why is Android terminating opera unnecessarily ? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I spend a lot of time reading on opera mobile and if I get a call in between opera Is closed by the system and I have to load all my pages again.it's pretty annoying, is it possible to stop this force closure of opera ?
my observation -
I've noticed that if Iam doing something intensive like steaming videos or downloading stuff opera doesn't crash during calls, but instead if Iam on a simple page like google it's terminated. so Iam guessing that when Iam on a simple page for a long time the phone is underclocked automatically and opera process is killed by Android when I receive a call as it can't take all that load in an underclocked state .
Do you guys think that underclocking is what's causing these crashes ?

Yeah as long as I know. Thats android managing the RAM and clearing it when it thinks the running app is not being used
Sent from GNOTE - The Indisputable Beast of Android World

So am guessing there is no workaround to make opera stay on no matter what other process is running ?

. Thanks that was really helpful lol

check your battery saving setting make sure they are off

May be there are apps in the play store which will prevent user defined apps getting killed by the os.
OR
Install V6 SuperCharger and add opera mobile to Bullet Proof Apps List.
If you are using franko kernel, be careful just use BulletProof. Donot supercharge or use kick ass kernelizer. (I had random reboots.)
Hope it helps.

I don't know why bulletproof apps is not working for me

Hi,
It is possible that after a period of no system resource use by Opera, the system would be terminating the application to conserve resources.
What kenel and ROM are you using? There are task manager apps available of the market in which you can mark certain apps not to be terminated. You can give those a shot as well.
Consider shifting to Chrome...i use it a lot and have not experienced the problem you have described for Opera.

I often face this issue too. While watching videos, and with multiple wondows open, Opera crashes.
Criskelo 4.04 ICS LRK v11.2, LRK Modem, speedmod k3-13 kernel, Carrier: AT&T (US)

fix permissions if you have a cwm kernel,
that doesnt fix it then download phantom of the opera, watch it and wait till the fat lady sings. No fat lady sings?
Continue, delete data, uninstall opera, reinstall,(proper way, not through recovering)
Bug reproducable? Check logcat, and submit together with bug to Opera so they can fix from Opera end.
It may be a rom issue, so list rom, versions and such as well as opra versions. lol.

Serious bug in JI6 browser? Analysis

The browser in JI6 feels extremely laggy compared to the browser in previous firmwares. Scrolling is sometimes unusually choppy and going to the bookmarks page often takes a second. You might even see your home screen reload after browsing some heavy pages and then pressing the home button.
I started wondering if there was a memory leak in the browser, so I navigated to some pages that seem really laggy in the JI6 browser and checked the task manager. Sure enough, the browser is using 90-100MB of RAM at times and forcing other apps out of memory. If you want to try it for yourself, browse pocketnow.com (really laggy), engadget, or android central for a minute and then open up the task manager and take a look.
In an effort to figure out what was causing this, I have disabled plug-ins, uninstalled Flash 10.1, cleared caches, disabled javascript, and changed several other settings. While slightly less laggy, none of that has fixed the problem.
To make matters worse, I just received a notification warning me that database storage is low. I started browsing around and found a ~90MB file in /dbdata/databases/com.android.browser/app_thumbnails/ that comes back very quickly after I delete it. Not sure if that's the file causing the database storage to fill up or not, but it seems suspicious.
Also worth noting is that when pressing the back button in the browser it loads the previous pages instantly, almost like it keeps previous pages in memory. It wasn't like that in the browser from older firmwares. Wondering if that's what's causing the insane memory usage and lag.
Update
Looks like this is a known (by the community at least) bug that's also present in recent Froyo leaks for the i9000.
It seems to be a system level bug as it affects some other browsers like Dolphin as well.
I've noticed the same thing, but I kind of expect some aspects of the ROM to have debugging and/or logging turned on seeing as this is a leaked build.
Give it time and I'm sure someone will get this sorted out.

I can confirm that the browser in all the recent 2.2 leaks has some serious random memory issues causing close of almost all background apps and becoming very laggy and choppy.
Seems like either a serious memory leak or some other memory management issues.
This is not related to flash 10.1 at all as when i disable flash this still happens.

Would using a third party browser be any different? Gonna try out Dolphin or Skyfire in a bit once I get cog2.2 running.
So I guess the recently leaked (thanks to DesignGears and source) build is no newer than the previously leaked i9000 builds. Can only hope Samsung clears this up before official release.

Dolphin has the same problem so the bug must be in memory management or some kind of framework that both browsers use. Haven't tried Skyfire.
I am using Dolphin Browser HD and it does not seem to clear the memory issues.
Uses 145!! MB on the full pocketnow.com site before eventually FC'ing.
That's pretty rediculous.
I also ran into an issue where a pop up would say "No Internet Connection" and would ask me if I want to retry or ignore it, but if i didn't choose any option, the page would still load. Very annoying. This only happened to me while I was on 3G. Didn't try on wifi though. Anyone else run into this problem?

Yes, and it's very annoying. Somewhat unpredictable too. That and my cell data has been cutting out a lot for no reason, regardless of signal strength.
As far as I can tell, all the standard at&t radios suck. Can't wait to get a HSUPA radio & kernel running again. Faster speeds, and for me, better reception. Almost makes me want to go back to 2.1.
OOPS! I tried replacing libwebcore.so with the one from the G2 in an attempt to get to the bottom of this. Can you say boot loop? LOL, time to reflash and try something else. Don't worry, I have a better idea this time.
I noticed this as well and mentioned it in DG's thread. I noticed that the image quality is much higher than on 2.1 and the browser becomes especially choppy on pages with a lot of images on them. Definitely not flash-related.

Did you mean it refreshes pages when you switch to other apps?
That happens when it gets killed. if your VM heap size is set to 48 try lowering it to 32. This helps a lot.
Opera is easily the smoothest and best performing.. But I refuse to use it as a primary... They neglect time and time again to add one simple feature and never do.
DISABLE PAGE OVERVIEW.. It's so god damn annoying having to zoom in every time you load a page or refresh one.

I only use Opera, I've even frozen the stock browser with titanium.
About that problem where opera gets killed, that happens if minfree values are very aggressive.
Use root explorer to go to /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters and edit the minfree file there
Replace the values there with these:
1536,2048,4096,5120,8192,10240
That should hopefully solve the problem.
Many thanks I'll try it now

Just got Note - problem with browser tabs

So I just got the Note recently and so far I'm liking it (came from Iphone 4).... BUT, 1 thing that has GOT TO CHANGE!!! Is..... when I open stock browser and open tabs, if I close the browser and then go back to it my tabs are all gone!!! And it just shows home page...
Has anyone figured this out?? I haven't installed any task manager stuff. I need to get this fixed though. Is there a fix for this?
I've tried searching this forum and google but don't see much info. Most of the stuff I see says to uninstall task killers, but I didn't install anything just stock task manager for the Note.
I've tried different browsers also but none of them really seem to keep the tabs open, it is very annoying
Any ideas?
bump for friday!!!
This is more of a workaround.
Instead of exiting the browser with the back button, press the home button. When you go back to the browser (by long pressing the home button to access the running tasks) the tabs should still be there.
Probably best to have put this in the Q&A section
Thanks for the reply!! But this is what I'm doing... even that doesn't work. In fact, I don't use the back button too much, I mostly use the home button...
There is no fix for this? Can someone tell me the cause of it? Is it something to do with a Samsung task manager? Is there a new task manager I can install or seomthing I can tweak in the OS? Perhaps seomething in the browser config or task manager config?
I don't have this problem... especially with Dolphin Browser. Those bloody tabs persist after reboots. It is a pain in the arse to get rid of them, you have to kill them manually.
Any body else know a fix??
Maybe I'll try firefox see how that works. I did d/l dolphin but haven't tried yet
You can install ZDbox, it is an app that was developed by an Xda member. It has a task killer incorporated within the app where you can put the browser in the protected apps by long pressing and adding it. After you do this, the app will not be closed if you kill all other apps.
Let me know if it resolves the issue. (it is available for free in the market)
Why are you using stock browser anyway . It's crap . I never managed to download anything with it . And after " download " it can't parse it . Use OPERA MOBILE . ( NOT mini ) . You'll thank me later

Ok I tried ZDbox, however the browser doesnt even show up in the process list of ZDbox lol... It shows up in my task manager, but not in ZDbox.
I will just use a different browser... I see so many browsers, which is best? How does Opera compare with Firefox? I kinda like Maxthon also, but it isn't saving my tabs either
Download Opera. It's the fastest browser, as it uses hardware acceleration.
Its not witht stock browser. If you are opening too many apps and then press Home key, the Android system will put the browser to sleep but it keeps it in memory. If you launch another app at this point which asks for more RAM than there is available, Android will start exiting the apps that are residing in the memory. When that happens, the browser could also be force closed by the system. Dunno how to fix that since I am not a dev.
If you use other browsers, you wont have the GPU acceleration and hence smoothness, in my opinion.
Just my 2 cents.

The two of you should talk: his tabs don't stay and yours are hurting your ass
So how is everyone with the Note fixing or getting around this? I'm trying Opera now...
Well, after using the Opera browser... i gotta say I like it. EXCEPT it doesn't remember my tabs either!! It seems like none of the browsers are working right with tabs... unless i'm doing soemething wrong? Is there any way to remember tabs in opera mobile?
When I press the back button on Dolphin it ask if I want to close the browser or minimize it.
What would be nice is.... like Safari on iphone... if you kill it, it still opens up with all your tabs... or a desktop firefox, it always allows you to restore your previous session/tabs...
I HAVE to keep tabs open, instead of re-opening 5 pages/tabs evertime the browser just feels like forgetting them
Anybody know about the great Note browser mystery??
How long after you press home are you checking, if you leave it in sleep mode for some time, android will kill the high power consuming processes and that is why your tabs are not getting stored...
I think what you want is a browser which remembers your previous tabs and reload all of them whenever you open a browser.. i dont think stock or dolphin or opera has such an option, did you try the mobile version of firefox.. maybe it remebers tabs...
And to those people this is not about multitasking... it is just that he wants the browser to remember his tabs so that it can reload itself everytime a new instance opens...

YES!! thank you..thats exactly right! i've tried so many browsers so far and have yet to find one that does!! It seems so weird to me that none of these browsers have a session restore or tab restore option. let me try firefox... i haven't really tried it yet. BUT i just read firefox for andoird DOES have hardware acceleration... I'M ON IT! will report back
After using FF for a bit...I can report it is the same as other browsers There is no session restore and it closes my tabs also. When I launch it, it shows me my "previously closed tabs" but it won't let me restore them all......I have to click on each one to restore
So this is still a aproblem

problem with browser

Hey, since I have galmin, I noticed some weird behavior of browser. No matter what rom I'm using, it closes by itself. right, i forgot to add that it happens only on stock browser, and using something else is not a solution for me i just want to know if it happens to someone else too, and why it happens. it's not like browser closes itself every day, maybe twice a week tops? so it's not bothering me that much. and no, i'm not using any scripts or battery savers.
its on stock browser only..happened to me mostly on CM7 builds idk why..now am using andro-id so its a lil less..but it deffinitely happens..and happened in froyo too..Its not regular problem but happens sometimed like 2/3 times a week..So never thought of it as a serious problem

I guess that bcause the stock browser use a too high amount of ram, so it will close itself if system is in low memory state.

To much image to load its make stock browse lag then close its self, because browser make a big chace on system.
I always found this problem while browsing, not only on GingerBread, you can found it on ICS to.
do reset chace and cookies before browsing, and if the stock browser feel little lag than before, back to homescreen and delete it from recent app then open it again. you cant try this method on gingerbread because GB doesnt have recent app layout.
Recent app layout on ICS looks like taskmanager but not same with taskmanager.

[Q] need to stop walkman getting killed

hey mates, many times i see walkman stops playing, i think it is just getting killed for low memory? in that case is there any tweak i can apply to tell android i don't want walkman getting killed? i guess there's some tweak involving editing of build.prop?? :crying:
The build prop edit doesn't work. Get system tuner and set custom ram kill values or else get ram manager and select high multitasking.
Sent from my C5302 using Tapatalk 2
can't get it, bro? how to do it using sys tuner can u plz elaborate the process?
I can't think it will be low memory - the SP has plenty of RAM to run JB and some serious multi-tasking.
I imagine it's an incompatible app or some setting that has been changed.
From past experience I know that some custom kernels with a deep sleep profile can be very agressive (killing background processes) when the screen is off.

no bro, it kills walkman when screen is on, usually when i use chrome to do a lot of surfing. anyways i have installed supercharger script!! :victory: let's see if it solves the problem.
I have the issue of the Sound effects of the Walkman geting killed off if I do some serious facebooking or G+'ing on the phone. The Walkman app itself still works, however the sound effects app gets killed and there's no way to get it back except a reboot.
Killing and restarting Walkman doesn't help.

Well I've only had the SP for 6 days, so haven't really put it through it's paces. I think I read somewhere that the default out of memory app killer is set at 200mb which is probably too conservative. Even so for it to kill an in use process rather than a cached one does suggest a bug of some kind.
I came from a phone with 512MB ram - so far the SP is exceeding my expectations (especially when it comes to multi tasking). Of course facebook is a bloated app that doesn't seem especially well optimised for android, I try to avoid it - it's possible that apps that cache a lot of media might cause trouble?
i have installed supercharger script and it seems to resolve this error.
I know this is a bit of an old thread but I'm having a similar, and at times worse problem. I also think the default task killer has some bug or something because it kills the walkman app every now and then while I'm listening to music. I installed the Xposed framework and the App Settings module to set some apps to be 'Residents' and that has worked very well with some apps. The really big problem is that, there are times where the phone literally closes an app that I'm currently using while it's still visible, I've had Chrome close on me very often and sometimes the keyboard doesn't appear when I want to write something, which makes me believe that somehow the keyboard app/service was killed. I'm hoping that if CM or some other custom ROM gets released, it'll have better memory management, but for the time being, is there any way I can quarantine a Sony service or app to stop this from happening so often?
I am using the latest .245 firmware, rooted and with unlocked bootloader, and I've never installed any third-party task manager/killer. I'm pretty sure it's not that I'm running out of RAM because I usually have around 200MB free, sometimes a lot more.

I've had a similar issue with the Xperia T. Listening to music through Bluetooth, and browsing using the stock android browser (not chrome), the music used to stop and it would loose the stopping point and reopening walkman shows the music as if after its been refreshed. Only change that happened was I stopped using the two of them simultaneously for a longer period of time
Btw, this was on the original ICS fw, for Xperia T. Can't comment on it on JB as I havent put it through the same scenario.
But RAM used to be around 667MB when on ICS and ~800MB for JB on Xperia T

Its the OOM groupings that are a little f-ed up in SP. This happens with Pandora and Spotify for that matter too..
Well nevermind what I said, if anything something seems a little worse now, my launcher keeps randomly crashing and I'm getting a constant weird notification about a failed bugreport. Supercharger scripts says that everything is working 100% but I think somehow the phone is still managing to kill its services. It's driving me a little crazy and I'm not sure what to try, I'd reflash the stock ROM and start from scratch but it didn't work well before, that's why I started installing other apps...

I posted a services.jar in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2414351
Try that out. I have not got a single redraw even after opening Facebook, Chrome (2 tabs), Dolphin, Youtube
Currently working on a fix to help solve the background apps from being killed.
Let me know how everything works out for you in my thread

Ok I might give it a try but there's one specific thing that's driving me insane. I've already installed Xposed framework, V6 Supercharger and Crossbreeder. They all seem to be working correctly and some things work fine, but my keyboard keeps disappearing very very often. I don't know why, I click on a textbox to write something and as I start typing they keyboard just goes away and doesn't come back for a while, I don't even know why or if it has anything to do with RAM (which I doubt). I'm using the Kii Keyboard from the Play Store and I've bulletproofed it with the Supercharger scripts, and it does appear with an OOM priority of -17. I've tried reinstalling and also using the default Xperia keyboard, but it keeps happening.
Any input is appreciated, or if someone knows a way to maybe make a log or something to identify the culprit.
It gets killed. Happens seldom with my SwiftKey.

Me too. Bulletproof with supercharger, ram manager Pro and freeze all not important and ram eating apps like Google play and other big apps with titanium backup. Remove not used bloatware. Nothing help. Bulletproof working before by all other Android Handys I have or had. Sorry man. Think we must wait for cm10 or maybe by jb 4.3 bulletproof work. I can cry beautiful big handy and no music together with chat and or other apps. By me helps sometimes before I open an app I bring Walkman in the foreground. Bad build Sony

If you visit the themes and apps section. You will find a modded services.jar which will stop your home launcher from being killed. Currently working on the team management. So expect a fix by next week. Cheers!
