How do you downgrade to zv7?
Use LGPNST Method or however you spell it. Its in the development section and it includes all instructions for downgrading. Or you can wait of an all in one method to root VZ8 to come out.
If your new to this whole root thing, I'd wait because if you don't follow the downgrading instructions exactly, you could cause problems witb your phone.

Can we root 5.6.894? My girlfriend let the ota happen and the d3 lost root. It was previously rooted and i have a nandroid backup after root and bone stock. Can i revert it back or is there more to it than that?

5.6? Yes you can just reroot?
I beleave they fixed the patch to root it on the update. Download rootkeeper from the market.

they fixed the exploit in 5.7.894, but its still open in 5.6.890
Looks like you might have to SBF the phone back to 5.6, root it, apply perm root, and go from there… it's going to be a pain, but it'll get you back to being rooted.

Jason, have you tried DooMLoRD's root method yet? (Filename DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip)
(I believe currently it is at version 3.0 and it can be found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653)

Can someone post a step-by-step method on how to update to. 902 and keep root. The more detail the better. I only ask this because this is my second bionic and I dont want to brick it.
Thanks in advance!

I did unr3l3as3droot and forever root first. Then I did the path saver. Then I flashed 896 and 901. After that, I downloaded the 902 ota but didn't install it. Moved it from /cache to the external SD card. Then I turned the phone off. To turn it back on, I hit both volume up and down as I powered it back on. That took me to a different menu that I can't currently think of the name but that is where you will flash 902 at. Remember that the 902 update has 901 in its file name when flashing. If you come across a triangle thing, hit volume up and down and the update will flash.

Easier root method...
There is an easier way then this now...
1. Install update
2. Use the Droid 4 exploit found at vulnfactory.org/blog/2012/02/11/rooting-the-droid-4-a-failed-bounty-experiment/ and yes it works for the Bionic on 5.9.902 (i just got done using it)
3. Look at your phone.... its now rooted.
And everyone who uses it should donate to djrbliss and prove that the Android community can support such a valuable asset!

I just did the OTA over wireless and did the update and I kept ROOT.
I did un-froze all the apps I had frozen with titanium backup before applying the update.
Still have root...
In my case, the update wouldn't install. I had to go all the way back before I could go forward.

If you lose root during the update, see here to get it back.
here is a nandroid backup I made with all of the VZW and most of the LG stock apps removed to free up space. (ROM is rooted)
Directions:
1. Download file to SD Card
2. Unzip to External SDCard in /clockworkmod/backup/
3. reboot into CWM
4. go to backup and restore
5. select advanced restore
6. Then select the backup you just downloaded
7. select Restore system

Im assuming this requires being on zv8 in some form? Or can you flash it over zv7?

Flash which tot? I was under the impression that you can't get rooted zv8 by flashing the tot, only by doing the aio and doing the ota update.
Sent from my VS910 4G
Do I just download the Z7 .tot file to the SD and flash as a normal rom?
No. Read my forum in development. There's inscructions in how to flash the tot

Got it. I downloaded Z7 stock rom and then was gunna allow the update to install automatically, I guess I should have downloaded the Z8 rom to save some time?
oh well..
Alright, made it back to Z7 and did the OTA update to Z8..
now how do I root and get CWM again?? That ALLINONE executer does not work.

Start over from zv7 and read MT's easiest way to maintain root to zv8 inn the Dev section

Not sure which version it is V9? But I have been delaying it and delaying it for a few weeks and its starting to bug me. Is there a way to keep root through this yet? same as MT had for V8 using the verizon manual .tot program?
Check this thread. I have been avoiding the update as well, but it seems to have gotten more "insistent" of late.
I am downgrading using LNGPST, updating and then I plan to use this technique for root. Don't think you will end up with CWM, but I am not certain that I fully enjoy the value of CWM. Maybe I am just too new.

Hey guys, my phone keeps downloading that stupid update and then failing to install it, whats the proper way to get around this either to block it or to upgrade and keep root?
thanks!
To stop the update freeze the software updater. It may break blue tooth.
And everything for v8 works for v9. All aio's

So I need to...
1. install stock rom
2. Unroot
3. Do the verizon OTA to Z9
4. Reroot
5. CWM?
You can go this route.

After I used the tot I did a factory reset and then went to using the Easy Aio for v8 v9.

If you have cwm installed the ota will fail everytime. easiest method is to flash the v9 tot, then root, then cwm, then flash BO2.0. the issues come when ppl try to install cwm, ie install not taking. if that occurs, let me know and I can direct you on how to install cwm from the phone using terminal emulator.
the stock rom is not as efficient as BO. Plus no OC'ing and not as much tweaking. Most tweaks won't work OOB. Our stock rom doesn't have boot script support (init.d support) all scripts will need to be manually run at boot. battery life is different and tons of bloatware.

kk. My question was in order to flash the v9 tot do I need to unroot and install the stock v8 rom first? Or can the v9 tot be installed while rooted and using MT's ROM?
Yes. You can flash a tot over anything.
You will lose root and cwm.
