[Q] Open VPN on ATT Thrill running v20c or v20p - LG Thrill 4G

I recently obtained a subscription to a VPN service provider for my home network. I'm allowed to have two simultaneous connections and would like to use the second connection on my ATT Thrill.
My phone has been updated to the Rogers v20c firmware and I have been very pleased with it.
Attempts to connect to my VPN service provider via PPTP have been successful. However, I am unable to do anything on the Internet while connected.
Attempts to connect via Open VPN result in the phone rebooting itself.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I'm considering "upgrading" to ATT's v20p firmware to resolve this but I'd rather avoid it if possible. Their use of Carrier IQ to record my phone activity has left a very bad taste.

Guess I'll answer my own question for anyone who runs into the same problem. I bit the bullet and "upgraded" from the Rogers v20c ROM to AT&Ts v20p ROM. Open VPN is now working like a charm. I'm not sure if this is because I screwed up the initial install/config or not. I can't find any evidence of Carrier IQ on v20p either. Suddenly my tinfoil hat doesn't feel quite so fashionable.

Kaiser on Fido (Canada) & roaming

Hello all,
I have searched these forums high and low, but could not find a solution to my problem. I have a Kaiser which I use on the Canadian provider Fido. Since late 2004, Fido is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rogers, another Canadian wireless provider. Fido and Rogers now share one same network: Rogers'. My problem is that my Kaiser, having a Fido SIM in it, seems to always think it is roaming because it is connecting to the Rogers network. This causes me a problem since I cannot tell my phone to only download when on my home network, otherwise I would never be able to download anything (since I am always roaming). If I tell my phone to download even when roaming, I cannot control my usage when I actually am roaming in another country. I know there must be some kind of setting somewhere that I can adjust to make my phone think it is not roaming while connected to Rogers' network, I just don't know what it is. No matter what ROM I try, I can't get rid of that pesky "roaming triangle"! My gf's phone, a Samsung Jack, does not think it is forever roaming, so I know it is possible.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
Thanks in advance!
Dom
Hello there.
I have used my kaiser with Saudi Sim card, Lebanese Sim card, Jordanian Sim card and now FIDO sim card. Ive always had this triangle and has never affected my data plan.

Me too, I even had my roaming turned off by Fido for some time and the triangle was still there.
Thanks for the input, guys. I know that the roaming icon will not prevent me from accessing 3G data. What it does prevent me from doing, though, is differentiating between "real" roaming (i.e. in another country) and "fake" roaming (i.e. on the Rogers network). As it stands, all settings which can be set to "use 3G data only when not roaming" are ineffective as I would never be able to download anything if they were enabled.
I hope that clears things up. And I hope that someone smarter than I am has a solution for this problem.
Thanks again!
Hello, I have the exact same phone on the exact same fido network and have the roaming triangle as well. It does not affect your data/voice plan at all. (ie. if you are in the Canada, you will not be charged for roaming). This is all explained in the following link:
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=837503
Essentially the gist of it is that you are "roaming" on the rogers network, but since they are the same company, it doesn't matter or affect any of your plans. I have used my 6GB data plan from Fido with no extra charges.
It does effect some programs that do provide options for disabling web traffic when roaming (ie. hotmail push e-mail from windows live) as these programs will always think you are on another network.
What I have done is, predominantly, I use my wifi connection where available and have turned off all the "disabling traffic when roaming" options in various apps. Then in the fido internet (3G;GPRS) settings, I did not include the password. What this does is that when I connect to the internet without wifi it asks me for my password which I then enter to connect. Definitely mildly inconvenient, but prevents me from 'accidentally' connecting to the internet when in the US.
Thanks ibhimani.
I have taken similar measures to prevent roaming fees, but I use MoDaCo's NODATA app, instead. Basically, it allows me to completely turn off all cellular data connections (WiFi remains intact) while I am away.
Still, I don't think this is a real solution; it is a workaround at best. I know there is a way to force the phone to recognize the Rogers network as a "Home" network since my gf's Samsung Jack does not claim to be roaming at all times. I will try to look through the registry on the Jack to see if there is some setting I can tweak to achieve the desired effect. I'll let you all know if I find something.
That would be great. Thanks in advance.
No luck!
Hi all,
After a little research in the registry of my gf's Samsung Jack, I've found that the way the network is handled on it is different than on our HTC. The Samsung uses something called MITSMan.exe (Mobile Intelligent Terminal by Samsung Manager) which can identify the network correctly on her phone, but not on ours. Unfortunately, this is not reusable for us. The search continues. Hopefully, a WinMo HTC device will launch on Fido sometime soon so I can reuse something from it.
If I find anything else, I'll post it here.
I have a Nokia e62 and the Samsung Jack from Fido. Both these phones do not show the roaming icon. Must be some sort of custom firmware brewed for Fido by the manufacturers.
BTW - I am now using a Samsung Omnia II. This shows roaming too.

Hi hameedx,
With a Samsung Omnia II, you may be able to make a change to the registry to make it think you're on the home network, if it works like the Samsung Jack. On your Jack, search through the registry for something called MITSman. There should be a value corresponding to Fido's carrier code (MNC-MCC), which is 302-370 (or 302-720, which is Rogers'). It may actually be easier to search for these values. If the Omnia also uses MITSman, then you might be able to make the registry entries on it look like the ones on the Jack. If you need more detail about the registry entries, I could get them when I have access to a Jack again.
I searched the Jack's registry for anything with 302 720 370 72 37. Couldn't find any meaningful entry. Perhaps it is a DLL that we need to replace?
I believe that the Fido Samsung Jack has roaming indicator disabled completely. I used a Telus SIM in the Jack and does not show roaming. The Telus SIM shows roaming when I put it in other unlocked phones.

Unable to connect to 3G with Froyo on N1

I live in Japan, and use a Softbank SIM card from an iPhone 3G. For the past few months I have been running Cyanogenmod 5.06 with no issue, Yesterday I installed Froyo with this ROM.
bit.ly/9l3sBM
Everything works great minus connecting to 3G. In japan 2G is no longer used therefore I cannot even make a phone call.
I have checked and rechecked to make sure I am using the correct APN settings.
Any ideas? Could my carrier be blocking it. May it be a problem with the ROM? I did a sum check before installing.
I really would like to use 2.2 as its much faster and the battery life is at least 2X longer.
Thanks,
Brandon
So apparently there was an issue with my automatic cell phone payment, and once my phone disconnected from the network it was not allowed back on. I payed it, and it now works.

Signal Constantly go out

I recently got a Milestone and so far by far the best at&t phone I've had. Don't have to change any plans. It's a Telus version, and rooted. I have the latest CM7, I flashed canada rogers band files. and the connection works. But for some reason signal keeps going out. I go from Service to No Service to Emergency Calls Only to Service. Happens in all different area's. If I use an actually AT&T phone don't have this problem.
Is thre's some setting that I'm forgetting to set?
Please help.
Much needed bump

Issue with At&t unlocked Moto X 2014. on t-mobile

So i am having issue. I bought a Moto X 2014 and it is clean in terms of imei. Both t-mobile says its clean and at&t says its clean. It is a AT&T variant XT1097 and like i said it is clean in terms of imei. weirdly enough T-mobile wont be picked up on the service, but AT&T will? it basically says
No Service
selected network (T-mobile) unavailable
and when i do try to select a network it says
"cant connect to network right try again later"
has anyone else have this issue with the AT&T moto trying to use it on at&t? and found a solution? if there is any solution ill take it i need all the help i can get lol
i tried reseting it, factory reseting, airplane mode, etc literally almost everything else.
Sorry.....I have similar issue..Did you find the solution? If yes could you share the info for it.

Add the T-Mobile APN.
it's discussed on the ATT thread, basically it's an issue with the lollipop radio used on our update, "fix" is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/att-xt1097-lollipop-discussion-t2951294/page36
Add the APN (as mentioned above)
Download the 4G/LTE switcher app
select WCDMA preferred as network, only HSDPA speeds but it's better than no service ^_^
I had this similar issue and it was driving me absolutely insane, the connection would be weak then it would just disconnect me altogether and then zero service. Most of the time if I were to get a call the radio would switch to HSPAP like normal then after the call it would fail to switch back to LTE then it would just completely drop connection. This is on an unlocked AT&T XT1097 running on the unlimited MetroPCS (T-Mobile) mind you.
Since February 2015 I've been dealing with this bug by using LTE switch to get by, but this got so tedious and it just irked me that I had to go thru all this crap because of poor development. This is a pretty huge bug that should've never been there to begin with. Seriously, how dare you mess with my service Google?
Anyways what I did to fix this completely was just purchase MoFoRoot for $20 (fully worth BTW) and flash the 4.4.4 AT&T modem and now I have zero issues. I used to not connect to the network on a reboot but since flashing the modem I am now able to connect and stay connected without any hassle. The connection is now solid and I can't be happier with this phone. Currently on stock 5.0.2 non-rooted with 4.4.4 modem and zero problems, now I don't need to get another phone.
Using the fast.metropcs.com APN as the T-Mobile APN doesn't allow me to connect. I have solid LTE and HSPA/HSPAP service with it and can't be happier... I take that back, I'd be happier with better indoor coverage.
Thank you makers of MoFoRoot for your lifesaver app, I am happy to have supported your fine work.

Sprint wifi calling issue on LG G4 - spoofing your GPS location no longer working

Hello,
I travel a lot for work from the US to China. In the past, I've utilized wi-fi calling on my LG G4 on Sprint for texts / voice capabilities. Sprint doesn't allow wifi calling in China, but there was an easy work around: I would VPN to a US based location (needed to access anything google), connect to wifi, turn on global roaming and then use a fake GPS locator app set to somewhere in the US. When used in tandem, I was able to to connect to wifi calling just as if I was in the states. I've done this successfully for the past six trips to china over the past year, end of April being the latest.
On my current trip to China, I've been unable to connect using this method. The Wifi calling times out and gives an notification error in the status bar "wifi calling is not allowed in this country". Does anyone know what may have changed in the past two months? I believe Sprint does its locating via Google (one of the main reasons wifi calling doesn't work here) but that shouldn't be an issue if I have VPN access and can utilize the suite of my other Gapps.
Does anyone have any other ideas or settings I can tinker with to try to get this to work? One time I was able to pull up a screen that I've never seen before titled "self service" and it mentioned something about setting 911 location, but I've never had to mess with that in the past. Was there a recent ROM update that I may have downloaded over the past couple of months that would have prevented me from doing what I used to do (I don't remember, but maybe)?
Any help would be much appreciated. I even called Sprint to try to get my texts turned on and they just turn on global roaming and I'll be all set...I did this and that hasn't worked either. When I go to HK, I receive texts and can use data without issue, and can connect to wifi calling (confirmed last weekend).
Thanks!
-Rob
Try also calling sprint they can do a uicc unlock which would allow u to use it in china gsm if im not mistaken
I cant give no help on the wifi calling as im a gsm unlock user my wifi calling has never worked. Always get a invalid sim
