3 combos buttons work ?
Vol down+home+power on/off ?
Vol Up + home+ power on/off ?
if yes, try to flash the correct rom for I9000M
If you can get into download mode, and Odin sees your phone, then it is very unlikely that you bricked it.
Just flash Darkys ressurection or stock Samsung ROM from Odin.
ok installed darkys, now all phone does is flash galaxy i9000 screen
managed to get past that screen and back to recovery mode, and still d/l mode, trying EZBASE now as i was getting as far as colour S then bursts of vibrations
UPDATE:
stuck on boot loop now, still can access recovery and d/k mode, after trying to install EZBase. is their any other siggestions.
pref, instructions and files for re-loading stock firmware for australia on it, if memory calls had 2.2 of eclair
still no luck people, any further advice please
I just had the same issue with my i9000m. Download the fireware I9000UGJL2.exe from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913
It fixed my issue instantly. Then go to that kitchen rom website and create your own ROM. My phone has never been faster. GPS works very good, way better than before. Even cell service is 100000000000 times better....
ok, good news is i have it working stock rom and rooted, got most aps back on, now my issue is, i cant install clockwork recovery from rom manager, i tried it via odlin and got the screen of phone and pc and the exclamation mark. can some1 please help out as to how i can get clockwork recovery mod installed.

Go to D/L mode and reflash the kernal.
So you tried flashing Chainfires JVB kernal on a 2.1 rom?
I think that's the problem....

ok thanks, what should i flash then, or how can i update to 2.2 or 2.3 without loosing files and apps ?
Man you should not try to flash things when you don't understand them.
For this moment you tried to flash a kernel that is for a gingerbread rom (JVB, android 2.3.3) on your Eclair 2.1. Don't you think you should read a bit more before flashing everything on your phone?
Go to the official rom thread and follow the guides to flash a gingerbread(2.3.3) or Froyo(2.2) rom
Ok ill put this as plain and as simple as i can
1. I am new to flashing
2. I asked how to do it, as after all this is a q&a section
3. I feel my questions hvae not been answered correctley
so i shall explain again and this time links may help
1. I want a kernal that will give me recovery options
2. I do not want to loose anything on the phone
3. I want to upgrade to 2.3
so i would like links please or someone who can take the time to write a quicvk step list telling me what to do.
You really need to go to main thread and all info is there, it would take ages to talk you out of this...its all out there, seek and you shall find, its tough love

Hi guys. Recently I bought a used I896 with I897UCKF1 2.3.3 firmware. I cannot root it or upgrade it to ICS cos I have a problem: when I press vol down button plus power button to enter download mode the phone boots normally. When I press vol up plus power button instead of recovery mode my phone enters "Android system recovery <3e>". Any advice what to do?
The combination for recovery is vol up/down+power. You will need to flash a kernel with ClockworkMod recovery baked in.
Why didn't you also tell him the proper dl mode combo?
Anyway... Its both volume buttons only, no power at all, and inserting a USB cable that boots into download mode.
[QUOTEAnyway... Its both volume buttons only, no power at all, and inserting a USB cable that boots into download mode.[/QUOTE]
Thans a lot man. My Cappy is now rooted and having 2.3.5. Right now I'm looking for a stable ICS rom. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Can you recommend me a kernel with cwm recovery? In my Samsung recovery menu 3e I do not have "install zip from sd card" option. Or may I use Rom Manager Premium to install ICS .zip rom?
If you are on Gingerbread and an i897 rom (KF1 would meet that requirement), you can flash boog's kernel, which will have CWM baked in.
You'll need to use something like Odin or Heimdall to get there, which boog includes in the files listed above.
The other option is to flash a stock rom with a CWM kernel included, like the one in my signature.
I'm on UCKK4 - 2.3.5. Is it ok to flash that kernel? And I ask you guys who have ICS on your Cappy is it worth to install it now or should I wait for more stable versions?
You should be able to use Boog's kernel. If you want to be 100% sure of a match, you can try corn kernel KK4.
ICS is pretty great, but be aware there is a risk (although small) of the internal SD card being messed up. Look for "Encryption Unsuccessful" in the development forum - if you flash ICS, just know what to do if that situation happens.
Hmm, you made think about it. I'm not so sure anymore about ICS. I think it's better waiting for a while. I also have a i9000 and installed ICS on it and there was a problem with external sd.
Finally I installed a 4.0.3 rom and I have to admit it was a mistake. Now I'm looking forward to get back to UCKK4 2.3.5 but I don't really know how to do it. On my internal memory I have the backup of the 2.3.5 version made before getting to 4.0.3 and I tried to restore it from the recovery menu but it doesn't work. I think I'm missing something. Can you help me? Thankx.

You'll need to flash back to the 2.3.5 rom you had before flashing to ICS (whatever rom you were using when you made the backup), then restore the backup in recovery.

Grab an Odin or Heimdall one-click to get back to stock KK4, and flash that. Once you've flashed back to stock KK4, if you were using any custom rom (anything non-stock), flash that to your phone. (The idea is to be as close to your previous setup as you can be.)
Once you've done those steps, reboot into recovery and go to "backup/restore". In the restore options, look for the backup you made and restore it.

Ok, if you say so, I'll try it. It crossed my mind to give ICS the second chance but I didn't know exactly what rom to try. I supose I need to do a wipe cache from recovery mode and after this I have to use the option install from sd card? Am I right?

I'm not sure what that file is - it may be fine, but I don't want to say "flash away!" and leave you with a messed up phone.
I would suggest going here and grabbing the non-bootloader Odin one-click (assuming one-clicks have worked for you in the past). Flash that, and you should be good to go with KK4.

Check out my thread titled JellyUI in the Captivate Dev section. Instructions on how to flash the rom are in the first post. Enjoy
I actually think this is not a bad place for the post although Q&A would be better. I recently tried to bring my old cappy from stock to ICS. I had gingerbread but when I tried to flash CM9, I must have had an old CWM that was not compatible and got into a bootloop where the only way out was to odin back to stock. Then I had a nearly impossible time finding all the files that would allow me to get to ICS. Designgear's and a number of other files referenced throughout the dev section for upgrading have bad links now. I am on an i9000 bootloader with 2 button recovery (since the easiest way to get back to GB was to flash S7v3 with Odin since all the referenced files are still there) but cannot figure out an easy way to get a 3 button CWM even after spending a few days looking for a way to do it just using Odin and CWM as I did in the past. After a lot of trial and error and even getting to a point where I could not get into download mode anymore, I did get CM9 flashed eventually but I will not try again until I figure out how to at least get a 3 button CWM. I went almost two years as a cappy flashaholic and never once had to use ADB or Heimdall, so would prefer not to if possible.
If someone could provide a list of valid links to all the files that are necessary to go from stock to being able to flash ICS or JB roms, I will archive the files so they won't be lost.

I tried the 1st part but my phone automatically booted into recovery mode after the 1st Odin Flash.
If that was after u flashed the GB Bootloaders, that is ok. Just pull battery, replace it, get back into download mode and then Odin flash the Speedmod kernel so u can get the CWM Recovery. Then u can flash ur Rom of choice from there.

So does the speedmod kernal have CWM Recovery on it? I don't need to add that?
Also do I need to do a wipe?
That is all that u r Odin flashing the Speedmod kernel for...just to get to the CWM Recovery.
Just like the Guide states---after u Odin flash the kernel use the Button combo to reboot into Recovery. That kernel is not there to boot ur phone up, only there for u to use cwm.
And usually the Rom u flash will do a full wipe. But u can do it in the recovery if u want before u flash ur rom.

Cool thanks! I was thinking of doing a the latest Cyanogen 7.2 Rom or the Cyanogen 9.1 Rom. They are both on my Cappy.
OMG, I had CM7 on it for about a year now, it's been great. Now I tried to flash a different (corn) kernel recovery to it and it's flippin out. I can't get it into recovery mode anymore, the 3 buttons or anything else I do just puts it into download mode. I've flash it back to a stock rom UCKK4 using a 1 click program and it'll boot up but I get all these weird colors on the screen before and after the AT&T logo, like the boot partition is corrupted. Oh man, I just wanted to put the corn recovery on it with cm9, plzzzz help. p.s. I really spent ALL day yesterday reading and trying to figure this out, hoping there was an easy fix.
Don't worry, it is an easy fix.
1. You can't use corn with CM, corn kernel is based off stock KK4 gingerbread.
2. The garbled screen you are getting means that you are trying to boot a gingerbread kernel without having gingerbread bootloaders. You need to flash a stock gingerbread package that includes them.

They meant gingerbread boot loaders because they are backwards compatible with froyo and eclair stock ROMs. Just download a one click stock gingerbread ROM with boot loaders and flash. I'd go for UCKK4 package provided by 4-2ndtwin with boot loaders and repartition

I received the Captivate from a friend of mine who complained that AT&T kept bricking his device through Kies and OTA updates. He never was able to update his device to Froyo. I unlocked the device to work on my carrier and then I tried Kies on 3 different computers (running XP and 7), and my device was stuck on the AT&T screen. Using odin oneclick, I got my firmware back to UCJF6 (stock Eclair). Since then, I've tried nearly every one click available (that hasn't been deleted off the internet), I've tried updating bootloaders and installing a separate kernel before flashing a rom in CWM:
However, the device would not boot into recovery mode after following these steps:
Anyone have any suggestions? Never have I had such a frustrating phone, and that has some merit after owning a Motorola XT720.
Have u tried this one With Bootloaders http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912.
Then use the regular Odin to flash the .tar file version of the KK4 Corn Kernel v7.0A that will give u CWM Recovery and u could proceed from there to a Dev's Rom.

I flashed using Odin with BL, then i flashed KK4 Corn Kernel v7.0A. Now I try restarting my device and booting it into recovery mode, and it doesn't work..? Recovery mode has never worked on this device unless I run an ADB command in CMD or using an app with root access.
I've been holding down all 3 buttons for 3-5 seconds and releasing, tried using the up button too the same way.
If I leave the device running, it stays stuck on the AT&T screen.

Okay, I must be missing something here, because none of the oneclicks work except for designgears stock 2.1 ROM (I897UCJF6).
I'm going to start over and i hope someone here can guide me in the right direction:
I'm running stock 2.1 ROM, might as well be straight out of the box. I want to upgrade to 2.3 with GB BL so that I can flash whatever ROM i wish in the future. Kies Mini doesn't work, so that's out of the picture.
The One Clicks that 4-2ndtwin post a link to (both IlluminatedOne's and his own) do not work, meaning that I get stuck at the AT&T screen and it just pauses there. I have no problem getting into Download Mode or Recovery Mode while using the WORKING 2.1 I897UCJF6 ROM, however if I run ANY of the oneclicks other than I897UCJF6, i cannot boot into Recovery Mode.
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, I have the 64bit drivers installed. I have tried Windows XP as well.
Sorry for the double post, but what in the world do I do?

Maybe this
I upgraded from stock Froyo 2.1 rooted to GB 2.3.5 with bootloaders using this package:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285616.
If you look here at post #3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912
it says this:
**Once u have the i897 Gingerbread Bootloaders, it is not necessary to flash bootloaders again. The i897 Gingerbread Bootloaders are backwards compatible, therefore you can flash Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, CyanogenMod, and MIUI Firmware/Roms without the bootloaders included, per the proper install instructions.**
Maybe your boot conflict is because you're trying to load the GB bootloaders again and there are 2 boot files or a glitched boot file. I'm no expert but I tend to go back to the simplest reason when I'm troubleshooting something that should work. Though it seems like a complete wipe and re-partition would delete bootloaders, maybe it doesn't from the sound of the above.
Try the package without bootloaders from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285616
It loads the rom and the kernal with CWM all at once with a full wipe and repartition.
I always remove the Sim and external sd card before flashing and disable my anti-virus when I'm in Winblows.
I hope SOMETHING works for you.

Have you tried getting into recovery when its stuck at the att screen and clear the cache or whatever other clearing you can do? Maybe CWM will be loaded. If it re-boots while holding the three button recovery method, that may be a good sign. Then at the re-boot, let go of the power button at the next att screen.
Does Odin give it a pass?
Are the roms your flashing rooted before you flash? In other words is Eclair rooted and then all others?
Pull the battery at the att screen?
Or go back into download mode and re-flash if that doesn't work.
I'm just guessing and the last 2 suggestions could be dangerous.......................I don't know.
Edit: Have you tried this?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364. It has a root file and a CWM file for Eclair. I tried the links to those and they did connect.

I've found that when applying the stock Eclair ROM, it never says "pass", it says reset--however it works and reboots into 2.1update1. My phone isn't rooted, it has been though. I've realized that some oneclicks say "Re-partition, Full Wipe". My experience is that my phone never enters recovery mode so my phone never wipes anything like the oneclick intends to do. I have not been able to enter recovery mode once I have flashed 2.2 or even 2.3 with or without bootloaders. Do you guys think that's the problem? And if it is, how would I enter recovery if the button combo doesn't work...?

Pulling the battery is not a great idea, it's only when it's "needed".
OP, I'm must say I'm quite confused myself, none of it makes sense.. Although, did you try flashing a 2.2 custom ROM?
I'm thinking you have some either bad or corrupted files/hardware keeping you from flashing but if you're able to flash a custom ROM, then there might be hope.
Also, a JTAG/box might work. They now flash stock GB and could *maybe* overwrite w/e in your phone that is messing with all your flashing.
BTW, it sounds like you are doing the wrong thing to get into recovery. Hold both volume keys, and then press the power button as you would to turn the phone on normally/until the screen turns on. Then, keep holding the volume buttons until you see recovery.
And which at&t screen are you stuck on? The very first one or the boot animation?

That's the strange thing, it will NOT boot into recovery when I flash say KK4. I hold the volume buttons for over 30 seconds, and it just stays at the AT&T screen. It gets stuck before the boot animation, I never see it when I try to flash anything 2.1+. I have booted into recovery mode before, so I know that I am doing the button combo properly.
