[Q] Copying app's downloaded data to external SD? - LG Thrill 4G

I've just downloaded Sims freeplay, but it downloads 600mb of downloaded data taking up a good portion of my internal SD. The game itself is installed to the external SD, just not the 600mb data.
I'm on my phone now so ive only been able to do about 15 minutes of searching. I've found app2sd, and link2sd, but as far as I know they don't transfer the android/data to the external as?
How can I do this?
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA

Plug into PC and turn on USB mass storage mode then find the folder you are looking for and just drag it from one window to the other

Well I've already tried that. You mean creating "android/data" on my external SD and copying the folder to that directory? When I launch sims it says I need to download the data. I've also tried adding a shortcut with the same name in the internal SD directory just to see if it would go to the external SD, still no.

Some apps need to have data on the internal card for faster recall I believe

bump.
Anything else? I have 1.2GB left on my internal SD, this is enough for the downloaded data of 1 or 2 big games, while my external SD has lots of free memory..

You can't. The only ROM that will allow it is CyanogenMod.
OR until we can do data2sd.

It is possible to do this. Download an app called gl to sd from the market. It works great with transferring gameloft games to external sd. It can work with other games too but i've noticed it's more hit or miss with non gameloft games.

[Q] How get apps to install their sd card data onto the external sd?

I had a whole bunch of questions but I answered a few myself.
One thing I'm still wondering about though is how to get apps/games like Caligo Chaser who download additional content to the /sd folder which is the INTERNAL SD to store that data in /sd/external_sd the EXTERNAL SD.
I wanted to do it by symlinking but then I found out both the internal and the external are fat32 formatted.. so that doesnt work.
I searched google and this forum but I couldnt find any good information on this.
This should affect many apps which download/store stuff on the "SD".
Can you set the "default" data storage directory or something? Or would you have to change the mounts so that the external is /sd and the internal gets a new name?
When I move apps to the SD via application settings they are really put on the external_sd.. so that works.. but why can't the additional (usually bigger too) data be moved to the external too?
Please please this bugs me so hard, someone try to answer this one please.
bump because i changed the whole thing
I believe its a android design. Not everyone has a sd nor should they need to. I guess Google relized that 2gigs is not enough for apps and data so in froyo you can move apps to sd card if it supports it. You can't move data as it could lead to problems when you remove sd card. As far as i know the galaxy s is only phones with more then the stock standard 2gigs of internal ram.

[Q] Moving Apps form Galaxy to internal SD is possible?

Hi I have upgraded my Galaxy S to Froyo with "official" firmware, everything is running ok, I also installed the OneClick LagFix (this change my quadrant from 892 to 1915) but now I only have 400Mb free in the phone memory, I would like to move some apps to the SD but I get the following error "Error moving app. There is not enough memory" (Possible this is not the correct message, i get this message in spanish )
I dont have a external SD, but I have 14Gb free in the internal SD, is not possible move apps to this memory?
Thx in advance
install Froyo, then you can run apps from External SD

yes, but all the apps needs to be re-installed and select External SD during install
or you can force them to External and hope it works with those 3rd party programs that moves apps to External SD
Thx AllGamers, I would like to install in the internal SD partition that have 14Gb free, because I donĀ“t have external SD
Thx in advance
there are tons of 3rd party apps to choose from that helps you manage where you want your apps to go, check these out:

I've a question, is possible to install the apps into the external microSD card?
I know that Froyo permit to do it but only into the internale SD card and i want to use the external one (i've bought a 32Gb for it!!)
Have you any solution?
Thank you!!

I too have a 32Gb card installed.
You can move the apps and there are a number of 3rd party apps that will do this for you quickly or you can do it from settings in managing the applications. I found that this was not the space saving solution that I thought it would be.
It is the data that needs to be moved, e.g., DoggCatcher is my news reader and it had about 3Gb worth of data. Moving the app didn't save any space but using the setting in the program to move the data did the trick. Play around with moving a couple of apps and see what you get and check to see if the app will allow you to move the data to a new location.
Some apps simply stock pile a lot of data. My eBook program, Audible which I can't do without is another one - over 1.5Gb. I'll contact Audible about this one.
some times when you check on sites like AppsBrain
it will tell you if the App is App2SD compatible
meaning it can be isntall to SD also data store on SD
as mpierce said, it's pretty useless to force a program to SD, meanwhile the heavy stuff remains in the phone internals

actually u cannot move ur apps to the internal sd card as internal sd card (16 gb) is only meant for media (videos, songs etc.) and if u want more 16gb for ur apps u will hv to put an external sd card (galaxy s supports 16gb) and ya if u move to sd it will move to external sd card.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. But I don't believe "move to SD" moves anything to the external SD card. The apps move to the internal SD card. Yes unmounting the SD card disables apps, but if you browse through the internal card, you'll still see them sitting there.

sorry for necro'ing but it does indeed move it to the external SD, i've tried moving a couple apps with my Galaxy S to the, as it says, "move to USB memory" but as i check the free memory, it used the external SD memory, not the internal.

low on space notification almost 4GB free still? why

what would cause this odd error when i still have so much free?
found this answer on an other droid forum is it true?
"There is a bug that causes this error, but since 3 big companies are involved, none of them are going to fix it any time soon. Basically, app space is limited to some arbitrary amount and is not equal to the space available on your phone."
I suspect you may be low in system memory. Scroll down to the very bottom of the SD card & phone storage settings. How much available System memory do you have?
system memory is alway around 100Mb even with the space notification.
when I uninstall enough apps it does go away.
stopping open apps or services does not help.
You may want to reset your device. I had a similar problem once with my Atrix. 100mb is a low amount of system memory. I have over 400mb still available on my Thrill.
I have over 650mb left in system memory and its says I have insufficient space whenever I try to download any game around 40mb. I cleared the cache and it worked for one game.

think i got it...
using ES task manager
memory T:442MB A:96MB =ram?
internal storage T:.98GB A:117MB =system nand or partition of internal sd?
sd card T:5.57GB A:3.92GB =internal sd card?
I have a 32GB external sd card.
I thought "system memory" under "SD card & phone storage settings" was RAM
but is seems to be what "ES task manager" reports as "internal storage"
why the hell is the android set up this way?
seems so ass backwards,
/ = system memory (root dir? is this a partition or seperate physical memory from the internal sd)
/sdcard/ = internal sd
/sdcard/_ExternalSD = external sdcard
What is being referred to as internal storage (or system memory) is where the apps are installed by default. You could try moving some apps to SD and it should help. However, I had a problem like this with my Atrix and I never could figure out what was using all the space, so I just did a factory reset. Of course, I used Titanium Backup first.
I've noticed that the thrill thinks the 4gb internal is an SD card and the actual SD card is labeled as "External" when you explore the files. I was thinking of doing a factory reset so I moved all my apps to SD, when I looked in file manager at my SD there was nothing there. I found them all in a folder called "SDCard" on my internal memory. This may have something to do with your issue.

You have 3 types of memory in the phone. There's your external SD (labeled as _External SD), Internal Phone Memory (internal SD), and System Memory (where by default apps are stored). You can move your apps to the internal SD if you desire and that's why it's showing a folder there with the apps in it.

So that it doesn't take up your system memory. If your system memory gets low, it won't let you install additional apps and may also slow down your phone.
Some people are saying that it is reporting wrong? No there actually is an SD card inside the phone and the one outside under the back plate.
To keep things straight:
System= Actual memory on the phone where apps are installed by default, moving to SD and uninstalling apps can create more space.
Internal= SDcard inside the phone where Apps are moved to when choosing move to SD also Alps will store data here and most downloads go here by default
External= The SDcard under backplate which you can access and change. A lot of apps will put backups here and if you choose SD storage in camera where your pics and vids will be. Usually this is set aside for actual personal storage of media and what not.
^ Is there a way to make the external SD card the default data storage? After installing some Gameloft games, my internal storage is already full (5.6 GBs is pathetic LG) but I still still have 2 more games (Dungeon Defenders and Spectral Souls) I want to install which take up about 2GB.

Close. System is where the OS and the system apps, the ones that come preinstalled are stored. The data partition is where market apps are stored. Installing apps from the market has no effect on the system partition. System apps cannot be moved to the sdcard, internal or otherwise. Its the apps on the /data partition that can be moves to the sdcard/internal storage.
Here's the breakdown:
System=619Mb (OS+system apps)
Internal (data)=1Gb (downloaded apps)
Internal SD=6gb (storage,a2sd)
External SD=8Gb (with included card).
LG claims 8gb internal space. All the above adds up to a little over 7.6gb. Leaving 60mb which is most likely the Cache partition.

[Q] phone storage

Hi.
Im running miui rom in my optimus 2x.
I have 3 options to storge.
Phone storage about 1 gb
Sd card storge about 5 gb
And external sd card about 16 gb
The problem is that basically i cant use the external sd card for apps and games,
i try all the move to sd card apps on market and all of tham only move from my phone storage to my sd card, so basically i only have 6gb in my phone.
Is there anyway to move tham to my external??
Tnx.
hmmmmm...
on cm you have an option to do so (settings/cyanogenmod/applications/use external sd for media)
but i don't know if miui has it too. Try looking for something like that
I looked everywhere, there isnt an option like this.
If you don't mind me asking, are you really out of storage to install apps?
Because o2x has an app storage space of 1.5gb excluding the internal 5gb flash memory, and most heavy games will store their game data on the 5gb internal flash mem, and only the basic apk will resides on the app space.
Running out of storage space is really hard achieve since even the heaviest game only consumes like 100mb? Which is mostly stored in the 5gb space. Unless you have hundreds of high end games installed, then you can run out of space .
All the new games need to download between 400-900 mb each, so yeah i runnig out of storge
Alright then, my mistake.
Anyway, I read that to swap sdcard as _externalSD vice versa is via CM7, I am not really sure how because I'm not using it, but I definately read about it before and it is doable. Hopefully someone can help you on the how..
Cheers!
there is a script for miui to swap so your microsd to become /sdcard check the android development

Moving games to external SD - please help :(

Hello,
I tried to use Directory Bind, but when my internal memory was about 9GB free and I had moved about those 9GB to external SD, I cant anything install to internal memory(it is necessary first to move it with directory bind).
So the result was, that all moved games and applications were in internal memory despite the phone shows me 9GB of internal memory.
So, my question and big problem is:
How can I move games and apps to external SD card?
Have you some method, have can I done it?
Would be very grateful.

You can use the app of "GL to SD" found in the market, it can help you to move the game data (not apps) from internal memory to external sd card. The theory of this app is used to simulate the external sd card act as a internal memory card, thus, you need to activate this app before playing the game that you moved. Importantly, a rooted device is required.
the stupidity of LG it not use the external sdcard option that provide by android
event we force it to use that option in console mode using
pm set_install_location
that stupid LG still install the app/game in internal sdcard

The app covers not only gameloft games, but also include of games manufactured by others. In the setup menu, you should tick the boxes of "sdcard/android" and " sdcard/data' under the item of "Add mounted folder". After exit the setup menu, click the " move the data" box and select which game you want to move to sd card. Finally, activate the game.

Could you have possibly missed a step in making DirectoryBind work?
The post above about GL to SD might be the only way then, though it's such a hassle to have to activate it each time you'll run an app with data stored in external SD.
Maybe its possible that I made some step wrong, but everything works fine until the 9GB amount of data moved to external SD card with 9GB free in internal memory.
It looks certainly like a problem with binding from internal memory to external SD card and I must had to do a factory reset.
A friend of mine with Optimus 4X started to use Directory Bind too, but had the same issue as me.
I never gave him a solution to use Directory Bind, so theres probably problem with compatibility...
Of course, I would be very appreciated for help how to use properly Directory Bind on Optimus 4x, because is so simple and comfort...

Activate the GL to SD means that the external sd card is mounted into internal memory card, thus, you just activate a game that you moved before in first time, then the other games are not necessary to activate in next time until if you unmount the external sd card by means of GL to SD.

I can't compare which one is better because I have never used the method of DirectoryBind before. But for me, GL to SD was really useful when I used LG Optimus 2x which had only 5GB internal storage. SD Card can share the heavy load from the internal memory.

I have external SD formatted to FAT32 and GL to SD just now really works for me :good:
Some games you cannot move, but the most of them you can move.
Then you must games starting through the GL to SD app, because they are moved to external SD.
Im taking all back.
This application doesnt work properly on my Optimus 4X.
You can move everything on your external SD card, but it will take up same amount of space in your internal memory as on your external SD card memory.
So, its the same issue as with Directory Bind
Maybe Im doing something wrong? I have all of my external SD card formatted to FAT32.
