I admit.... I am a noob big time, love this my droid 4....I bought a droid 4 from a girl, whom I take it rooted this phone in the icon's there is a (super user), I have no warranty on phone so it does not matter, so I took it to Verizon because when I have a incoming or out going call I can hardly hear the person, they can hear me fine! but speakers as for as playing music and videos are great! Now the issue is was told I needed different rom installed most likely to hear better because somethings change when the phone was rooted, and it is fully rooted, the man at Verizon checked to see if it was fully rooted and said it was, can you please tell me where and what I need, or pls guide me on how to get this root off here, I do not know much about phones other then calling or texting so pls pls be nice That is the only known issue I have having out of the phone not being able to hear the other person talking, very low... Thanks if you know of a fix. I guess what I am asking is there a app or something I need to give me incoming and out going call sound back! pleaseeeeeeeeeee HELP... Thanks Misty
I'm even more of a noob than you, I don't even own a Droid4 yet! But, from what I've been reading, this looks like it will unroot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492843
I don't see how rooting would cause your issue but unrooting should be relatively easy. You will want to download the Droid 4 Utility from the link above. Double click on the Droid4Utility batch file to run the utility and select option 2 to unroot. After it finishes running double check to make sure super user is gone. Go in to stock recovery using this instructions:
turn your phone off
hold both vol+ and vol- buttons
while holding vol+/vol- hold power
menu comes up
--scroll with vol-
--select recovery with vol+
droid and ! in a triangle comes up
--push both vol+ and vol-
--you are in stock recovery now
(thanks to greekchampion04 for the instructions)
Then perform a factory reset. This should completely restore your phone to stock out of the box condition.

I ran the droid for utility option 2 to unroot says make sure phone is unlocked but gives me this system can not the path of specified, however super user still on my phone!
got the phone un rooted finally now to figure out my sound issue.
Now if you take it into a different Verizon place and ask about it they might be able to give you more help. My understanding is that their attempt to fix it will stop as soon as they see the phone is rooted. So basically the first time you took it in you had a 0% chance at getting real help. This time around this may be different and they can tell you what is wrong.
Please understand:
root just means "admin" access to the phone. It gives you access to anything. Rooting, by itself doesn't mean the function of the phone is modified in any way.
ROM = operating system. In theory, you could have a ROM installed (on some phones) without root access at all. They are NOT the same thing. A ROM means the phone has been heavily customized.
It is quite possible to have root access without having a custom ROM installed.
Thanks to all
I finally figured out how to unroot the droid 4 how easy was that lmao god I am such a noob was so simple but only took me 2 days lmao and when I did just what everyone said for me to do that I clearly did not understand it worked like a charm ugh what a dummy I am... Thanks to all

Once I am where to wipe/factory reset what to I push to get that started I do the hit vol+ and Vol- at same time takes me back to triangle if I click up takes me up down takes me down. ????
I am guessing you hit the power button to select an option. I have not actually been in the stock recovery but that is how safestrap recovery works.

I assume you are planning on wiping the phone if you're going to get a new one. I would just use RSDlite and fastboot it. That will get rid of root.

I have a Samsung Captivate and was able to sim unlock nd then root everything was running great, but because i wanted to change the rom and get rid of the AT&T bloatware I decided to install SRE rom from this site but first i had to install rom manager from the market, & install Clockwork Mod which i did so far so good. I go ahead watch the video follow it step by step except i didn't wipe data then install rom. So i decided to kinda start over i booted into recovery wiped data then attempted to install SRE rom again and that's when all hell broke loose phone freezing up on the home screen, not completing its boot process, rebooting by itself, i tried removing Sim card, Microsd, but still not allowing me to reboot into recovery with the key combo or ne other way for that matter. I then tried odin one click to reinstall factory everything but no luck. Sorry for the long story just trying to put it all out there. O yeah i'm a newb incase you couldn't tell. I don't have insurance to try to return to at&t. Thank you in advance for any and all help you may provide.

try getting your phone into download mode. If you can do that then use odin to flash everything to stock.
Are you able to get adb to access the phone? You can access recovery from there with the following command:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Also, are you getting into download mode when trying Odin 1-click? I've found a pretty fool-proof method pull battery/SIM/SD, putting the battery in, holding down the two volume buttons and then plugging in the USB. Works every time for me, and is easier than it sounds.
I was stuck on a boot loop the other night and that process got me into download mode so I could flash with Odin and then restore my backup.
Worst comes to worst, just bring it to AT&T and say it randomly did that. If it's only two days old, and you're under contract (didn't buy it outright) you don't need insurance. I don't even think insurance is available for this phone.
take out the battery, plug in the usb, put the battery back in, hold both volume buttons down, then hold the power button down... the grey/green battery icon will flash to a black screen, as soon as it flashes to the black screen the second time, let the power button go, and download mode should be there.
@rrrrrramos i do not have a contract with them. I obtained this phone through a friend that does have insurance for the handset. Since my computer does not recognize it i am not able to adb.
@magnumrt62 & rrrrramos I have tried these button, usb combos and nothing. I appreciate all the responses i will con't to try and seek psychiatric help...lol.
How would i know i am in dl mode? All it does when i let go of the power button after the second blk screen is nothing but show green battery nd con't to charge then goes to black screen. Computer doesn't recognize it.
Are you using the SRE with voodoo in it, if so that is not playing nice with ROM Manager, it is a known issue that Clockwork Mod dosen't recognize ext4. Sounds like that may be the issue. read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784170
It sound like that is the problem.
I am unable to mount/unmount the internal/external sd cards because the phone freezes and does not allow for this. The few times i was able to get odin to recognize phone com3 i hit masterclear left it alone and 6hrs later it had done nothing. I can't even get into recovery mode. I am about to see if this beautiful phone will fly then bounce... O how a grown man wants to cry over his phone... LMAO... Can ne 1 close to orlando, kissimme, poincianna help a fellow Captivate lover out i got beer money, gas money, i'll drive too you. hell i'll even cook a new york strip or two.. HELP ME PLEASE..
To do master clear your have to be in usb debug mode and at the home screen. Fire up odin then plug the phone in odin will see the phone and then hit master clear. It will then wipe the phone

Thats where the phone freezes up at on the home screen and just stays stuck there. The last time I was able to get into the phone i switched on usb debugging but still nothing. I just booted up the phone and heard the sweet bing sound but still doesn't show up.. I really appreciate every1 taking time out to try to help me.. Just wanted to put that out there..
So am i one of the unfortunate souls to have "BRICKED" his phone. I will not give up yet.. As long as i see the sweet "S" i will not give up..
I don't think you bricked it. Something is going on with your drivers, if the computer won't recognize it. Obviously your phone has been able to boot into recovery before if you had ClockworkMod on it. Did you get into Recovery using the key combo?
I have not been able to get into recovery using any key combo. Right know i am actually in Android System Recovery by using adb reboot recovery and a lil luck and speed. It is recognized by odin3 0:[com3] but it will not do any thing. I clicked master clear and it states master clear started but that was 53 minutes ago.
You need to use the odin from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 as it is made to specifically use with the captivate. It also includes the jf6 kernael which is critical. I used method 3 for the I-9000 because SRE 1.3 put that kernel on the phone and screwed it up big time, it has different hardware assignments. When you put the battery in, hold volume up and down and plug in the usb, no sim, no external sd when doing this. No other version of odin worded for me, just this one. You can't do a master clear until you are fully booted, I don't care what anyone says, it will never work, besides, you don't need to. You need to hit the "Start" button in odin when it show that you're connected. It will reflash you phone with the proper rom and kernel.
Don't download anything else from there but the odin file, you have the drivers already and don't need the other kernels (what got you here to begin with ). just that version of odin that already has what you need.
Good luck man!

It's great that you can get into recovery mode through adb because that means you can get into download mode: adb reboot download. Then you can flash back to stock with odin.
Also forget about recovery. That's not going to help you right now. You need to be in download mode to use Odin
I'm going to give that a shot when i get home. Why didn't I think about adb reboot download wow guess you can tell i'm a real NEWB.. Thanks i'll let u know how it works out for me..

What is it that you don't understand. Master clear only works when you are at the home screen. You can't evoke it from download mode or recovery. You have to have your phone recognized by odin when you are at your home screen and then you can hit master clear. That is the only way that it will work.
It sounds like adb works so when you are at the home screen and you envoke adb reboot recovery it reboots the phone into recovery correct. If that is working then there should be no reason master clear won't work then. Boot the phone up normally and then run odin 1 click then plug the phone in if odin recognizes the phone then hit master clear and see what it does. It should work.
@ Everyone who suggested things for me to try THANK YOU. I finally got it with the adb reboot download. Didn't know i could do that. @Sparker366 I would envoke adb b4 it got to the home screen as soon as odin recognized it i would envoke commands, because the phone would freeze on me on the home screen Just didn't know about the "download" command. Thanks again every1...
Greetings everyone!
I'm trying to root my Motorola Milestone, the current OS aparently is 2.1 and the carrier is movilnet from venezuela, and I tried to root it so I could have Wifi tethering.
I practically got stucked trying to root it, and in one of the firts steps (loading the ADBrecovery on to the SD card). when I loaded the files to the phone, I tried to load the exclamation point pressing holding camera and on button, it didn't open the exclamation point, so I tried it like 5 times trying to load it. since i couldn't, read some more, and saw that I had to press X and On button, and it worked. when I tried to load the file, it told me that it failed.. since it failed, I pressed the boot the phone and it turned off. then I turned on the phone and it repeatedly started to turn off.
I've got so confused and since the only thing that I changed was adding the files, I deleted them as fast as I could. and well, the phone is stable now. but I'm somewhat scared of damaging my phone.
can someone tell me how to root my phone or tell my why did it go crazy? what could i have done wrong? could a virus in my laptop affect my cellphone? (I somewhat doubt this since the phone works on linux, but, then what could have caused the crazy booting?)
thanks in advanced people
sorry for the shameless bump, but I'd love to get some help so i could finally tether the wifi.
Hi.
To put phone into recovery mode:
Turn phone off.
Press and hold X while pressing power button.
Release power button keeping pressed X.
Use pad to select update.zip.
To put phone into BootLoader mode:
Turn phone off.
Press UP on pad and hold until pressing power button.
Release power button and keep holding UP on pad until You see "Bootloader blah, blah" on screen.
That's about modes.
For problem You have, first of all, You must to find sbf file for Your bootloader version (try google for vulnerable_recovery_only_RAMDLD90_78.sbf ) and flash with rsd lite on windows or proper program for linux. Next, after flash sbf file, find update.zip (google for milestone_root.zip), save to pc and put phone into SD card mode when connecting to usb.
Copy update.zip from PC to / (root) of Your memory card, turn phone off and apply first thing I wrote above for recovery mode, then apply update.zip.
Note that for rooting, depend of Your bootloader version, You must to apply correct version of file. So if You have for example bl 90.78, You must to apply 90.78 sbf and so on.
If You still have problems with rooting, please post back.
PS, don't forget to CHECK BL VERSION!
Cheers
EDIT: DOH... phone is not going crazy. You was probably use wrong files.
Thanks a lot dude, I'll try this as soon as i can, I've been really busy with work lately
No problem.
Cheers

Hi,
I was wanting to perform a nandroid backup of my phone so that i can upgrade to the latest baseband as I don't really want to wait for it to be released in the uk.
So I turned the phone off and then powered the phone back on. I have read through this forum and on google and found I need to press The power button and volume down until android appeared. So...
The first time I did this the first screen I got to was the updating screen. I let go before the screen appeared as my htc hero (phone before my O2X) booted straight into recovery mode after holding for a second or two. I had to pull the battery and let the phone reboot.
The second time I did it I got to a box with an arrow pointing out of with the android outside of it so I let go again. This time it has wiped the phone back to factory defaults.
Could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong please. Obviously the nandroid backup is useless now I have nothing to backup but I'd still like to know for the future.
I hope someone can point me in the right direction
Sedge
If entering recovery reset your phone you didn't install clockworkmod recovery. Install CWM from a thread in the O2X development forum or download ROM Manager from Market
Oooooo that makes me feel like a right n00b.... cheers for that. Do i need root access for cwm?
If i was to get rom manager does that do the same job as cwm to get into recovery mode??
thank you so much for your help!!

Yes you need root, if you use the one from my thread, it gains a root shell to flash it, but doesn't perm root the phone.
Use SuperOneClick if you want proper root.
Cheers for that rusty. I might just perm root it tbh then i can also do a titanium backup and use that. When you say it needs root to flash, does Cwm flash something onto the phone to make the phone enter recovery? If it does, what does it flash?
Thanks again!!
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
It flashes itself so you can boot into it.
You can use ROM Manger to boot into it, vol- & power, reboot apps from the Market etc
OK, so I am not new to flashing ROM's, but I formatted system from recovery (storage and mounts) and was going to flash unleashed 1.1, but somehow I accidentally rebooted phone before flashing anything!
Now the phone only boots into the M dual core logo, and wont go any further. After a battery pull, I attempted to go into recovery by volume up/down and power button simultaneously, and choose recovery, but the phone goes to the exclamation point inside the triangle and wont boot into recovery.
What do I do?
There's a partial fxz that will reflash just the stock system partition. Find that and use it.

I guess this is relatively simple. Haven't had to use RSD, so will search for a tutorial. Hope this file will download from the coffee shop I am at in the next 30 minutes!
Easy. Pull battery. Put battery back in. Hold vol down button. Press the power button to get the black screen with white letters. Launch rsd pick the file you downloaded select uncompress and flash. Go have a cigarette or quick beer and it will be done.
I have done it way too many times by bricking my phone trying to edit services jar to get 1% battery increments although i may throw in the towel soon on that

Now the phone will not pass the screen that comes right after the big M. What do i do? can someone please help?

AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S)
Battery OK to Program
Transfer Mode : USB COnnected
I am stuck at this screen. Wont let me do anything! Anyone knows what I should do? Thanks
I swear I just saw a post last night that stated you could get into recovery by the following method.
pull the battery, put battery back in, hold down the volume up and down buttons while pressing the power button simultaneously. This should take you to the screen with exclamation mark inside triangle.
Next (this is the part where I get uncertain. Darn memory)
press the volume buttons simultaneously and it takes you to factory recovery? or volume down by itself. If you can get to recovery you can wipe cache/dalvik cache and system format under (mounts and storage), then re-flash the rom again.
But I am not certain about that, because I cant find it again, but it wont hurt to try.
If that doesnt work, you may have to do the following, but It would seem like that is extreme fix for just removing your launcher?
someone chime in here.

Wait, im rooted so does this flash me back to stock or is this just the recovery that comes stock on the D4?
simply going into this recovery does nothing.... id imagine doing a factory reset from within this recovery will get rid of your root as well... the only thing i dont think this will un-do is if you have installed safestrap
why dont you give the stock recovery's data wipe / reset a try and let us all know what it does and doesnt un-do for future reference.

Wiping data and cache in recovery, either stock or Safestrap, will not remove root. You need to do that manually as well as uninstall safestrap via the menus in safestrap recovery.

see the post above.. cell zealot is right... it doesnt remove root, just the superuser apk.. you are going to have to use the windows utility to remove boot.
as for removing safestrap... in looking through the menus i see that you can disable safestrap by
boot into safestrap
- advanced
- disable safestrap
then boot into stock recovery
wipe everything
plug into windows with USB and the utility
do the un-root function
and then you should be back to complete, ready to send to vzw, stock.

You are a lifesaver! Thanks a bunch.
no problem... im just trying to think what i would be doing in the same situation... and i want to make sure its possible to get back to stock (since we dont have fastboot)
Do you have any idea how the development is coming for fastboot? I have safestrap but idk how to use it correctly. So ive had it disabled since i put it on my phone. I learned on my X in Sept using clockworkmod so when it came to the having system 1 and system 2 it just didnt click for me. So im just rooted and still on stock ROM. Couldnt do without TB with all the blur. Hell netfick alone used 22.3MB so that was one of the first to go. Lol
for fastboot its not development... we are waiting for a leak of the files from verizon/moto
the safestrap thing is a bit different for sure, i also came from the X.
Rooting is new to me, first root in Nov, but its amazing how much ive learned already. I fact i was so anxious to flash a new ROM on my D4 that i did so just before Hashcode had the had the D4 safestrap done and ended up with a bricked phone. Luckily i had just gotten it so i as able to return it as a defective device. Now the ear piece speaker is out. FML Lol
not to be an asshole... but maybe you aught to slow down... read more, and do less until you have a better handle on things.
Oh i dont think that. As my bf put it im click happy which is why he bought TB Pro for me. I soft bricked my X when i first rooted by deleting some system apps or i should say by deleting some apps that system apps used. Wen ended up purchasing an sbf file to get it back. This as before i was told that some system apps use other apps to function. After i bricked my D4 on the 3rd day of owning i decided that i need to just wait. Lol

im in the same boat, i call verizon and they gonna replace the phone ,but my concern is if they gonna found out about bootstrap on the phone because ican uninstalled due to i locked in boot loader, they say if they found out that it wastn a factory defect they will charge me $299 for the phone, the phone will be here tuesday, i really wanna fix the phone but with out charge i cant o well
I have a solution for the dead battery. A factory Motorola USB cable will bypass the battery and power the phone directly, but you still need a signed full webtop image for the D4 to fix your phone, unless I am not understanding what the issue is that caused your problem.
I don't want to break the rules here by promoting my own products, but we sell the factory cables just for this specific purpose and they work great on all Motorola devices and many others as well, particularly those with non removable batteries.
You can also make one yourself if you are skilled with a micro soldering iron.
There is a thread on the Razr forum of XDA describing how.
Edit: We are currently out of stock but getting more next week. They were shipped out to us yesterday.

To answer your question, it is possible for them to determine if you had safestrapped, but not very likely due to the fact that they would most likely flash a full XML.zip to restore the phone and that would wipe any evidence of safestrap and/or root.
