OMG, I had CM7 on it for about a year now, it's been great. Now I tried to flash a different (corn) kernel recovery to it and it's flippin out. I can't get it into recovery mode anymore, the 3 buttons or anything else I do just puts it into download mode. I've flash it back to a stock rom UCKK4 using a 1 click program and it'll boot up but I get all these weird colors on the screen before and after the AT&T logo, like the boot partition is corrupted. Oh man, I just wanted to put the corn recovery on it with cm9, plzzzz help. p.s. I really spent ALL day yesterday reading and trying to figure this out, hoping there was an easy fix.
Don't worry, it is an easy fix.
1. You can't use corn with CM, corn kernel is based off stock KK4 gingerbread.
2. The garbled screen you are getting means that you are trying to boot a gingerbread kernel without having gingerbread bootloaders. You need to flash a stock gingerbread package that includes them.

BTW, Ur here helping me again like a Guarding Angel, thank U!!! Should I flash a stock gngrbrd w/ bootloders AND CWM???

They meant gingerbread boot loaders because they are backwards compatible with froyo and eclair stock ROMs. Just download a one click stock gingerbread ROM with boot loaders and flash. I'd go for UCKK4 package provided by 4-2ndtwin with boot loaders and repartition

And did you flash your stock kernel back after the rooting?
When the phone goes into this loop it cant stop unless I take the battery out, after doing that I try and flash the stock 1 again and it shows the loadscreen and then goes into the loop again. I need urgent help please... I think I may have done some things wrong... Dont know what to do to get my phone just back to the way it was after I updated to 2.2.
Thanks for replying

Yes? So you can get easily into the download and recovery mode right? Try to flash some other kernel maybe. fugumod, cf root, speedmod or something .
What rom are you on and what are you trying to flash?
I am on froyo that I downloaded through kies, so now I tried to root my phone with fuguroot when this happened. Isnt there a way to go back to the stock froyo and try flashing fuguroot from there. Isn`t fuguroot and fugumod the same? Sorry for all these qeustions im new
Edit: The thread that i used is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010141

Fuguroot is just for rooting, not an actual kernel
Fugumod is a full kernel with which you can run your phone
And how did you flash fuguroot ? And where did you get the stock kernel?
Cuz right now I think you flashed a gingerbread kernel on your froyo rom after you rooted with fuguroot.
And the way back if you killed your rom. As long as you are able to get inside the download mode you can flash a full rom 3 parts (maybe with pit and repartition)
I can only get into download mode, recovery mode only shows load screen and hangs. Do I need fugumod to use fuguroot because the rooting wasnt successful thats what im struggling with. I only want to root my phone so I can use one of the lagfixes, dont know which one yet, can you maybe recommend a route for me to take
I flashed fuguroot using the .tar files in that thread throught odin, adding the file to pda and preesing start. It says it completed successfully but when it resets it wont stop.

Can you please answer me where you got your stock kernel from ? The one you flashed AFTER fuguroot? Then we can move further.
And also you dont need fugumod even though its a very good kernel. But not sure about the froyo version. First, WHAT did you flash after fuguroot?

So as I said, you flashed a gb kernel on a froyo rom. You need a froyo kernel. I have no idea where there are froyo stock kernels. For that you need to google or search here on xda.
or you can try the froyo versions of the kernels I wrote you a post up.
Ok thanks i will try that, will get back to you if i'm struggling
Edit: will this one work?

If no luck while searching stock kernels you can try this http://fugumod.org/zImage.2.7.tar <<< fugumod full kernel for froyo
or from here speedmod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
or voodoo or some cf root. really no idea where the stock kernels are
EDIT: that one you found, I dont know, and no idea if it will work. But if you wanna go custom. Try rather the kernels I posted up. (now I hope you have the I9000 too : )
Ive flashed a stock kernel that I found and it hanged at the loadscreen, after that tried flashing fugumod and it`s been hanging on fish logo for about 10 minutes already. Will keep it going a while to see if something happens.
I can however, get into recovery mode now. Is there something I can do from there?

You can try to do a factory reset from the recovery first.
I kinda hope you flashed a kernel for froyo this time. And flashing kernel over kernel and also gb. It might break your rom too. Depends on what the kernels are doing and applying.
If everything fails
Since you know how ot use ODIN if this doesnt work. I think you should try a whole new rom install. Either the one for your country as it is froyo. Or maybe try out the whole new shiny GB
Hi i am trying to flash my rom with a stock froyo rom but i'm not sure if im downloading the correct one. Ive found them here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913&highlight=galaxy+rom
And im downloading this one : I9000XWJS8|2.2.1|2011 March|Download
will it solve my problem?
Edit: After flashing a stock kernel a few minutes ago i am unable to go into recovery mode and it still hangs at boot screen, can someone please just give a quick overview on how to flash the new rom.
Thanks

Well I have no idea what rom you had before. From which country and csc you have. Also why are you trying to flash froyo if there is gingerbread?
And I guess the flashing of those custom kernels I wrote you didnt help?
Probably .
But if it fails flash via Odin stock Eclair 2.1 with pit 512 and repartition checked is my get out of jail card .

Hi there,
I had the issue that after apllying FuGus kernel, the phone kept looping in the loading phase (showing the battery symbol) and doing something (busy indicator). Nevertheless, I just switched it off (this worked) and installed the original kernel. Since then, everything works fine.
As I am not allowed to post answers in the dev branches --> @nikademus: Thanks a ton!

Is it safe to flash continuum 4.1 (Froyo version) while i have the gingerbread bootloaders on my phone? I ask because I have recently learned that some roms will change the second bootloader while flashing (cognition) which is no bueno if I still have GB bootloaders.
Thanks
Should be. I know v4 is safe to do, I did it myself. I also know that Cezar doesn't like messing with bootloaders, so I font think he would add one to 4.1,IMO

I want to see the difference between continuum 4.1 and 5.5 (mainly battery life)
For the install I figure I will flash the Onix kernal though odin with reboot unchecked then boot into recovery and flash the 4.1 rom. I reckon this should be safe eh?

Both have totally different bootloaders....Dont try this method u will hard brick your phone...try flashing stock using various methods written on the OP of Continuum 5.5....Dont be lazy and flash to stock to go back to froyo....u will have less chances of bricking ur phone
Also Onix is froyo kernel...I am sure it wont be compatible with GB rom

I don't think you read my post correctly. GB bootloaders work fine on froyo roms and really, the easiest way to hard brick the phone is while odin is flashing the bootloaders.
BTW you can flash a 2.2 kernal with reboot unchecked, pull the battery and boot directly into recovery mode to flash the 2.2 rom without issue. Continuum 4.1 does a full wipe anyway.
Thanks for your opinion tho.

Cezar has a "safe"method to return to stock (jf6). It is jf6 tar, without bootloaders. It had its own thread in development, and its also available in the op of the 5.5 thread. If you follow the op, you should be ok.
I'm currently using teamhacksung's ICS, but I want to go back to GB now. Some people are telling me to flash stock WITHOUT bootloaders and some are saying
flash WITH bootloaders >.> so.. with or without? that is the questions
also, I can just cwm right? I don't really like odin
I don't think you need boot loaders but you need Odin or heimdall as cm roms use a different partitioning system than regular roms
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
No you can't just use cwm while you have mtd partitions to flash a touch wiz rom. You need Odin. Of you already have gingerbread boot loaders there its no point I'm flashing them again.
Edit: got ninja'd by a teammate
guys I tried to flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285616
but it didnt work it was stuck at one point and failed... any suggestions on what to do?
Hey all, just revived my old captivate, was going to put ICS on it, was attempting to root, but the one click root program wasn't working, was hanging while rooting.
I tried factory wipe, and now I get stuck in a boot loop, it will boot the i896 bootscreen, the the Rogers screen, then reboot.
I've tried from there connecting to Kies, but it won't recognize it. I tried flashing stock Eclair to it using Odin, still bootloops, tried one click odin, still boot loops.
Any thoughts? Am I missing some obvious noob step? I don't have CWM or anything on it, just a stock 2.1 that won't boot.
Just tried flashing the AT&T firmware, same deal. Get past the ATT bootscreen, then the Galaxy S screen then it reboots.
Flashed Froyo, and it boots! But I can't root If I flash back to 2.1, back to bootloop.
Try to search around the forum for the stock recovery without signature checks. Once you have that, you can flash a rom. And most custom roms comes pre-rooted. You can also flash a kernel with Clockworkmod recovery built in, and flash the rom via CWM. Just read the Rom thread about installing.

Thanks, looking for that now, any idea where it might be to narrow my search? Hopefully this helps.
I think it should be in android development forum, in this captivate section. If your on a computer, you can search for it using the search box at the top.

If you're on Froyo, look for the speedmod kernel. If you can flash that via Odin/Heimdall, you should have root and CWM on your Froyo build.
The other option would be to flash a stock Gingerbread rom with CWM baked in - I believe that 4-2ndtwin has a KK4-based one-click with CWM and Gingerbread bootloaders in the Stock Roms Collection thread.

Flashed the Kernel through Odin, but on reboot there was no sound and the touchscreen didn't work. Managed to get into CWM, so I'll see how things go.
The kernel worked, got to CWM and flashed CM9, thanks for the help!
I dont think it matters what I did to get it bricked. If it does. Then I will. It's just a long story.
The situation is, my captivate is stuck on the boot screen.
I cant get into recovery.
And the only way I can get into "download mode" is by taking out the battery. Putting it back in. hold both volume buttons and inserting the usb.
And now I'm on the screen with and android shoveling in a triangle. and under it is DOWNLOADING...".
What do I do now? Thanks in advance. :good:
but please help asap. A bit worried and want to fix this fast!
Well now you just have to flash a stock ROM through Odin or Heimdall.

Go down to post #3. It has the Stock KK4 Gingerbread rom. From there you can use the Utility in my signature to add the Corn Kernel 7.0A to get you root and cwm.
