[Q] Odd bootloop issue i896 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, just revived my old captivate, was going to put ICS on it, was attempting to root, but the one click root program wasn't working, was hanging while rooting.
I tried factory wipe, and now I get stuck in a boot loop, it will boot the i896 bootscreen, the the Rogers screen, then reboot.
I've tried from there connecting to Kies, but it won't recognize it. I tried flashing stock Eclair to it using Odin, still bootloops, tried one click odin, still boot loops.
Any thoughts? Am I missing some obvious noob step? I don't have CWM or anything on it, just a stock 2.1 that won't boot.

Just tried flashing the AT&T firmware, same deal. Get past the ATT bootscreen, then the Galaxy S screen then it reboots.

Flashed Froyo, and it boots! But I can't root If I flash back to 2.1, back to bootloop.

Try to search around the forum for the stock recovery without signature checks. Once you have that, you can flash a rom. And most custom roms comes pre-rooted. You can also flash a kernel with Clockworkmod recovery built in, and flash the rom via CWM. Just read the Rom thread about installing.

Thanks, looking for that now, any idea where it might be to narrow my search? Hopefully this helps.

I think it should be in android development forum, in this captivate section. If your on a computer, you can search for it using the search box at the top.

If you're on Froyo, look for the speedmod kernel. If you can flash that via Odin/Heimdall, you should have root and CWM on your Froyo build.
The other option would be to flash a stock Gingerbread rom with CWM baked in - I believe that 4-2ndtwin has a KK4-based one-click with CWM and Gingerbread bootloaders in the Stock Roms Collection thread.

Flashed the Kernel through Odin, but on reboot there was no sound and the touchscreen didn't work. Managed to get into CWM, so I'll see how things go.

The kernel worked, got to CWM and flashed CM9, thanks for the help!

Clockwork Recovery Rogers 2.3.3

I have Rogers 2.3.3 Official installed and rooted, but every time I go to install Clockwork Recovery from Rom Manager, the Captivate is not listed as a device, I only get Galaxy S i9000, Galaxy S i9000 (MTD), Nexus S, Nexus S 4G. Is there another way to install it? or Did i do something to make the Captivate not show up? Thanks!
there is no CWM update.zip for gingerbread (CWM3) for the captivate.

So how are people getting it on there Captivates then? or do they flash all roms through odin?
If you're gonna flash a ROM, flash a kernel that has cwm included already with Odin, it's probably not going to boot all the way to Android with a different kernel, but just button combo into recovery and flash the ROM.

I tired flashing a kernel that has cwm from this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127578 but everytime I go in recovery it says "E:/can't mount /cache" etc..... Had to flash back to Rogers 2.3.3 kernel.
That's a beta kernel, just try an xcal kernel, talon, or darkcore. Hell even a froyo kernel should work for just getting cwm, and will be flashed over with the kernel included in the ROM.
Thank you so much for the crystal clear answers! so now that I have GB Bootloaders, can I pretty much flash whatever i897 or i896 rom I want?

yup. if you were to downgrade to a froyo rom, most of those use amend scripting (for cwm 2.5 and under) whereas the ginger roms now use cwm 3 which uses edify, so you would have to flash a froyo kernel wirt odin, or sgs kernel flasher app, button combo into recovery so that you have cwm 2.5.

I just try them all and they don't work! I'm getting bootloop! And now when I flashed back to Rogers Kernel, I'm also getting bootloop, I had to go in recovery and clear cache and userdata to fix it.

[Q] Unable to change Roms without going to stock

having a wierd problem, as the title says i am unalbe to change roms and have it boot.ever since i flashed the ROGERS 2.3.3 (containing i896 ROGERS bootloaders)
no big surprise i didnt like it.
while reading this keep in mind i have alot of experience flashing, and yes lagfix was disabled!
odin flashed a CWM kernel (one was using before rogers)
restored Nandroid. (of before ROGERS)
stuck at kernel screen
Flashed different kernel compatible with rom.
stuck at kernel screen
Loaded CWM to flash a custom rom.zip
flashed OK
reboot stuck at kernel screen
Odin flashed i9000 gingerbread (with i9000 GB bootloaders) from few months ago
stuck at kernel
Odin flashed ROGERS 2.1 eclair stock.
stuck at kernel
Odin flashed ATT one click
SUCCESS!!
Odin flahsed Rogers 2.1 eclair
SUCCESS!!
ODIN flashed i897 ATT GB bootloaders
ODIN flashed CWM kernel CWM flash ROM
Restore NANDROID
SUCCESS!!
finally back to normal...**never flashing rogers 2,3,3 again!
or so i thought.
got bored and went to flash a different ROM
STUCK AT KERNEL
had to repeat all above steps!! ALL before it was back to *normal* again
any thoughts to what got permanently messed up????
Did you try reformatting system and cache before flashing a new ROM in cwm? (i'm just guessing here)
yes and the Odin one click re-partitions - wiping everything known.but still the problem exists after flashing my 1st custom rom i am unable to boot into a second ANY rom (stock or custom)
and this is VERY frustrating as i just finnished my own custom ROM and am unable to quickly flash test versions.!!
I don't know. Odin one click should have fixed everything. Did you master clear/reformat the internal Sd?
no not the internal sd.
also i remembered at one point right after being on ROGERS stock 2.3.3
the first rom i tried flashing was a custom build I made with a kitchen tool using cygwin.
anyways after flashing and failing, i noticed the update script i created flashed the zimage to 2 different dev/bml blocks!! one i never seen before.
i stopped using that kitchen tool but is it possible it flashed something to a dev block that odin one click isnt clearing? but it repartitions. that should clear EVERYTHING!
still my problem presists...
flashing issues. cracked screen. might be time to buy a new phone.....
You could use Heimdall to dump your partitions and find out.
Heimdall print-pit...in case u didn't know

[Q] Rooted GT-I9000M but can't flash CWM

Hi there, I rooted my GT-I9000M on KG3 FW using this FW http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23560333&postcount=498 , downloaded Superuser and busybox, downloaded ROM Manager, flashed CWM, but when I'm trying to install custom roms, it boots up on Android System Recovery 3e instead of CWM Recovery. Did I missed something or I need to do something else to make it work ?
I've got the exact same problem.
Flashed stock kg3 pda,phone,csc
Flashed rooted kg3 (pda only in odin)
Installed superuser and busybox which seem to work correctly
installed rom manager and download cmw recovery.
Tried rebooting in cmw recovery and it does not work...
I don't think the cwm is the same...I believe that is just the simplest root directory possible, nothing more. Try flashing jvt or jw5 in pda and root that after with appropriate root kernel. Then you will have no issues. Besides there are no custom roms for kg3 anyway.

This is a good guide by All Gamer. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379650
I already saw that guide, but the JVP ROM is not available anymore. I googled it and I can't find it !
Guys just flash jw5 under pda and use the kg3 modem and csc. Then flash semaphore 2.7.4. tar. Problem solved. I have a bell Canada phone myself and this setup works great. Then you can flash ics or whatever in cwm. If you don't like ics, I recommend Dmore3.3 for jw5.

Is there any rooted kernel out there which I could use with stock kg3 rom and modem without losing anything at all?
So I could use cmw recovery for a nandroid backup of my phone?
thanks
I just did what vanisleryan said, but I still got the Android System Recovery 3e not the CWM Recovery. I'm totally lost now ...

Bud I'm running a custom rom installed through cwm and the instructions I gave are what I'm running right now. If you're rooted with the semaphore 2.7.4 kernel than you have cwm. Not sure what you did wrong? Go and install the cwm apk I think it's available in the chainfire thread.

OK, I figured how to get to CWM. When I'm trying to install the MIUI ROM, I got bootloops. Did I do something wrong or it's just an imcompatible ROM ?

Not sure but I think you might just need to pull the battery when it boot loops and go back into cwm with 3 button combo, install again and should complete install. It probably tells you installation instructions on thread. Man if you don't end up like miui then try Dmore3.3... It's rock solid and resembles ics but runs on gb.

I successfully installed MIUI and I love it. The only thing annoying is that it's showing numbers instead of my carrier name.
Maybe you need to install a different modem, where in the world do you live?

These are flashed in cwm.

I flashed the original UGKG3 and the "problem" still there.

My Cappy is freakin out !!!!

OMG, I had CM7 on it for about a year now, it's been great. Now I tried to flash a different (corn) kernel recovery to it and it's flippin out. I can't get it into recovery mode anymore, the 3 buttons or anything else I do just puts it into download mode. I've flash it back to a stock rom UCKK4 using a 1 click program and it'll boot up but I get all these weird colors on the screen before and after the AT&T logo, like the boot partition is corrupted. Oh man, I just wanted to put the corn recovery on it with cm9, plzzzz help. p.s. I really spent ALL day yesterday reading and trying to figure this out, hoping there was an easy fix.
Don't worry, it is an easy fix.
1. You can't use corn with CM, corn kernel is based off stock KK4 gingerbread.
2. The garbled screen you are getting means that you are trying to boot a gingerbread kernel without having gingerbread bootloaders. You need to flash a stock gingerbread package that includes them.

lol.... Now ya see how 1 gets confused. I read all over the forums and it says "If U EVER had the bootloader installed, you'll never need to do it again"...Aggghh. That was my NEWBIE yell. BTW, Ur here helping me again like a Guarding Angel, thank U!!! Should I flash a stock gngrbrd w/ bootloders AND CWM???

They meant gingerbread boot loaders because they are backwards compatible with froyo and eclair stock ROMs. Just download a one click stock gingerbread ROM with boot loaders and flash. I'd go for UCKK4 package provided by 4-2ndtwin with boot loaders and repartition

[Q] How to install CWM recovery of Captivate?

I have tried to flash speedmod kernel and use CWM from there but when i try to flash a rom it doesnt work and when i try to reboot it gets stuck at the boot animation. is there a way you can install CWM recovery that actually works? also if you can find an app like SGS kernel flasher except that flashes roms instead? i have tried using ROM Manager to flash CWM but all that happens is it says successfully flashed CWM recovery then when i boot into recovery it goes into android recovery 3e.
Rooted Samsung Captivate i897
use one click back to stock
Hello, what I do every time im stuck is go back to stock KK4 using one click odin.
from there then I use Odin 1.85 to flash Korn kernel.
Korn kernel include cwm, from there you can install other Roms or kernels, or just root.
regards.

In addition to what Zestar suggested I would recommend the KK4 with boot loaders.

Would help to know what is your goal (flash rom, kernel, modem or simply having cwm recovery). There is a well written guide in the Q&A: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
But Zestar pretty much explained it. You'll need Odin 1.85 (which you will find in the guide) and a custom kernel (doesn't matter much which one as long as it supports cwm recovery). You have a lot of reading to do before jumping into this and I highly suggest it! I also bricked once outta being hasty, won't happen again
