Why do htcs always wipe when rooting? - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

Both my flyer and vivid are still stock and unrooted. Why? Because I have them set up the way I like them and don't wanna have to re download everything and set them back up again. What's the deal with htcs? My captivate was as simple as plug it into the pc, click "root".

Uh, they don't need to be wiped when rooted.
They need to be wiped when the bootloader is unlocked (granted, which is necessary for rooting), and that's just a consequence of the unlocking process that HTC has implemented as a means of keeping user data secure should you be trying to do something stupid with your phone.
The reason that the Captivate was so easy to root was because it had an unlocked bootloader from the start.

They wipe the data because when the boot loader is unlocked any data that you have on there is no longer secure. Its a protective measure for your privacy.

You can always use easy app lock to backup, and batch install your apps. It would take...5 minutes to set up a Tablet/Phone like it was before a root.

So there is a way without using titanium backup?

Am I to assume that this is for S-OFF phones only and isn't the S-ON exploit?

ClockworkMod is a custom recovery that allows you to create android backups, flash update zip files and wipe system partitions. You need to be S-OFF to install a custom recovery because otherwise the partition you need to write to is locked.
If you have come from a different HTC Android phone, you may have used AmonRA recovery's, this is very similar except it comes with an app you can use whilst in Android to manage your recovery and backups much easier.
This is good news as we now have official support and all the features should be working, where as the two ports gloating about both had problems.
Hope that clears everything up

Does this mean we can now temp root and then install the recovery. Or is that the goal? Anyway, nice to see l0st.pr0phet from the hero scene. Just won this phone yesterday at an htc event so still orientating the possibilities
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA Premium App
Gotcha. I am familiar with recoveries having used both on my old Hero, I think I was just hoping against hope that this was an S-OFF exploit somehow. Also I am very hung over and not thinking clearly, which only made things worse.

people for all your questions. search on google what clockworkmod recovery is
all i did whas gather al the info that was needed to realise to get this up and running, koush builded it and its fully supported now in the rommanager...
yes you need root...
no this is not an exploit
Thank you, working here
Now we just need a working wwe flashable rom with 2.3
Edit: how do I select items? Can't do it with power, the volume keys move the selection and the not illuminated touch keys doesn't do the trick

You sure?
Works for me...
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA Premium App
If I press the power button I only get a clockwork logo, nothing else
Edit: I tried it a 3rd time and now it works don't know y didn't changed anything

I have the same problem with an S-OFF phone and temproot.
Can someone explain me what is wrong?
Try to go and clear data for the super-user application (Settings -> Apps -> Manage -> All apps -> Super-user -> Clear data)
Then reboot (just in case) and try to install Clockworkmod from Rom Manager again.
<warning, this is on your own risk>
anyone want to be so kind to test this on the INC2, it seems only the local partition wont be backed up, which shudnt be a problem tho
<warning, this is on your own risk>
p.s. yes offcourse u need s-off for this.......

Use SuperOneClick on your ROM:

That way you will permanently root, and you wont lose the settings after a reboot.

[Q] rooting help

I'm looking to root my HTC vivid, and with all the resources here I thought it would be easy. However, I'm on a mac, and can't find a way to make the drivers work on my computer, and I'm still lost as to what to do after that. Somebody please help? Thanks.
Look in the development section, there are some programs that will help you with that problem. Just look through the topics.

thanks. Is there a way to unlock a my bootloader without losing all my contacts and apps and such?
Save all contacts, etc. to your Google account, if you don't have one make it. Makes it much easier when replacing things. Otherwise you will lose data.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
google syncs backups of contacts....your apps if downloaded from market should reinstall automatically but yes you will loose all data when unlocking bootloader

rooting without a computer possible

i have heard people talking about it, how is it done?
There's apps like z4root that root your phone with No computer. Also something like universal root
Sent from my iPhone killer.
im not sure z4root will work on a vivid will it?
also how is universal androot one click, is it good?
any luck?
did you have any luck with those apps? I wouldnt think those apps would work without the computer because you need that token id from your phone by using the command prompt to unlock your bootloader.
You can only temp root with boot loader locked

There most likely won't be any. You can just download the toolkit and it will do it all for you.

Vivid bricked by rom toolbox :(

I've used rom toolbox forever now for changing system fonts. Well today I decide to change again. RT was recently updated, and after rebooting to apply the font, my vivid now gets stuck at the at&t animation. Won't go past. I've done several reboots and battery pulls to no avail. My phone is unlocked and rooted, but other than doing those two things I'm a complete noob. I have no idea how to fix this.

If you are rooted i take it you have cwm recovery or something similar. If so boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvic cache. May work may, not let me know

HTC I'm assuming
Are you Soff
If so boot into recovery and restore last backup

And that don't relock bootloder and run the stock ruu , it has yet to fail me with errors
I'm s-on. I wasn't comfortable trying to s-off. I emailed the rom toolbox Dev and the only suggestion he had that was feasible was to flash a new rom. I'm game to try it, I just have no idea how to pick one or install it. Senseless sounds good to me, and one with a better camera would be great. Lte isn't needed, it'll never be available here anyway.
Edit: wiping both cashe did nothing. Still sitting at "rethink possible."
Sent from my LG-P505 using xda app-developers app
Your just soft bricked. I've done it myself, go messing with something and bam the phone won't boot. It easily fixable by flashing a rom. Actually wiping data might be an even easier fix. I deleted some bloat and caused a boot loop, clearing the cache didn't work either but when I wiped again all is good.

How long is it sitting at that screen? You may want to do a factory data reset. You will lose any settings, app and messages you had but at least you may get booted
I managed to flash the virtuous Inquisition rom. But I have no signal and no data connection.
And yes I had my sim card in lol.

OK I had VI installed and running great last night. Got my signal fixed, spent around 5 hours getting my phone back to where it was. I wake up this morning, accidentally dropped my phone and now it doesn't have a signal again...
OK I can get a signal but it's VERY weak, not strong enough for anything really. But this area is notorious for having a crap signal.

Looking for root method that won't factory reset my phone. IE like Odin

Is there away I can root this phone without having to factory reset it? I was kinda spoiled by Odin when I was with the galaxy line. Just one click flash and done. I was hoping HTC had something similar but I haven't found it yet.

in order to root it, you have to start by unlocking your bootloader through htcdev. this wipes your phone, there's no way I know to get around it.
you could back up all your stuff first. Helium (carbon) is the only app I know of that can backup your app+data, sms, etc without root:

HTC Backup also does a surprisingly good job of backing everything up and restoring it after a reset.
I second the HTC Backup. Link it to Drive or Dropbox and let it do a full backup. When you are setting up the phone again, log back into HTC Backup and choose to restore a previous backup. It will re-install 98% of your apps and will restore lots of settings like wifi routers that you've saved and even restore your Sense homescreen, including widgets.
