[WEEKLY POLL][N0.1]What is the best MS Office suit? - Nexus S Themes and Apps

I am starting a poll series, with one new poll on APPS and THEMES every week. Please vote above and we all appreciate your help in choosing the best apps for our beloved Nexus S.
This week's question is: What is the best MS compatible Office app for free and paid?

i choice smartoffice2 due to hardware accel. and best document interpretation (only read, not modify)
the only problem is the invasive and non-android compliant interface

quickoffice!

i've tried docs to go, quickoffice, and office suite. voted for officesuite as it was the only one i could find that could properly handle password protected files. this was somewhere around christmas time though so...maybe things have changed.

Buy a winmo if you want the best office suite. This is Android, we have Google docs. Period
I am Shark On Land, and I approve of this message.

Kingsoft- it's the only one of ALL of those that'll open my huge human geography powerpoints with 100+ slides and, even tho the background loses some of its eye candy, it's good enough for me.

I personally prefer think free, it is fully featured and I'm just used to it.
oops! accidentally beamed from my awesome NEXUS S!

Anyone looking for an app for a specific use? we can have a poll to help!

SmartOffice2 has one very nice feature that I think is unavailable on other suites: the ability to convert Office files to pdf.

Little late, but office suite pro is on sale for 99¢ on the play store until tomorrow.thought I'd share.I had to buy it.

Mortgage Payment Calculator needed for Pocket PC

I'm a loan officer, looking for a basic Mortgage Payment Calculator for my Tilt. I saw several software programs available after doing a google browse. Just wanted to get some input from other pocket pc users. I don't need anything fancy just some thing basic to calculate Rate/Term & Interest Only payments while away from my office. I don't mind paying for the software but of course would prefer a trial version first.
Any suggestions?
I know I'm not the only mortgage guy with a Kaiser/Tilt that's still afloat in this ugly market ; )
Its you're lucky day..

Hey Roadmenace...
I'm a loan officer cum realtor and have been using the best one that was ever created for pocket pc. How I know this is because I've tried pretty much each and every title thats available on handango/pocketgear.com over the past 4 or so years.. yup! that means from the days of WM2003. And its pretty ironic that having tried some costing as much as $50, the best one was and is totally free.
It was written by one Greg Fischer from Australia, a mortgage rep himself based down under. Its called mortgage calc and I believe it had over a million or so downloads to its name on the above sites back in the days.
However, the person stopped updating it beyond its 3.4 build for over a year and that too for just WM2003se. After a hiatus of over a year and my persistent googling I found his amateur site again and he had actually re-written the whole thing for WM5/6 and its now version 3.5
Sorry for the lesson in history.. I had to cuz if you'd known about it, the software was literally a "living legend" in its category.
Some of the fancy calculators built in it are no longer there for the WM5/6 versions but its still hands down the best you're gonna find hands down.
Here's the link to the website:
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~gm_fisher/Main.htm
and I'm attaching the .cab as well.
A great free option is Microsoft Excel. You can set it up to calculate any of the variables that you mention - rate, # of payments, necessary downpayment, etc. You can also use it for irregular mortgage terms as well. If you are not proficient in Excel, you can download templates directly from Microsoft or from www.vertex42.com (or just do a google search).
This is a great, free option (I think that Excel is the best software ever created, so I am a little bias) IMHO.
Excel is VERY useful. I don't know if it's the best though... I pick notepad.
I am wondering with the difference between a mortgage
Hi, I am wondering with the difference between a mortgage APR and Interest Rate? My mortgage interest rate is 6.875% and the APR is 7.504% does the APR of 7.504% sound right if the interest rate is 6.875%? My mom said that the 2 numbers should be closer together than that. Also, my mortgage banker never mentioned an APR, and since we are 1st time home buyer's, we were unaware of it. We only knew about the Interest rate. Can you please help me?

Financial manager software reccomendations.

First off, I must say I love this site....
It took me some time (tons of coffee & reading) to learn about unlocking the powers of this phone. As it stands now, I'm only 1/2 retarded
The good news is I have just about every program that I think I need with the exception of a "good" financial manager. The problem is, most of the "good" ones are paid softwares. That fine, I don't mind paying, but I'd like to ask the pros/vets of xda before purchasing one. Some come with a 30 day trial, others do not. I didn't find any thread here on financial manager or financial software, but I did see the wiki but, it only included SBP's software & a link to http://www.pocketgear.com/en_US/html/all_titles_list.jsp?categoryId=cat4500055
but forgive me if I don't trust their "highest rated" system...
I came across http://doitech.com/ & it looks promising, but for some reason I can't get it to install.
I also tried splashmoney (was recommended in a pocket PCmag, that shall remain nameless....) & I found it a bit clunky & un-polished, not to mention, my banking institution wasn't in their list, even though its one of the larger banks.
So XDA peeps, what software do you recommend?
Thanks in advance..
I've owned SBP Finance for about 2 years... and haven't thought once about changing it. I like it alot.
It's fast, logical, powerful. I track all my accounts on it... keep my register... etc. The interface is easy to use.
I like the reports and the ability to export and import quicken files.
It takes care of all my needs.
Yeah, I just installed it now that I noticed they do have a trial period.
Once I purchase it, will I be able to maintain my crazzzy ROM flashing lifestyle of changing my rom 10 times a week??
Thanks in advance rickC
Make sure you use the autobackup feature if you become a ROM junky like me
I still haven't found one I like.... SBP is ok... but it doesn't reach out and scream to me... eerrr I mean it doesn't meet all my needs..
I personally like SPB Finance, but you can also try Innesoft Cash Organizer Premium at US$29.95. There is a free trial on their site:

Why does Google hold events on days Microsoft has already chosen for big events?

This is something that just occured to me. Microsoft always comes out with dates for big events and after a few days you also hear Google planning an event on that same day; time and location may vary though. For example; Google released the soo called Motorola Droids the same day Microsoft talked about Windows Phone 8...I think a couple of months ago. Now Microsoft has planned Windows Phone 8 launch on October 29th and as you all know from last week, Google has also planned to release the next Nexus on that same day....Now is this a coincidence or Foul play??
Foul play in a sense to divide the number of techies who will attend these events....as you know these two giant companies don't go along very well (Google being too stingy with Microsoft and even refusing to release offical apps for Windows Phone.....and what pains me a lot is Microsoft always taking care of them by releasing beautiful apps and better servicies to Android)....but this is a different discussion alltogether.
What do you think??
Google hates everything there is to be about ms, cause ms is their prime competitor:
1) Bing -> this search engine is pretty powerful and offers results as good as Google's. A shame it doesn't come in all languages. Google tried several time to discredit bing,
2)Chroome OS-> this is Google's attempt at removing windows from its monopole position over OS. Of course, it failed dramatically.
3) Windows Phone -> Of course Google finds it a threat, a pretty big one. After Samsung lost the battle with apple, Google is kinda scared that their biggest client, Samsung, might go around and make more WP instead. There is also the nostalgic popularity of Nokia, which did come back in play with the Lumia line.
So google does try to minimize the impact of Microsoft over its domains as much as possible. However, from a consumer's point of view, having at least two players that are actually in conflict (Apple vs google does not count, apple does not care about google),is a good thing, so I hope MS will succeed.
These were exactly my thoughts and I think it's clear enough to be known by everyone in the tech industry.

Actually I don't think google finds WP as a threat... Android has a bigger share of the mobile market whereas iOS is slowly losing the pace...all in all while WP is eating on BlackBerry and symbian...

....yeah and maybe when WP eats BB and Symbian, they'll grow and attack them. I don;t think Google is looking at the race now but in five years time....where most giants are going to fall since they'll have nothing more to offer. Lets just hope all goes well.
This is a fairly standard industry practice and they all do it to each other whenever possible. No point in singling out any one of them.
Moved to Q&A as this is a question thread.

The bitterness is only set to grow as MS has just named google in its case against Motorola. Google is running out of friends as they leave there oems open to attack and steal tech without the ability to defend there moves. Google is a vile company Android is a great OS its my second love to WP like a second child but Google over all makes companies like Fox, BP, British Gas etc look like saints

Thanks for the correction mf2112.
Come to think of it, if this a fairly standard industry practice and Company giants all doing whatever (Gorilla warfare) to each other whenever possible, why is Microsoft always kind and releasing apps for them whilst they have never released anything for WP since it came out 2 years ago? Microsoft even planning on releasing Office for Android and iOS in 2013. Is Microsoft afraid? or trying to be a Mother? I understand when it comes to the market size and all about Benjamins, but it should be tit for tat. Microsoft should stop offering them good services if they are not doing same for us.....maybe I'm missing something and you can make me understand.
One will say WP market size is soo tiny that Google refuses to release anything for them...some sort of market demand should be in play...BUT, if you are a big company like Google and really want your services to be popular and widespread (Google+ challenging Facebook), will you think about Market share of a competitor before releasing an app for it? Does Facebook think about market share of a mobile OS before releasing it's app? They just release it no matter what because they want it to be used and popular...more benjamins
Google should just understand that, not all consumers will love their mobile OS but at least one consumer will use at least one of their services. (I for one use Google scholar, Gogle+, Google Drive as a backup to my Skydrive and Google maps A LOT) Why shouldn't I have an app for any of these Google services? Because my beloved WP OS is a competitor with a tiny market share and there's no demand? Why should Google punish me if I'm not using Android OS? and why should they force me to use it? SMH

Well, having worked at Microsoft twice and for Microsoft partner companies previously and currently, I would hesitate at describing Microsoft's business practices as "kind".
It is not that Google doesn't want to offer services to Windows Phone users, it is that they want to do so on their terms. Microsoft would prefer to dictate the terms in such an engagement. Apple dictates the terms for iOS devs and how the apps get distributed in the app store. Oracle tries to control their environment. All companies do this as much as they can, so nothing out of the ordinary there.
Google also has a limited number of developers available to spend on projects and they want those developers to spend their time on the things that are going to be most beneficial (profitable) to Google in the end. All companies have business strategies and different behaviors but in general the profit motive is the driving factor. This is true for Microsoft as well.
Many people use Google's services. It actually is a pretty big thing for many people to at least have them available and by not having them available for WP they can in fact impact the growth of the Windows Phone platform (YouTube being a great example there). So unless Microsoft gains enough Marketshare to make it problematic for Google to leave them out I guess this situation will continue.
Concerning how Microsoft deals with Android and iOS the situation is different. Those two OSes basically own the market. Unless Microsoft wants those users to go with alternative Software they have to have there core applications available there. This means that Bing, SkyDrive, Xbox Live and Office have to be available there. For other Apps they go with the iPhone partly because it was not yet viable to do on the Windows Phone platform (e.g. PhotoSynth) but you will notice that Android is quite often left out or only done quite some time later.
I actually don't see the benefit of hosting those events on days when Microsoft is releasing Windows Phones. The Lumias arguably had more publicity then the lackluster Razr series that left journalists rather disappointed. Also the new Nexus 4 seems to bring little new stuff to the table. If they were to launch a really new version of Android like during I/O or if Apple launched the iPad mini on the same day they actually might hurt Microsoft but with stuff like this they rather risk being second page news themselves.
But we will see what they are bringing to the table this time around.

So ,I think this year just the same.

They've tried to point out before that Bing is ripping off Google search results and they have some very compelling evidence that this is the case:

I thought this was pretty much accepted as common knowledge now... unless you have another explanation as to how Bing returned the same results as Google after the Google experiment?

As if google doesn't use all kind of software to see what you are looking for on the web with other search engines.
It is just that they never did something against any other engine because Bing is the only real threat.
I agree

That's a diffferent tangent from what youj quoted. Using other engines search results is weak. Seeing what other engines come up with is smart.
Since you said bing is a threat, how is that so ?
Aside from that the Bing Bar looks at all Search-Input fields and reports what search parameters made people end up at certain sites. Therefore if you enter "HTC Titan" in the Search-Box of the XDA-Developers Forum Bing will take that one up too and report back which topic of the presented list you then chose (given that if you search for something and then select a certain result it is highly likely that you thought it was relevant in the context of your search).
It is one of many signals Bing relies on in it's rankings. But given that the search term only appeared in the tests of Google's team it was the only hint available for the search. This still is not copying of Google's search results at large.
The search engine discussion is somewhat offtopic here - don't you think?
absorootly!

SNote - kinda crappy

For a company that is so good at something's , this is a pretty bad app and desktop experience.
I am a heavy user of Gnote and Evernote.
And of late Synology notes..
You would think that since you have spent a zillion won on development of a phone with a great pen setup you would also spent a bit more time on making sure the note taking ability can be..
A. Be Synched .. (sync is on for notes on my phone and shows its synced to thier cloud via the bytes).
B. The file format can be read by your own desktop program. (The desktop version I have found is an April 2018).
While it will view/import a exported pdf..
it will give you an option to backup a *sdoc file but not import it.. (what's the point of this?)
So on Both of these above there is a fail at this point in my tests..
(due to miss-understanding by the reply posters to the original post I have edited to be clear about what has been tested)
While the phone shows that the notes have been sent to Samsung cloud..they are not linked back to the desktop app..
ie the desktop application not sync with the "said notes" after checking log in a few times..
As a suggestion (and this doesn't not have to be driven by the Korean side but could be by the international components within Samsung development).
Samsung development team, if you want to see a good note app in action buy yourself a Synology NAS and reverse engineer thier app and desktop program. ****..
As a suggestion to put forward a worthy idea..
"if your a lowly Samsung engineer, I have just given you a leg up the ladder.. crack this and you have made yourself a job..it would be then the best business tool ever. Especially for the Dex software development..'
Ok.. so we have on the desktop program the ability to import .SPD...snb...pdf
But not the *.sdoc export from phone.. transfered via network storage..But it will see the pdf version.
Really..
You can export the *.sdoc android format out but can't even import it into your own desktop app.
What's the point of that???
Seems the tail of the Samsung donkey is not talking to the head..
(reference to post 5 on this one,
as it seems that some have taken this as aimed at a nationality which has been explained,
it is not a jab at anyone but a jab at interdepartmental development for a better product offering..
as it happens this is not only a problem for Samsung but for a great many companies)
Rant over..[emoji41]

Pull ya head in..
who said anything about nationality?
Samsung is a multi national with programmers across the globe if you haven't noticed..
It's a review of said program..
And as one of my roles in this life is as a teacher and trainer I am pretty sure that the mix of Grammer I have used comes from yea old book of 'English'..
Not a 'hey Google - give me American English' computer driven set.
The point is.. and if you had done any research..
is that if you did..
you will find that it's been a few years since the first Samsung notes came out and since then they have gone backwards with it..
Not "dust" I would say that, plenty out in WWW land on it..
I would have used it on my Samsung Nexus 10 and a few other Sammy devices but as there are others ie Evernote that do the job well.
As a reference I travelled and worked across 38 sites in China and used Evernote extensively over a 4 year period.. while I had the Samsung Nexus 10 with the first Snotes on it..it never cut the cake for a truely worthwhile app. -- yes..went from the Asus Transformer to the N10 as a travel tablet ..
With a but of luck, it will get better and get the attention it deserves if it is viewed as a business app.. which by all accounts the phone is being aimed at..
Think Dex... As the feeling of a new ecosystem coming . (Refer to video added in next post of mine as there is clear indication that Samsung is aiming Dex as a B2B situation with customised B2B branded apps)
Anyway..ya'all got anything to say about the program or you just spamming threads?
On that note..pardon the pun..
Evernote writing works fine..
Synology note writing is still a bit too "artbrush' as in thick pen lines so as a note taker in meetings not quite there..
And to carry the theme on.. the new Lenovo with a touch keypad and writing abilities is looking good.. this is where it would be cool to see a foldable screen that is touch sensitive be made..something like that could be coming in a cover and we could fold it out to write on with the pen and with Bluetooth connectivity..
Bring back the pen and hand writing!!!!!

Jezz you got a bee in ya bonnet..
Since you can't let it go..
Exactly where with in the first post is there any reference to a nationality or a belittlement of one?.. please quote it...
The reference to "won" is in reference to money spent in research..
You might want to consider....
"what and how" you read something is not how the writer has "framed it"
What's going on in your head has nothing to do with this conversation about whether the note program with in the N9 is..
1. Synching to the desktop programme..
(As pointed out..for me it's not..
do some testing and report back if it works for you)
The ability for you to export a file prefix of *.sdoc to be exported back into the desktop program.. works or doesn't work..
(As noted, you can't do it and the program itself will not see the very format..but will see the older versions and pdf versions..)
As noted..I was able to find an April 2018 version of the desktop program..
Thus..the conclusion is..
There is not a lot of development going into this..
Which in fact could be and then make this a useful tool set for sammy mobile users for not only the educational space but business.
But as you only want to play the man and not the topic..
I suggest you bow out or report the original post.. and or post something on topic..and not out of your 'what I think I am reading into it'
And to just be clear of where the post comes from..
I do use the phone for business and have been playing around with pdf signatures.
Thus the ability to be on the road and getting a client to sign using the phone would be a fantastic tool..
At the moment I have been testing getting a client to sign into the note app..(as generally for compliance type documentation there is 10+ signatures)..
The ability to to transfer a high resolution copy out of the Samsung app in its native format is not there..as there is nothing to read it with.
It is noted that it will transfer as a pdf but this is then a flattened document and not as high resolution and or transparent background that would be ideal for electronic signatures.
And since I alluded to the Dex eco system. Which I term as ecosystem as the little I have played with it, is limited in apps that work well within it (for now)..
Reference..

For the avid reader that has posted crap about the original post being aimed at Koreans, please note that the above video seems to me to be a multi racial character..do note he uses a lot of "we at Samsung are developing"...
All good.. as said..with luck they see value in this app and allocation of resources into it.
Personally I would like them to fold it into something like a full word processing type situation.
And as noted, users of Synology NAS have a great suite of apps at thier finger tips to use with a beast like the N9 on the road..

I do use the phone for business and have been playing around with pdf signatures.
Thus the ability to be on the road and getting a client to sign using the phone would be a fantastic tool..
on of resources into it.

Aside from your horribly racist comments about Koreans (for shame). If you want signatures have you tried the Write On PDF app by Samsung that's in the playstore?

Dam..you guys are coming out of the wood work..
Let's get this straight...
As a person that has lived and worked in Asia for 15+ years.. China/Indonesia/Philippines plus have worked in Silicon Valley with Italians/Mexicans/Indians..
You guys are so barking up the wrong tree..
And yes, I have spent plenty of time in Korean/Japanese/German/Dutch factories in China..
So let's set this record straight..
Rant is at Samsung the company not the country or people it comes from..
NEVER was...
Taken from the XDA rule book at top of said forum.

From my first post..
1: Investment in Snotes..chances are decision was made on a WON budget.. nothing Racist about that..
let's just giggle and say NZ budget..
2. Engineers - if you think that comment was aimed at any nationality you are sooooo wrong..
as I actually pointed out that if a lower ranking engineer (lowly and or starting out).. was to reverse engineer the Synology apps/desktop note taking program..
and take a peek of the code and compare it to what Samsung has got out there are the moment..
(noting that Synology is a Tiawanese company).. there is a high chance that some good development could come of it..
3. Is it the tail and donkey head comment that has got you guys so uptight..
jezz.. let's say.. the hardware v software teams..lol..
Donkey head being hardware.. tail being software..
No where in those statements am I talking about any Koreans..jezzzzz
Maybe you guys have never truely worked in a multi national environment.. ???
I am not a fan boy of any company and yes, Samsung has screwed it's customers a number of times.. the partnership of Samsung and Google on the original Nexus 10 and the screens turning brown is classic example..(I still have one and while it still boots and runs no one owned up to that production fault..)
The same for batches of S6 screens and I have documented this in other threads..
If I compare those two examples to the HTC EVO which is still being used as a tv remote..hands down the Taiwanese company screen wins for longetivity
So really... The rant is about making something better and who ever makes I don't really care..
There is actually apps available that are cloudbased..
And thanks for your suggestion..I will look to that pdf one you out forward.
So keep the thread on track and put forward better solutions instead of imaginary racial over tones..
Once again.. the note pen works well with in the SNote app.. the ability to export that out as a high resolution copy .. as yet, I have not found a suitable way..
That's not to say that I have not tried...tested and got frustrated with such a simple want...
The *.sdoc format as far as my research has lead me..is a locked down format by Samsung..
If you haven't done your research..Google..
s notes conversion
And have a read..plenty on it out there in WWW land..
Thread closed until any participant can enlighten me on the objective of this thread.
For the record, I don't think the OP was racist in any way. Maybe we need to take a step back and stop assuming any sort of criticism is racism.

Hi there! looking for your feedback!

Hi All!
I'm quite new android games developer. I'm looking for developers community feedback on my first "serious" project.
So, as I'm keen on brain teasers I wanted to create some puzzle game. I've started my research and found out one of old style games called Freeways. So I thoutght that I can improve it from design and car behaviour perspective.
For last couple of weeks I have few thousands of downloads but very few feedback!
And I don't know should I upgrade it further or there is no chance to find my audience....
I've spent like 1 year to make it and absolutly dissapointed that there is now feedback from players. Should I start another project? Another 1 year?
Please advise... Thank you in advance!
Link to my game is here:

WYSIWYG.
Feedback, yes well here you go...
Looks like a data miner to me
No reason to know my precise location or browser history, share with 3rd parties or for me not to have the option to delete collected data.
I wouldn't even install it... based on that alone.
The games I have are all firewall blocked
My favorite apps have zero permissions and never request internet service. They are also some of the best.
Hi Blackhawk! That's a feedback already. This is set up of ads mediation I'm using. Probably it stops other users aswell. Probably I need to find another mediator

I know you want sponsorship and to generate revenue. I can understand that. It's a tough business. Poweramp has a good business model and is one of my few gladly paid for apps. A lot of bang for the buck and nothing comes close to it for a stand alone music player.
Unfortunately from a user prospective that degree of data mining is potentially harmful. Personally I won't tolerate it... no app is worth that. All social media and shopping apps are banned from my devices. Done that for a decade now. One of the first things I targeted when I started using Androids.
