[Q] Speedmod kernel - bad lag when gaming. - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone.
I've been lurking around this forum for a long time and used alot of custom roms and kernels for my old trusty SGS2.
A month ago I decided to upgrade to the lovely GNOTE. I was and still am very satisfied with it, except for 1 thing. Battery life was nowhere near what I had on my SGS2. So I decidet to start tweaking it a bit.
To my great joy I found the Speedmog-kernel by hardcore and proceeded to install it. Everything works fine and batterylife really improved.
Now to my problem, when I'm playing f.ex Templerun I get really bad lag compared to when I was on stock-kernel. Trying to find what is causing it I have used to cpu-spy to see if it ramps up or not. and to my surprise I find that after playing templerun for about an hour I had 14 seconds on 1400 Mhz and the rest on 800 Mhz. No wonder it lags badly.
Is there a way to redeem this problem?
ps.
reason I'm posting here is because I'm not allowed to post in develpoment section yet.
Forgot to mention that I'm on stock LC1 and only custom is Speedmod K2-10 kernel

Why don't you experiment with some other kernels? AbyssNote also offers overclocking feature for heavy gaming. Don't know what it'll do for your battery life, though.
Franco kernel is also excelent.

You'd be shouted out of you underpants had you posted this in the dev section. Q & A is the proper sub-forum for this type of thread.

Thanks for your reply.
I think I'll give Francokernel a couple of days testing. Too bad though since i allways liked Speedmod on the SGS2.

CM7 + Kernel?

Hello everyone,
I am a newcomer to the O2X world. My previous device was an Xperia X10 and having that device for a long time it was fairly easy to follow the forums and know what route to go, which rom to get or kernel, etc.. Now being introduced to Rom Manager, and this phenomenal (to me) device its like starting all over again. I flashed to CM7.1 nightly (yesterday) and the device just only seems to get better and better, although being honest, I truly loved the Music App 2.2.2 had, as well as the camera. I tinkered around a little to get those to work without any success yet.
In any event, my real question is about the kernels... running CM7.1 nightly, what is a recommended Kernel to switch to? I am not looking to overclock the device as I feel it just isn't necessary (used to the Xperia), so Im just looking to get any fixes, tweaks, been hearing about Voodoo Sound etc to just solidify the phone.. might someone be able to point me in the right direction? I had been reading the forums for days now since I got the device but still haven't found what route to go as all the features are completely new to me.
Any help would much much be appreciated! and I must add, there are mixed reviews on the O2X but my take thus far, Im completely blown away.
vorkkernel and swiftextreme
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059910 - vork
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325183 - swiftextreme
vork is good in ironing out cm and showing off large score in tests like(quantrant etc.) while
swiftextreme is very good on batterylife
but I still prefer stock cm kernel
welcome to the o2x forums btw

hi, welcome
i stick to vorkkernel(normal version), you can get app to install in market for free.
i run it on 1,2 Ghz, with sleep profile in setcpu with 816Mhz.
gives me about 35hrs battery life and great speed in everyday use.
I am on CM7 with swiftkernel, [email protected],2GHz and I am really satisfied. I get 36-48h of normal use with 3G on and the 2x runs as hell.
Only drawback from the swiftkernel: You get a wakeup delay (1 sec.) because the kernel locks the cpu down to 256MHz when the screen is off. (Which results in a higher standbytime.
Hah, I remember my X10, used to run TripNraver MIUI on that does he even still make roms?
Anyway would stick to the stock CM7 kernel if i were you, least problems with that (no SOD, BSOD etc). On vork / swift problems keep popping up (for me at least). CM7 kernel no problems
I really dont have any knowledge about kernel!! pls help me
i am using cyanogen mod 7 and i installed swiftkernel by overclocking to 1.2 ghz wont it damage my phone??? pls do reply thank you very much in advance .....

You always take a risk when overclocking. With 1.2 it's not a big risk, but there's always one.
Thank you so much!!! can you pls tell me which kernel is good for daily use ??? i am using cyanogen mod 7 ??? when i installed swiftkernel .. i realized that it was automatically overclocked to 1015??? is this fine???
Yo...
I'm using CM Nightly's, in last week I did the install the Vork Kernel, I think so good to diary use.
Now I'm using the #201 with Vork Kernel, all ok. No BSOD and others bugs.
You can use SetCPU with personal profiles.
I'm using max 1216mhz and Profile's Screen Off: max 816 min 216. All ok in this time.
Already did one week, no problems with this.
Just had problem with #202 CM, in #197 and #201 all ok.
so bro if i am running MIUI , what do i need to do to overclock it??
sill any of these kernals be good enough or is there any specific kernal for miui??

There are many ROMs available in Development section with previews and detailed.
yeh i have read on many of them but i dont think its possible to read through all the top roms posts to guage users views
just looking for some personal opinions to what people are enjoying to use and not reading a thread full of problem posts
For me its checkrom v5.. Snappy and stable.. N great battrry too.

Hmmm.. Then i suggest you to wait for few more days. ICS is coming for us. as soon ics leak comes out , the most waiting CM9 will be ready for us.
Rocket rom is good if you like a speedy themed rom. Checkrom is also another good rom.used both

Clocks and voltage are kernel related.
If you want to oc and uv for yourself go for AbyssNote Kernel from angelom (which an out-dated one is included in the RocketRom from eyebee) since it has a clock frequency set range from 100-1704 MHz and a huge list of governors to choose from. Be careful though your phone can easily getting hot with this kernel by ocing it.
However it seems the franco.kernel is a little bit better for battery and has smoother animations while navigating through your phone with some third party launcher while suffering low fps in some games I've tested. I do not know the voltages for each frequency from franco.kernel. You can't change them either (with apps like voltage control or SetCPU).
cool i was thinking of waiting for the ics roms but i am very impatient and liek to fix things that arent broke
i will read up on some of these roms both speed and check sound like what im looking for
There is alot of good roms and developers here its hard to tell you which one is perfect it realy depends what direction you looking at stability battery life new futures etc... i personaly use Criskelo after long searching i found my perfect one good luck.
My favorites: Cassie's XL, Darky and CheckROM.
I could suggest You to try CheckRom, fast and reliable with Abysskernel 3.8 version 2.
If You want to try, a good rom is also Darkyrom 3.3 with Franciscofranco Kernel n.4 but I find the last one a little bit unstable even if a well developed kernel.
Just my 2 cents
gave in and am now playing with checkromv5 and just installed abysskernel see how these go , and oc'd it to 1600
Been with Rocket ROM since V1 until V22. Just flashed Criskelo 3 days ago and it's working superbly. Battery life is great!
So far, Criskelo rocks!
alpha never dies and abyssnote kernel v4.0 final
well i have no issues that i have noticed not sure on battery life yet if its better than stock or not will need a few days to see how it averages out
what benefits would rocketrom have over checkrom or is it just a personal preferance ?
checkrom v5..

[Q] 1780 MHZ overclock for galaxy note query

hello, xda people,
i am new in XDA and this is my first post. And it is a query about some Antutu scores where i saw galaxy notes clocked to 1780 mhz, 1768 mhz, etc; greater than the 1704 mhz i see on roms like rocket rom and romow rom. I am really new owner of galaxy note. I would appreciate some explanations. Thanks in advance.
Does it make a difference? The 1.2GHZ kernels for the ICS leaks are plenty fast enough, and honestly if you try underclocking your max speed to say 500-800mhz...you wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. Half the reason stock Galaxy Note feels so laggy is the painfully slow animations...but maybe that's just me.

Top benchmark scores?
thanks for the response, people.
i am just wondering if there are other roms or kernels that have higher clock speeds, or may be it's an ICS thing. lags will always be there even with high clocks. but i am wondering ( just saying) gadgets like PSP, which i had many years ago never had lags even if it was on CF or custom kernels or whatever those stuff were. I hope the laggy experience we get in the note will really be fixed to appreciate some sick animations or what not. well anyway, thanks a lot.
I cant even get over 1600 with AbyssNote
Whenever I get it more than that with SetCpu the phone works perfectly but as soon as I try a benchmark (Quadrant or Atuntu) my phone freezes on the cpu 1/8 part and I have to restart it... so how come you guys can go all the way to 1.78 ?
I am using rr22 and abyss note 4.2. My note can be set at 1704 MHZ. apps like games play very smoothly but of course battery saps fast. RR22 is a great rom. The highest point i got from antutu is about 7900, with abyssnote 3.9. I think abyssnote 3.9 is good, but i wanna try BLN that's why i installed 4.2... quadrant always crashes on my note. mate, it's just uberclock. overall performance on decent battery life is still the beast.

[Q] Best Galaxy Ace Overclock Frequancy... And something else thanks

Hey guys
I know their probably another thread out there with this in it but... Yeah. But go ahead troll me lol, im still a bit of a noob.:silly:
Anyways, i have a Galaxy Ace s5830. I have Beats with smooth sense ROM. I had it upto 883MHz Yesterday but after i turned it off then back on ROM Toolbox reverted it to 806MHZ. 883MHz seemed a lot faster even though some people get theirs close to 1GHZ
My phone afterwards rebooting had issues such as the phone becoming un-responsive when i was even doing nothing (maybe the overclock to 883MHz had some short term effect?) But the phone seemed fine after safely turning it off then back on several times. Still works perfectly i got scared when it started to become un-responsive. But it works well now i have also used pimp my ROM, and the scripts work like a charm. Especially the call quality one (it uses bravia engine or something?). But with pimp my ROM wi-fi and network tweaks it completely broke wi-fi saying wi-fi connecting... Then saying under the network name 'Error'. Dam it took so long to get the IP address then said error like i said lol
At the frequency 883MHZ the phone seemed stable and faster than ever before, i did change it in small increments
So just wondering, what is the safe and most reliable frequencies to set it at? I currently use 225Min and 806 Max. With the userspace governer.
I know the terms of ' Safe ' and overclock don't mix (sorta like water and my dads S2 :crying: ).
Im also considering buying a 2450MAH battery from ebay for about 5.99 AUD. Any suggestions on should it be okay and better? But i mainly would like to knwo about the overclcoking lol.
So yeah, basically what is a good frequency to set it at? Is 883MHZ okay? Am i going to fry it out or completely brick or damage the phone or cpu if i set it at 883MHZ? Would love to buy a new phone but i need to save im only 14
So yeah please help me and you could help others too. Please be welcomed to troll me
I plan on having this phone another 3-4 Months before i consider buying the S2 or Galaxy note when their cheap (like really cheap)...
Like i said please help, and feel welcomed to troll me when you do help :highfive:

That battery is a fake and has been confirmed as such. If you want a higher cap. battery get a 1500mAh or 1600mAh. I don't like messing with the clocking, good luck to you.
Thanks

Right now I am just using the stock one. I personally wouldn't change my battery to anything other than stock, but people have reported that 1500mAh or 1600mAh work well. I wouldn't use anything that has a higher capacity than that though. Also, if it's very inexpensive it's probably not real.
Clocking actually goes on the rom. I've seen people having OC over 1gHz & still stable with the mad kernel but I gave up clocking as I didn't see much of a difference & also underclocking started giving me FCs on some heavy apps while it was all fair in the unclocked state. And again, there's no such thing as a best frequency. You find your own values. What works well for him might mess up your phone rebooting all by itself. Stock batteries are always fine & they also keep you under warranty. Anyone ever wondered why the phone manufacturers didn't implement clocking as a part of it ? Stability is the word. I've seen here, I've seen there. East or west, stock is the best ! Try keeping as close to stock as possible, just to have that extra touch of safety & stability

Hello all.
I was reading this thread and became interested in overclocking. In my case my device is:
Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830L (labeled as GT-S5830 by CyanogenMod)
CyanogenMod-7.2.0-cooper stable (Android version 2.3.7)
Kernel 2.6.35.7-perf-CL882825 ([email protected] #21)
I was checking in CM settings -> Performance -> CPU settings that I could adjust min and max clockspeed, but in max frequency the maximum one is the same processor's speed, 800 MHz. So my kernel doesn't support overclocking.
After a search in the forums I found there are plenty of custom kernels for this legacy device. But I'm relatively new to the kernel world, so I wanted to ask you for advise. What custom kernel could I try for my device for overclocking? Or King Android, what custom kernel are you using?
It'd the first time I do the overclocking stuff, I'd like to try it to see if some higher quality mp4 videos (which are run by MX Player only in software acceleration) can run better, as well as some games and emulators.
I'm also kind of a noob as you can see. If you want to troll/scold me...
Thank you all.

Hi you can try FireKernel or BlackHawk kernel. Use the search function to find them easily. Both supports Overclocking and are made for CM7. [MAKE SURE THEY SUPPORT YOUR S5830L]
At the moment I'm with Democracy ROM which is based on unofficial CM7 and I don't really feel the need of overclocking. It is all smooth with firekernel at
Min 245
Max 806
Governor smartassv2
Sent from my... oh wait, who cares?
I did my search.
Maybe I forgot to mention I haven't installed a custom kernel before... Does the kernel come as a file itself, or along a CM7 custom rom? And if it comes as a file itself, how can I install it? I already mentioned what CM7 I have installed. It's the "official" stable one.
Would OCing help to improve videos and games performance? i.e, faster, no lag...
You can set it to whatever your phone can handle. Mine can't go past 844Mhz otherwise apps start force closing and such. If your phone is completely stable at 883Mhz then you're good.
As for the battery, no. It's a fake. Buy a 1500mAh like I did. Works like a charm and it brought 3. Lasts a little longer and it's really amazing. Had it for a while now. Still have one in the pack, only been using 2 when I don't get to charge my phone. Really handy.

OCing helps the phone over all. But remember, without much free ram, OC won't really change much. You need a balance of ram and CPU. Like me, I use swap and OC to 844Mhz. Even if it's a low OC, it's still better than nothing.
1. @SuperAce609: I have 104 Mb free RAM out of 278 Mb total RAM. Mine is Galaxy Ace S5830L with CM 7.2. Would OC work for me? Up to what frequency?
And how can you have 600 Mb of RAM? Is your device really an Ace?
2. There's still a doubt I haven't been able to find out myself: does the kernel come as a file itself, or along a CM7 custom rom? And if it comes as a file itself, how can I install it? I was suggested FireKernel or BlackHawk ones...
Any help?

1.- Every Ace is diferent..some Ace's can go up to 960 Mhz while other just 844 Mhz, the thing is: try it yourself overclocking in small jumps. Swap is a small amount of memory of your SD card, that Android use it like if where RAM, but decreases SD card life...
2.- Some Kernel came Built in on Some particullary ROM's but generally cames on a CWM Flashable zip; FireKernel & BlackHawk are specially for CM7; In my opinion FireKernel is the best... And there are others like Battery Extender Kernel or NimsKernel but these Kernel are only for Stock ROM's...
I hope you find useful my info...
Thank you, Blake2893.
Then there's just 2 doubts left, if you don't mind.
There's a fair number of custom CM7.2 roms with FireKernel in the developer forum. Is there one you or someone else could say is the best in terms of stability and least number of bugs? Or is that something I should test myself in the S5830L?
The Ace S5830/S5830L has 278 Mb total RAM by default. If I understand well, you're implying I could modify SWAP partition in order to increase RAM and, probably if lucky, with this make OC work better. How can I do that? Do I also need a custom kernel/rom for that?
The best stable Roms so far are the stock GingerBread based ones... but if you aks me about CM7 there a few like Apocalypse rom(ICS styled ROM) with the FireKernel that suports swap I think...
and for Swap you only need a Kernel with Swap enabled and a SWAP Partition on your Sd card...
lets see im fine and stable with 979 mhz without reboot for 9 hours
overclock is depend on your hardware
best over clock freq.

Kernels...

Which do you run, and how would you rate your experience with it?
So far avail kernels are
Stock,
AEL http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...pment/30-november-2014-n4-ael-kernel-t2961240
BioShock - http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...pment/kernel-bioshock-1-5-dec-4-2014-t2962744

Starkissed - http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/unified-development/kernel-dealers-choice-t2915824
Let's discuss it !
bump
The reason for this thread is to gauge personal experiences regarding battery life SOT and performance.
aftermarket kernels are supposed to extend on the experience of a stock kernel and make it better
yet on every kernel i try my battery life is decent, SOT is around 4-5hrs, performance is great
Stock kernel , battery life is insane, SOT has now broken 6.5hrs SOT (and i still have 30% left) and performance is decent-great , overnight i lost 1% during idle.
my OCD is killing me with stock kernel because there's nothing for me to play with, i want to go back to a aftermarket kernel but i need your opinion . thanks. (when i tried AEL 5.8 , i got SOT of 4 hours and 50 minutes, overnight i lost 10% during idle)
Thanks for your input-
I get what your saying with this thread but all that is gonna happen is trolls are gonna come in and bash the devs of the kernels their ROM devs don't support. Then it just gonna get worse. It not a good idea cause if enough bashing gets done then no Dev will make kernels and we all be rocking stock.

Why not take some time to visit each kernel thread individually and read through direct reports from users? I know it's a little more time consuming but there's no better way to Guage the strengths and weaknesses of a kernel or rom.
It all depends on the person using the phone. Each experience can be a little different. If stock is giving you great results then stick with it. I usually install a rom, debloat it myself and run it for a few days to see how it does. Then I try a custom kernel. Results may vary so sorry about the OCD thing but maybe you have an app or something causing the phone not to sleep. Or you play games? I'm not a big gamer but I do listen to music a lot. These devs try to make improvements for us and themselves but at some point you'll have to charge your phone lol.

Some users on AEL and Bioshock claim 6-7hrs of SOT which would be great and equal to stock kernel, but every version i've ran of both have gotten me just right around 4-5hrs of SOT with similar usage of 2 hours of bluetooth streaming, about 30 minutes of calls, text and social media all day.

My settings on kernel will usually be
Umbrella_Core or Bioshock
Zen or Row with 2048 mb of cache
turn off emmc and entropy
intellithermal if available.
Intelliplug
i don't overclock.
Hardlimit enabled
