[Q] A newbie here with GT I9305 needs instructions - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

hi members,
I was a Windows Mobile user, then iPhone user, and did flashing custom roms, jailbreaking, install cydia, sources all myself. Okay, recently i switched to Android GT I9305 from iPhone. After my painstaking research of how to install ClockworkMod and to root device. I believed that i got CWM and Rooted successfully into my device, and have installed Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, etc.
Here're my questions, hoping whom may generously offer help
My GT I9305 -- Baseband:I9305ZHALI2, BuildNumber:I9305ZHBLL3 purchased in Hong Kong
1. I'd like to flash a custom rom! Before to do so, i know i need to backup, but i don't know what exactly i need to backup with Titanium Backup
2. About custom rom-flashing, i don't fully understand of how(i did search all over, seems a bit messy and not clear enough or maybe my bad comprehension, anyway), sth like Regional, Networking, or any i concern..............as i a newbie wishing there would somebody give out a Really Detailed Instructions
3. As my device has been installed CWM and Rooted. How do i reverse it to what it was like - Non modified, brand new? Please share a piece of information if you know well.
As Android is far more complicated than Windows Mobile and iPhone for sure. I really hope somebody out there give me a hand
Lastly, i apologize for this long annoying thread, and asking such stupid question again
Expecting some with broad knowledge...
Thank you so much

1) Titanium backup only does Apps. Contacts and messages will need another app.
2) Use the All-in-one tool kit. It has everything. In general, you need to push a kernel with CWM using Odin, then use CWM to install the custom rom. (Custom rom not included in the tool kit. Explore and see which one suits you. You maybe best suited for a lite rom to begin with).
3) There are stock images which you can flash via Odin to get back to stock. You will need Triangle away app to remove the flash counter.

Not true, Titanium also backs up messages, contacts, call logs, blue tooth pairings, wallpaper, accounts, etc

How? I can never get it to do that, even with a system settings backup (Full backup).
I always use a different app after losing all my messages during a rom swap once.

Sorry for my bad knowledge, what does mean "In general, you need to push a kernel with CWM using Odin, then use CWM to install the custom rom. (Custom rom not included in the tool kit. Explore and see which one suits you. You maybe best suited for a lite rom to begin with)"
May i ask for about flashing rom, i still don't know how exactly the way of doing it, could you guide me with flashing custom rom
Thank you so much

Try this , it;s great for beginners :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1942150
Just flash from Odin, no root required first...
Why use this Root Method? Well the main reasons are:
- You have a complete Odin Flashable ROM Package.
- No Insecure Kernels are used or required.
- You can flash these packages on Non-Rooted devices
- The Binary Flash Counter will NOT increase when flashing these ROM Packages.
- The Red Exclamation Mark will NOT appear at boot up.
- And finally, you only have to flash one file in Odin and you have a complete firmware including Root Permissions.
What Root Package is used in these ROMs?
- Busybox 1.20.2 (Newer ROMs)
- SuperSU 0.99 (Newer ROMs)

And you can also access a rooted, deodexed and zip-aligned ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1935570 or a pre-rooted, totally stock Nordic unbranded ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2112213
Even though I'm in Canada, I got one of the HK devices you did with the very same firmware. Since I don't really want the Chinese elements of the HK build, I went with the Nordic unbranded ROM.
Once you have root I'd also suggest getting Mobile Odin. You can flash any firmware in .tar format directly from your device and can inject root, busybox and Mobile Odin again, so you'll always have root. And, you won't advance the modified counter that voids your warranty. This doesn't work for .zip files though.

Rooting and installing custom roms

Hi !
I've got my new GN ! I'm so happy.
I want to use Stunner rom, but, before I start, I want to make sure everything is good :
- What is the best way to root a GN ? (I've downgraded official rom with Odin) ?
- What is the best way to install CWM ?
- What is Odin Mobile ?
There are a lot of tutos, but most of them are complicated (more than HTC Desire HD !). Samsung seems to have made a locked bootloader... How can I know what I can do ?
Thank you
Answers:
- Best way to root is Zergrush ( fully automated root+recovery )
- With Zergrush you'll get CWM automatically along with root
- Mobile Odin is an app for Android, it allows flashing new roms, kernel etc. directly on the device ( no PC needed in the process ).
There's an amazing tutorial by Dr. Ketan with all the links and files gathered in one place, you'll find it here:

Should answer all your questions. Happy flashing!
read
you should search before asking
For rooting, to avoid getting yellow triangles, use pre-rooted stock roms
and flash it on top. If you use no-wipe roms, your data will stay.
Once you do that you will have superuser access, search mobile odin from
the market or from the XDA forum and install it.
Search CF-root by Chainfire and download Cf-root kernel for your specific rom.
Use mobile odin to flash Cf-root and you will get CWM access.
(You can use computer odin to do all this, but it will add yellow triangle)
WIth CWM, you can flash pretty much any roms.
I recommand Rocket Rom.

Rooting A Stock UK Note - Risks, Removal of Apps and ICS Update Questions

I have a UK Galaxy Note and have a couple of questions:
a) Is 'rooting' as simple as running Easy Rooting Toolkit v1.0? (I have come from flashing a HTC HD2 which took a lot more work than simply clicking on one .exe)
b) Are the risks of 'rooting' as big as 'flashing' a new ROM in that the phone could become bricked (memory corrupted)?
c) For now, I only want to root my phone to remove the pre-installed apps. Would uninstalling any of the apps cause any problems with any part of the stock ROM?
d) Will a rooted phone with uninstalled apps prevent an official ICS update?
Hi there,
Before flashing a new rom get to know a few things first... Go through the thread of the developer who has uploaded the rom, you should know about installation procedure (which is very important) so that you don't end up with a costly paper weight and the features which are available/not working on the new rom. Then you may proceed with flashing a new rom. In your case, I suggest you go through this thread.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025....Here you will find a collection of stock roms with root so that you won't lose the original look of the rom, after which you can remove preinstalled apps with root unistaller etc etc(But be sure you don't touch the system apps which may crash the rom)... In case you want to revert back to the stock rom then you may find this thread handy....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025.....After you flash a rom with root your phone can't get any firmware upgrades and the only option is to revert back to stock rom....Hope you got answers to your questions....
Could someone else please answer my questions specifically?

A)Yeah.Rooting is simple.Just flash a pre-rooted rom(Development section) and flash cf-root kernel via mobile odin. But remember donot use pc-odin to flash any rom other than stockrom and the pre-rooted stock rom.
B)Yeah rooting is as risky as flashing because of involvement of kernel which need to be flashed.
C)Yeah Some apps might .A soft brick at the extreme. So do a nandroid backup and start experimenting with the apps.If it causes problem restore nandroid and you will return to the working state.
D)Nope.Removing system apps doesnot prevent ICS update. But it is not recommended to update whn rooted thru OTA or kies. Its safer to flash stock ICS through PC ODIN.
Finally confirm if your phone is N-7000 because I have not seen a uk-note till now...
A few questions
Hi Guys
I have a few questions to add if that's OK.
I just got my new note.. Sim free and in Ireland I had a Galaxy Nexus before and only had it two weeks, It was already rooted and flashed with another rom when I got it..
I'm not pushed on flashing a rom as i want to get used to the phone first.
I do want to root it to allow me to install apps I have downloaded on a nas drive that I have that I can access from anywhere.
My Model Number is GT-N7000
Android 2.3.6
Baseband N7000XXLA4
Kernel Version 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341
Build Number GINGERBREAD.XXLA6
I'm new to android so if anyone can point me to the easiest way to root and the full benefits that would be great..
Should I Root before I install apps? Or will a root not remove things I have installed? Apps? Pics? Messages ect..
Can I use Easy Rooting Toolkit v1.0?
Thanks In Advance

Thanks for this . Would you think that an official OTA (or kies) ICS update would get ride of some of the pre-installed samsung apps and offer a cleaner stock android? If so, I might hold out for this.

Not sure of using ota or kies because Both are just crap and have never used for ages!!!!ODIN the best way to flash any stock rom.So through odin,Your old samsung apps are replaced with new ones but not user apps as far as this new ICS goes. But it is all good to do a factory reset after flashing any rom to avoid any problems later. But by doing this, you lose all your user apps

[Q] How do I dump my branded ROM so that I can later restore it w/o a trace.

I've seen some questions related to that, but none so far managed to help me.
I'd like to start tinkering with custom roms but are afraid eventual warranty claim can be refused by the operator service center based on contents of ROM other than ones pushed by OTA.
The rom is a branded for particular operator with no chance of finding it in the wild, so I'd like to dump it first.
Here's the data:
2.3.6
Modem: N7000XXLB2
Kernel: 2.6.36-N7000XXLC1-CL1003701
Version: GINGERBREAD.XXLC1
CSC: N7000PLSLB1
The numbers look quite generic, is operator branding/customization restricted to some easily restartable partitions? What about simlock?
Best regards,
DS.
Go to www.sammobile.com and find any stockrom rom with a letter K at the last end, K means kies and its official. If you use those official rom to flash it, it will not produce binary count or yellow triangle that will void your waranty which means, whatever official rom you use it is covered with waranty. You dont need OTA or KIES to be able to claim your waranty provided you know how to use the pc odin or if rooted you can use also the mobileodin from google market were you can get it to flash any official rom you want.
+1 (Do not backup and restore a stock rom thru Nandroid). flash stock rom thru PC odin as mentioned above.
Thanks a lot guys!

Just answering myself for potential searchers:
No, it's not possible to do non inference GNote ROM backup. Every way taints your device but some of these traces can be later removed. Cleanest way to restore is really installing full (wipe) stock rom through PC odin, (but beware, reverting from stock ICS can be potentially dangerous.)
Why?
Backing up requires CWM kernel or root and one can't introduce either without a trace. The closest to nontrace way is to install some brick safe CWM equipped kernel using PC odin and do nandroind backup. In a you will trigger Samsung custom kernel binary counter (formally voids your warranty, yes, that's what you wanted to avoid), but apparently
that one can be reverted using Chainfire's triangle away utility. Welcome to the world of adventure!
Restore:
1. Install the very same kernel you used to make backup (avoid PC odin - your options are either CWM or mobile odin).
2. Reboot in recovery
3. Restore backup
4. Wipe cache
5. Install stock kernel
5. Reboot.
Never ever do any wipes / restores / formats / update.zip if your device is running stock ICS kernel!!
The safest way to avoid deadly mistakes and compatibility problems is always installing the same safe kernel (one that comes with CWM, most do) then reboot into recovery before doing any cwm stuff, install stuff, then (as last step) install kernel that works with rom on the device.
CM9 - CM10 - STOCK ICS - STOCK GB kernels are incompatible with each other and will cause your device to hang during bootup if mismatched with installed ROM.
I ultimately installed prerooted gb rom on the device and then loaded some ICS rom, loosing most personal data in the process (titanium backup does a lousy job restoring GB data on ICS). I avoided triangle and will use PC odin to restore it to some stock ICS if I need to return the device.
backup efs, root current install and check toolbox thread from drbketan on how to. Keep it at multiple locations.
To go back, you need to have a tar file, in www.sammobile.com of current version rom, belonging to that csc. You can take a version higher, if it exists at all there. If not but Kies does have update, you might need to get the temp rom file. This is tricky.
Then ultra clean install, on safe kernel (flashed clean way with mobile odin or ktool), reboot recovery, wipe everything (factory, cache, dalvik), then in mounts (take out external sd) format all except efs. Again only on safe kernel.
Boot into download mode, flash throught pc odin the downloaded rom, with pitfile(original obtainable in ketans thread sticky section development, your rom might be there to)
Reboot, check csc, imei pcodes, if they are altered or not available, you need to root again, put them back (efs backup) and reflash rom.
This should be the cleanest way of going back to a near factory condition.
Some traces may remain, but not much. All data is lost btw.
all at own risk.
edit:see next comment for rom file. I think dr ketans got the right one.

[Q] New GT-I9000 - what to do

Hi guys I have just got a new (to me) GT-I9000 that was on T-Mobile and has been unlocked by the previous owner. It's spec is:
Firmware 2.3.3
Baseband version I9000XXJW4
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9000BOJV8-CL273008
Build number Gingerbread.BOJV8
32GB SD Card
I have test connected it to ODIN in Download Mode (3 button press) after giving up on Kies !
1. Should I Root it, and if so how. I have read various articles on here but don't want to brick it due to using the wrong Code/Version
2. Should I back up everything, image etc onto the SD card, if so what method do I use to do that
3. Should I stick with this ROM or are there better/newer ones out there I should flash .. if so which versions and how ?
Apologies for the simple questions, but step by step recommendations would be most helpful so I don't mess things up.
thanks
1) I really recommend rooting it, or installing a custom kernel (like Semaphore). You will get a lot more options to play around with, but more importantly: built in Voodoo Sound.
Here's a guide you can follow if you'd want to flash or just root/flash kernel. If you were to flash a kernel, you just open Odin and put the downloaded tar into PDA and hit Start after plugging in your phone (be sure to matching version).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
2) If you're referring to backing up apps and etc. I personally use Mybackup Root + SMS backup & restore. Also, syncing everything with Google, like contacts. Flashing with Odin does not erase your SD-card but for safety reason I always backup my files to a computer.
3) If you prefer stock/Touchwiz I would suggest you stick with stock GB, maybe XWJW8 which is the latest one? If you'd like a customized GB rom I recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1689513 which is JW7 with some extra tweaks and Galaxy S3 theme.
You could also go with ICS/JB if you want the latest Android versions. Hope everything works out for you!

[Q] Official upgrade + root + CWM

Hi, I have Galaxy Note GT-N7000, Android version 2.3.6, baseband version N7000XXKK5, kernel version 2.6.35.7-N7000XXKKA-CL726566.
Phone is previously rooted (I doed it after buy) and CWM Manager v3.0. Now I want to upgrade Android version to some newer, but I dont want new or custom ROM, I want to use just this official Samsung upgrade through system menu. Can I do this? Do my phone stay still rooted and still with CWM or I must root it again (or is this possible after upgrade)? What about installed apps and their settings?

Your rooted your device, so the upgrade to newer official version "through system menu" isn't possible.
Save your apps/settings with Titanium Backup, and of course make a complete backup of your system first in recovery.
Then download a stock rom (JB 4.1.2) from sammobile.com for your country. Install it with PC Odin. After that you can root it again with PhilZ kernel (search for his thread in the Development Forum).
At last you can try to restore apps from the TB backup (but I would make a clean install of all apps).

But I understand that this JB 4.1.2 isnt stock rom but instead custom rom. I dont see it in stock roms list. There are all 2.3 versions. I dont trust custom roms and furthermore I cant accept apps reinstall because I have 50 buyed apps, many of them very complex settings like macro programming platforms with lots of programming jobs made by myself. I was understand that I can also revert root to unroot without ROM install. Dont remember but some app allows this unroot operation. And when I make my phone unroot, then I can upgrade through system menu, right?

There are many JB 4.1.2 releases from Samsung for a lot of countries.
If you can't "accept" reinstalling your apps: stay on your version.
Unrooting might give you the update but: the risk that you'll loose your very complex settings when upgrading from 2.3.6 to 4.1.2 is high.
I repeat: make a nandroid and make backups of your apps and settings with TB. Then you can simply try whatever you want.

Thanx......, I have already TB installed and I make regular backups and also CWM backups. Is there some links to JB4.1.2 official stock ROMs? Which method is better then - put this new stock ROM and root phone OR unroot, upgrade officially and again root? Are those operations safe? I mean, can I in any time restore previous state of phone with CWM? I only made backups with CWM but never tried restoring.
I gave answers or infos to all of these questions in my first post.

Sorry, but that's not true. If you can't find the N7000 firmwares on this website I think it might be better to stay with your unchanged device. And if your country (whatever it is) isn't listed then maybe as a Rom for the region (example SEA roms).
