[Q] How to get into recovery with broken Volume+ button - Motorola Droid and Milestone Q&A, Help & Troublesh

So my volume+ up button recently broke and I can't get into the recovery to flash roms now. In cyanogen mod I could just hold power, choose reboot, then choose recovery and it would do it automatically. Then I flashed miui and it doesn't automatically go into recovery so now I'm stuck. What way can I get it to automatically load the update.zip? I can use 'adb reboot recovery' but it wont make it load the update.zip it just sits at the triangle with exclamation mark.

This should do the trick:
Code:
mkdir /cache/recovery
echo '--update_package=SDCARD:update.zip' > /cache/recovery/command

That gets the phone to recovery, not to load the update.zip.

Vol down button broken, other methods of flashing/rooting??

So my vol. down button has broken on my captivate. In stock recovery it wont allow you to cycle through the menu by hitting volume up(the volume button that works). In order to root typically you have to scroll down one selection and select re-install packages to install SU, but seeing as how my volume down button is broken I cant do that. . . So are there any other ways to get root so I can flash back to cm7? Or even a method of simply replacing stock recovery since CWM recovery allows you to cycle through the menu by hitting volume up? As of now I'm a slave to stock, and it's no fun
I am not 100% sure... But can't you use the adb console and do what you need?

Thank you for confirming this for me. I was away from the computer and haven't had to use ADB in a while.
For anyone who is wondering. I found a way to root without the use of the volume buttons. By using a very convenient application. Here is a link to the site on how to do it.

Try holding it down for less time. When you see the Samsung screen let go. If you hold for too long it may just restart.

if your phone can turn on normally, try to use adb command.
install adb sdk in the PC, then run command through it.
>adb shell
>adb devices (see if the phone is detected by adb)
>adb reboot recovery
I used superoneclick to root ill try adb in the morning as its half past 12 now lol will post after

I'm using TWRP on my captivate as a recovery, and while i was flashing my rom, I wiped everything, and didn't make a nandroid
Now my phone goes straight to TWRP and I can't boot to download mode to restore with Odin.. Any help would be appreciated
Mount USB in recovery and load a new package to flash. You cannot flash a stock image from recovery.

If you want recovery mode, do this:
1. Pull your battery
2. Put the battery in
3. Hold both the volume up and down buttons
4. Insert the USB
5. You are now in DL mode!

Thanks for the reply!
Unfortunately, my TWRP has problems with mounting, and my phone does not join in recovery mode... The only package I have in my internal SD is CM7 which I was trying to flash after using Team Nyx's ICS, but the problem is, when flashing, TWRP gets an error and my package will not flash (it's a mounting error with emmc). Also, I've tried about 4 different key combinations and can't get my phone into download mode, it just boots straight into recovery.
I guess there is no "reboot download" option under advanced like in cwm recovery. And i'm not sure if you could use ADB to reboot to download mode because of the ics.
Last resort, check my sig below if u r on a pc for links on how to make a Jig or where to buy one.

I'm a complete android noob, so I'm not sure how to use ADB on my pc to get my phone into download mode, and also, I no longer have an OS running on my phone, and I don't think you can reach ADB shell unless you have your phone in USB Debugging mode.

No recovery Mode

Anyone know how to get into recovery mode, seems there's no way to get in there. Tried vol-up Home & power button but nothing works.

Can you explain more details.
No adb-windows.exe this directory.
And what we do?
Read the build file damn.. we have full access to recovery .. on a powered on phone... forget the recovery ..
# Enable RecoverySystem to emit "factory-reset" reset string
# instead of "recovery" when doing a factory reset. This is
# useful when implementing factory reset without the entire
# recovery framework.

Sry my harsh words
Recomend wiping phone before flashing anything to avoid errors , fc and bootloops from the settings meny.. there is NO button combination

If you do the adb reboot recovery just once you should be able to boot into recovery by holding Power + Menu buttons.
Are you sure?
Well I'm not a 100% if that's what you mean.

Another method
1. Up the new rom that is rooted by odin. That's mean your phone has rooted
2. You install quick boot app from the market play. Then open quick boot and hit recovery
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
yeah, it also works with rom toolbox (-> rebooter -> reboot in recovery) and rom manager (-> reboot in recovery).

Does CWM recovery use the home button? I thought it uses the power button for confirmation instead.

The easiest way is to find a touch recovery that can be flashed using odin. Otherwise ask around in the kernel threads and see if any one of them use the power button instead of the home button.
