apart from the obvious fact, that the restricted access to dev section is to prevent exactly what you are proposing (and for a reason it seems)
so apart from what I just mentioned, something is missing here: if everything runs normal, why would you want to start new thread to pest the developer?

Root with Z4root but don't attempt to get CM7. Its a beta and you need to know how to use Heimdall to flash it.

Yes there is plenty of guides.
All roms come with introductions on how to install aswell as guides in teh sticky topics of teh forums.
Before you attempt to do anything to your device sit down and do some research otherwise you will be back here creating a "help I bricked my device urgent help" topic clone of the million others here.

You could read the OP in the CM7 development thread. Especially the part about how incomplete & unstable it is.
Either leave it alone, or flash Overcome instead for now, CM7 is several weeks away from being any use as a daily system.
I have been following the CM7 threads, seems like there is still some work to do to get it working on the tab.
I flashed overcome 1.4.4 and its very very nice. fast and smooth.
Hello Everyone
I have read quite a bit about flashing but have not tried it yet. I know that the phone can be soft bricked if there is some problem and can be subsequently recovered as well. I also read about something known as nand corruption and I guess that too is recoverable as well.
What I wanted to know was can this phone be permanently bricked and if yes in what cases can it be possible?
I searched google with the same question and found that there can be emmc chip failure but that affects the S2 and Galaxy Note and that too particularly the ICS roms only.
So I wanted to know what is the status of this phone as far as bricking permanently is concerned.
Regards
till what i have experienced so far that it can only be permanently bricked by throwing it on wall
P.s. till now i have flashed thousands of times...
Thanks! These kind of replies are motivating to start experimenting and trying some roms!

i would advice you to read the developer instruction carefully and in any doubt check with experience users/read comment in thread and then only flash anything...
I have expierence with sgs+, sgsII, sg5 (gt-i5500), htc one s & lg optimus x2.. the sgsII didnt worked anymore cuz a friend try'd to flash it but had no knowledge about what he is doing but then i ressurected it and now it works.. i think it is not possible to brick a phone (but i am only sure at samsung smartphones) if you do a mistake there are still ways to ressurect it if you did something wrong.

I was planning to use instructions from the website androidadvices for flashing. It has indepth tutorials. For ex-
http://androidadvices.com/update-galaxy-gt-i9000-stable-jellybean-411-firmware/#.UEe0FSK6Dsk
The tutorial for almost all roms seems to be same!
1.) Update your phone to xxjw4 through odin.
2.) Root your phone.
3.) Apply update via recovery mode.
And if you have to update another rom repeat the procedure above!
But reading few threads on XDA the information here seem very complicated for some roms! :-?

yes... few users are complaining about loosing imei and not able to connect to network... so best practice says always flash JB over ICS and ICS over GB... always flash JB over ICS....
If you need more info or links head to remics-jb thread in development section.
Its a nice rom and i am using since a long time..and you will see again me over there also.
Some Samsung phones can be bricked by flashing. The SGS is not one of them though - it's safe.
Search 'brick bug' or check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1693704 for more info on which models can be bricked and how.

You meant always flash JB over gingerbread?
So that basic tutorial would suffice to flash roms?
Sure I would have a look at the remics-jb thread. Its time to do some more research now!

if you flash another phone's rom like i9100 s2 it will be bricked..Hard brick
But this is only happening if i9100 rom file has a pit file
Long story short flash an i9100 rom that has ext4.pit file, phone won't be alive... No download mode no recovery no charging animation...JTAG will be required.

Hi all, I wonder if you can help me at all. I have just been given a GT-I9000 which is locked with t-mobile and I would like to unlock it and then flash the ROM (but I will open another thread later for that). I have unlocked only one phone so far, my old gt-I5700 and I was wondering if anybody can let me know how to unlock this one. I had a look at the sticky threads but couldn't find anything about it. Ah this phone has android 2.1
thanks a lot
Ah sorry, I need to root into my phone first...sorry! Can anybody kindly point me to the location where I can get the file to root my phone? thanks

Root is easy to obtain on this device.
You could flash a pre- rooted stock rom with Odin or depending on your rom you could flash a kernel that gives you the ability to use cwm and then flash supersu.zip.
Take a look at the development forum or search for rooting in it. YouTube offers video guides to root your device.

Thanks. Sorry I am not an expert on this so I might need a bit more help. To root in the phone as you say I need Odin. WOuld any version of Odin be ok or should I get one that supports my phone?
About tutorial on youtube, fine I will have a look. For the zip file to become root, are you saying I can get it straight from odin?
Finally, the development forum: I can't find the one for my phone on xda, could you possibly point me there please?
thanks

This is the general section for the i9000, the international version of the galaxy s1. On the left upper side, about the thread name, are links, click on the i9000. It should direct you to the overview of all i9000& 9001 relevant sub forums.
There are two Odin version that work with this phone, they are mostly included in the Odin packages or kernels.
Zip files can be flashed in the cwm/ twrp recovery, Odin can't flash zip files.
Here are some sample guides: http://m.youtube.com/user/totallydubbedHD. There are a lot of more tutorials out there, but that's a user I would recommend you. Written tutorials are in the q&a are and the development forum.

Thanks I had a look at the videos you sent me. I have managed to root and unlock my sim card, so now I have to flash the rom. I had a look around in the gt-i9000 forum, found interesting posts, but I don't understand what ROM version I should get. Ideally I would like to have the latest bug free one. I seem to understand that there are stock roms and custom roms: not entirely sure what the difference is, but as long as I can get a stable (ideally the newest) version I am happy. I had a look around but couldn't find what I need...perhaps because I am not entirely sure myself what I need. Could I ask for some more help please?
thanks

There are modified stock roms, based on the official Samsung releases but with a moded theme and some tweaks, they are also called custom roms. The development section contains also pure AOSP roms, based on the android open source project with the AOSP look and speed without OEM content.
It's up to you what you choose, both versions can be stable. The AOSP is based on the latest google release, named jellybean 4.2.1. Samsung stopped the development at 2.3.6, named gingerbread.
Take a closer look at the rom threads and try to build your own opinion with the users feedback.

well actually to flash the rom you need to root your phone first...
Ok.. So I just picked up this Galaxy Tab 8.9 i957 for AT&T and am really disappointed in the lack of Development for it or at least the help from the other versions in getting something working for it. With that said, I need someone, i957 version Developer or not to take the 4.0.4 tar found in the i957 Development section and convert this into a zip flashable version and of course DeOdex it.
I will be using this stock ROM to theme as well as do some other modifications to it. I just want to provide something to this device, seeing as it looks to have been abandoned but I know there are plenty of users out there with the device.
Once the ROM conversion is complete just send it my way or post up in the Dev section. I don't mind making a small donation for your time.
*If this is too time consuming for someone just send instructions my way and I'll attempt to take care of it myself*
Thanks,
Mike
Hope someone can get you the zip. I'd like to see a little variety for the i957. I got one too.

Hmm what is the error you are getting? I was thinking of using the script from the only custom ROM found in the i957 Dev section for 4.0.4 (DannoRom), assuming this would work.
nrvate and dan_htc have done the most dev work for the device....best bet would to ask one of them. havent heard from dan in a while but i know nrvate is around. just depends on if he has the time
Hi all
Hopefully I am posting this in the right place.
I am in the process of learning how to flash custom ROMs etc. My phone is currently rooted and I am thinking of installing CWM from ROM manager so that I can update to a newer Android version.
My understanding is that if I backup my stock ROM with CWM before I flash a custom ROM I can go back to my original ROM but the kernal / CWM recovery will remain
My main question is how do I "uninstall" CWM later if I wanted to return my phone to a stock warranty state. I believe that flashing a stock kernel will achieve this, however, I haven't been able to locate a procedure and the files specific to my phone's model (GT-N7000B, on 4.1.2).
Thanks in advance

Thanks for link. There seems to be a wealth of info there. Apologies for a silly question but may I ask what is the best way to navigate this thread since there are 280 odd pages. There is a guide at the beginning, but it appears to be the oldest post. Would it be better to work from the newer pages and work backwards (from page 280). I did a quick search in the thread but did not see much reference to the N7000B. Hopefully it is fully compatible with the guides and files for the N7000.

The first posts are updated with any newer roms and procedures, all the info is at the beginning. Personally I read through the last 10 or so pages to familiarise myself with things to watch out for or avoid.
N7000B is compatible with N7000 roms and rooting.
