[Q] New GT-I9000 - what to do - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys I have just got a new (to me) GT-I9000 that was on T-Mobile and has been unlocked by the previous owner. It's spec is:
Firmware 2.3.3
Baseband version I9000XXJW4
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9000BOJV8-CL273008
Build number Gingerbread.BOJV8
32GB SD Card
I have test connected it to ODIN in Download Mode (3 button press) after giving up on Kies !
1. Should I Root it, and if so how. I have read various articles on here but don't want to brick it due to using the wrong Code/Version
2. Should I back up everything, image etc onto the SD card, if so what method do I use to do that
3. Should I stick with this ROM or are there better/newer ones out there I should flash .. if so which versions and how ?
Apologies for the simple questions, but step by step recommendations would be most helpful so I don't mess things up.
thanks

1) I really recommend rooting it, or installing a custom kernel (like Semaphore). You will get a lot more options to play around with, but more importantly: built in Voodoo Sound.
Here's a guide you can follow if you'd want to flash or just root/flash kernel. If you were to flash a kernel, you just open Odin and put the downloaded tar into PDA and hit Start after plugging in your phone (be sure to matching version).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
2) If you're referring to backing up apps and etc. I personally use Mybackup Root + SMS backup & restore. Also, syncing everything with Google, like contacts. Flashing with Odin does not erase your SD-card but for safety reason I always backup my files to a computer.
3) If you prefer stock/Touchwiz I would suggest you stick with stock GB, maybe XWJW8 which is the latest one? If you'd like a customized GB rom I recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1689513 which is JW7 with some extra tweaks and Galaxy S3 theme.
You could also go with ICS/JB if you want the latest Android versions. Hope everything works out for you!

[Q] newbie wants to root SGS I9000 - quick advice!

Dear all
Please bear over with this newbie question, but now I've spend around 10 hours searching/reading in this forum and on the internet so now I feel I've made a decent effort of trying to find the answer I'm looking for, before asking stupid questions.
I want to root my Samsung Galaxy S I9000 phone, in order to (primary reason) modify the hosts-file and avoid ads! The phone is 1 week old. I'm concerned about guarantee, but people has written that I should not be concerned because I can always revert back. I've used appbrain to export a list of applications and I'll unmount the SD-drive before attempting. I've found out that I'm running (typing *#1234#):
PDA: I9000XXJPY (= "baseband version" under settings)
PHONE: I9000XXJPY
CSC: I9000OXAJPY
Build Info: 2010.12
And from settings I know my:
Firmware version: 2.2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 (it also says: "[email protected] #1")
Build number: FROYO.XXJPY
MY IDEA:
------------
To begin installing Android SDK (on either windows or linux) + Odin3 (think version 1.7 is latest, it's only on windows, right?). Then I think I should install Clockwork Mod Recovery (CWM) + nandroid...
====> Question 1:
I think first step is Odin3 which will root the SGS I9000 phone... Correct? I guess it's as easy as here:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-root-xwjvb-and-install-clockwork-mod-cwm-recovery/
Correct ?
====> Question 2:
Should I use z4root or superOneClick from http://shortfuse.org/ ? I think I've read that z4root is the best, however abedi here has the exact same software as me and he says/writes it hangs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13025681&postcount=2878
??? Which to use?
====> Question 3:
I read this:
6.I want to install new firmware but I want to have a backup of my original firmware to go back to in case I need to go back for warranty reasons. Can I backup my original firmware somehow?
As of now, there is no way of backing up firmware entirely. However, there are firmwares out for every region and virtually all regions have received a 2.2 or 2.2.1 upgrade which can be applied through Kies or Odin.

(from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596 )
So how do I restore everything if I need my warranty and if I need to return the phone?
====> Question 4:
If I have to root the phone before backup up, then how can I restore everything back to the state before I rooted it? I don't understand that. And is it nandroid or CWM I should use?
I still don't get it... In my opinion, making a complete backup of everything should be done before rooting - however it's a contradiction I think that you need to be root, in order to backup because then it's a rooted backup and not an unrooted backup???
====> Question 5:
When I've done the above, is it then a good idea to try this?
http://romkitchen.org/sgs/?s=generator
I've also read that this "Darky's ROM" should be good... I found something here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
Is it correct, that this is good (the best that is currently available?)?
Finally: Thanks for your time - I appreciate your answers and any hints/suggestions. I've taken myself time to read a lot, however there's too much information out there and I need to clarify the above before taking the next step. Another problem is that google and the forum probably have some outdated information here or there and that discourages me a bit. Please help/advice!
Thanks in advance!

Ok, thanks a lot for your advice/comments.
I've already looked a bit into some of the links. And as I see it, there are still some questions that remains unanswered, but there are also some very good answers (and thanks for that, i.e. use ODIN for updating the rom).
An example where I'm still confused (hope I've not overseen something):
====> Question 2:
Should I use z4root or superOneClick from http://shortfuse.org/ ? I think I've read that z4root is the best, however abedi here has the exact same software as me and he says/writes it hangs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=2878
??? Which to use?
And my question 3 is directly related to one of the links you posted and I'm asking for an explanation of the contradiction in the fact that some people say I can make a 100% backup/restore and the link below says it's impossible:
====> Question 3:
I read this:
6.I want to install new firmware but I want to have a backup of my original firmware to go back to in case I need to go back for warranty reasons. Can I backup my original firmware somehow?

So how do I restore everything if I need my warranty and if I need to return the phone?
In Q4 I ask whether to use nandroid or CWM (not quite sure about both):
====> Question 4:

bit difficult for me to answer as i have just double bricked my phone .
Double brick = even Odin dont want to recover the phone .
jje
Ok, thanks jje.
I still hope somebody can/will answer Q2+Q3+Q4 in their own words, before proceeding (maybe with something stupid that'll void warranty and maybe something worser)...
As for rooting, I have never had a problem with Super One Click...I used it on both my phone and a coworkers.
Just remember if it hangs, change your USB debugging setting (either turn it on or off, depending).

You can't really do a full backup until you root. That first step just has to be a leap of fate. Once you are rooted, use the instructions for hardcore's speedmod kernel to flash a cwm enabled kernel via odin. Then, go into recovery mode and use the clockwork settings to make a nandroid backup.
As for the contradiction, some things will not change when you flash a nandroid backup, such as file system settings and modem. Therefore to return the phone to a warrenty state you need to download the original firmware and flash it via odin. However, for normal use, nandroid backups do just fine.

rschenck thanks for both replies! My final question/comments comes here!
1) Super One Click didn't hang at all. Installed perfectly without problems (usb enabling was on the whole time). To answer my own question 2: I decided not to try z4root because I read that it is not maintained anymore - just for the record. Maybe some other newbie can use this info.
2) This is a perfect answer to the other things I was wondering about. However, please clarify if you by this "…use the instructions for hardcore's speedmod kernel to flash a cwm enabled kernel via odin…" mean that I should look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756 ???
THANKS!!! This wasn't that hard after all... Hopefully nothing will ever break and hopefully I'll never need/get warranty issues...
Firstly gaining root access to access the hosts file is SIMPLE
Superoneclick v1.6.5 roots every sgs I have ever come across (personally I have rooted 4 different ones now) and I have used it to root a xperia x8 as well
I would then recommend downloading the busybox installer from the market and letting that install the latest stable busybox.
then ADFREE also from the market will modify the hosts file and automate the process of keeping that up to date.
on the choice of z4 my only experience was of that not working at all for me so that's all I can add to that.
personally beyond that I use odin to flash the voodoo lagfix and sound mod kernel with CWM and I love that. It's brilliant but I recently did someone elses SGS and it didnt want to play so I used the speedmod kernel with CWM instead. The quadrant scores aren't as high but it seems stable enough and quadrant isnt everything.
CWM will effectively let you back up the whole rom but in order to make effective backup's a simple rooted phone is enough CWM is not a requirement. With something like titanium back up from the market you can make all the back ups you want on a stock phone as long as it is rooted. Personally I do a CWM backup every couple or three weeks, but I do 2 different nightly backups with a weekly full backup scheduled on titanium and I use the titanium media sync to push the backups to my dropbox. This way I always have "belt and braces".
Might seem like overkill but I have around 350-400 apps installed at any given point. 5 lots of push e-mail etc etc etc.
(that should cover question 2&3 I think)
question4
Superoneclick will allow you to remove the the hack and the superuser and busybox programs.
you seem a little confused, there is a difference between hacking the phone for superuser (root) access (which is all you really need and can be done above with one click and no odin etc) and hacking the phone to modify the boot loader which is what clockworkmod is. This changes the recovery area of the phone.
typically when you do this you use odin to flash a new kernel which will include the clockworkrom recovery bootloader.
this is more risky (but still almost always recoverable from in my experience) typically the new kernels include a root solution so flashing a kernel does not require the phone to be rooted already. Usually flashing a new kernel will add extra benefits or features such as the option to change the filesystem that the phone uses to a faster one than the default used by android (this is usually called lagfixing).
technically I would guess that any of these things COULD invalidate warranty but in reality I doubt they would and you should be able to reverse almost any of them prior to returning a device under warranty. personally so far I have screwed up my phone and others a number of times and I haven't once found something that darkyy's ressurection rom hasnt been able to rescue me from. Worst case I flash that then reflash with a stock rom. (I've been able to do this when I have forgotten to unlagfix a phone when I have checked efs or repartition by mistake all sorts, I have had phones in the condition where the wouldnt accept any sim card and darky's has got me out of all these states simply repartition with the resurrection rom and bob's yer uncle)
Hope that answers your questions and helps you understand the differences.

Need help with installing a custom rom.

Please help!!! I have searched and searched and searched the forums and have come across so many threads on how to add a custom rom to your Captivate.
To start, what I have been trying to do is add a custom rom after upgrading my phone from ver 2.2 to 2.3.3 GB. Some posts say you can just upgrade with the 2.3 on the phone, other posts say you need to take the phone back to the stock 2.1 rom. Then you find posts that say, make sure you have the stock bootloaders and kernals when you downgrade to the stock 2.1.
You can easily see how even a somewhat above novice can get confussed. To take my phone back to 2.1 I have followed posts that say use Odin 1.3. I have used odin before so no big deal. However in this case again you are getting different opionions and versions on this. Some have just the odin .exe and others have the .exe and the MD5 and .ini it the package. I am assuming that the one with just the .exe has everything built in as the size is quite big.
I have tried both ways and after I "Flash" it will not finish with the normal recovery mode and see the linux script. It will go to the ATT window and just keep rebooting over and over. I then will use my JIG and get back in download mode in order to reflash back to 2.3.3 just to get the phone to work again.
Can someone please give me a clue as to what I am doing wrong or direct me to the proper files and maybe some better step by step instructions.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Here is the info:
Firmware: 2.3.3
Baseband: I897UCKF1
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I897UCKF1-CL273832
Build: GIGERBREAD.UCKF1
^ From the looks of what u posted, it looks like u have the leaked i897uckf1 currently on ur phone. If that is the case, then u could Odin the Cognition Beta 2 Kernel and then flash the latest Cog Rom (having already copied it to ur internal sd).
Just flash the kernel through Odin then use button combo (volume +/- and power...release after u see the at&t screen) to get into CWM 4.0.0.5 and flash Cog 5 v 1.00 from there.

Are you plugging into a usb port in the back of your pc? Also, there are several methods for flashing back to stock now, once you upgrade to GB bootloaders you don’t ever want to use the Odin with the button fix because it will only flash the secondary bootloader and the primary bootloader will remain GB and the result will be a hardbrick. Also, some of the newer builds came with Froyo installed and using the older 1 click Odin by DesignGears will put those devices in a bootloop. So it really is dependent on your device and your needs. I now use the method outlined in the Continuum 6.1 thread which will not touch the bootloaders and brings you safely back to 2.1 stock. I always clear user data and cache in recovery, flash back to stock using Cezar's method (not a 1 click) prior to flashing a new Rom. Most devs recommend flashing to stock first because there is less chance of corruption.

Listen, I'm new at this and learned watchin mobiletech videos from youtube. At first I found it hard but now is pretty easy (in my opinion). The first thin I do is back up apps with titanium and paste to my laptop (for me is faster to install them back), go back to stock 2.2, master reset using dialer (no odin), root, reboot, install rom on sd card, using odin i install bootloaders (I9000), flash talon kernel (odin), flash rom (CWM) and reboot. That's how I do it. Now, I could b wrong but doing it that way, in that pattern works for me. Like I said, I'm new at this but trust me....I've done it several times and it works for me. Keep reading and then decide how you want to do it. Good luck..."HONESTLY"!!!
It all depends on where you are now and where you want to go.

I'm new to all of this and have done a good amount of research but seems like the information never ends and there are a few ways to load a custom rom.
Method one
BACK UP!!!
Flash to stock (FTS)
Wait for your phone to reboot and then re-enable debugging
Hook phone back up to pc and Master Clear (MC) using Odin
Load Clockwork update.zip (DOWNLOAD)
Load FireFly_X-X.zip to phone memory
Remove sim and external SD, and unplug USB
Boot into recovery and reinstall packages (You may have to reinstall packages twice to get to Clockwork recovery)
Once in Clockwork recovery (Green Text), select install zip from SDcard
Next select choose zip from sdcard
Scroll down to FireFly_X-X.zip and select the file
This will run the script and install the ROM to your phone
After this is done, select go back and then select reboot phone
This may take a while, so leave your phone and go grab a snack!
Method 2
Load ROM file onto phone
Boot into recovery
Select ROM and flash it
Reboot, wait and enjoy
Wash, rinse, repeat!
What are the differences? Which one is better?
Seems like the first video is very simple and straight forward?
Am I missing something here? I'm already rooted and used titanium backup.
I'm on 2.2 Froyo and wanting to flash to Firefly 3.0
Thanks!

[Q] Using UOT zip files in stock recovery.

Hello All,
This is my first post! But I have been visitor of this forum for some time now. Its been a great learning experience! OK ...let me come straight to the point..
Important Phone Specs:
-Samsung Captivate with stock ATT froyo (UCKB1)
-rooted, installed one-click lag fix (other minor things, like removed all bloatware, overclocked etc.)
I am planning on changing the icons in the notification bar (for example battery icon mod) using UOT (ultimate online theme kitchen) and I have the UOT zip file ready.
Q1. It is not clear if this zip file can be flashed from the stock recovery mode.
Per my understanding, these are unsigned files and hence might not work with stock recovery mode. Can some one please confirm?
Q2. If stock recovery mode does not work, then I plan to install clockwork mod recovery from the ROM Manager apk available on the market.
a) Since I will be using a custom recovery image, I assume I will no longer be able to use KIES to perform any stock updates if and when they become available. Is that correct?
b) How easy is it to revert back to stock recovery? Can you please let me know the procedure (or) point me to a link with this information?
The reason I ask is because I would like to stay stock as much as I can for the moment.
Thanks all for your help.
Regards.
I have used the UOT kitchen zips on stock KB1 but not with the stock recovery. I think you have to use CWM recovery. There's really no reason to go back to stock recovery. If you ever want to use Kies in the future to get updates (assuming ATT ever releases GB through Kies), you would have to flash back to stock anyway for Kies to recognize the phone.
Jackman,
Thanks for the response. I agree with you. I am not hopeful that ATT would release GB any time soon for captivate...so yeah I makes sense to go ahead with the CWM recovery.
I just wanted to know the pros and cons before I get started with the process.
read the how to flash custom roms link in my sig. new user guide too, find the part about stickies.
#1 correct.
#2 rom manager is only good for froyo roms on captivate... there are froyo kernels with CWM built in and tweaked that run fine on stock roms, but you must Odin flash the kernel.... which leads to...
#3 keis is garbage we use odin, the official samsung flasher utility. and we flash the same .tar files keis uses.
#4 easy to get back to stock. odin-one-click stock flashes are ONE CLICK. Sticky in Captivate Dev section. (use new user guide to find.)
Kies is trash. Even if you go back o stock, you probably need to modify code to make sure your phone's ID is still the correct one. It really isn't worth it considering Kies is just ODIN with a different UI and a craptistic amount of "checks" wich makes it fail 90% of the time.
I hardly ever have problems with odin. odin 1.3 sucked 1.5and newer work great. the homemade one clicks can be buggy. md5 check wont let you edit file names of tars. other than that i DONT have problems. its all i use. dont like heimdall and having to change my drivers for it.

[Q] A newbie here with GT I9305 needs instructions

hi members,
I was a Windows Mobile user, then iPhone user, and did flashing custom roms, jailbreaking, install cydia, sources all myself. Okay, recently i switched to Android GT I9305 from iPhone. After my painstaking research of how to install ClockworkMod and to root device. I believed that i got CWM and Rooted successfully into my device, and have installed Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, etc.
Here're my questions, hoping whom may generously offer help
My GT I9305 -- Baseband:I9305ZHALI2, BuildNumber:I9305ZHBLL3 purchased in Hong Kong
1. I'd like to flash a custom rom! Before to do so, i know i need to backup, but i don't know what exactly i need to backup with Titanium Backup
2. About custom rom-flashing, i don't fully understand of how(i did search all over, seems a bit messy and not clear enough or maybe my bad comprehension, anyway), sth like Regional, Networking, or any i concern..............as i a newbie wishing there would somebody give out a Really Detailed Instructions
3. As my device has been installed CWM and Rooted. How do i reverse it to what it was like - Non modified, brand new? Please share a piece of information if you know well.
As Android is far more complicated than Windows Mobile and iPhone for sure. I really hope somebody out there give me a hand
Lastly, i apologize for this long annoying thread, and asking such stupid question again
Expecting some with broad knowledge...
Thank you so much
1) Titanium backup only does Apps. Contacts and messages will need another app.
2) Use the All-in-one tool kit. It has everything. In general, you need to push a kernel with CWM using Odin, then use CWM to install the custom rom. (Custom rom not included in the tool kit. Explore and see which one suits you. You maybe best suited for a lite rom to begin with).
3) There are stock images which you can flash via Odin to get back to stock. You will need Triangle away app to remove the flash counter.
Not true, Titanium also backs up messages, contacts, call logs, blue tooth pairings, wallpaper, accounts, etc
How? I can never get it to do that, even with a system settings backup (Full backup).
I always use a different app after losing all my messages during a rom swap once.

May i ask for about flashing rom, i still don't know how exactly the way of doing it, could you guide me with flashing custom rom

Try this , it;s great for beginners :

Just flash from Odin, no root required first...
Why use this Root Method? Well the main reasons are:
- You have a complete Odin Flashable ROM Package.
- No Insecure Kernels are used or required.
- You can flash these packages on Non-Rooted devices
- The Binary Flash Counter will NOT increase when flashing these ROM Packages.
- The Red Exclamation Mark will NOT appear at boot up.
- And finally, you only have to flash one file in Odin and you have a complete firmware including Root Permissions.
What Root Package is used in these ROMs?
- Busybox 1.20.2 (Newer ROMs)
- SuperSU 0.99 (Newer ROMs)

And you can also access a rooted, deodexed and zip-aligned ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1935570 or a pre-rooted, totally stock Nordic unbranded ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2112213
Even though I'm in Canada, I got one of the HK devices you did with the very same firmware. Since I don't really want the Chinese elements of the HK build, I went with the Nordic unbranded ROM.
Once you have root I'd also suggest getting Mobile Odin. You can flash any firmware in .tar format directly from your device and can inject root, busybox and Mobile Odin again, so you'll always have root. And, you won't advance the modified counter that voids your warranty. This doesn't work for .zip files though.

[Q] Installing Jelly bean on an ICS note

Hi, I came across this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
It gives instructions on how to install JB on an ICS note.
Installation
1.a Pre installation : (For clean installation, optional)
- Make backup with Titanium Backup or other similiar app.
- First wipe cache and data if you are on GB ROM
- If you are on ICS/Custom ROM, make sure you have safe kernel, otherwise first flash it (here is philz safe kernel)and then only wipe cache and data.
1.b Final Installation
- Download ROM, and extract it to .tar file
- Download Odin, open it
- select PDA tab and point to ROM file. Leave Re-partition, pit, CSC, Phone tab unticked (see Image below)
- Switch off device, Put in download mode (Vol down + Home + Power)
- completely close kies, Anti virus if running

I'm from the UK and the only UK based ROM of JB is a Vodafone rom, my note was originally on 3, but it accepted an O2 sim card. I want to be sure that there would not be a problem using the Vodafone rom.
Secondly, how do I install a safe kernel on my note as this is an appropriate kernel to use: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
I'm a little confused as some threads are in/out of date and I'm unsure which instructions to follow.
All help is appreciated,
Matt
It's up to you, I didn't do any of the wipe this, format that.
I was on a stock ICS rom, with a safe kernel, rooted.
I just downloaded the JB rom for my device, used PC-Odin, flashed the JB rom.
After flashing, I flashed philz kernel for this version of JB.
Some swear by the wipe, delete stuff. I have noticed NO ill problems with the device.
I guess if you do a lot of wiping, flashing it's best to wipe, delete before flashing, if you want to
make sure 100% of the old stuff isn't left behind. I'm pretty conservative with my device.
I only use stock roms, and other than rooting, I don't install the latest tweaks to squeeze every little
bit of performance.
My guess, I'm not familiar with the Euro roms/sim cards, but I'm guessing you will have to unlock it before
the rom would take the sim card (perhaps someone else can chime in on that).
My device was an unlocked Germany device (DBT) that I bought from Amazon, shipped to the States.

Currently, my device is using the stock ICS rom, with the stock kernel. It was rooted using the Exynos Abuse app and patched the CPU exploit, but I un-rooted it. After un-rooting, my device has began to randomly reboot, So I think I need to install a safe kernel and a stock JB rom. I hate Samsungs touchwiz rubbish.
Also do a search for dr.ketan, he has a pretty good wiki on how to do an update.
