asop kernel. Haven't really found a 'definitive' guide to start with unfortunately. Cooking a Rom seems to be the most popular options at the moment

Yes you can. There are different steps you need to take depending on if your phone is stock,un-locked,rooted etc.

Why would he get flamed? He asked a simple question so why not give him a simple answer?

Everyones a noob at one time.I help anyone i can no matter what or how little info is in there question.Telling someone to edit there post is in noway helping them.
Woody, it was a suggestion based on the fact that tensions are high here. We have lost at least 2 devs recently, with the last precisely because of too many noob questions/complaints. It is a developer's forum so it is a reasonable expectation that posters are knowledgeable. I'm not criticizing him, just pushing him to go read a little. A quick glance at the stickies would lead him to more than one thread that would answer his question. Users should at least exhaust the basics before asking for help.
Anyhow, your sentiment is good; It is great of you to offer help. If he edited his post or posted a followup with more info, I too would have offered help. But if we want XDA to survive, and in particular, the Vivid section, we have to maintain some minimum expectations.

I have a good treat for you guys. Just need testers to test this new feature in my toolkit. This can brick your phone and I won't be held responsible.
If you are willing to test this for me, PM me for details and I will give you info. If you wanna do it, I'll send you the info you need.
Thanks!

Look at my signature. You can see what it does. The new feature that I am having testers use is not updated in the threads though.
Testing has been closed. Thank you to those who have helped as well as those who have expressed interest. It did not work so I will revise my toolkit with the newly implemented UI soon.
The feature that was in testing was to flash ROMs all through fastboot without the need of using recovery. So basically my toolkit would be your all-in-one tool from unlocking your bootloader to installing a custom ROM to your phone without even touching your phone at all.
I will continue to figure a way to make it happen. I just have to work with other devs to get more knowledge on how this all works.
im posting here because im getting multiple pm's a day asking for help with sense 4.0.... heres the deal im always willing to develop for any device but with these new devices and ics its more difficult with ginger i could port a rom to anything without the device thats not the case now, so what i am saying is if someone is willing to donate a extra device i will build you guys some nice roms if not i wont be much help with your progress with ports... i had a guy named A-to-the-J say he would donate one so if you are still willing shoot me a pm and we will go from there.... thanks guys maybe in the near future you willl be seeing alot of me

I was thinking about this too. Where does one learn? As in, what are some good books to buy on the subject? Thanks in advance.

Depends entirely on what your experience is. There's a big difference between learning to cook having never cooked a thing in your life, and learning to cook French cuisine if you're already a master sushi chef.
I'll play it safe and say I've never cooked a thing in my life, but my dad is also a system engineer and could help if I needed it. I'd rather learn without his help.

Start with an RUU. Run the RUU on your PC. Stop at the first screen after it's done loading, don't proceed, but don't close the window. Start/Run and type %TEMP% and hit enter (this will take you to your user temp folder). Sort the folders by date and open the newest. Here you should find Rom.zip. Use this as your base ROM in the kitchen. Root it, deodex it (or not), zipalign it, etc - and you end up with a flashable ROM from an RUU
