[Q] custom rom install - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello xda dev , i have a dumb question.my friend has a SGS i9000 and i want to root it and install a custom rom.he has the stock rom eclair and i want to install xxjvu.I saw there is a pit file and when to install it's needed to tick repartition.my question is , when i'll install it (xxjvu) it will lose all(pictures, videos ,music, etc.)?

99% of the time all data is safe. However it is best to back up all data that you want to keep just in case the flash goes wrong.
Please note that this happens vary rarely but best pratice is to back up the data.
Flashing a new ROM with odin will wipe any downloaded apps and saved games etc.

i know that it will wipe data ,thanks for fast reply!

Newbie question about ROM flashing

I flashed my SGS with 2.3.2 a few weeks ago. Now i would like to flash my phone with another ROM. I know it's a stupid question but i wana know if i should go back to stock before i flash or just go on. If i have to go back, anyone mind telling me how?

it depends what ROM you are trying to flash,
if you need to go back to stock then download something like JM1 with all 3 files and PIT, JM1 will restore the bootloader which gets changed when flashing to 2.3 (depending on which 2.3 you flashed)
then once you have flashed back, you can move on to whatever ROM you like, but always make sure you have a backup before flashing,
its better to go Eclair first than to whatever Froyo stock rom u prefer than maybe custom rom
alright. thanks guys : ) .

[Q] Upgrading from Milky's kernel 2.3.4 JVR to ICS

Hi all
I'm currently on 2.3.4 JVR with MilkyS Mod 1.3 and think it's time to take the plunge to ICS. I really like the speed and stability of my current set up, so was just wondering if you could help answer a few questions:
1. What's the best ICS ROM for me considering I like MilkyS? Battery life is important as is stability.
2. I have CWM already on my phone. To upgrade, is it just a case of doing a CWM back-up of my current set up, and then clearing cache's etc, downloading the new ROM to SD card and running the zip file in CWM? Or are there additional steps?
3. If I screw it up, or an unhappy, can I reload my current backed up set-up via CWM without risk?
Thanks in advance
Sach
I used dark knight v3 , it is good. just flash from cwm. but if you want to go back to GB. you will need to flash from odin , can NOT just restore a ndriod backup ....I tried it and my phone is now bricked...

[Q] Wipe or no wipe data ?

Hello guys,
I want to ask you something : which element in a Samsung stock firmware determine if the ROM will wipe our data or no wipe?
Is it the dbdata.rfs file in the PDA files ? or it's in CSC files ?
Thanks.
Sorry for my bad english.
If you don't tick re-partition in odin then it shouldn't wipe as far as i know. But im also fairly certain that that the sd card will NOT be wiped when you flash via Odin..
Why would you want to do this though, it will probably cause a boot loop or some conflicts...
Are you flashing the the same stock rom or upgrading from a stock rom? You should never flash custom to stock without wipe it most certainly will cause a bootloop..
If you want the apps to use to help backup your phone before a flash then lemme know and ill recommend some..
First, thank you for answering me.
I explain you the situation : i m on a stock rom now for example, JVH.
I want to upgrade to JW4 with my modem and CSC so I use Ramad guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=965190) to split JW4 into 3 files; but in his guide, he said that we have to include a dbdata.rfs file.
So we have 3 files to flash in Odin without needed to tick repartition.
Will it wipe my data ( apps, game save etc...) ?
TBH I don't know. According to post 36 in that thread then wipe did not work, but he suggested it should
Why can't you use Kies to upgrade your firmware if your on stock?
All I can suggest is PM Ramad and ask him. But don't expect an answer as I'm sure he is very busy and probably receives many PM's daily.
Alternatively I think you can go to recovery and make a nandroid backup of the whole system. Then make a copy of your whole sd card by drag and drop into a folder. I think that is usually where all the game data is stored.
You can try use "titanium backup" but i believe that is for root users only.
Also there is "SMS backup and restore", and "app list backup" (this only saves the market links, so you have both a list and link directly to the market app. It will not save non market apps, but will be usable as a list of all apps installed no matter where they were downloaded from).
Good Luck
Thanks.
I have PM Ramad but he didn't answer, like you said, he should be busy.
And I dont use Kies because I have to wait my carrier to get update, which is too long (or never lol )
But thank you, I will stay on my actual rom.

[Q] [ROM] Criskelo's ICS V7 install question

Hi Guys,
sorry for this noobie question but I'm quite new to android.
I've passed hours reading the forum about roms, kernels etc...but there are so much information for my little brain that now I don't know what to do...
So I'm on a GB 2.3.6 XXLC1 stock rom, with Franco's kernel 3.x version and I'd like to install Crisleko's ICS V7 ROM on my device but i'm not able to know how really to install it on the phone...the phone is full rooted. I wouldn't like to brick my note, so here's the reason of my question :
In my case, which is the most efficient way to install this rom ?
Sorry if this question has already been posted, but within all answer, I don't know what to do....
Thanks a lot for yout support.
You can flash the rom also directly from CWM. The reboot into recovery and select : _install zip from sd card _chose zip from sd card _select the criskeloRom zip _click yes ...... Flash it from Cwm i raccomend the Cwm app.from chainfire : _copy the rom to internal sd _start Cwm manager _ chose flash update _select criskelo Rom _click on yes...
I'm also afraid to hardbrick my device, and dude, i bought it 5 days ago lol
I had a Galaxy Nexus and flashed, installed new kernels, rooted, did everything.
I asked few ppl here and they said we should wait till the official ICS comes, it will take 1 or 2 weeks, better than hardbrick my note <3
Not quite because most bricks actually happen because of the stock ICS ROM.
Flash whatever you want, just remember to go from GB and not stock ICS, and remember - never do a factory reset while on stock ICS kernel.
If you need to do a factory reset, just flash a GB kernel, or flash GB stock with Odin, then wipe and flash ICS back.
Also, CM9 highly recommended
Ok guys, thanks a lot for answers. I've tryed to flash this rom and everything worked fine except the fact I'm a noobie and restore with TB Apps and user datas ^^. Now i'll know that user data don't have to be restored !
So I'm came back to my GB rom...
Maybe one more question :
I'll installed a new rom, I think i've understood what to do and what not to do with wipe from ICS roms but after wipe data / factory resest ans dalvik cache, is there a way to have a connection wizard software so a to set everything up because I had no data connection anymore ?
Thank a lot for your support
Hello Pascal-T,
I think I'm in the exact same position as you (except that I'm not rooted yet), but i'm also on GB LC1 and I want to go to Crisleko's ICS V7 ROM !
As I understood, you have directly install Crisleko's ICS V7 ROM on your rooted GB LC1 ? So it's not needed to install an other lower ICS ROM before going to the LQ3 of Criskelo ?
If yes this is great, then I just have to root my GB LC1, do a backup up with TB, and then I can follow Crisleko's ICS V7 ROM topic ? (At the begining I though I should first flash a stock ICM ROM but It seems to be THE THING TO AVOID).
If someone can just confirm these informations, that would be perfect
Thank you !
Well this seems like a perfect place for me to post Ive asked around, And searched a lot, But still cant figure this out. I dont wanna sound like a noob ( I am to the Note )
Ive been flashing and modding for years, Samsungs, HTC's, Sony Ericssons so I know what to do.
The thing is, All the threads I read about the bricking, and how to avoid it, Just keep forever linking me to different threads, and i end up back at the start. I dont have the Note yet (should be arriving any time) Im thinking of Only rooting for now as im not confident enough to flash without errors. But when i do, what i need to do is, Use ODIN to revert to GB (Unless it comes with GB) then:
1, Flash CF-ROOT kernel
2, Flash abyss safe kernel in cwm
3, reboot back into cwm
4, Do a full wipe
5, Install a ROM
Is that right ? I like the look of PA but would like to try a modded stock ROM to start with, So any recommendations ?
TIA
A-D

[Q] New GT-I9000 - what to do

Hi guys I have just got a new (to me) GT-I9000 that was on T-Mobile and has been unlocked by the previous owner. It's spec is:
Firmware 2.3.3
Baseband version I9000XXJW4
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9000BOJV8-CL273008
Build number Gingerbread.BOJV8
32GB SD Card
I have test connected it to ODIN in Download Mode (3 button press) after giving up on Kies !
1. Should I Root it, and if so how. I have read various articles on here but don't want to brick it due to using the wrong Code/Version
2. Should I back up everything, image etc onto the SD card, if so what method do I use to do that
3. Should I stick with this ROM or are there better/newer ones out there I should flash .. if so which versions and how ?
Apologies for the simple questions, but step by step recommendations would be most helpful so I don't mess things up.
thanks
1) I really recommend rooting it, or installing a custom kernel (like Semaphore). You will get a lot more options to play around with, but more importantly: built in Voodoo Sound.
Here's a guide you can follow if you'd want to flash or just root/flash kernel. If you were to flash a kernel, you just open Odin and put the downloaded tar into PDA and hit Start after plugging in your phone (be sure to matching version).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
2) If you're referring to backing up apps and etc. I personally use Mybackup Root + SMS backup & restore. Also, syncing everything with Google, like contacts. Flashing with Odin does not erase your SD-card but for safety reason I always backup my files to a computer.
3) If you prefer stock/Touchwiz I would suggest you stick with stock GB, maybe XWJW8 which is the latest one? If you'd like a customized GB rom I recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1689513 which is JW7 with some extra tweaks and Galaxy S3 theme.
You could also go with ICS/JB if you want the latest Android versions. Hope everything works out for you!
