I have the AT&T Galaxy Tab SGH-I987 rooted but I still can't figure out how to install non market apps. I've looked all over youtube, google and even here. Can anyone help me? I know it's more simple than what I'm making it out to be...
just download the apk (or download from PC and put in the sdcard).
Then use a file explorer like root explorer or ES File Explorer and click on it.
Also remember to check Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources. You probably did, but no harm in making sure.

The AT&T version does not have this setting... Apparently they blocked it. When I try to install from SD card it will not allow... Is there anyway around this without rooting?
Use installer apps like File browsers, Back up and restore apps etc..

Use a file manager like Root explorer. It is a paid app but really great. There are some free ones as well like Astro but I personally don't like how the UI looks.
You can download them to your SD card and install with Astro (free). Browse your SD card with Astro, click on the file and it asks you to either browse or install.
Thanks I meant if you can download the file not install them. I assume that its just not possible and you have to use your computer then.

Does anyone have any input on this? When I browse the forums on my phone and click on an apk, I get an "Unknown - Cannot download. The content is not supported on the phone" message.
Are there any possibilities installing an apk using only the phone?

Download Astro File Manager. Open it up and then use the menu button and go to Preferences. At the bottom of the list you'll see "Enable Browser Downloads". Tick that box and now you can download files in your phone's browser.
Don't uninstall astro, or you won't be able to dl anymore.
I just used Dropbox. Files go in on my PC, and are available on my phone with the Dropbox app.
DB offers 2GB storage for free and, so far, it's worked from all my PC's and works well with my phone. I just open the .apk and install.
umm... same way you download on a computer...

Thanks. I had tried with explorer, which is the free version of root explorer, but it didn't work. I'll try astro.

There's an app on the market called "Download All Files ". It has allowed me to download several different files that I was not able to before. Downloaded files get put into a folder called "download" on the sd card. Use your file explorer, you can install .apks from there.
It seems that since updating to the AT&T 2.2 Froyo update and rooting the market will not recognize any side loaded apps that have been added to the phone since upgrading to 2.2. All apps that I side loaded on 2.1 are recognized and can be updated but nothing on 2.2. Anyone else have this problem and if so have you been able to fix this issue?
I used SuperOneClick to root the phone and did a reboot the phone afterward to allow side loading of apps and it is working. I am still using the adb install command to side load all my apps, is this wrong?
If this is something that is not to be discussed I apologize now.
Well I don't have a direct answer to your question but since you are rooted I highly suggest you go and get Titanium Backup along with atrackdog.
The former application will alloa you to backup any applications you want (or aall of them) and then save them to your computer. you can then move the folder to any phone and use Titanium to reinstall the applications exactly where you left off. That means launchers will have the same layouts and games will still have their save states.
The latter will allow you to check the update status of those applications since they won't show up as downloaded applications from the market.

side loaded paid apps will NEVER show in market.
free ones can be restored...
tibu has never been able to restore market links for me either.
there used to be a program MCleaner but it got taken off the market..
but all it did was this (do it yourself)
Menu button > Settings > Applications > Manage Apps > All > Market
- force stop
- clear data
- clear cache (if availavle)
restart market > my apps

Actually, it does. Market only keeps track of the apps you buy/download through it. What you're asking is like expecting Wal-Mart to know what you bought from Target.
Hey guys I just had a question while reading through the replies.
I downloaded atrakdog and got a list of all the apps needed to be updated.
One of the apps was the market..
Mine is version 2.3.4
I need to update to 5.0.12
How do you update market? Btw I'm running cm7 does this effect it?
Sent from my phone
Market should update automatically. As far as the sideload apps you can. Also get root explorer and copy paste them to system/app then reboot and they'll all be there.

So your are saying instead of using adb installer just do a drop and drag to the system/app folder and install them that way? Now will that put them in the market place? I don't quite understand what you are really saying here. Excuse my ignorance.

That's exactly what I was thinking was moving the file to the system/app file then reinstalling the .apk first then doing the 3 button reboot to see if it would recognize the app on the market. I did try just a 3 button reboot after side loading a few apps using ADB Installer and just doing the normal drop and drag to the sim card and I know that doesn't recognize them. I am going to try and reinstall one of my apps that way and I will let you know if it shows up or not.
When trying to move a new .apk file to the system/app file it says "You cannot paste here because the file system is a read-only."

You have to click the small window at the top of the screen in root explorer that changes r/o to r/w. You have to do that in each directory you want to edit.

Did you try a non market app Install to make sure it wasn't working?

Bro...same thing here. What I did was flash to just about any rom and the rom will allow to install non market apps. Also, on the market there is an app that allows you to install apps from the SD card. So you could go to getandroidstuff.com and download the .apk, put on your cappy, and use the app to install. But personally I like the ROM! Yee

Sorry, I never got an e-mail that I got a reply.
Yes, I've tried to download the new Amazon market but get an error message that I can't install non-market aps.
There is a second way. It involves tibu and a brain.
1. Find settings storage in an Sqlite editor, I use sqlite from the market, it costs money but it is worth it.
2. Find the database in settings storage and open it
3. Click on secure
4.look at the first column, find allow non market apps.
Change the value for the non market apps from 0 to 1
5. Save the database.
You may need to reboot but that shouldn't be necessary
If it is already a 1 then change it to a zero and save then do it again.
Also before you do this download the super one click again and try it with the newly downloaded one click.

Did you root using one click, then try that( i reccomend rageagainstthecage method)(on the right upper corner of program)

On the stock AT&T firmware for the AHD (4.1), you only need to root the phone and remove the vendor apps and the AT&T Addressbook and Yellow Pages apks from the phone and Contacts will load up without any carrier reference. It's actually pretty cool to see how easy it is to remove carrier customizations from this build and look somewhat vanilla.
It should work...make sure you clear cache before you install. And you cant just install it, you have to copy with a root explorer and set permissions correct...

I try with root browser but appears uninstall unsuccessful. What I did wrong?
Need change permissions?
Need another program?
I don't find vendor apps.
My phone is only root.
If you are running the stock ROM with root access, you need to download and install Root Explorer. It isn't a free app but I'm all for supporting development. (Note: I am in no way affiliated with any paid apps on the Play Store)
Open Root Explorer and navigate to System\Vendor. There is a directory \apps that you can just delete, which will elminate most of the pre-installed applications. Root Explorer will ask for root permission, which will open up your SU app. Grant permissions, then Root Explorer will warn you that you are still in R/O mode and confirm that you want R/W access to delete or move the files. Grant access again and the operation will be complete. You aren't done though, as the rest of the apps are loaded in System\apps, so go up a folder back to \System then open up \apps. You want the AT&T phonebook sync, Ready2Go and Yellow Page apps for starters to be deleted. Caution, you will see a lot of force closures but this is to be expected. You'll have leftover entries listed on downloads in App Manager, which you can delete manually one at a time.
If you don't want QuickOffice, you can remove the apk for it and any other preinstalled application that came with the phone. Keep in mind that you will need to be conservative in what you remove because one wrong move/delete could cause you to lose functionality. You should notice a much cleaner app drawer for starters, plus the Contacts app looks like Jelly Bean / ICS without the Yellow Pages icon.
At this point you should have a fairly clean 4.1.1 stock install on the Atrix. What I would like to do at some point is make a 4.1.1 based ROM using the AT&T update, just removing Blur and making everything vanilla. After that make a vanilla 4.0 ROM that is compatible with the Lapdock. I may have moved onto the Nexus 4 but something has to be said for this phone's build quality.
Thank You.:good:
Okay this feels really dumb, but I'm trying to install an .apk
Easy enough, right? I find the apk via a file explorer and click to install. Android prompts me to allow apks to be installed, I allow them. Then the installation starts. Its going well, but suddenly the Note 3 restarts and the apk isn't installed.
I've factory reset it a few times and tried multiple times. I'm running stock. build number JSS15J.N900AUCUBMJ5 and the apk I'm trying to install is from the humble bundle. (particularly Ravensword 2, Star command, but even trying to install other apps via apks cause my note 3 to reboot)

Make sure that allow mock locations in checked in developer options and unkown sources is checked in security settings. If those are both checked and it still doesn't work you can push the app into the system manually, I use ES file explorer. Retrieve your apk from downloads, long press and copy it, go into device/system/app and paste, change apps permission to rw-r-r. To change the permissions long press the app, then click more on the bottom right then properties/change the permission to rw-r-r. you must be rooted to do it the manual way.
