[Q] Noob wanting to root - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hiya all, first post
Here's an old one...i want to root my galaxy note ...
My model is gt-n7000 running android 2.3.6
Baseband n7000xxla4
Kernel LA6
Build gingerbread.xxla6
Even though many of you more technically advanced may find it very easy i have trawled the net & YouTube & just do not know what way to safely go about it!
It's so simple to download a set of files & it does look easy to do but there are a few different ways,
Can anyone please help?
Many thanks in advance
....johnno

For firmware KL7 or later you can't root directly. So you need to flash as stock, but pre-rooted ROM using PC Odin for example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352945&referrerid=4386116
After this, flash a Kernel that has CWM 5 and is compatibel to CF Root Kernel (with Mobil ODIN - see market) like this one:

[Q] From rooted speedmod to unrooted no custom kernel gingerbread

From rooted speedmod to unrooted non-custom kernel
Hi I have the international galaxy s.
I9000DTJP3
kernel version: hardcore speedmod k13c 500hz #24
build number: FROYO DTJP5
Firstly, I have rooted using Super One Click
And I changed my kernel after reading instructions from this forum.
I now want to undo what I've done and go back to the original phone
(and later maybe update to gingerbread)
I've spent a lot of time reading through this xda forum and finally I make my own thread and ask directly.. Sorry if this has been asked already but I searched almost everywhere.. Maybe its my lack of professional vocab.
1. I'm guessing to unroot, I just click 'Unroot' on Super One Click but will this affect my speedmod?
2. I have the 3 Button Method installed but I don't know how to safely test if it works. Just do the 3 button combo and if it works, go back by simply taking off the batteries?
3. So if that worked all well.. I would have an unrooted speedmod phone. How do I remove this speedmod? Stock roms? I don't know what they mean.. is it the default firmware? do I have to flash it in? If I install that would that automatically replace my speedmod?
Thank you.. I would really really appreciate your help thank you..
haha! I`ve got similar question,
I`ve root my SGS using the One Click, did the 3 button fix, and to my surprise manage to flash the speedmod k13e 500.. currently this is my build *#1234#
I9000DXJPE
I9000DXJPB
I9000OLBJPA
a few days ago, i read doc`s kitchen rom and download the cooked rom with this configuration
*NEW* ZSJPK v11.1 WIPE
CSC : XME
Speed mode kernel
DXJPB Modem
2.2.1 jpj browser etc with tweaks, custom bootanimation and mod sound
so my question can I just use the recovery update.zip to install the rom?
p/s I`ve no idea what I`m doing but it look fun to mess around the phone so I`m a beginner that knows nothing but I could read if that matters
I dont know if it will effect the speedmod but if you just flash the stock rom I think it will replace it.. just imagine if you are going to change from one kernel to another or update to a newer version what will you do? just flash it and badaboom the new one will replace the old one.. so it is a similar process..
Just one question.. if you have the EXT4 lagfix you have to undo/disable that first am I right?
To get back to original ROM, get your version from http://samfirmware.com.
If you used any lagfixes disable them before flashing (because the stock-kernel does not support ext4-partitions).
Flash the firmware (PDA, MODEM, CSC) with odin (repartition not ticked).
To verify the 3-button-combo works just power of your phone and then press "Home+Volume-down+Power", then it should enter download mode.

[Q] Questions about rooting and modding

Hi,
I have recently updated my galaxy s to Gingerbread (PDA: i9000DDJV6 / Phone: DDJV4 / CSC: DDJV6). It has 3e recovery
I want to root my phone now to carry out some customizations, install 2e recovery and maybe install a custom firmware later.
I have been going through the forums but I have a some queries which I couldn't find the answers to.
1. If I install a rooted kernel /firmware and something goes wrong, will installing the DDJV6 ROM from Samfirmware bring it back to the stock factory default config exactly as from Samsung ?
2. Does superoneclick root by changing some settings in the stock kernel or does it just automate installation of a rooted kernel ?
3. Is it okay to install fw versions of other countries if I don't find a DDJV6 (Indian) firmware ? Will it mess up the country specific settings ?
Thanks a lot for your answers
No answers? strange!!

What's the best way to root stock galaxy s with 2.3.4?
First of all you have to download a 2.3.4-firmware (I'd suggest JVS, it's 2.3.5) and then flash it with Odin (you know how? If no, just let me know and I'll explain it ).
After that just look for a kernel that fits your firmware and also flash it with Odin (PDA-filed) and you're done.

Should be fine with it, can you direct me to the Odin rom in question please? I take it that its pre-rooted with clockwork recovery?
You could post the steps as it's for a friend and I can direct your post to him.
Hey guys I have a related question regarding kernels, posting here to save creating more threads.
I've come from Froyo 2.1.1 with Voodoo Kernel. Only reason I've updated to JVR 2.3.4 is because I've read this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225879 and realised I can have glorious Voodoo sound again on newer firmware.
So I've gone ahead and followed this guide to update firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139050
However I was unsuccesfuly in installing madrooster's kernel, through Odin I semi bricked and through CWM it gave an error. Perhaps because I am not rooted? However I was successful in installing Dark Core 2.6, I read that this had Voodoo sound but upon installing the Voodoo control plus and running it, no controls were available. It said phone needed to be rooted to load the driver....I'm really lost, I need help
Tried to flash kernel - Think I bricked phone
I tried to flash a dark core kernel using SGS kernel app. Phone rebooted and showed funny colours on the screen with a robotic voice giving commentary every now and again. Now just keeps rebooting and showing random colours on the screen. I have not backed up the phone, but contacts etc are on google. Can anyone help?

As I read in this post, you have to flash an older stock rom, root it, then flash the new stock rom using mobile-odin with keep root option on.
Text from the post:
"As New ROMs are not direct rootable, you cant root it direct method like Zergrush exploit or CF-Root, If you want such new ROMs Rooted, You shud have currant Older ROM installed, If you are not rooted and flashed Newer ROM, first downgrade to older ROM as above said.then you may update n Root it with one of following two methods."
XXLA6
i want also root my note
Baseband Version : N7000XXLA4
Buildnumber: GINGERBREAD.XXLA6
KERNEL: 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341 [email protected]#2
anyone how and what to use
As jellevanb wisely stated... This thread holds the answers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
I was on La6, flashed KKA with PC Odin, then used CF-Root for KKA (props to Chainfire for his amazing work) then flashed LA6 on-device using CWM Manager that was installed with CF-Root. Now I have La6 with root
I also was on LA6, flashed AbyssNotekernel42CWTouchOriginalLogo.tar with PC Odin then used CF-Root-SGN_XX_SER_LA6-v5.0-CWM5. It worked for me.
The easiest way to gain root would be this:

[Q] Rooting 2.3.3 JVK

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to root an i9000 2.3.3 XXJVK However Im struggling to find a guide with working download/links
info:
Model - GT-I9000
Firmware - 2.3.3
Baseband: I9000XXJVK
Kernal 2.6.35.7-I9000XXJVKCL75655 [email protected] #2
Build: GINGERBREAD.XXJVK
it was recently restored, I'm pretty sure it was 2.3.6 before however it is refusing to update now.
Anyone got a working guide / download links?
I have also seen a few people with IMEI issues should I be backing up the IMEI before somehow?
The aim is to get to 4.X as 2.3 is to laggy and eats battery.
Thanks!!
The best thing to do is to upgrade to either XXJW4 or XXJVU just to be on the safe side using Odin.
In the development section there is a thread to do with CF-Root. These are specific to the firmware you are running on, eg. CF-Root made for XXJW4 can only be flashed on XXJW4.
These come with a custom recovery as well so once you've flashed Cf-Root you can just flash whatever rom you want through recovery.
I'm sorry I can't post links to any of these as it's hard to multitask on an old tablet - searching through the I9000 forums will get you to CF-Root and stuff quickly
IMEI issues only occur because people jump from 2.3.x -> 4.1 and above. To prevent that you have to go from 2.3.x - > 4.0.4 -> whatever rom you want. Tedious, I know, but it prevents IMEI from being lost. If you check your internal storage under a foler called /backup you might find backups of your IMEI as well.
You should just always backup your IMEI before modifying any system component. As soon as you get root access you can do it with terminal command.
