I'm on the original 2.3.6 rooted ROM from way back when it came out.
I want to upgrade to CM9 nightly, but with more than 300 pages in that thread, I'm having trouble finding My upgrade path.
I'm not too sure about this MTD/non MTD thing either.
Anyone willing to help a disabled vet out? I've given myself a midrange trying to figure it all out.
I'll give you all the thanks I've got.

Hi,
I have the same question but I am on a Euro GTAB Model (P1000), running a rootet Gingerbread 2.3.3 XXJQ1. What would be the right upgrade path/procedures to CM9 nightly?
Same as my tab.

Basically.
Download GB-stock-safe-v5 and overcome kernel tar format. It will convert your filesystem to ext4 and provides CWM recovery.
flash both and your tab will be ready to flash ics from sdcard using cwm.
You can stop there with the guide, no need to flash overcome from.

Awesome, then download the latest nightly and flash in ROM manager?
are the nightlies in ROM manager?

Okay, I followed the instructions completely, everything was fine.
I downloaded the April 21 CM9 Nightly, and booted into recovery.
I selected it, it installed decently quickly, and now it is boot looping, showing some install screen that I can't read because it is so quick, but it shows an android laying on its back with a red exclamation mark...
Help?
Managed to get back into recovery.
I'm going to try rewiping it all and reflashing.
That seems to have done it, It is booting now, got the CM9 boot animation.
Now I need a landscape animation...
Don't forget to flash the gapps-ics-20120317-signed.zip .

Hi all. I was trying to find a guide to return my AT&T Nexus One to fully stock. Right now I have Clockwork Mod Recovery and CM7 installed. I would like to return it back to stock recovery and stock froyo then update to gingerbread. Can someone help me or is there a guide posted somewhere to do this. I am still a newb at this so I would appreciate some clear instruction if possible. Thanks!

Everything.
I am planning to do the same as the OP but what I would like to know is it possible to keep Clockwork Recovery while running stock Gingerbread and if so is there any advantage to this?

You would have to at least
Root the stock gingerbread for it to be any use at all.

Alright I am really lost.
It seems there are several paths to restoring my N1 from CM7 RC1 to hopefully stock Gingerbread
Fastboot Method
PASSIMG Method
And because I have ClockworkMod Recovery using the backup and restore feature?
I wouldn't mind the last one as it seems fairly simple (I have a copy of the backup on my desktop, just need to figure out where it goes, path etc...) and should restore everything to how it was pre CM7 RC1.
I am worried that because apparently the newer version of CWM Recovery doesn't work with Froyo (2.2.2 which is was I would be restoring to, then factory reset, upgrade to Gingerbread). Also the HBOOTs are different between Froyo and Gingerbread correct? Would CWM Recovery restore the older HBOOT?
Or can I simply use the PASSIMG method with a Gingerbread Stock ROM?
Thanks in advance for putting up with my n00b questions

I can't say you need to be rooted, but it is needed for certain backup utilities like Titanium Backup. Otherwise, all you need is CWM

I suppose I misspoke. Root is not required, but is greatly helpful, and I'd suggest obtaining it first.

I would say , root is highly recommended. But I think I seen a tutorial somewhere about flashing clockworkmod recovery on a stock unrooted captivate, or flashing a modded 3e Recovery to flash unsigned zip packages. I will try to find the link for you. But to backup all your apps and data, you will need root.

There are methods to root gingerbread, but they tend to be more involved then earlier versions of android. I correct my earlier statement that root is necessary. I'd highly suggest it if you want to back up apps etc, but it isn't required. I'd suggest downgrading to 2.1 or 2.2 and use the superoneclick utility. Supposedly this tool works on gingerbread but I haven't had any luck with it.

The easiest way is probably to flash Corn kernel, because you get the option to root in CWM. And you will have corn kernel, so it will also be easy to flash from there
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
If you want to flash a custom roms, flash back to stock, then flash a custom kernel via Odin, reboot to system, put the rom on root of sd card, reboot to cwm, do a nandroid backup, wipe data/factory reset, then flash zip from sd card. That's the basic of flashing. Search around in the captivate section and you will find your answers. There are so many topics about flashing roms. Most of the time the rom dev, posts detailed instructions on flashing his/hers rom from start to finish.
Almost every custom rom comes pre-rooted. No need to root once you flash the custom rom.
Also, if you want to save your contacts, you should do so before you flash back to stock, or before you flash the custom rom. If you want to backup all of your apps, then you will need to be rooted, and have titanium backup installed from the market.

can you boot to download mode (vol down and power button)
I recommend just "restock" using Overcome method
Go to overcome site
Http://www.teamovercome.net
Read the guide,
Missing pictures can be seen here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20974872
Follow the picture step by step.
Basically to restock:
Download GB-stock-safe-v5.zip, unzip it and and flash with ODIN according to the guide.
Stop there and you will have Gingerbread JQ1
You can continue with the rest, and you will get Overcome 4.1 and you won't regret.
From there you can then try AOKP or CM9, all requires you to have Overcome Kernel with its CWM recovery to flash.

Not sure what state is this
hi, i dont know what to call this. i am totally new to all this...
the goal was to install ICS on the GT-P1000. so i googled and was following instructions...
- did root using doomlord v4
- next was to run 'overocom_7_series_v4.1.-_no wipe' from Recovery mode
- recovery was android e3 so one website recommended to change to CWM.
- using Odin3-v1.85 tried to run skin1980-P101-NEW-CF_root-GB
- it didnt work so just checked -re-partion option
- learned my lesson that i shouldnt do that...and the tab is gone in a comma
so now i am not sure where i am....just tried something called soft oneclick unbrick...it didnt work...
please help....
well, did you read the whole thread on how the OP saved the P1000 ?

Installed Overcome using Odin and nows it back to new! Thanks!
I've been running CM 10.1 on my 7310 for a couple of months - it's slow, but it does the job.
Today it started misbehaving more than usual, so I rebooted. It's spent the afternoon rebooting itself about once every five minutes - freeze and hard reboot (Samsung splash screen). I tried different versions of CM and AOKP to figure out if it was hardware or software, no change.
I wiped it and flashed CM 9 nightlies a couple of hours ago, and got the same behaviour. After some googling I found aLogrec and turned it on. As soon as it boots and tries to start recording the logcat, it hard reboots. I figure the onboard flash storage is borked - is there anything I can do? I can't even get it to boot into Recovery, it just loops forever.
I'm hoping someone out there can give me some ideas before I go out and spend on a Nexus 7..
Have you tried to see what happens if you install official ICS with Odin?

I was given a Samsung Galaxy tab 8.9 LTE/sgh-i957 about a year ago for free and it has been pretty good. It is pretty slow compared to new tabs and I don't really need the LTE. My question is should I root it and run a custom ROM or just buy a Nook HD+ for $149.99? I can use hotspots on my phone from anywhere so the internet connection isn't an issue. I am just curious if I will even notice a speed increase on the sgh-i957 with a cleaner non-bloated ROM at it's age.
What version of android are you running now? If it's gingerbread you'll see a large change in performance if you go to ics. Cm10 and ics run about the same on my i957. I'm rooted.
