I know Android is all great and stuff. But what about Boot to Gecko?
Seen it on the S2 few days ago and i somehow like it.
Does anyone know detailed information about its development state in general, meaning how useful it is right now?
Do you think its easy to be ported to our phone?
This isn't ment to be a "request" or anything. It's just pure curiosity from my side.
B2G just looks very interesting to me.

I'm not sure which devices can run B2G and i haven't done it myself yet but Androidcentral just did a nice little walk through on installing it on the Samsung Nexus S. The B2G project have instructions for some other devices as well i'm told.
Anyways i hope this helps you. It does look like an interesting project and i wouldn't mind running it myself but I'm a little worried to do it on my main phone (Galaxy Nexus). Wish i had a spare.
Right, because i don't use these forums much i haven't had ten posts and i can't post outside links, so if you head over to the androidcentral forum you'll be able to find the post, its right at the top as a featured article at the moment.

Sorry for posting this here, but I couldn't really find a suitable place since most of the Android action is right here.
These past weeks I've noticed an increase of irrelevant threads and clutter being made in regards to Android development in the HTC Dream forum and every other Android development forum on xda. A lot of Android devices out on the market now are not made by HTC. This of course is causing a problem since this forum is for HTC devices only.
Maybe it would be a good idea if a new forum was created that accounts for all native Android devices (Motorola Droid/Milestone, Motorola Cliq/Dext, Samsung Galaxy, etc...). That way, a lot of the clutter would surely be resolved and a considerate load would be taken off of this server (Gotta hate the horrible load on xda these days...).
I'm sure there are quiet a few people on here that have an HTC device and are fully satisfied with it (Me included!). That doesn't mean that everyone else has to feel the same way. People that choose to go with Samsung, Motorola, etc. for their next Android device should not be left out. That's why I believe there should definitely be a forum that serves everyone.
To put up a new forum specifically for this matter takes no time at all, but it does take participation. So if you feel like this is something you would like to see, please feel free to leave a comment.
What are you're opinions on this matter? Agree? Disagree?
Discuss.
EDIT: If there's enough people interested in this project, would there be anyone willing to help getting things started in terms of hosting space or something similar?
my thoughts are that the few changes that have been recently made should help if they are utilized. now we have a forum for general android development for devs, and the rom releases are in the device specific forums. Here was my idea, but i think they made the right choice. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4795376&postcount=1

It's a start. But I don't think xda is going to put up more sub forums for each new device out there. Thus, development and ROM threads for Motorola and other devices will be left out. Unless I understood your post incorrectly
no, you're right, i just dont think xda WANTS to keep up with every brand that uses android. they apparently keep their focus on HTC devices. there are gonna be a FLOOD of manufacturers utilizing droid in the future, and unless xda wants to change their focus, they will stick with one brand

Yea that's exactly my point.
There WILL be a flood of Android devices from all kinds of manufacturers and it would be nice if there was a place for all of them come together. That way, everyone can keep track of specific development without having to switch between dozens of forums.

good luck, my friend. Most likely it will take someone to else to start a new site to accomplish. funny, i was fooling around a couple days ago and did this. http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=176593179336&v=wall
not saying this is the solution, but you are not alone in your concerns.
I see that a few agree with me, care to share your point of view? Maybe it will spark this thing.
and i am a complete android noob. i have never had any android based devices. i am an iphone owner. any tips/hints on where to start? ive looked through the forums but im nothing but confused at the terms and stuff.
i would like to root the device, where do i start? i dont know what all this rom stuff is and all the talk. can anyone help me out?
also, i tried connecting to wifi through my iphone (jailbroken running MyWi), but the Nook wouldnt recognize it. is it because it is considered an Ad-Hoc network?
any helps/pointers/links for a noob would be great. thanks.
To keep it simple, you will probably just want to root it through autonooter:

Welcome to the community!
First off, i would say to take a read through the main Nook color information hub, found here: http://nookdevs.com/Portal:NookColor
There is lots of info about the device, and things that can be done with it. Terminology is all over the place, so if you have something in ind, i would suggest asking a specific question.
In general, the Android system is a highly customized Linux system, built on a linux kernel. Android itself is the rom, and is the OS that you are actually booting too. The kernel is the supporting software for the OS, and contains the system drivers (among other things). Commonly, when a custom rom is developed, an associated kernel is released with it, but they can be changed, if they are made interchangeable. If you do to the dev forum, you will see people working on both pieces.
The rooting information for the NC is in the portal page, and should get you fully started. As for the ad-hoc issue, yes, you will need to do some work to get that working, also found in this and the development forums.
Yes, welcome! I, too, am from iPhone jaikbreak land with this as my first android device. You'll love it! it's flexible and slick. Everyone here is so helpful, so just jump in!

Just landed on the NOOKcolor planet as well
I love my Droid 1 and thought the Ipad worked pretty cool. It's pretty heavy though and $500? No thanks.
If only there was a smaller, cheaper, user customizable option.... the NOOKcolor!
Found info on XDA about it. Did some research. Played with it a few times. SOLD!
This thread links to everything I need to know about rooting it like my Droid so off I go.
Thanks for all the hard work everyone.

Hey guys, looks like some nice work here. I own a Kyocera Zio and we recently had kernel source released. I am looking to Legend Devs because apparently our source code was taken mainly from the Legend. We are looking for someone to overclock out phone and I was hoping one of the Devs here would be willing to take a swing at our device?? We have a deidcated section here on XDA and our irc channel is #openzio. We would all apprechiate any help you guys could send our way. Our chipset is MSM7227 and we are FRG83 devices. So the Legend has a better chip set, but like I said our source code was taken mostly from the Legend. Hope we can all work together to own our device!! Thanks for your time!
I've included a link to our source code for anyone that wants to take a look .
http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/support/developers.htm
We are running 2.2.1.
Take a look at the htc-kernel-msm7227 repository (you could have easily found that one by using a search engine), specifically at commit c291a2.
We could also arrange you being fed everything else, just tell us whether you'd like a golden or a silver spoon.
(Note: This is a joke. I'm not actually going to feed you.)
He is so funny, our developer.....
If I had any idea how to overclock I wouldn't be here asking. Thought it would be a nice opportunity for someone here to help out. Thanks for being an ass tho, much apprechiated. That isn't a joke. Btw.

Learn. I gave you all you need to know. The rest is a matter of reading wikis and blog posts.
This is the development board, by the way.
I know it has been announced only a few hours ago and the source is not available yet. But, when Google finally releases the source code, will there ever be a ROM for the original Galaxy Tab?
I am curious because the answer to this question will help me resist the new tablet temptation
Having a hard time with HC, I doubt it with ICS....even the GB ROMs are not very polished, like Overcome causes warming up problem....
It can be short...
Maybe it will arrive sooner as we think, not with cyanogenmod, even if i want it on my tab, but with MIUI, I just read on the MIUIteam fr that MIUI have the source since they have the status of developpers with the XIAOMI, and they are already work on the Mi-one and the two nexus, so maybe the us team who develop the MIUI Rom for our tab will be able to port ISC on the galaxy tab?
I just hope that we can have ISC on our tab before Christmans it will be great!
ICS
From the news:
"Gabe Cohen from Google claims that most Gingerbread devices may have an upgrade to Android 4.0, claiming that it is theoretically compatible with any Android 2.3.x device"
I would presume (going off the little snippits of info I've gleaned) that almost ANY device will be able to run ICS in some capacity or another since it is designed to be all encompassing. (Think Ubuntu for comparison) Admittedly some older devices will struggle due to the specs but this is the same for every old device.
I could be completely WAY-OFF the mark but I believe el-goog is heading down the Canonical Road and pretty soon we will have OS's that just play well together, be it on mobile, laptop, PC, TV yadda yadda yadda......and then we'll see a small moon appear on the horizon
No wait, "That's not a moon.....It's a SPACE STATION!" cue dramatic music and suddenly everyone and their dog will be screaming "IT'S A TRAAAAAP!" "TURN THIS SHIP AROUND!" but by then we'll all be caught in the tractor beam and headed for a Schwartz-off with Dark Helmet......
Jus sayin
Developers get new devices and forget about old ones. Time's working against us...
In future, post [QUESTIONS] in your separate Q&A section.
The next thread I see in the General section, that asks a [QUESTION] will be deleted, the user will receive a Warning.
I believe there will be a rom, not before Christmas tho
At least not a stable one.
Will Samsung release ICS for Galaxy Tab ??
Do you think people will port it or wait for source code.

How does a question not belong in general? Is the general sub forum not for General discussion. Don't mean to be rude just wondering how that does not encompass a question (heck a development thread could in theory fall under the general category), i understand that there is a specific category for q&a and trying to order the chaos; it just seems to me you can't really claim anything doesn't belong in general in order to delete and or warn a user.

Don't worry, I understand you intent, no rudeness is taken.
The development sections are for posting active development projects. I.e ROMs, APPs & MODs & to receive feedback, help, advice & even thanks.

This, to me is open for discussion, and not a clear cut yes or no. There is a gray (British spelling ) area as you could say the General section is full of questions.
But to clarify, If I see any threads with [Q] or [Question] in the thread title or post, in the General section, it will be deleted & the user Warned, not Infracted, just warned.
If they haven't bothered checking what section they are posting in, its highly likely they haven't bothered searching for the answer either, but that is another kettle of fish
This is all so incredibly exciting... looks like an amazing release and I really hope that I can put it on my SGT very soon!

Andy: Thank you for being awesome - lots of admins I've worked with throughout the years would probably throw a hissy over perceived insurrection when questions of protocol are asked. Your professionalism is greatly appreciated.
I am so glad that google appears to have gone with an open model this time around - it looks like they actually worked to maximize compatibility with the wide range of GB running devices and made everything pretty portable. of course we'll know more about that in a week or so when google drops the sources on us.
from what i understand, this will be the first time we've had proper public sources since the GB release.
the new feature set looks like it'll be pretty amazing so long as they optimized it well... I don't really care if newer fancier phones and tabs have more resources... more resources should allow you to do more things better, NOT an excuse to settle for sub-par optimization of code because "oh, it doesn't matter anymore, all new devices have enough ram and cpu speed to handle it!"... </rant>

I agree!!! More so if ICS is the hybrid between honeycomb (tabs only) and gingerbread (smartphones only), it should work on Original Galaxy(OG) tab, at least for those upgraded to gingerbread. Now we have OG 7" on 2.3, sg-tab 7 plus on 3.2 and possibly sg-tab 7.7 on ??4.0(I guess), sammy better get ICS on all otherwise it'll be hard selling all three.

I thing the original sgt7 is no longer part of the lineup i belive it has been discontinued. So the 7 plus is 3.2, as is the 10.1, and the 7.7. Samsung has settled on honeycomb for the lot but have already stated that each of these tablets will get upgraded to ics "real soon". On the flipside they all but confirmed that ics wont be coming to the original sgt7 making me very sad.
Samsung imho has really bad support for os updates in that they taje forever to release them and they are notorious for droping hardware / os support way too fast. My original sgt7 came out only about a year ago (last nov iirc).

yes, that's true, there is lots of private third-party ICS development going on to get a good AOSP rom up and functional. I think that's going to be most dependent on the galaxy tab ics dev thread here and then the cyanogen guys will go ahead and hack it smooth with extra features and the like as they generally do. I was specifically tallking about samsung OEM rom support.
and FIY, there is already a worked over SDK port of honeycomb for the galaxy tab 7 that seems to run pretty smooth that you might want to check out here if you're interested. the ICS stuff looks like it's shaping up, but I expect it to be at least a few months before everything becomes smooth enough for use as a daily rom.
So I've had the Edge for a while now and just got the lollipop update. Don't get me wrong I LOVE my device, but I am a root/flash freak and I really enjoy all the hard work that is given by the developers to help our devices be that much more cutting edge. I told myself I wouldn't root my device at least until after the lollipop update, then I would look into customizing my device. However the issue is there is LITTLE TO NO development for the edge.. Coming from a long history of galaxy devices this is something I'm not used to experiencing.. I have been waiting patiently for it to pick up but nothing seems to be moving..
I've said all that to say/ask this.. Is there much difference in the development for the note 4 vs the note edge, are there any custom ROMs that are compatible with both devices? If so what are they? Any themes that are compatible with both devices? Any developers willing to offer a little development here and there? Any way I can help with that? I mean I know this is asking alot. And I'm not trying to come off as a douche, don't need the "smart alek" responses as I am being sincere here.... Sorry I hope I'm not breaking any OP rules either.. HEELLLPPPP... Lol, naw but frfr..?????

There is a difference in the sense that you will always have SOMETHING to flash. We have AOSP builds where developers are updating every other day. We have a stock base rom by Tekk and he literally update about twice a week. Now that lollipop is here, we are waiting on developers to update or they are in the process of perfecting their roms to where Kitkat was. Development is up and running...as far as coming out with new features and what not, not so much. I will suggest you look around...be our guest, a sip here and a spoon full there while examining the change-logs and comments
