[Q] Froyo or Gingerbread - LG Optimus 2x

Hello,
Is there a major difference between android 2.2 Froyo and 2.3 Gingerbread for our O2x?
Froyo was fine on my phone, but i read that froyo does not support multi core rendering.
Still, the Kernel in Stock GB is Froyo kernel right (2.6.xx.x)?
So are there any advantages coming with gb?
Ics (cm9, aokp) is not ready for daily use, in cm7 i dont like the camera (quality), also i use lg smartshare and music. So its not about CM or Stock, i just want to know if gb has advantages over froyo on the O2x.
btw i really like the froyo cam mod, looks very interesting
Thank you very much,
cheers

Froyo is a bit laggy, and nothing really happens in GB, so there isn´t that much of a different other then the version number and some bugfixes.

umm isnt the question here not froyo vs gingerbread but more like... stock vs custom roms ?
because... you know.... there is an official gingerbread rom and stuff...
in my experience gingerbread is better because it uses less battery and is better at ram management.

Gingerbread is faster and more bug-free, but froyo was smoother than GB.

In cynogen 7 you cand use moded camera with 20 + mbs and fixed focus with is superior to stock lg camera with has about 10 mbs and no video focus (there is no stock camera mod with even start video focus) Or you can edit media pofiles in system etc to increse bitrate. What is the main issue you have with the cyanogem 7 camera?

ginger is generally better with a better management of the ram (no there is still a true multitasking).
20q is a great firmware, I, however, prefer CM7 ....

I personally prefer v20q stock rom with spica SR3R2 kernel. I have used this phone since launch day back in march 2011...I can say that the official rom updates has gone a long way with lots of improvements generally in terms of speed and battery life. I have not tried cm7 so I cannot compare.

Just cross your fingers and hope that when stock ICS is released (better be soon) it actually isn't laggy and free of bugs.

The only thing, ppl still sticking with this phone is official ICS release. It could further open a new window for development.

For me, gingerbread use more battery than froyo. And I have just switched back to froyo because of that.

can u give me a link to the rom. i might do the same.
any real draw backs.
like i heard the 3d rendering / hw accell, etc isnt as good?
can still 3g video call etc. 1080p video ?
Thanks

Stock 2.3 with gueste kernel has about 0.5%/hour battery consumption(measured by battery monitor widget 3c) Its 2 weeks of standby. I usualy can use it for 48 hours of normal use.

I am running V20q for 2 months now. I am not turning off my phone every day. Usually, I restart my phone once a week (lets say after 5 days). So, what is the problem then?

[Q] Why Upgrade to ICS... debate..

Hi Folks, I'm currently running JW4 on Semaphore 2.7.4bmfr, bloatware removed, custom theme, UOT icons and effects, various hacks. This Rom is very fast (no lags), fast accurate GPS, I can multitask due to lots of free memory, everything simply works, it never, ever has SOD's or FC's. It looks good and has great battery life.
I'm been considering upgrading to ICS and have been reviewing all of the ROM's. I've discovered that all ICS Roms all seem to have many issues, and to get to this hassled state, requires lots of flashing, wipes and rewipes.
Hmmmm, my (genuine) question is, why should I upgrade to ICS? What does ICS provide over my current fast, stable, long lasting ROM?
It has to be something more than the way it looks (I mean the OS only exists to run your applications) Guess you might say, just try it and you'll see (which means you have no solid reply, it also means I have to spend hours and hours flashing one or more ICS Rom's before deciding, Damn! I need to go back to JW4 as ICS is too slow/buggy/dodgy battery etc. Hence the reason for this question.
Very good question, i've been wondering the same myself as i'm still running cm7.

You should stay on GB . To be honest, I only stay on ICS, because my titanium backups don't work on GB. But I think the difference isn't big.
--------------------------------
I guess it strongly depends on your favors and focus. I'm using ICS since the first days of onecosmics and teamhacksungs ICS roms. ICS has a bunch of goodies and gimmicks but nothing for that you'd say: You can't use a smartphone without it!.
You're not wrong by still using GB, definetly not!

totally agree.ICS can beat gingerbread in many ways
Face recognizition (i know gingerbread have this but its better on ics)
better UI speed (because of Ui now can use GPU)
and many things i cant remember now.
and about free ram..236 mb free..
now which is better?only better way of gingerbread is multitasking.and ics can beat in several ways.
sorry for my bad english.
with regards to speed, i would have to say that ICS has the edge; I have never had such a smooth experince while browsing and multitasking on GB as I do on ICS. I am currently using DK3 with Devil2 0.71 sio w/ ondemand gov w/ sampling down step @ 5.

What about battery life? Does the usage of gpu for ui decrease battery life? How much of a hassle is it to switch from jw5 to ics: can you use your titanium backups at least for user apps?

I get at least 24 hours usage with ICS. Switching isn't too much hassle, backup with titanium, do a nandroid in CWM, wipe, install ics rom, boot, restore titanium backups.
If anything goes wrong or you want to go back: flash stock JW5, flash kernel with recovery, restore nandroid.

ICSSGS RC4.2 + Devil2 XL kernel.
Im comparing Slim ICS with Darky 10.4.2
With ICS you get better UI experiences.. Smooth and fast..
Browsing is much, much better..
Easy customizable toggles
Easy screenshot
What I dont like:
Camera sucks(less features), cant silent
Battery drains faster
1 lockscreen
Cant join contacts
When ppl call in, picture gets truncated
Default Gallery cant play my AVI files
I will try other ICS roms and decide whether to stick with ICS..
Sure you can join contacts use contapps! I find it the best to sync and join contacts.
+ it has free sms to other contapps users

You don't know what you are saying.
I already used several releases of ICS (AOKP, AOSP, DK, MIUI) and the camera is great and you can silent. About drains, it happen, but depend the type of use. Why you need a different lockscreen? You can join contacts, i already done that. About contact pic, there is another method to override that, it calls HaxSync, by default google don't store high-res pic in contacts.
I'll stay on stock XXJW4.. Satisfies my needs and camera is awesome xD. And I can play several HD games that won't run on ICS
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Both have qualities and lacks... with GB and its roms come a superb battery-life, ICS lets you reach evening with a (not much) strong use, but nothing more.
I upgraded to ICS for curiosity, and the only thing i miss is ofc that feature. Wouldn't ever return to GB though: the rest is better on ICS, from UI to browsing
I could never think of going back to a GB rom...
First, with ICS, I finally have that feeling of maturity that the OS wasn't able to provide with previous release.
Second, hardware acceleration alone is worth the switch IMHO.
Third, RFS on Samsung's roms... can't stand it's performance degradation over time and lagfixes are just like Band-aid on an open fracture.
Fourth, kernel devs have pretty much all moved to developping ICS versions of their kernel leaving GB versions to lag behind.
Yes there are a few glitches here and there, but nothing that can prevent me from doing whatever I used to do on Eclair/Froyo/Gingerbread.
The biggest issue with ICS is with deep idle and that's only if you use your phone to listen to music... which is not my case. But then again, if you take some time to read carefully, it is possible to make work quite easilly.
As for the camera thing... you need to compare apples to apples!
As far as I can tell, the camera app used in each and every ICS builds out there is the AOSP camera whereas the camera app in Eclair/Froyo/Gingerbread roms is the one developped by Samsung... not the AOSP one.
Finally, with respect to battery life, i'm using team ICSSGS RC4.2 with Semaphore 1.0.0s kernel and, really, I can't really see any difference. I get the usual 24-30h of battery life I always had before.
There is a lot of truth in many of the posts for and against GB/ICS. I was extremely happy with Darky's ROM, but after seeing the amount of devs playing with ICS I finally took the plunge. ICS I have to say has not been smooth. Many things work well as has been mentioned already e.g. smooth UI etc. But for me few of the many ICS variants work 100% compared to the stabilty of DRom 10.4.2 or JW4 with Semaphore.
My vote for the best ICS variants are Slim ICS as it is stripped down and works and EXTRAOrdinary ICS which is an AOSP. However even with these, the battery life is not as good I have found with GB. Also using a bluetooth car receiver somehow keeps on FC ICS.
I believe the Semaphore Kernel is still the best although I am now trying Icy Glitch.
Watch this space........

I need a hell of performance. And your help.

I need some advice:
I used Ramhack for a quiet long time now. The negative point of loosing performance for 3D-Applications (Games, Benchmarks..) is comprehensible and in my honest opinion totally acceptable. Next to the Optimus Speed I have a Dell Streak 7, where gaming overall is less complicated and I gain much more performance with this tablet (how ever..). So, you can see, is the p-990 aimed for my everyday use. Every day use means smooth, quick response, less random reboots for me. I need every freakin second my tools need to boot up, close applications, etc...
I want to do quick calls without a tip on the Task-Killer-widged before.
Currently I'm on Nova HD ICS. I really enjoy it, so I would prefer to stay on this rom.
So my big question:
Is there a way to get Ramhack on the Domination rom? Or maybe do you guys have other options for me?
I love this rom, so I really want to stay. But I need a hell of performance. Gaming is well placed on my tablet, so we dont need to take any consideration about it. Even if I need to type 3 freakin pages of code into the terminal. It's ok. I need speed and smooth response...
Thanks in advance!
You say that you love the ICS rom you're using, but assumes that it doesn't have the performance you need, right?
So, basically, your question is : " is there a way to make CM9 as faster as CM7?" The answer: no.
ICS has, by nature, a heavy hardware resources demand. I've tested a couple of CM9 roms out there and they're all fast at first sight, but the multitasking feature isnt performing right. Because our device has only 512mb of ram. So, that means you won't be able to alternate between 3~4 apps instantly, just because the ICS itself already uses a big part of your ram. You can try the V6 Supercharger for ICS script, but I do not believe it will magically turn your cm9 into a cm7.
Unless nvidia/lg release the hwa drivers for ICS, if you want a rock solid and ultra fast device you should use CM7. I recommend Temasek's unofficial builds, they're just awesome.
Cheers

You could just flash a new kernel. There are some CM9 kernels that offer the ramhack option. Cool.guy is right though. CM9 is slower than CM7 because of the missing hardware acceleration etc. Just use Temasek's latest CM7 build. Fastest ROM I've ever used!

[Discussion] - Best Custom Rom / Kernel

Hello Proud user of LG Optimus 4x HD,
Now that we have '' Unlocked Bootloader '' and our beloved phone is being looked after some '' Great Developers '' let's have a look at the ''Features, Functions and Disabilites'' about all this stuff being Developed around here. This thread is open to all who want to make suggestions or express his/her experience about any Particular Rom / Kernel.
So happy Discussing.
Have a nice Day/Evening.

I am using the latest official CM10.1 Nightly build and play around it for 3 days. It is really great. Compare it with Stock LG 20B JB. I found
The pros-
1, The speed and response of UI, open up apps, web browsing and etc. improved a lot!!!
2, Less heat is generated
3, A lot better battery life.
4, A lot more control on everything.
5, Officially support FB home and it runs perfectly (You can even download it from the Play store)
6, seems it has better multi-tasking, at least it won't kill too many of the background apps (I have VLC direct running on background, I will always get killed on stock LG rom, but on CM10.1, it will still running while I am doing something else)
7, Better and more pretty UI.
The cons-
1, MHL output is not working correctly. (and it seems it will never work)
2, No custom ringer and notification sound.
3, All volume seems less loud than the stock
4, Media won't scan again while you unplug and plug the SD card back on.
5, Camera has less control and lower performance (HDR run slower that it really wait and take 3 slow shot to compose, no way to shut down the shutter sound, no ISO control and only +/-1 exposure control)
6, Too many option and control on setting, you might not have an idea what it really do....(maybe it is a pros for some ppls, haha)
It is just my opinion during these 3 days. Maybe some of them is just a bug or I just too new to this. Hope you guys don't mind. Even there is a lot of Cons, I think this ROM is very nice. Thanks. =)
Mike
Well I'm currently in the process of reverting to v10a. Call me crazy but if you're a gamer it's the fastest rom with 99% of games working great. Since then LG became obsessed with overheating and slowly degraded its performance. Now that I'm unlocked I'm going to see if it's possible to use proper clockworkmod on this rom, if it works maybe someone can port some custom kernel features. JB and cm10.1 are still great though and I plan to continue experimenting with them as more stuff is developed

I have also switched a lot in this last month or so but just in between Stock, CM10,1 and Werewolf Rom.
1. For me stock has the best battery results almost used phone for 40 hours or so still with some battery left and had absolute no problems at all with the baseband issue ( I hope xtribas and others who do have it get over it as soon as possible with the help of good development).
2. CM10.1 is great work and a build of devotion from its developers almost everyday comes a new nightly with some features and tweaks. Runs very smooth and till now have had not many bugs I would say some problem with baseband wakelocks here but not in Stock which I cannot explain why.
3. Werewolf's Rom one of my fellow Countrymen is Fantastic I really appreciate his work, time and efforts. It's an awsome Rom fast, stable almost reliable like stock. It will be best Rom after Stock I guess.
I am not a Gamer so sorry to all Gamers I don't know how is the Gaming Life on this Phone (with all due respect to @non4 and others, I hope you guys get best out of this phone with the help of our Clever Developing Team.) In between I do play games but on my Laptop ( Acer Aspire V3-771G, intel i7-3610QM 2,3 GHz, 16GB RAM, 1,2 TB HDD, NVIDIA Geforce GT 650M )
Happy Discussion Guys

Update: flashing clockworkmod on ICS gives the notorious security error, for it to work the ROM would have to be repacked to a flashable format like zaiben. And the eternity project kernel just got updated, based on feedback I may have to go back to JB already

After next time you revert to v10a (you seem to switch back and forth a lot ), would you mind packing up and uploading the files in /system/lib? I need them, but really would like to avoid having to flash back to v10a/h at the moment. It seems that LG's ICS builds are currently the only builds with properly working MHL and it is likely it has to do with the included tegra libraries.
I am even more interested in these files for v10h (although the relevant files may be the same), if anyone has easy access to them.

I guess I will try this:

I have used nightly and iodak's combination for couple of weeks and I am very happy with the using experience. Battery life is much better than stock and gaming is no laggish. Currently I am using Arararagi's unoffical version so I can still use LG's quicknote and Memo which are only things I want to use from the stock. thanks for Arararagi, make me love CM more. Werewolf kernel also great but I found iodak's better for me. Any way you won't regret to move to CM.

that's because they had all the time they have to develop a better ROM before the official launch. But once after launch whiners and babies will cry for updates so they had to rush a bit more, which sacrificed optimisation time.
Good ROM takes time. If CyanogenMod didn't have nightlies or RC - just stable releases, god it could be ages before anything from them sees light.

You're dreaming dude IMO we won't get official 4.2.2 nor 4.3

Mm, probably not, but why is it shocking to you all that 4.0.3 is faster? :s The lower the android version, the less resources it needs because it has less features, less processes, looks worse, lower demand for high quality rendering etc etc.
Think about it, would running 4.3 be as fast as running 2.3.x on it?
In my eyes, the lower the android version, the "Faster" it will appear.. Also, post some benchmarks of v10, and we can compare them to a benchmark of 4.3?
Edit1:"Optimizations" You mean they add placebo to the stock rom? fact is, CM9 will be faster then V10, and CM10 will be faster then V20. Say they release V30 as 4.2.2, you can bet your ass CM10.1 would be faster, v40 as 4.3, CM10.2 would be faster. v50 as 4.4 say, CM11? Would probably be faster than it.

No higher Android better Performence. Because it has more features, and can handle the Hardware better. For Example I mean Android 1 Beta dont support Dual Core Processor. Because the Rom doesnt detect it. And Android 4.3 can handle Bluetooth 4.0 and can handle the Ram and Processes better. Like compare windows 2000 with Windows 7 64 Bit.
If the Hardware Requirements is ok, we can have the full Power of it with good Android Version.

W.T.F. :banghead:
Did you really just try arguing that?
For me the stock rom 4.0.3 was fast but had alot of lag issues when installing apps, closing apps etc.. Now on stable cm 10.1 i got no issues at all and my battery life doubled.

There is some truth when it comes to 4.3. For me cm10.2 is like lightning even compared to v10a. v10a ICS was pretty fast, but not as good as this. Its the best rom from LG with no tinkering though

Well try to use CM 10.1.3 latest with iodak v7.. U feel much difference!!! Its much battery friendly and Smooth
I moved back too, but to "official" 4.1.2 not 4.0.3. im using Jellyfish HD 1.3 (with iodak kernel) and its great. Finally MHL works, camera is awesome, video recording is smooth not like on cm. everything is smooth and battery life is much much better. I don't need to worry anymore if something will not work (like on 4.2 customs)
oh and games are more laggy, thats only one disadvantage
Sorry but we need to differentiate between pure android and OEM modified android. There is no possible way pure ICS is smoother/faster than later pure android versions. Resource management has only improved in newer versions of android. Hence low end devices always experience a performance improvement from newer aosp based Roms, from their latest stock firmware. Its common that OEMS introduce poor code, bugs etc that may take from the user experence in newer versions of their firmware, this is possibly the case of our device. Although there is a very minimal difference between stock 4.1 android and custom ROM/ kernels in terms of battery vs performance(other devices I own, the difference is night and day.). Which indicates lg done a great job of android 4.1 on our device.

That's total rubbish. I've seen nexus 7 users get worse and worse lag as they upgrade. That's pure android straight from Google! Nexus 4 users too. 4.3 Does have optimizations, and good ones at that. Its bloody fast no ****. But I've never seen a direct correlation between higher android version and smoother performance. Never. And I've had too many phones due to breakages. I knew a guy who swore by froyo when cm10 was available, because it was bloat free and smooth. Just because new bloat isn't directly visible doesn't mean it isn't there.

Do you seriously think google push crazy amounts of money into making a worse os than they had? I agree, and said in my previous post that updates occationally brake things, Its understandable for the android ecosystem(im not saying its accepable, i pisses me of and ive experenced it myself.)
Each update is a net good for android, btw google isnt bloating android, oems are responsiable for that, and oftern ruin what would have been a good update for a device. ICS on this device was better for gaming, but it distroyed battery , JB fixed that found a better balance.
I know people who still cling to windows xp, some day they will have to reliese, underling windows 8 is a much improved os.(no matter how much they or I disagree with the interface)

Gingerbread or ICS for speed

I want my phone to be as fast as possible....Whats the best choice?Maybe froyo is "faster" than gingerbread?Thank you
How do you mainly use your phone? Is it for gaming, or everyday email, music etc?

I'm running the CM 10.1 (Jellybean 4.22) FINAL stable. Its fast - sometimes but often the phone really lags when switch tasks, from say shazam app or whatsapp to phone contacts, and gives a black screen with no response for a while. Its very frustrating. The video also lags when recording and drops many frames. I am wondering also if the phone really is faster on ICS or even gingerbread. Yes its cool to run the latest but really for everyday use we want the phone to be as fast as poss.
Maybe someone can come and confirm this is just a bad config and later roms are ok or the solution is ICS for the OP
I mainly use my phone for facebook and internet...
IMO you should stick with GB mate if you want your phone to be as fast as possible. Gigabread+ is my favourite gb rom.

Well I'm using CM10.2 nightly. It is definetly faster than ICS. I have two devices for comparison. I would say that it is even faster than GB. If you want to record 720p I would recommend to stay with GB, becaus in CM video recording is worse than in stock. In my config the battery drain with CM10.2 is higher than it was with GB.
